Preview: Montreal @ Carolina

RALEIGH, NC -- Busy Montreal comes down into the States yet again on Sunday, playing their eighth WFTDA sanctioned bout of 2010 as they go up against an experienced team looking at a recent slide in Carolina.

After opening their season with losses to Tucson and Charm City, Montreal has been on a tear, defeating Arizona, Connecticut, DC, Suburbia and Hammer City by at least 50 points each (and taking down Hammer City and Arizona by over 100 points each.) The Carolina game, though, seems likely to provide more of a challenge than the previous five.

Carolina, in contrast, only has 2 WFTDA bouts so far this year, hanging in there with longtime rivals Boston for about 45 minutes before Boston pulled away in the final stretch to win 110-55. The same weekend, they opened up a 50 point lead over Providence before suffering a late-game collapse and winning by a single point in the last jam.

For Carolina, this bout's roster looks to be a unique one -- for the first time since the 2008 Nationals, they're once again suiting up veteran Roxy Rockett, and for the first time ever, league founder Celia Fate makes an appearance on the all-star roster. However, they'll also be missing a number of important personnel, most notably jammer-killer Ms. Anthrope the Mordant, double-threats DVS and Kitty Crowbar and Daisy Rage. A solid bench steps up to fill those holes, but against a rapidly improving Montreal crew, Carolina could very easily find themselves missing those elements in a narrow game.

Montreal is also down some skaters -- energetic jammer Beater Pan-Tease continues to recover from injury, while Wrath Poutine will be unable to make the trip and the American embargo on intimidating blocker Trash 'n' Smash remains in place.

Carolina is currently #5 in the East and just a hair ahead of #6 Providence, so a Montreal victory over Carolina would go a long way towards allowing Montreal to solidify their case for a top-ten ranking in the Eastern Region and its attendant invitation to this year's Regionals tournament. Montreal is currently officially ranked #13 in the region, although their first-quarter wins over #9 DC and #11 Connecticut will likely see them rise when the 2nd quarter WFTDA rankings are released.

Montreal = Really Good

I had no idea what to expect coming into the bout, but now I can tell you impressive Montreal is; athetic, disclipled, deep, and strategically sound. The East region had better take notice.

Montreal is awesome

Their feet were like "giddity giddity" all night long.
They were like a bunch of wild stallions... hitting a vacant island... while stylin'. I lie not. Such a sight to behold.
mad love to you ladies Montreal!

2nd quarter

When do 2nd quarter rankings come out?

Rankings

Totally a guess, but historical information would suggest some time in late July.

Here's a guess

About one quarter after the first quarter's rankings are released? Which should hopefully be fairly soon.

Though given the outcome of this bout, they are likely to be outdated by the time they are released (at least as far as the East is concerned).

First quarter's rankings are based upon bouts from January 1st to March 30th, I believe. Second quarter's are based upon results from April 1st to June 30th. Hey, what do you know, ECDX is RIGHT IN TIME for those all-important tournament seeding rankings!

We'd better get used to it.

After seeing the Carolina vs Montreal scores & seeing London's scores against both CTRG & PRD, we better get used to the fact that Roller Derby isn't just an American sport anymore. Both teams have grown considerably over the past few years. I wouldn't be surprised to see either of them on the competing for the national title sooner than later.

National Title

At that point does it become the INTERNATIONAL title?
Just sayin'

Possibly, but NHL and NBA

Possibly, but NHL and NBA still has not changed their names despite including Canadian teams. They still would not if some teams of other countries join.

Besides, would be amusing if a derby team from another country comes, wins the Nationals, and takes the american title with them to their home country, ha!

The National title

Eventually, it would be great if 'winning the Hydra' became as well known as 'winning the Stanley cup' and then we could do away with the "National" title bit altogether!

WFTDA is way ahead of you

They've already removed the word "National" from The 2010 WFTDA Championship Tournament.

It was definitely an exciting week for global derby!

but then there's the pesky public

Even if WFTDA doesn't call it Nationals, explaining the significance to the general public may include that term for awhile yet..

Well, the general public in

Well, the general public in the US that is. Here in Montreal, I think "WFTDA Championship Tournament" probably holds more impact than "Nationals".

"Nationals"

I thought there was talk last year of transitioning from calling it "Nationals" to calling it the "WFTDA Championship".

If it was international *enough*

Then you'd still have a need for a national tournament, and the team that came out on top of that would maybe go on to a "World Cup"?

Seriously, you gonna roll all of Europe into the "East Region"? And Australia/New Zealand and Tazmania into West?

If roller derby keeps growing, and the international scene keeps going in its current direction of coming up on the competitive level, "Nationals" is going to be a contest for the "North American" region, and Internationals would be a true "world" contest...unlike the "World Series".

Do you mean the world games?

For real, we need to get in on THAT. I honestly think it's not too far away, FIRS just needs to recognize roller derby as a discipline.

another opinion

I, personally, think it would be ideal to call it the WFTDA Finals. The Championship game is the one that is played for the Hydra, but there is only ONE Championship game. Sort of how the NBA has the Finals? Same with the NHL, it's the Stanley Cup Finals. It's different than, say, the NFL who has ONE final game to determine the best of the best.

What we formally called Nationals and now, rightfully so out of respect to those leagues in the WFTDA that are based outside the US, refer to as the Championships is a series of bouts played to determine the Champion of the WFTDA, hence me suggesting Finals.

Just my opinion, though, and what the hell do I know. Too many concussions!

Word Nerd View

The event would be "The WFTDA Championship Tournament" or "Championship" and the final game would be "The Championship Game" or "The Final".
