The event starts with what is arguably the marquee matchup with Dallas against Cincinnati. Both teams recently suffered stinging upsets -- Cincinnati dropped a very narrow match to iconoclastic San Diego two weeks ago, 129-108, while Dallas lost to an improving Atlanta team twice during the course of the Clover Cup tournament in early March. Dallas is in the WFTDA South Central division while Cincy is North Central; both are currently officially ranked #4 in their respective divisions.
Due in part to the unique double-elimination structure of the aforementioned Clover Cup, where Dallas ended up playing 5 bouts in two days, Dallas is far and away the most active WFTDA team so far this year in terms of sanctioned bouts played. By the time their three bouts this weekend are over, they'll have played a remarkable 13 bouts in just under two months.
Though Dallas / Cincinnati may be the most compelling matchup from a national-rankings standpoint, the rest of the weekend has some particularly interesting angles for the 2010 WFTDA South Central Regional Tournament. The WFTDA ranking quarter extends from April and June, and tournament seedings will be based heavily on what happens in these three months.
Tampa Bay lost twice by fairly similar margins to Dallas at the Clover Cup, but they also got a win over a Houston team that appears to be rebuilding after their trip to last year's Nationals. With Tampa currently at #7 and Houston at #3 in the South Central pending the release of WFTDA's next ranking, Tampa is likely to pick up at least a slot this quarter and more if they can deal Dallas an upset loss. Dallas plays back-to-back games to start the Franky Panky, so Tampa gets to go in fresh against a potentially tired Dallas crew in the Saturday 2pm match.
Tallahassee is a fairly unknown quantity on the WFTDA interleague scene, with only two sanctioned matches to their name -- but the more recent one, in August of 2009, was a narrow 124-113 loss to Tampa Bay. If they equal or improve on that showing, it will most likely propel them into the top ten of the South Central standings and a Regionals slot. Currently, Tallahassee is officially ranked #14 in the region. Tallahassee vs. Tampa Bay is the last bout of the weekend at 3:45pm Eastern on Sunday afternoon.

Franky Panky?
Would anyone in the know care to elaborate on the origin and meaning behind calling this thing Franky Panky?
Tampa's beloved mascot...
... is Frank T. Flamingo, for whom the event was named.
wow

Unfortunately once I heard that "Sunshine Skate 2010" had been postponed until December, I switched my vacation from work so I could ref out bout in Gainesville the 17th. I would have LOVED to come ref, and get to meet JFM in person. Sad Panda, I had to work, but Mrs. Darkjester enjoyed DNN's coverage on my behalf! Thank you DNN!

...and get to meet JFM in person...
It's highly over rated.
