Weekly Rollup and Open Thread, 3/26/2010

CNN attempts to undercut competitor DNN by running a piece on the Boston Derby Dames today.

Impressively high-quality video recap of the Denver Roller Dolls' home season opener, featuring exactly enough Dumptruck to leave you craving more.

Remember that depressing story we linked a couple of weeks back about the Lingerie Football League? It just got more depressing.

Probably only about .0005 percent of people in the world would find this amusing in the least, but fortunately the majority of that minority read this site.

To the best of our knowledge, the Sao Paulo Roller Derby is the first South American derby league. Not too surprisingly, they seem to be having some trouble getting off the ground, but we certainly do hope to see Sao Paulo vs. Abu Dhabi someday.

Nikon campaign featuring some of the Windy City Rollers ... and a mysterious "Glamour Jammer."

Your civic duty for this week: Help the Sun State Roller Girls (Brisbane, Australia) get sponsored by Hahn Super Dry. (And while you're at it, we mentioned this last week, but Angel City really needs votes for their Pepsi proposal and you can vote every day, if that's the kind of thing you like to do.)

AND FINALLY ... get ready for one of the greatest meme hijacks of all time. OF ALL TIME. Nobody seems to be taking credit for this, but the perceptive viewer may notice some clues.

OMG

i was just laughing so hard at work i was asked if i was ok....that video is AMAZING.

WI Guys

That video is almost as funny as the same clip used in the Wisconsin Guys smack-talk video about an upcoming bout between the MAD ROLLIN DOLLS, www.madrollindolls.com, and the WISCONSIN GUYS, local talk radio hosts on AM 1670. www.thewisconsinguys.com.
They are playing us as the Bruised Brothers on April 24, 2010 at half time. An MRD team known as the Bad Habits will crush their tiny man souls!!!
See their much funnier version here: http://www.thewisconsinguys.com/?p=1277

Also...

They have a couple of other videos up on their channel about it. Here's them taping a warmup & passing it off as an actual bout:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGnDGdpJrvE

And then they took the pictures our photographer, Papa-RaZZi, took of them at their first practice with us, and turned it into a soaring patriotic musical epic:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEdsw7Txawc

Of course, they'll get whomped. But oh what fun we'll have. :)

Sad

Looking at those picture I wouldn't bet on them with someone else's money. Props for giving it a try but they are going to lose big. I just hope the girls go easy on them. However, if it was the Magic City Misfits men's derby team playing the girls then I might bet the other way.

Glamour Jammer

That's the mysterious Peglegs in the Nikon commercial. She retired from Windy City last year (I think). Both her and her sister, Perkalicious, are former Dutchland skaters.

yup

Peg Legs retired from the WCR after the 2009 home season. She made an appearance at the 2008 WFTDA National Tournament in Portland, too. Miss you, Peg!

glad the video was last, quelling violence!

LFL...I just want to kick the shit out of you. Another incidence of voluntary exploitation on the part of these women (grr!) and their all too eager counterparts.

It simultaneously makes me furious about our pitifully inconsistent equality and so so so happy and relieved to participate in a conscious, strong, self-governed, and unapologetic sport and organization.

But oh my...that video...oh god...(pun incidental)...so ridiculous, so hilarious. Yes, outside world. Feminists do have a sense of humor.

On the Peru thing.

Peru Roller Derby does not appear to be a league. I found a Peruvian-American skater, and pointed her to that group. She speaks the language.

I asked her to confirm if it was or wasn't a league forming up there. She told me that it was a page for people interested in skating roller derby in Peru. She reported that there seemed to be a lot of interest in it. She indicated that they're finding it difficult to procure skate gear.

As to whether that interest will germinate into one or more leagues is anyone's guess. I'm hopeful.

There is currently a league forming in Monterrey, Mexico. I don't believe they have a Facebook page or anything yet.

Yes, there is a league

hi, last year was our first year creating the league.
now we are close to 30 skaters, and definetly a league.

we have overcome the lack of gear and skates in our contry.
we still have a hard time finding good protective gear and a good place to skate.

but we have guts and courage and we ARE a league and we plan to be the best we can.

and now we have a facebook page, search for us as Toxic Lima Roller Derby

Lingerie Football is bunk.

