Clover Cup Tournament -- The hosting Dallas Derby Devils played a draining 5 games in two days to reach the championship bout of their two-day double-elimination Clover Cup tournament, but fell a little bit short of capping it with a win. After falling to the loser's bracket in a second-round loss, 134-70 to Atlanta, Dallas ended up having to play two extra bouts to reach the final, where they came a little closer in a rematch with Atlanta, but lost again 123-96.
Dallas had entered the tournament as the 2nd seed of 5 while Atlanta was the 3rd seed (seedings were based on official WFTDA South Central rankings at the time, leaving Tampa Bay as the 4 seed and Lincoln, NE's No Coast as the 5 seed.)
Atlanta went 3-0 on the weekend, playing two games on Saturday and one on Sunday, while Dallas went 3-2 (three games on Saturday, two on Sunday.) Tampa Bay finished third in the tournament by going 2-2, but their narrow defeat of higher-seeded Houston will likely result in TBDD gaining a few places on the official WFTDA rankings while Houston will slide.
Although Houston came in as the top seed of the five, their performance didn't bear out their seeding. They lost both of their games -- 141-54 to Dallas and 150-143 to Tampa Bay. No Coast also went 0-2, getting steamrolled by Atlanta 225-58 and losing a significantly closer one to Tampa Bay, 99-87. -- Justice Feelgood Marshall
Tournament recap from Phil Arnold
Montreal 129, Suburbia 54 -- In a Sunday morning bout in Yonkers, NY, Montreal finished off an undefeated three-game weekend by swamping Suburbia in an oddly paced game.
Montreal took a near-immediate big lead in this one. The first scoring jam saw Montreal bring the pack to a dead stop on a powerjam, allowing Ewan Wotarmy to easily race to a 20-0 lead that was never significantly threatened. About halfway through the first half, Montreal's lead had increased to 52-8, at which point Suburbia managed to make up a little ground while Montreal suffered from penalty problems. Suburbia's Dina Sore Jr. picked up a much-needed 13-0 that started a 21-0 run for the home team, making the score 52-29 with just under ten minutes to play.
Once Montreal worked through their box issues, though, it was lights out for Suburbia. Suburbia was shut out for the final 10 minutes of that half and the opening ten minutes of the second half, during which time Montreal piled up 46 unanswered points. With the score 98-29, it was just a matter of time from there.
Perhaps feeling the effect of a long weekend with a short roster (Montreal had only 11 players for all three bouts), Montreal opened up their jammer rotation a little bit in the second half, with primary jammer Georgia W. Tush mostly going in as a blocker and usual blockers Romeo and Cheese Grater taking a few more turns with the star. But Suburbia wasn't having much luck stopping any of them. With under three minutes left on the clock, Montreal was knocking on a triple-digit separation at 129-39, but Suburbia finished strong with 15 unanswered points over the last two jams to cut a little bit off of Montreal's margin of victory. -- Justice Feelgood Marshall

Nashville 199, Pikes Peak 124 – With a sold-out house for its second bout this season, Nashville proved to be victorious in their first match up against a team from the Western region, the Pikes Peak Derby Dames.
The bout was marked with several high scoring jams, often occurring for one team and then the other, back-to-back. Nashville repeated the scoring pattern seen in the Atlanta bout one month earlier by keeping the lead from the beginning of the night. The score was closest in the 8th jam of the night with only a 6 point difference between the two teams, but Nashville managed to continually widen the score gap. Nashville’s standout defensive player for the night was Britches N’ Hose. Pikes Peak’s captain, Count Smacula, provided the most trouble for Nashville’s jammers.
Each of the Nashville jammers came away from at least one jam with 20 or more points scored, with Ramb0 Samb0 scoring 24 points in the second to last jam of the night and Lady Fury coming in just behind that with a 23 point jam halfway through the second period. Slammylou Harris put up her 20 point jam towards the end of the first period. Lady Fury ran into some penalty trouble in the 8th jam of the second period and Pikes Peak jammer Pepper Slay took advantage of that by scoring 17 points, but it was too little too late by then. Nashville was sitting at a hefty 152 points to Pikes Peak’s 82 at that point.
Nashville scoring was led by Ramb0 Samb0 with 89 points and a +74 jammer point differential; Pikes Peak’s highest scoring jammer was Pepper Slay with 72 points and a +20 JPD. Nashville’s longer time in the penalty box did not provide an advantage for Pikes Peak; PPDD had 50 minors and 18 majors against Nashville’s 60 minors and 28 majors. -- Leann Lewis

Montreal 106, DC 56 -- Montreal won their third in a row -- and their second bout in two days -- with an impressive showing over DC, holding a double-digit lead for almost all of the bout and solidly closing the door in the final ten minutes.
As this one started off, it looked as if it might be a seesaw battle. For the first half or so, almost all jams were only a single pass, with jammers apparently having some trouble developing traction on a slippery floor. The teams traded the lead twice before DC went up 7-5 on the third jam and narrowly extended it to 16-8 about 10 minutes deep into the half. Montreal went on a run here that DC was never able to recover from, as jammer Georgia W. Tush started it off with a 10-0 and her team dropped 22 unanswered points.
Montreal held a 30-16 lead with just over ten minutes to play, and extended it to 19 points at 40-21 with 1:33 left to play. DC got a critical big jam from Dr. Skabs here, as MTL's Smack Daddy got boxed and gave her the opportunity for a 7-0. At the half, Montreal's lead was 40-28.
DC couldn't get it any closer than that, though. The second half saw a number of jams where Montreal demonstrated clear dominance of the single-jammer game, often putting on a successful trap on a single DC blocker to draw 20ft freedoms but also doing a much better job of taking the front and executing a controlled runaway when they were jammerless.
The knockout blow came with about 10 minutes left to play, as Montreal put on the trap in consecutive powerjams. A 12-0 for Iron Wench, followed by a 10-0 for Tush, turned a 76-52 Montreal lead to a 98-52 with 6:13 to play. Over the final 10 minutes, Montreal outscored DC 30-4. -- Justice Feelgood Marshall

