Preview: #3 Texas @ #4 Denver

BROOMFIELD, CO --  In this historic double-header, new defensive strategy will meet the old school of hard knocks as Denver meets the founders of modern flat track derby, Texas, for the first time. Texas finished second in the 2009 WFTDA Nationals with a championship-bout loss to Oly, while Denver took third place in the tournament by knocking off cross-town rivals Rocky Mountain; currently, DNN's unofficial Power Rankings have Texas at #3 in the nation and Denver at #4. The second bout will feature the undefeated Bruising Altitude (the Denver Roller Dolls JV team) against the O-Town Derby Dames (Ogden, Utah).

DNN's live video coverage of this bout is sponsored by Sin City Skates. Join Hurt Reynolds and Jim "Koolaid" Jones for the live call starting at 7pm Mountain time (9pm Eastern, 8 pm Central, 6pm Pacific) on Saturday, May 8th.

Denver won a bid to the WFTDA (Women's Flat Track Derby Association) national championship for the first time in 2009. Texas were the first WFTDA champions in 2006 and have not missed a bid to the national championship tournament in the last four years. Texas has experience but they're facing some notable roster changes which leave them without standout blocker/jammer Rice Rocket, fearsome blocker Bullet Tooth Tracy, former captain Desi Cration and veteran jammer Morphine.

There is still ample talent on their roster which includes sisters Crackerjack and Lucille Brawl and seasoned jammers Bloody Mary and Olivia Shootin' John, the Texas 2009 “Rookie of the Year” The Angie-Christ. They also sport a new transfer from Tuscon Roller Derby, Luce Bandit -- the first graduate of a junior derby league to join all-star play. Coming off of their two-loss 2009 season (only losing to current WFTDA champions Oly and the 2008 WFTDA champions Gotham) and two easy wins in 2010 over the Dallas Derby Devils and Assassination City Roller Derby, they appear to be ready for derby with altitude.

Denver grabbed international attention with their controversial and effective strategic play. Described by the Derby News Network as having “tremendously demoralizing defense, spectacular pack awareness, and a killer jammer attack,” Denver has made very minor changes to their roster since the 2009 season. Quick and agile jammers Julie Adams and Heather Juska return with a defensive pack that demonstrates almost telepathic cohesion and strong control. The slow pack play technique that Denver has developed and perfected can utilize power jam situations for big jam margins. In the 2009 season, Denver were defeated only three times despite a challenging Western Regional tournament. Two of those losses were at the hands of the WFTDA 2009 champions, the Oly Rollers. The first bout against the Oly Rollers was a heartbreaking 2-point loss in Olympia.

Despite the fact that Denver and Texas are in different regions, this bout could still impact regional rankings later for the tournament portion of the season. Regional rankings will be calculated at the end of June. One criterion for regional rankings in WFTDA is that a charter team must play two WFTDA-sanctioned bouts against teams within their own region. Texas will provide a rematch opportunity for the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls (whom they defeated at the 2009 National tournament) the next day in a closed sanctioned bout. They also have a chance to improve or maintain their ranking with a bout against the Charm City Roller Girls (Baltimore, MD) in June.

Denver will have opportunities to move ahead if they defeat Western Region rivals Duke City (Albuquerque, NM) next weekend in an away bout and the Rat City Rollergirls (Seattle, WA) at the 1STBANK Center on June 12th.

minor correction

The Kung Fu Donnas was the name of FoCo's all-star travel team, not local team. They have since changed their name to the Microbruisers.

Yes indeed it is (was?).

Yeah, that's what Derbymatic says (as far as KFDs having been their travel team).

Thanks for pointing out their name change, I don't believe they ever let us know about it. We track upwards of 400 leagues worldwide, it's kind of tricky making regular web site checks of all of them to look for things like that.

On the upside, they haven't moved their travel team name to or from another team in the league. When that happens it confuses the hell out of everybody. Us, their opponents, their fans, etc.

texas texas kill kill kill!!!

derby names derby names kill kill kill!

Jerry Seltzer will be there

Yup

I've already been in touch. We're going to see if we can chat with him a bit during the video coverage, if his prior obligations will allow it.

?!?!

In the East and out of touch...what's up with the Texas roster changes? Fingers crossed for lack of vacation days, needing to take a weekend off, and daughter's recital that she just can't miss...

