General Interleague

BAD Richmond Wrecking Belles 211, Sac City 91
-- In the first bout of 2010 for both teams, a veteran-heavy loadout from Bay Area's local squad the Richmond Wrecking Belles took down Sac City (Sacramento) by 120 points.

The Belles fielded a team largely consisting of nationally known veterans like Demanda Riot, Liza Machete, Velveteen Savage, Astronaughty, Friskie Meow and Nina Beretta.  Other Belles skaters were home league veterans with many years experience; jammer Tanya Hardon was only Belle skating in her first bout.  Sac City also fielded some veterans, including star jammer Lil Punk, blockers Mad Katter, Bipolar Roller and Stinger, and all-around threat Lucha, but the rest of the Rollers appeared to be new.

The first jam ended in a 3-3 tie, but from then on the Belles steadily pulled away.  By the 15 minute mark of the first half, the Belles had a 62-28 lead. By then it seemed the Belles had the measure of the Rollers, shutting them out for the next 7 jams.  In that time the Belles scored relentlessly, capped by a 27-0 from Chantilly Mace in the thirteenth. The Rollers' Lil Punk and Lucha put 5 points up in the last two jams of the half, but the Belles were already nearing a 100 point margin with the score to 128-33.

The second half started off no better for the Rollers, as Chantilly Mace ran up a 20-0 jam in the second half's third jam, and by the 45 minute the score stood 169-67. The Belles ran into penalty box trouble late and the Rollers made the best of it, bring the final score to 211-91.

Belles standout jammers were Chantilly Mace with 79 points and La Femme Nikilla with 51.  Outstanding blockers were --to no one's surprise -- Demanda Riot, Liza Machete, Friskie Meow and Nina Beretta.  Rollers best jammers were Lucha with 39 points and Squid Vicious with 25.  Notable blockers were Lucha, Mad Katter and Scandaliz. -- Southbay

BCB Rushin’ Rollettes 141, MRD Vaudeville Vixens 140 -- If the Brew City Bruisers didn’t have a reputation for comeback wins before the appearance of a beefed-up Rushin’ Rollettes squad before a sell-out crowd in Madison, they do now. Mounting one comeback charge to finish the first half, and another in the second, the Rollettes pulled off a head-scratching 141-140 win in the last jam.

After a small initial lead for the Rushin’ Rollettes, the Vaudeville Vixens rolled out to a big 53-17 lead at the first quarter point behind two big jams from Darling Nikki and one from rookie Sugar Lumps.  Costly Vixen jammer penalties opened the way to a 15 point jam from Rollettes Hacksaw and 12 more from High-D Voltage to close the lead at half to 84-74.

Much to the delight of the home crowd, the Vixens grew the lead again to 40, 127-87.  Rejected Seoul, who normally skates for Brewcity home team Maiden Milwaukee, literally threw herself into scoring 15 big points with less than three minutes in the game to close the gap to 135-129.

Sugar Lumps, who would lead her team in scoring with 61, spent most of the final two jams in the penalty box with three jammer penalties.   Rejected Seoul skated last, and called the jam after regulation when Juke Boxx forced her to the infield. She didn’t know her total, and neither did the crowd. The jam ref held up five fingers for a 141-140 Rollettes win.  The refs conferenced in the infield and upheld the score.

The Rollettes put on a 54-13 scoring run in the final 15 minutes of the game. High D Voltage led the scoring for the Rushin’ Rollettes with 33 points; Rejected Seoul added 31. -- Geoffrey Saucer

FCF Wedgies 177, Harbor City 131 -- The Wedgies -- a hybrid, one-night-only team composed of members of the Fox City Foxz’ Rollergirl Regiment and EightQueen Wheelers squads -- jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead on the feisty but inexperienced Harbor City crew on the strength of jammer Cherry Grenade’s double-grand slam over a penalty-boxed Daisy Duker. After a 4-3 jam by the Wedgies’ Boun C. Ballz and a 9-nil outburst by Monkey Shines, it looked like the Wedgies might go into cruise control, up 23-3 after three jams, but a 14-0 spanking of Derrieress by the Dames’ Mic Wicked put the visiting Duluth squad right back iin the game at 23-17.

Six points turned out to be the closest Harbor City would get to the Wedgies, as multiple grand slam jjams by Cherry Grenade and Boun C. Ballz -- including a 20-0 rampage for Ballz in the twelfth jam -- helped the home team Wedgies put up a 107-42 lead at the half.

The second period started auspiciously enough for Harbor City, as Daisy Duker blasted out a 14-0 outburst in the half’s first jam, cutting the Wedgies’ lead to 107-56, but the home team kept their pedal to the metal thenceforth, happily going tit-for-tat with their opponents, trading four and eight point jams and killing the clock. Though plenty of spirited play was in evidence, the Roller Dames could not manage to cut the lead under forty points, and, when the dust settled, the Wedgies cruised to a 177-131 victory.

The Wedgies’ Cherry Grenade led all skaters in scoring with 55 points, while teammate Boun C. Ballz added 52. Harbor City was led by Scarlet Raven with 45, Daisy Duker with 41, and Mic Wicked with 38. Top defensive honors likely go to the Wedgies’ Punk ‘N’ Spice, who also added 21 points in two jams for a gaudy 10.5 points per jam. -- Rev. Norb

Wollongong-Illawarra 175, Newcastle 127 -- In the first of a three-game series and before a sell-out home crowd in Australia, Wollongong-Illawarra Roller Derby cruised to a substantial victory over the Newcastle Roller Derby League. Despite being close neighbours, the two teams have not previously met – this was, in fact, the first public game for WIRD.

