Sage advice.
ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA -- The first major modern roller derby event in the southern hemisphere is shaping up to be the biggest anywhere, displacing the annual East Coast Derby Extravaganza from its traditional role as the derby calendar's monster.
Taking place on five separate tracks over two full days, June 12-13 at the Adelaide Showground, The Great Southern Slam features two categories of play. 15 teams will compete in five mini-pools for seeding into an 8 team single elimination tournament, while individual skaters from throughout Australia and New Zealand compete in theme-based challenge bouts throughout the weekend.
DNN is going down under! Dumptruck and Hurt Reynolds, along with a rotating company of local volunteers, will provide live coverage from The Great Southern Slam. DNN coverage of this event is presented by Riedell Skates and Fast Girl Skates, and also made possible by direct contributions from DNN viewers like you.

No kidding.
Maybe it should have just been called The Big Derby Tournament? Something very Australian about that.

the trophy should be a skate
the trophy should be a skate welded to the top of a tucker box.

Southern Hemisphere
Do they go clockwise in the southern hemisphere? You know, like toilets?
We make that joke in our league...
...or at least we did the first year that L'exi-Cuter was skating with us after she moved up from New Zealand. Coriolis effect FTW!
I am happy that roller derby
I am happy that roller derby is going international... I see how hard that the European girls are working.
I hope this is not taking the usual ECE coverage away?
no fear
ECE coverage will be wall to wall... as will Battle on the Bank coverage, which takes place the same weekend. God help us. And contributors. God and contributors help us.
Good on you, mates.
When I was there it was a couple of years before the flat track derby revolution, but here are some things you need to do in between bouts:
- Flush the toilets to investigate the coriolis effect first-hand.
- Eat a slice of pizza with capsicum.
- Eat a pie floater.
- Eat kangaroo.
- Buy a kangaroo scrotum to hold your dollar and two dollar coins.
Also, "Foster's" is Australian for "tourist." Don't get suckered in by that one.
Also, sing this line really
Also, sing this line really loud in a public place -- "AM I EVVVVER GONNNNA SEE YOUR FAAAACE AGAIN?" -- and see what response you receive. Angels FTW!
re: God & Contributors ALSO need help
Or at least the contributors, maybe. Guess who figured out a way to get to Australia!!? But, well, that's really ALL I figured out. I'll be there to help with tourney coverage, but if anyone has a couch they need me to sleep on in Adelaide during the tourney, or in Queensland the week after, please let me know and I'll get right on it! ha ivanna@derbyisland.org