Lingerie Football is bunk. Margarita Wrestling is where it's at!

The video is funny, but just

The video is funny, but just to provide correction to it, it only takes two years if your league says so. Boo Olympic Stockholm decision!

Dust Bowl Results - WHA?

1st Place: Silicon Valley Rollergirls
2nd Place: Sac City Rollers
3rd Place: Tucson Roller Derby
4th Place: Santa Cruz
5th Place: Derby Revolution of Bakersfield
6th Place: Sonoma County Roller Derby

Sorry if I'm jumping the gun and a whole writeup is in the works, but I haven't heard much, if anything, about the teams playing in that tourney in Bakersfield last weekend.

Are some (or all) of those B teams? What are the rosters? Did only 6 teams play, or were there more that didn't place?

I find the results surprising so I am interested in finding out what's what, if anyone knows!

And speaking of Dust, I am also interested in hearing about the upcoming Dust Devil invitational in Tucson. Who is playing? How is it organized, is it an elimination tourney or single games or...?

Nosy in SoCal,
Ivanna S. Pankin

There were ten teams playing

There were ten teams playing but six teams went on to Day 2 to place 1 - 6. None of the teams were B teams. The teams who played on the first day but didn't move on were: AZRD, Port City, Mission City, and Central California Area Derby. The only full bouts were the Championship and third place games I think. Tucson was playing with a very short roster but were strong all tournament. Sonoma County had to forfeit on the second day due to excessive injuries. and Silicon Valley just straight up steamrolled everyone :)

Dustbowl Info

O.K. I'll try. As far as I know no writeup is coming, we're all just too exhausted and the info is scattered. I was a NSO at the tournament, and it was two days of awesome derby.

First a lot of good info can be found at http://www.dustbowl.derbyrevolution.com/bracket.html

10 teams divided into 2 groups played round-robin Saturday, that was supposed to be twenty 20 minute mini-bouts Saturday, but only 18 got played, last two were played early Sunday morning. The top three from each group went on to the playoffs. Playoffs were 30 minute mini-bouts with 3rd place and Championship being full 60 minute bouts. They were again seeded by result and point spread. Example: Both Tucson and Silicon Valley won their group 4-0, but point spread was Silicon Valley +262 Tucson +142, so Silicon Valley got top seed. Seeding for Sunday ended up 1-6 as follows: Silicon Valley, Tucson, Sac City, Santa Cruz, Sonoma, Bakersfield.

I'd say everybody bought their A-team, but Sonoma and Tucson brought small teams and players got hurt. So much so that half way through the Santa Cruz/Sonoma quarterfinal, Sonoma forfeited the match and the rest of the day, as they were down to 5 skaters. Tucson played much of the tournament with 8 skaters (sure made penalty tracking easier). Everybody else was pretty much at full strength.

I don't know anything about Dust Devil, I heard that it was an event so Pacific could play the Arizona leagues, but other leagues asked to be invited and it just grew.

Bay Area Derby Girls

day one scores

Here are the scores that I had written down for Day One
Bracket One
TRD 43 vs Port City 10
Sonoma 55 vs Sac City 44
TRD 94 vs Mission City Brawlin Betties 7
Sonoma 55 vs Port City 13
Sac City 50 vs Mission City 16
TRD 51 vs Sonoma 37
Port City 25 vs Mission City 60
TRD 41 vs Sac City 33
Sonoma 47 vs Mission City 17
Sac City 121 vs Port City 11

TRD 4 -0
Sac City 3 -1
Sonoma 2 - 2
Mission City 1 - 3
Port City 0 - 4

Bracket Two
Silicon Valley Roller Girl (SVRG) 42 vs Derby Revolution of Bakersfield (DRB) 14
Santa Cruz Derby Girls (SCDG) 38 vs AZRD 25
SVRG 88 vs Central California Area Derby (CCAD) 9
SCDG 67 vs DRB 13
AZRD 112 vs CCAD 25
SVRG 68 vs SCDG 12
DRB 50 vs CCAD 18
SVRG 45 vs AZRD 31
Due to timing issues and an injury during the DRB vs CCAD bout, the last two bouts from day one were moved to early Sunday morning. I didn't get the scores from the bouts that were carried over to Sunday but:
SCDG (w) vs CCAD (l)
AZRD (l) vs DRB (w)

