Weekly Rollup & Open Thread, 4/23/2010
Stop the presses: instead of jumping to conclusions from a first viewing, a sports journalist (Matt Goisman of the Sports of Boston blog) goes back to check out the Boston Derby Dames from a sporting perspective and finds out stuff we already know. Always good to see another traditional-sports fan get it.
Jet City's Indy Pendant is skating with multiple sclerosis. Kind of puts your hematoma into perspective.
Following on recent similar events in Austin, Olympia and Baltimore, the city of Chicago officially recognizes the Windy City Rollers.
Way back in the DNN 2.0 days, we mentioned a call for submissions to an upcoming derby comic book called Jam: Tales from the World of Roller Derby. Looks like it's on the verge of release, and you can see a 17-page preview here.
Finally ... once again, the Los Angeles Derby Dolls production crew totally kills it. Here's the video introduction for last weekend's bout between the Varsity Brawlers and Tough Cookies.
Got a funny, interesting, intriguing or just weird link for next Friday's Open Thread? Let us know.

All I could think was...
pewpewpewpew!
And hey, how about those Derby Skins in Wausau? http://www.antifascistencyclopedia.com/allposts/wausau-wis-roller-derby-...
That's sad :(
I feel sorry for those girls.
The Marriage Ref does derby
NBC had a derby-related segment on last night's ep of The Marriage Ref. I didn't watch the show, nor have I taken the time (yet) to watch the clip of the segment to which I am linking -- so viewer beware.

Why did I bother!
That is just wrong......where is this non derby played anyways?????
Not like I'm a fan...

Not like I'm a fan of Old School derby, but really, comments like this don't help with the tensions between Old School and DIY derby. Things are calmer now than they've been in years past, but that doesn't mean we should start anything up just for giggles.
Viva la difference!
Tara Armov
LA Derby Dolls
kind of disappointing.
although i do confess to being extremely curious about the identity of the league or institution shown in this clip, and why exactly they practice for five hours at a time, three days a week. maybe aiming for tables is very difficult?
American Roller Skating Derby league?
So I didn't know about this old 'professional' league ARSD, but it seems like this is the league in the clip above, based on this Ultimate Cake Off Roller Derby clip http://tlc.discovery.com/videos/ultimate-cake-off-roller-derby-full-epis... (LA Firebirds http://www.firebirds-rollerderby.com/ - game comment: http://www.goldstar.com/events/pomona-ca/american-roller-skating-derby-l...). I was expecting to see a WFTDA league...
This seems to be the old school WWE derby, not OSDA, obviously not WFTDA, it's interesting how the marriage ref girl got her facts mixed up ("You bet it's real") and even one of the cake makers can't tell the difference between flat track and old banked track derby. She has a typical FT looking derby girl on one of the cakes, when this league obviously uses the standardized old style uniform.
Too many versions of roller derby going around confusing the masses at large?
(I know for sure the Brooklyn Red Devils are not in Brooklyn http://www.arsdbombers.com)
I call shenanigans
I don't think a single player here would skate on a banked track & agree to be tossed over the rail without a helmet.
I know!
The only thing I could think of while watching this clip was, "OMG, why aren't they wearing helmets??"
North Star Supernovas Day in Minneapolis
Minneapolis Mayor Rybak proclaimed April 10, 2010 as North Star Supernovas Day. We are pretty excited about it:
http://www.mspnewsroom.com/page/2/North-Star-Supernovas-Day.jsp
In a related matter, August
In a related matter, August 14th is National Creamsicle Day.
April 23
In a similar vein, April 23 is Home Run Day. You probably can't get a creamsicle at a ballpark but you can buy beer. If you wait until August 5th, it will be International Beer Day. But then it will no longer be Home Run Day. But it will be National Waffle Day. Turn that waffle into a cone and you have a place to put your creamsicle.
powell
eric powell's piece for jam is the jam! do yourselves a favor and get it.
You're such a nerd. But
You're such a nerd. But seriously, it's rad as hell.
Goon
Eric Powell's doing a story?
Sold!
Too many versions of old school bakery..err...fakery
misinforming the masses. I don't doubt that the WFTDA is promoting FT, but man, I think we need a full court media press.
Are you kidding?
A full court media press seems like acknowledging the totally fucking ridiculous, giving it more power. It would probably benefit the sport more to give out creamsicles than history lessons and reality litmus tests, anyway. The people who care know good derby, and the civilians that are (or could be) fans because they love girls in skimpy clothes getting knocked down probably don't care about the difference between what we think's real and what an ARSD player thinks is real, anyway. Its all girls playing contact, right? I mean for fucks sake, I watch UFC, which is totally real - but I still bet on who's going to win based on which dude is wearing gayer shorts (and ps - that works. I always win). Think the UFC dudes that train, bleed and live fighting would appreciate that aspect of my fandom? They'd probably be offended, but hopefully they're doing what they do for more satisfaction than just my fan appreciation (or what parts of their performance I derive my appreciation from).
Anyways, choreographed derby players have always insisted that what they do is "real," same as WWE style wrestlers insist the same. It is real to them. They just have a different definition of the word, apparently.
Wow...thanks for reminding
Wow...thanks for reminding you why I miss you so much Ivanna!
Who Cares

