Local Bouts

[Minnesota Rollergirls] Atomic Bombshells 67, Garda Belts 42 -- In the penultimate event of the MNRG's season, the Gardas needed a strong win (47 points or more) in this match to displace their opponents as entrants into the finals.  They had a nice start as Garda jamming monster Suzie Smashbox outpaced the Bombshells' Mae Gusta for the first four points of this game...but the Atomic Bombshells returned fire as Venus Thightrap and Mae Gusta scored eleven unanswered in the next two jams, leaving it 11-8 Bombshells after ten.

The Gardas lost five minutes of scoring time as rookie jammer Cassie Rolle was forced into the box twice over four jams. The Bombshells stranded Cassie repeatedly and scored eight during the ensuing jamming drive.  While Suzie scored another five points for the Gardas in the next jam, that would be it for her team in the half (Bombshells up 23-13).

The Bombshells took five of the first six second-half leads, scoring twenty-seven points in ten minutes. That included a 13-point jam from Mae Gusta; Mae had a breakout match in the absence of fellow Bombshell jammer L'exi-cuter.  Meanwhile, Suzie Smashbox bore the brunt of a squeeze from the Bombshell co-captains and second-year players Diamond Rough and Tara Skatesov, containing her to just nine points over the same period.  The Bombshells were ahead 50-22 with 9:05 remaining.

Suzie began a comeback, scoring her first slam-plus as Tiki Torture and Citizen Pain provided coverage.  Cassie Rolle then scored four of her own to bring the game within seventeen. That was as far as the Gardas got; Suzie did not report to the line in time for her next jam, so Mae Gusta scored another eight unopposed. From there, the Bombshells maintained the lead.  Winning 67-42, the Bombshells are only one win away from the MNRG's Golden Skate and an undefeated season.

Bombshell Mae Gusta led all scoring with 41 points; Suzie Smashbox was responsible for nearly all of the Gardas' points with 38. -- Garrison Killer

[Minnesota Rollergirls] Rockits 129, Dagger Dolls 37
-- The rookie Dagger Doll jammer Killaman Jaro scored first blood with a grand slam as she sped past her opponent and found her own line amidst an infamously-stiff Rockit pack. However, the Dolls then fell flat as three of their next four jammers went to the box on track-cutting and back-blocking.  The Rockits, using slow-pack tactics, grabbed three double slams and 42 points during the ensuing power jams.

After twelve minutes, the Rockits had taken a convincing 42-5 lead. They continued to build on their score, rotating through five scoring jammers in the first half and keeping a lid on the Dollys, allowing them to score only a combined sixteen points in the last eight minutes. At the half, the Rockits were up 60-21.

The Rockits scored an average of six points each jam in the second half, and took the lead in every jam but one.  Despite strong hits from individual players, the Dagger Dolls could not contain the Rockit jammers within the pack.  After eleven minutes of sustained attack, the Rockits hit the century mark, 100-29. From there, the deal was all but sealed.

With this win, the Rockits take the second berth to the Minnesota local finals, where they will take on the Atomic Bombshells -- the only team that has previously beaten them for the Golden Skate.

Harmony Killerbruise led all scoring with 59 points, while rookie Killaman Jaro led the Dagger Dolls with 19. -- Garrison Killer

[Mad Rollin' Dolls] Reservoir Dolls 185, Quad Squad 56 -- The numbers were big for the Reservoir Dolls, but it was an aggressive and effective team effort in the pack that allowed them to steamroll long-time league rivals the Quad Squad 185-56.  The Gang Green jammers often found themselves bottled up for full two minutes as the ResDolls pack swarmed and switched off on the block.

Six Reservoir Dolls jammers scored in double figures.  Rosetta Stoned  led the charge this night with 49 points. Aleta the Hon was top scorer for the Quad Squad with 22 points. The normally high-scoring Thunder Kitten was held to held to her jersey number with just 11 points. -- Geoffrey Saucer

[DC Rollergirls] DC Demoncats 108, Cherry Blossom Bombshells 88 -- The Cherry Blossom Bombshells were aiming for their first win of the DC Rollergirls' closely matched home season March 7, in the final game before the league's championship. This bout was a rematch with the DC DemonCats, who won a 76-70 slog between the two teams in November.

