RMRG Embarks On 3-Game PNW Tour

This weekend, Rocky Mountain (#3 W WFTDA, #5 DNN) hits the Pacific Northwest to take on three top-ten teams in a series that has the potential to solidify or seriously shake up the WFTDA Western Region rankings. Friday night sees Rocky take on Portland's Rose City (#4 W WFTDA, #6 DNN), Saturday features a clash with 2009 champs Oly (#1 WFTDA, #2 DNN), and Sunday finishes the tour with a matchup against Rat City (#5 W WFTDA, #7 DNN).

DNN's coverage of the Rocky Mountain tour begins on Friday, May 21 at 8pm Pacific (11pm Eastern) as Rocky Mountain takes on Rose City. Live video coverage is kindly provided courtesy of the Rose City Rollers and Blaze Streaming Media.

With the impressive concentration of top-flight derby in the Pacific Northwest region, weekend trips to play two or three of the major teams in the area have been increasingly popular. In March, #11 Madison rolled in to play Rat City and Oly, and in April #10 Charm City came through to play Rose City, Oly and Rat City. The visitors lost all five of those bouts, but given Rocky Mountain's very impressive performance in the past few months, they have a good chance to come out of their three-game swing with a winning record -- and possibly even an undefeated one.

The biggest feather in Rocky's cap came just two weeks ago when they swamped a historically very dangerous Texas team by the biggest margin in Texas' 6-year interleague history, 163-64, with Texas ranked #1 in their South Central region and #3 in the nation at the time. They've also smashed two other top-25 leagues (Duke City (215-47) and Bay Area (195-17)) thus far this year, and have gone 5-0 since their loss to crosstown rivals Denver in the 3rd place bout of 2009's WFTDA Nationals.

Rocky Mountain's placement in 2009 Nationals was of course made possible by a big upset of Rose City in the 2009 Western Regionals, where Rocky was the 8th seed of 10 and Rose was the 3 seed; Rocky went on to lose to Oly in the championship bout of the Westerns, 119-64, and is likely out for revenge. For Oly, there's something else on the line -- the 2009 champs are currently sitting on a 16-0 record in WFTDA-sanctioned bouts that dates back to January 2009. If they can defeat Rocky Mountain this weekend and Texas on June 5, they'll tie Gotham's record for the longest WFTDA winning streak ever -- and with a closed but sanctioned bout against lowly-ranked Tucson on June 27, they'd have a golden opportunity to break it.

Rose City and Rat City played a game just last weekend that reflected their back-to-back ranking in both the WFTDA and DNN systems, with Rose leading all the way but only escaping with a 19-point win, 124-105. That result moved both teams to 4-1 on the 2010 campaign, with Rose City's only loss coming by 8 points to champs Oly. Although both Rat City and Rocky Mountain are very experienced teams who were part of the original 30 teams of WFTDA, they have never faced one other in sanctioned action before.

As a total nerd,

I would also like everyone to notice that Rocky does not play with a full 14. Not because someone's missing, or can't make it, they just don't. Amazing! I can't WAIT for these games!

Quad Almighty says that the right number of players for a line-up sheet is 12. It just works better than 14. I don't disagree.

12 is the right number of

12 is the right number of songs for a power pop album, but 14 works best for a punk album, so i guess this theory all depends on how much you like skinny ties.

12 vs. 14

Whether you ran a 12 person line or a 14, why would you not want the extra people incase of injury?

I am excited to watch all

I am excited to watch all those three games, all for different reasons.

Schedule?

When are the Oly and Rat games? Just wondering if I'll be able to catch them between our home season game tomorrow night and Sunday at Brewhaha.

xo,
Loco

Oly & Rat

Looks like the Oly bout starts 6:30 PST, but I'm guessing the RMRG bout is 2nd that evening.

The Rat bout starts at 7 PST on Sunday! =)

Rocky + Oly & Rat

Still haven't pinned down coverage for the Rocky/Oly bout. If it is possible, it will happen.

Rocky/Rat will be live on DNN. Should start right about the time things are wrapping up at the Brewhaha, so we'll try to make some kind of viewing-party arrangement.

Rocky + Oly & Rat?

Oh my!

Hi Loco,

Rat vs. RMRG game will start at 6:30pm Sunday. Video should be up and running. Thanks!

Oly

Video...Don't need it. I WILL BE THERE!!! How awesome it will be too. Plus I don't think that roster is right for Oly.

Rosters

There's the roster information we get, and then there's the roster that skates. Rarely, very rarely, do the two resemble each other in any great detail.