TXRG roster changes...

Note that there are 14 names on this list and not 20. Which means it's the roster for this particular bout/trip, and not their chartered roster. However...

There were a number of retirements announced at the close of last year's home season. Their retirements included a number of travel team skaters. Per their website's team listings, retirees include Rice Rocket, Vicious Van Gogo, Cat Tastrophe, and some others. Still on their travel team (per their web site) but not on this particular bout's roster are Acute Angel, Dilla, Morphine, The Killa' Sal Monella, and Shortcut. Web site only shows 18 skaters on their travel team, no idea what their chartered roster presently looks like.

Not Rice Rocket!

NOOOOOOOOO!!!

NOOOOO!!!!!

!!!!!!!!

Vicious Van Gogo

Vicious van Gogo hasn't technically retired, though. She's now in Madison playing for the Dairyland Dolls. I like to pretend it's part of a trade deal for Crackerjack.

banished!

Did you seriously just write off the retirement of Bullet Tooth Tracy and Desi Cration as "some others"?!?
Sir, I disavow you.

Texas Rollergirls Rollercenter Texas V Denver and Rocky Episode

Here is the latest Rollercenter episode in which Chip Queso and Jim " Kool Aid" Jones break down one of the most important aspects of this weekends games.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJTlpgK2rJY

Calling out PR Phil & KoolAid Jones.

Just in case you're busy or don't want your boss seeing you surfing at work, that "more important" aspect the dudes cover is afterparty prospects - not about the actual matchups this weekend.

I WISH it was about the skaters taking to the track and two knowledgeable insiders take on some of the less marquee names replacing retired skaters. Texecutioners are one of the few (only?) teams from the first Dust Devil to maintain their top-5 status for the life of their team's career to date, while so many other formerly top teams succumbed to splits, retirements, pregnancies, injuries, politics and other difficult-to-avoid ranking slides. So its super interesting that they're taking on such closely ranked teams with so many of their former starters off the roster. DNN touched on it, but would love to hear more, and not just about Texas. Especially given the amount of typing Denver Roller Dolls speed-control has inspired, and Rocky's underdog-no-more recent climb to the tip-top. Wasn't it a Rocky (or was it PP) vs Texas that spawned that "punch heard round the world" clip, even?

Tell us something interesting to get us psyched for the bouts, dudes. We have our own afterparties to regret Monday morning.

Love,
Ivanna

rocky vs texas

that was the rocky vs texas game at nationals

Western inside joke

You missed the western inside joke, Holly.

WHO DO YOU SKATE FOR!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!?????

TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TEXAS IS THE REASON!!!!!! TEXAS TEXAS KILL KILL KILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
from txrollergirls.org:

We Skate For Texas!

An open letter to Texas Rollergirls:

"This afternoon the Texies take off for our first real showcase of the year against #3 ranked Denver Roller Dolls and #4 ranked Rocky Mountain Roller Girls. Up and comers may they think we're dated or declining or vulnerable. As always, we will remind them that Texas is an institution, and it doesn't matter what 20 skaters we send or what new strategy is formed. They're not gonna get us.

We're so proud to represent you, Texas Rollergirls family. The Texecutioners are just the visible part of the iceberg-- under the waterline there is an invisible and gigantic mass of shipwrecking destruction, and that's all of you. You created the institution of dominance, you sustain it, and you make us strong. Thank you for all the sacrifices you've made and all the support you give us. We understand what we need to do to make you proud.

For every time you just wanted to smack Belle on the butt because you couldn't get past her....

For every time you cheered at some crazy juke by Sal....

For every minute of practice and every bit of ego you sacrificed....

For the involuntary way you choke up a bit when you hear "Creator"....

... We will kill for you.

Texas Texas Kill Kill Kill!

We'll see y'all on DNN. We love you, Texas."

- Your Texecutioners

**stay tuned for details on a local live stream of the game**

The Texecutioners dedicate Saturday's game to Texana "Texie" Fisher. Texie, the 24-year old cousin of Rec-n-Rollerderby skater Spice A. Roni, passed away in her sleep two weeks ago. The Texecutioners will play to win in honor of Texie Fisher and the entire Spice A. Roni family