SVRG 4 - 0
Santa Cruz 3 - 1
DRB 2 - 2
AZRD 1 - 3
CCAD 0 - 4

some highlights for me were:
-Mission City pulling out a win over Port City, this was pretty unexpected. Mission City really rallied their strategy and teamwork and played strong during that bout.
-Bianka Trohl and Pixie Axe from TRD at one point doing a two jammer rotation. They had amazing endurance and were some of the most consistent jammers of the weekend.
-Watching Foxee Firestorm jam for Santa Cruz. She doesn't usually jam but she really stepped up to the plate and was a really solid jammer.

Also, our photographer has just started to post pictures from the tourney too: http://jwcotting.smugmug.com/Roller-Derby/Bakersfield-Dustbowl

-Coach Panda (SVRG)

We got something

I remember talking to Panda after the Santa Cruz/ Bakersfield game (SCDG 67 Bako 13) (SVRG 42 Bako 14), saying "Santa Cruz is looking pretty sharp." Panda responds "Don't worry. We got something for them." Silicon Valley 68 Santa Cruz 12.

Dustbowl Follow Up

WOW is all I can say about this weekend and the Dustbowl Invitational. Sorry for the late response but we are all trying to recover from this weekend. It was a great weekend for derby and some great bouts. I want to thank again all the teams, refs, officials and the announcers for an awesome job. Ladies played hard this weekend and shout out to Silicon for kicking some major booty. I am in the process of uploading all of the stats in the the stats sheets. I will have those numbers soon. Everyone that has posted on this subject has pretty much gave you the recap from this weekend. We are so glad that it went well and can't wait until next year. We hope to see the teams returning and some new ones interested. We would love to get the full 12 teams that we wanted this year, for next years. But the 10 teams that came really gave DRB some love. Thank you all. Shout out to Port City, Mission City, Arizona, and Central California area derby for giving it their all this weekend. And to Silicon, Sac City, Tucson, Santa Cruz way to go. Sonoma way to go and we are sorry for your injuries. We hope to see you back in full force soon. If you need anymore info please contact me. Thanks! Ima Blowbya DRB

Damn

Interesting - thanks!

Congratulations to Silicon. They came here recently and they were awesome.

My sympathies to Sonoma. That really sucks ass.

Tucson played it out with 8 - good for them! Back in 03 and 04 (the dark ages) AZRD & Tucson both used to have full bouts with as few as 7 players. Who ever thought that would be good training for a tourney now?!

Interesting bits

1st Day Saturday in Group play

Tucson/Sonoma bout
Sonoma lead from first jam building to a 25 point lead, Tucson worked there way back jamming Bianka Trohl #11 and Pixie Axe #33 until they take the lead for the first time in the second to last jam 35-33. Then in the last jam, Sonoma 4 and Tucson 2, 37-37, tie game! Overtime jam! Tucson 14-0! Tucson wins! 51-37

Also from Saturday Group play
Tucson/Sac City
Tuscon dominates, but Sac City hangs tough. Last jam by Sac City's Lucha is 14-0. Brings score to 41-33, Tucson's narrowest win.

Sunday Semi Final 30 minute mini-bout
Tucson vs Sac City
Huge battle! Half way though the bout and behind by 19, Sac City changes tactics and plays the slow game, but Tucson's experience seems certain win. Last jam; Tucson leads 50-41 and Pixie Axe gets lead jammer with 30 seconds left in the game, but a minute forty in the jam. Pixie is told to run the clock out, as Sac City has one timeout left. Pixie scores 3 points and then half the pack goes down in a big pileup, Pixie called for major back block. Lucha then breaks out of the pack and scores 14 points! 55-53, Sac City Wins! And goes on to the championship game.
