Preview: #11 Charm City @ #2 Gotham

NEW YORK, NY -- This Saturday marks the opening of the 2010 Gotham Girls Roller Derby home season. The opening bout will feature interleague action, pitting the Gotham Girls All-Stars (officially ranked #1 in the WFTDA East Division, #2 nationally by Derby News Network) against Baltimore’s Charm City Roller Girls All-Stars (#4 in the WFTDA East, #11 nationally by DNN) at Schwartz Athletic Center on the Long Island University-Brooklyn campus. The undercard features the GGRD All-Boro team, the Wall Street Traitors, in a 40-minute exhibition bout against the Lake Effect Furies of the Queen City Roller Girls from Buffalo, NY.

DNN's live video coverage of this bout is provided by Gotham Girls Roller Derby. Coverage starts at 7:30pm Eastern.

Gotham Girls All-Stars vs. Charm City All-Stars

The GGRD All-Stars begin 2010 at #2 in the national derby rankings, one step down from a year ago, when they were fresh off winning the 2008 WFTDA championship. After being knocked out of the 2009 national tournament by the eventual winners, Olympia, Washington’s Oly Rollers, Gotham comes into 2010 hungry and with a new look.

Most notable are the absences of powerful blockers Polly Gone and Surly Temple, and agile jammer/blocker Barbara Ambush, all lost to retirement at the end of 2009. The All-Stars add 2nd year skaters OMG WTF and Steel Magnolia, along with 3rd year skater Haulin’ Cass and returning veteran Carmen Monoxide, who skated with Gotham in 2005 and re-joined the league in 2009. In 2010, Gotham will look to improve upon their 7-2 2009 record, and perhaps start a new winning streak to rival their record 18-game streak that spanned 2008 and 2009.

Charm City’s All-Stars already have 2 WFTDA sanctioned bouts under their belts in 2010, against Montreal (#13 WFTDA East, unranked by DNN) and Richmond, VA’s River City Rollergirls (unranked by either system). They easily dispatched both opponents; besting Montreal by a score of 159-57 and coming close to breaking the all-time score differential record in a 409-22 pounding of River City. After taking on Gotham this weekend, they’ll move on to the West Coast for matchups against DNN's #6 Rose City, #1 Oly, and #7 Rat City, all in one weekend.  Charm City began 2009 with a similarly frenetic schedule, taking on opponents in doubleheaders and compiling a 13-5 record that ended with a 4th place finish at the WFTDA Eastern Regional tournament in September. In 2010 they’ll look to improve upon their 2009 performance with a trip to Nationals.

In their last face-off, Gotham won over Charm City, 120-72, buoyed by a 75-point jamming performance by Bonnie Thunders. A repeat performance of this win by Gotham would re-assert the perennial power’s strength in the East region, and a win by Charm City would scramble the national rankings and make for some interesting competition on the road to Regionals.

I'll be glued to my computer Saturday night

I'm very excited by the new additions that Charm is bringing in since last season. As long as Charm can play both halves like they played the second half last year (51-48) then there's a great opportunity for an upset.

Give 'em hell Charm!

I can barely

contain myself! I am so excited to watch this bout!

AAAAAAhhhhhh!!!

Good luck CCRG!

XOXO

Furies!!

Let me just say, speaking unofficially but enthusiastically, I've been a member of the Queen City Roller Girls for 4 years now and while we've done a lot in that time, we've never been *quite* so excited about anything as we are about skating against the Traitors!! In NYC!!! (Little-known trivia fact: We're the third-oldest league in New York State, after Gotham and Hudson Valley, which latter group only edges us out by a matter of months. Oh but we're the second-biggest city in the state, by a healthy margin; chew on *that* statistic!)
We've skated out before, most notably vs. Steel City's B team and Hammer City's Eh Team, as well as hosting Montreal before they were WFTDA (but not before they were fun!), and Philly's Broad Street Butchers (who are approximately the classiest dames ever, by the way). But this is the year we're gunning for the gusto; it's also the first year we've had this classy, easy-to-tragically-typo team name. (Think about it. Hey, it's awesomer than Queen City All Stars, our previous name. This is our first bout with the new uniforms too; I haven't even seen them!)
I know Hambone's been watching our highlight reels!! (youtube.com/qcrg)
Alas, I will have to watch from home, as will the Furies' mascot, who has not yet been debuted and could not make the trip either. (Costume's still in the works, but would've been done if only we could've made it.)
I am totally pumped to watch all my girls but want to give a few heads-up to the spectators to look out for some interesting people: #19 Argo is a former [quad!] speed-skating champ, #525 Addy Rawl was a rookie this season [Queen City's home season began in December] and this will be her travel team debut but she is, we theorize, part robot, #360 Lip Service's day job is actually roller rink DJ and she once, when very young, skated in a roller derby revival involving a figure-8 track and I believe a crocodile pit, #420 Mexicali Bruise is a 4-season veteran who has never left the top 3 ranking for lead point-scoring jammers in the league-- including the season she gave birth in the middle of-- and #82 Tuesday Hula skated for the San Diego Derby Dolls in March Radness last month. I could give you mini-bios for everyone because they're all that rad, but I know we're not the main show, I don't want to make this too long to read.
(We've got a few refs who are skating too and they are just vibrating out of their skin with excitement-- Hambone and Ginger Snap came up to help us out a couple seasons back, guest-reffing a bout and giving us some awesome pointers, and we've been dying to come down to Gotham ever since.)

I'm pumped for Charm City too, but I just thought I'd make a few introductions-- the opener should be fun to watch even for all y'all who haven't heard of us-- yet-- and it's always even better when you know a few names. Winning or no, Queen City is so excited to be in Gotham and on Derby News Network.

LET'S GO BUFFALO!!!

Let's go, Gotham!

Philly's home season opens this weekend as well, otherwise I'd be up to see you! Give 'em hell!

Also, I am wondering. I had heard that Polly Gone and Barbara Ambush were moving West, not retiring! Say it ain't so, DNN! These skaters are too good to not have their wheels about them!

West? Southwest? Northwest:)?

Go Gotham!

Polly Gone and Barbara Ambush aren't retired to the best of my knowledge. Don't worry.

it's a team game, but...

... but these MVP trophies (generously sponsored by the world-famous Mott Haven House of Toast) are going to make mighty purty additions to four skaters' what-not shelves on Saturday nite!