The more experienced Newcastle team seemed outmuscled  throughout, struggling to adapt to the slow playing surface and the more physical style of play displayed by the home team. Opting for larger jammers as the game progressed showed some promise as a strategy; they were able to get through the pack and obtain lead jammer status, but were often unable to translate that success into points on the board.

Stax On and Brigand Strong impressed in their turns at the jam line, but the majority of jamming duties for NRDL were picked up by the wiry and reliable Hippie Hardarse. Big offensive hits from Godjilla Sold Separately and Dino La Rouge took their toll on WIRD jammers when they connected but were unable to stop the points racking up.

Wollongong set the tone of the game early with a muscular first jam and continued to rack up the points, leaving the score at 107 home, 77 visitors at halftime. Solid positional blocking by Shelby Unkonshus and White Hawk at the front of the pack was key to Wollongong's success in the game, stifling NRDL's ability to capitalise on power jam situations, while Kim Ocean was the standout jammer, with a 25-4 run at the 15-minute mark that set the crowd roaring.

Bout two of the series will occur in Newcastle on April 24, with the final meeting in Wollongong on May 15. -- Beck Wise

New Skids on the Highway

Very impressive wins this weekend for the Montreal team, especially when you consider how much time was spent on the road getting from city to city to skate.

Dallas

Congrats Atlanta! And wow Dallas, 5 games? You are much crazier than us!! Although 3 games, 21 hrs of driving, and 11 players still makes me feel pretty crazy.

WFTDA Record?

They also played the Texacutioners twice and Houston twice like a week before at Governors cup. That's 9 sanctioned bouts in two weeks, that's got to be a record? Also, props to ATL, Dallas just couldn't pull it together, can't wait to see the rematch when Miley Virus and Roxie Laroo are able to jam for us, hopefully that will make for a closer game! ;)

Wollongong-Illawarra?

Wollongong-Illawarra? OK, so that's it's derby name. What's the area's REAL name?

Wollongong

Is actually the name of our city believe it or not! The region of NSW that we are in is called the Illawarra, named after the big lake in the area I believe.

Much Derby love from the WIRDos! And thanks for the write up guys!

Weird? Nope, just WIRD

Like Wollongong is so much stranger as a name than Kalamazoo ...

Woy Woy Roller Derby (Woy Woy Derby Derby?) ... now that'll be weird.

(To forestall the next question, NSW stands for New South Wales. It's a state on the east coast and, to cut directly to what's important to non-Australians, is home to Bondi Beach.)

Yan Yean Roller Queens? And

Yan Yean Roller Queens?

And Wollongong isn't even in the top ten of awesome Australian place names... try Wolloomooloo, Mullumbimby, Japoonvale, Wee Waa, Maroochydore, Murwillumbah, Goondiwindi, or Queanbeyan.

Why does it sound like

Why does it sound like Australian towns, cities, regions were often named by people who were drunk at the time?

"I know how to spell banana

"I know how to spell banana ... I just don't know how to STOP spelling it ..."

Wagga Wagga is my favourite - sounds like drowning, woggawoggawoggawogga, which is funny cos it's inland. It would take an effort of will to drown there.

Don't Forget New Zealand!

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu Roller Derby!

And Wales....!

If we can get a team started here, we are in business:

llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

(p.s. I can pronounce this)

And Wales.

With Northern Ireland having Belfast Roller Derby, Wales is the only country in the United Kingdom with NO ROLLER DERBY. Did the miners strike for naught? Do I need to start writing a Welsh version of "A Modest Proposal?"

I'm sure Billy Bragg could write a heartfelt song about how the English have conspired to keep the Welsh from enjoying roller derby. John Cale and Tom Jones could sing it as a duet at the Cardiff Rollergirls' first bout.

Starting troubles in places I'll likely never visit. I can't help it, I'm half-Irish, half-Quebecois. Genetics has made me a drunkard who isn't fond of the English. Nothing personal.

Wales does have a team!!

Cardiff Dragon Dolls are recruiting and training now...

But thats south Wales, and as any good Cymraeg knows, the north is TOTALLY different.

Welsh Derby :)

There's also a team based in Machynlleth (Mid-Wales Roller derby) and a new team just setting up in Swansea (Swansea City Slayers). There's interest for a team in Wrexham and Bangor but I've not heard much more than that recently - though there's a new team in Shrewsbury (which is pretty much next to Wrexham).

We do need more teams across the green green grass of home though :D

I was so excited when I sent Hurt the Minnesota scores...

...because I also sent along our attendance, which broke our month old record of 4723 with 4991.

Hurt responded almost immediately with "Rat City got 5118."

So close, and yet so far away. It will be difficult to get any more people into the Roy Wilkins Auditorium (we turned away a couple hundred each night), but we'll give it a shot for the finals. After that, Key Arena has got the definite space advantage, and we ain't moving.

Congrats, Rat City!

Refreshing Change

Yet another reason to love MNRG. We're the only sports team in Minnesota that isn't begging the state to build us a new stadium.

Having said that, though, there are ways to increase the capacity at The Roy. Fortunately for me those kinds of decisions are way outside my responsibility.