Rosters

The rosters match for the Rose City bout. I was tracking line-ups for RM. BATass and Roboflow were never in. Ecko played maybe 2 jams. So really only ten skated. Rose City was up 60-53 at half but Rocky Mountain basically dominated the second half to win 127-96. Took the lead on the first jam of the 2nd and never looked back. They are quite a formidable team.

my prediction

is that rocky upsets oly + takes the rat game as well. they've just been getting better + better since nationals. i wouldn't be surprised if they didn't take it all this year.

...not that any of the top 10 is handing it away without a fight. =)

That wouldn't surprise me,

That wouldn't surprise me, nor would the opposite! The top level of WFTDA teams is truly at its most even competitively that it ever has been, IMHO. I think any of the current top 8-10 teams really can beat any of the other on any given day. I'd love to be able to see multi-game series between these teams over the course of a few days- maybe someday?!?!

Agree with caveats

Rocky can upset Oly provided they get stepped up production from the jammers other than Deranged and not go strictly uptempo: Oly has other home run producers on the jammer line other than Atomatrix. Not only can Atomatrix produce the big point jams (to match Deranged), but you've got Tanny, Heffer, and Femme Fatale so the secondary jammers of RMRG must be able to beat them for lead jammer status--either even up or better. Also RMRG probably should not go strictly up tempo for this bout--It plays to Oly's strength and I believe they have more girls who can play it that way and succeed. RMRG's got to create some sludge and containment in their pack play--win the trenches-which plays into my point on what else may help them get the lead jammer advantages.

Rocky's chances

Rocky doesn't have to change their game plan, they just have to execute it. This will be a game about who's game plan gets executed. Can Oly over-power Rocky or can Rocky out play Oly? As always, penalties and injuries will be decisive. Athletically, this will be the game of the year.

UGGGGHHHH

I'm bummed there won't be video of Oly/RMRG on DNN...I kinda feel like I'm missing the superbowl...I will however be glued to the textcast (that's happening, right?).

Rocky at Oly textcast = YES

It ain't at all like being there!™ but it sure beats the hell out of nothing!

Big thanks to Josh Carroll at New Wire Communications for hooking up the internet to allow even a reliable textcast at this challenging location! Let's give 'em some sponsor love: they're your Northwest source for Wild Blue and other satellite services, with internet options available everywhere. Give them a call at 360 903-8203.

Thanks Josh!

Missing out

Wow I really want to see this one!

thx

Oly 17-0

Oly once again adapted and successfully won another bout. The amazing ability of a great championship team. Who's house?......

Oly #1

(everywhere else but DNN and the all-dumb derbytron) ;) ......don't take it serious ok, its all in fun.

Come on G

All Oly did was come back from a 30 point deficit and hold RMRG scoreless for 13 minutes while Oly racked 46 points. And what about that lazy Tannibal Lector? She sat out 2 or 3 jams after taking a hit to the head so hard that her jaw was dislocated. Sure, she came back and blocked and jammed the rest of the night, but still, what a slacker!

The only logical thing to do is drop Oly to #3 and put someone more deserving in #2. I would suggest Windy City, since they are the only team in the top 11 that Oly has never ben able to beat (of course, Oly has never played them, but this is a minor technicality).

Oh those penalties

Rocky had it rolling real good for about 3/4's of the 1st half---fine blocking, particularly some walls that came to a screeching halt on Oly jammers and aggressive jammer skating before the penalty parade. Hard to generate offense when you've got 2 skaters in the box for many jams and the Rocky jammer is too busy playing defense on the Oly jammer to seriously go for scoring points. Oly looked like their skating got much more faster and aggressive in the 2nd half. I'm wondering if Oly pushing the pace as frenetically as they did for that bout eventually forced the penalty problems for Rocky.

A lot a fine skating in that bout overall, a pleasure to watch.

Penalties

It was penalty trouble for Oly, ironically enough, that allowed the Denver Roller Dolls to nearly overtake and beat them last year, in the closest game they had all season. In my opinion, the biggest thing that elevated them from a Very Good team to a WFTDA Champion team was getting their gameplay cleaned up and reducing the amount of time spent in the penalty box.

...

@Aitchbee OMG Tannah landed right in front of me. She went horizontal about 4ft off the ground and then came down on her face and shoulder. That woman is unbelievable. And Sassy was as always amazing.

@Brad. That was like so 13 months ago. They lost 6 months ago by 87. Rose has played them twice in the past and only lost by a total of 14 pts (flattrackstats.com)

OLY #1

WOW!

That was some bout last night, unbelievable! The pack play was like nothing I've seen. RMRG came out strong, but OLY took control at about 22-25 minutes in. Oly is crazy good. Amazing bout! Really Really good. But the final score makes it look closer than it was. (much like against Charm) Hope Oly doesn't drop another spot in the "Power Rankings". (kidding!)

Wow. I hope they have video. I want to see it again-