The DemonCats got off to a strong start when Bombshell jammer Sookie Slaughterhouse took a trip to the penalty box on the first jam, freeing up the Cats' Free Radical to go on a 14-point scoring spree. The DemonCat jammers continued to grab lead for the first few jams, but the Bombshells' jammers were never far behind, forcing some quick calls and bringing the score to 21-7 five minutes in.

The teams stayed closely paced, with the DemonCats wielding control of the front with their three-woman wall and the Bombshells hanging up the DemonCat jammers in the back and middle of the pack. However, thanks to smart jamming by Battery Operated and Slaughterhouse, the Bombshells began to pick away at the lead, closing the gap to 34-21 DemonCats halfway through the first period.

But the Bombshells lost steam just as quickly when they hit penalty trouble late in the half. All-Star pivot Hoova Dayum also proved to be a consistent problem for the Bombshells' jammers. The 'Cats closed out the half with a more solid lead, 62-38.

The Bombshells came out swinging and closed the gap to 63-56 within five minutes, again putting the lead tantalizingly close. The determined DemonCats refused to let go of the lead, however, continuing to dominate with their strong front-of-the-pack defense. Halfway through the second period, the DemonCats again began to build on their solid foundation, bringing the score to 80-62 with 16 minutes to go.

Despite some more strong jamming from Slaughterhouse, including an unanswered 9-point pass, the 'Cats well-rounded play kept the spread around 20 points for the remainder of the game. Solid jamming from the DemonCats' Obitchuary, whom the team has used primarily as a blocker in the past, helped bring the 'Cats over the century mark. Final score: DC DemonCats 108, Cherry Blossom Bombshells 88.

The 2009 season champion DemonCats will try to hold on to their trophy at the DC Rollergirls intraleague championship bout April 10, when they will face off against the 2007 and 2008 champs Scare Force One. -- Lois Slain

[Fox City Foxes] Paper Dolls 157, Pushy Posse 39
-- The cellar-dwelling Pushy Posse has never, in the three-year history of the Fox Cityz Foxz, defeated the reigning champions the Paper Dolls -- and, even though the Dolls were remiss their star jammer Tartlette due to illness, they had little trouble in preserving the status quo.

The Posse jumped out to their one and only lead after the first jam, with talented first year skater Mistress Miter Saw eking out a 4-3 Pushy Posse victory over Paper Dolls co-captain Lolly PopYa. Any notion of an upset was quickly put to rest in the second jam, however, when the Dolls’ Slick Nikki exploded for a quadruple grand slam, setting the tone for the rest of the evening with a 23-4 Paper Doll lead after two jams. The Posse -- fielding a jammer corps consisting of two first-year skaters and two first-bout-ever newbies -- could only muster nine more points in the half against the Dolls’ veteran crew, with multiple grand slam jams for Bad Luck Charm, Slick Nikki, and rarely-jammed captain Anya B. Hinds pushing the Dolls’ lead out to 104-13 at the end of the first period.

The teams reconvened for an entertaining -- though not terribly competitive -- second half, with the Dolls keeping the crowd in the game by essentially goofing off for the next half-hour with waitress whips, star passes, and even a primordial leg whip (albeit one that wouldn’t exactly have D-Bomb filing retirement papers). Discounting a three-jam span where jammer Anya B. Hinds whirled into and out of the penalty box on multiple occasions, the Paper Dolls fielded a new jammer each jam (ten in all), while, not surprisingly, the Posse’s bouting virgins -- Mexican Yoo Azz and Blazin’ Butterfly -- struggled, finishing the bout with 2 and 5 points, respectively. Although the Posse doubled their offensive output in the second half, they were still no match for the veteran Paper Dolls, who skated off the floor with a 157-39 victory.