Couldn't agree more.
As a former fighter of the UFC & Pancrease, I can tell you that the fighters care. However, any time you see most sports portrayed through mainstream media, they are portrayed very poorly. The more involvement you have with something, the more you will see how far Hollywood is off the mark. Do you really thing outlaw bikers are like "Sons of Anarchy" or that detectives act at all like they do on " Law & Order". Let's face it, any coverage is good coverage. We are all experiencing audience capacity like never before & reaping the benefits of main stream media. Who cares if they fuck it up. If it makes people wonder, it'll make them check it out for themselves.
PS...Could anyone but Jimmy Fallon play an announcer???
yea
i think anybody could do a better job than jimmy fallon in that position!
Yeah, butt
Who would you cast to play Dumptruck?
we had an answer for that!
"Sadly, the real Dumptruck will be unable to star in the DRD movie due to a conflicting, once in a lifetime movie opportunity to play a street-hardened cop who has his life turned upside-down when a distant relative dies and leaves her 74 cats in the care of our beloved Mr. Truck. You'll laugh through your tears as Dumptruck learns a little bit about himself, about life, and about all those darned cats! In his place, Lt. Jim Dangle of RENO 911! will step in to play the role of the famous DRD trackside announcer. Behold:

Good times with DCRD...
Just wanted to share.

Will this be the next derby film?
Jennifer Aniston in a romcom/story of salvation about derby, maybe?
http://books.simonandschuster.com/Going-in-Circles/Pamela-Ribon/97814165...
if not JAn, then Ginnifer Goodwin
Or Jennifer Connelly? I think she'd be more believable, maybe? Or maybe Chloe Sevigny. That would be nice. I <3 The Sev.
Anyway, I feel like that plot would be much easier to relate to/more realistic than Whip It!, if only because it shows adults with (or who had) "normal lives", not a runaway teen, being changed by derby.
Sounds like Oxygen/Lifetime Chick Flick cliche
In the future, if there's another derby screenplay, I'd prefer something with a bit more grit, say on the North Dallas Forty level.
Hilary Swank? Katee Sackhoff?
North Dallas Forty
Was awesome. I loved that movie.
What about Kate Beckinsale as in Underworld but on skates?
She is a bad ass in that movie much like most derby girls.
There's blood and bone crunching. Just like in derby.
And she's hot.... just like in derby.
I think we just work out a screenplay and its done.
Imagine you are the casting director...
This is starting to sound a lot like the Denver Roller Dolls April 2010 ticket contest, whose prompt was: "Imagine that you are the casting director for the Denver Roller Dolls Hollywood feature film. Who would you cast? Name one actor and the Denver Roller Doll he or she would play."
We got some pretty hilarious responses. Click here to read: http://www.facebook.com/denverrollerdolls?v=app_2347471856&ref=ts#!/note.php?note_id=380981059353
This was written by one of
This was written by one of our skaters, May Q. Holla (aka Pamela Ribon). It's a really great, funny book and definitely skewers more adult than "Whip It" (which was also written by our Maggie Mayhem). We have a lot of talented scribes in LADD. Kasey Bomber and Axles of Evil's book on derby should be coming out in a few months as well.
Don't forget this special RollerCon story...
Vegas Confessions 5: Roller Derby Girl (Unabridged)
I listened to some sample audio of it, what little I could get out of the opening indicated it was about a middle-aged southern skater who was in town for RollerCon. Yeah, they actually used the name "RollerCon" in the audio book. Though I think it was described as a "roller derby conference" rather than as a convention.
Anyways, it got two stars like every other naughty audio book that site offers, which kind of almost made me want to spend the $1.04 to give it a listen.
Poobah, your encyclopedic knowledge amazes & frightens
But if you do buy it, will you let me know if its worth the time it takes to listen? I don't mind the dollar, but the time is way harder to find!!!