Slick Nikki of the Paper Dolls led all scorers with 39 points -- equalling the Pushy Posse’s entire offensive output for the game -- on only three jams. Mistress Miter Saw and Ima Wine Ho paced the Pushy Posse with 16 points each. -- Rev. Norb

New Skids on the Highway

Very impressive wins this weekend for the Montreal team, especially when you consider how much time was spent on the road getting from city to city to skate.

Dallas

Congrats Atlanta! And wow Dallas, 5 games? You are much crazier than us!! Although 3 games, 21 hrs of driving, and 11 players still makes me feel pretty crazy.

WFTDA Record?

They also played the Texacutioners twice and Houston twice like a week before at Governors cup. That's 9 sanctioned bouts in two weeks, that's got to be a record? Also, props to ATL, Dallas just couldn't pull it together, can't wait to see the rematch when Miley Virus and Roxie Laroo are able to jam for us, hopefully that will make for a closer game! ;)

Wollongong-Illawarra?

Wollongong-Illawarra? OK, so that's it's derby name. What's the area's REAL name?

Wollongong

Is actually the name of our city believe it or not! The region of NSW that we are in is called the Illawarra, named after the big lake in the area I believe.

Much Derby love from the WIRDos! And thanks for the write up guys!

Weird? Nope, just WIRD

Like Wollongong is so much stranger as a name than Kalamazoo ...

Woy Woy Roller Derby (Woy Woy Derby Derby?) ... now that'll be weird.

(To forestall the next question, NSW stands for New South Wales. It's a state on the east coast and, to cut directly to what's important to non-Australians, is home to Bondi Beach.)

Yan Yean Roller Queens? And

Yan Yean Roller Queens?

And Wollongong isn't even in the top ten of awesome Australian place names... try Wolloomooloo, Mullumbimby, Japoonvale, Wee Waa, Maroochydore, Murwillumbah, Goondiwindi, or Queanbeyan.

Why does it sound like

Why does it sound like Australian towns, cities, regions were often named by people who were drunk at the time?

"I know how to spell banana

"I know how to spell banana ... I just don't know how to STOP spelling it ..."

Wagga Wagga is my favourite - sounds like drowning, woggawoggawoggawogga, which is funny cos it's inland. It would take an effort of will to drown there.

Don't Forget New Zealand!

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu Roller Derby!

And Wales....!

If we can get a team started here, we are in business:

llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

(p.s. I can pronounce this)

And Wales.

With Northern Ireland having Belfast Roller Derby, Wales is the only country in the United Kingdom with NO ROLLER DERBY. Did the miners strike for naught? Do I need to start writing a Welsh version of "A Modest Proposal?"

I'm sure Billy Bragg could write a heartfelt song about how the English have conspired to keep the Welsh from enjoying roller derby. John Cale and Tom Jones could sing it as a duet at the Cardiff Rollergirls' first bout.

Starting troubles in places I'll likely never visit. I can't help it, I'm half-Irish, half-Quebecois. Genetics has made me a drunkard who isn't fond of the English. Nothing personal.

Wales does have a team!!

Cardiff Dragon Dolls are recruiting and training now...

But thats south Wales, and as any good Cymraeg knows, the north is TOTALLY different.

Welsh Derby :)

There's also a team based in Machynlleth (Mid-Wales Roller derby) and a new team just setting up in Swansea (Swansea City Slayers). There's interest for a team in Wrexham and Bangor but I've not heard much more than that recently - though there's a new team in Shrewsbury (which is pretty much next to Wrexham).

We do need more teams across the green green grass of home though :D

I was so excited when I sent Hurt the Minnesota scores...

...because I also sent along our attendance, which broke our month old record of 4723 with 4991.

Hurt responded almost immediately with "Rat City got 5118."

So close, and yet so far away. It will be difficult to get any more people into the Roy Wilkins Auditorium (we turned away a couple hundred each night), but we'll give it a shot for the finals. After that, Key Arena has got the definite space advantage, and we ain't moving.

Congrats, Rat City!

Refreshing Change

Yet another reason to love MNRG. We're the only sports team in Minnesota that isn't begging the state to build us a new stadium.

Having said that, though, there are ways to increase the capacity at The Roy. Fortunately for me those kinds of decisions are way outside my responsibility.