Montreal 151, Connecticut 93 -- Friday March 5th saw CT Rollergirls' Stepford Sabotage take on the visiting Montreal Roller Derby's New Skids on the Block at the CT Sports Center in the first meeting between these two teams. Montreal jumped out to an early lead on a 9-0 jam from speedy jammer Iron Wench. Though Connecticut took a short-lived lead at 13-9 in the next two jams led by Eleanor Bruisevelt and Milla Lowlife, they would lose it in Jam #4 as Wench would shut out Pearl Jammer 15-0. Montreal held the lead for the rest of the bout. Strong defence by Montreal, led by No Holds Bard and Jess Bandit, shut out the Connecticut jammers for 6 consecutive jams at one point, and Montreal was up 78-40 by the half.
Connecticut seemed to come into the second half with more energy and began to toss around some huge hits, with Miz ConSepJen, Chelsea Grin and Girl Fawkes leaving their mark in more ways than one. Montreal's Nameless Whorror also got in on the action, landing some big hits of her own in her New Skids debut. At times, though, the Sabotage were reckless, and found themselves in penalty trouble. The second half saw the pace of the bout really pick up, as the teams decided to test one another's conditioning in what often seemed like a flat-out foot race. Sabotage skaters Black Cherry and Luciana Pulverotti put the pedal to the metal but Montreal's Cheese Grater and Lil' Mama were more than ready to the task.
A few good jams from Bruisevelt and Lowlife kept their fans involved, but the depth of the Montreal jammers lineup of Wench, Ewan Wotarmy, Smack Daddy and the very fancy Georgia W. Tush carried Montreal through to the end, leading Montreal to a 151-93 victory. -- Single Malt Scott

New Skids on the Highway
Very impressive wins this weekend for the Montreal team, especially when you consider how much time was spent on the road getting from city to city to skate.
Dallas
Congrats Atlanta! And wow Dallas, 5 games? You are much crazier than us!! Although 3 games, 21 hrs of driving, and 11 players still makes me feel pretty crazy.
WFTDA Record?
They also played the Texacutioners twice and Houston twice like a week before at Governors cup. That's 9 sanctioned bouts in two weeks, that's got to be a record? Also, props to ATL, Dallas just couldn't pull it together, can't wait to see the rematch when Miley Virus and Roxie Laroo are able to jam for us, hopefully that will make for a closer game! ;)
Wollongong-Illawarra?
Wollongong-Illawarra? OK, so that's it's derby name. What's the area's REAL name?
Wollongong
Is actually the name of our city believe it or not! The region of NSW that we are in is called the Illawarra, named after the big lake in the area I believe.
Much Derby love from the WIRDos! And thanks for the write up guys!
Weird? Nope, just WIRD
Like Wollongong is so much stranger as a name than Kalamazoo ...
Woy Woy Roller Derby (Woy Woy Derby Derby?) ... now that'll be weird.
(To forestall the next question, NSW stands for New South Wales. It's a state on the east coast and, to cut directly to what's important to non-Australians, is home to Bondi Beach.)
Yan Yean Roller Queens? And
Yan Yean Roller Queens?
And Wollongong isn't even in the top ten of awesome Australian place names... try Wolloomooloo, Mullumbimby, Japoonvale, Wee Waa, Maroochydore, Murwillumbah, Goondiwindi, or Queanbeyan.
Why does it sound like
Why does it sound like Australian towns, cities, regions were often named by people who were drunk at the time?
"I know how to spell banana
"I know how to spell banana ... I just don't know how to STOP spelling it ..."
Wagga Wagga is my favourite - sounds like drowning, woggawoggawoggawogga, which is funny cos it's inland. It would take an effort of will to drown there.
Don't Forget New Zealand!
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu Roller Derby!
And Wales....!
If we can get a team started here, we are in business:
llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
(p.s. I can pronounce this)
And Wales.
If we can get a team started here, we are in business:
With Northern Ireland having Belfast Roller Derby, Wales is the only country in the United Kingdom with NO ROLLER DERBY. Did the miners strike for naught? Do I need to start writing a Welsh version of "A Modest Proposal?"
I'm sure Billy Bragg could write a heartfelt song about how the English have conspired to keep the Welsh from enjoying roller derby. John Cale and Tom Jones could sing it as a duet at the Cardiff Rollergirls' first bout.

Starting troubles in places I'll likely never visit. I can't help it, I'm half-Irish, half-Quebecois. Genetics has made me a drunkard who isn't fond of the English. Nothing personal.
Wales does have a team!!
Cardiff Dragon Dolls are recruiting and training now...

But thats south Wales, and as any good Cymraeg knows, the north is TOTALLY different.

Welsh Derby :)
There's also a team based in Machynlleth (Mid-Wales Roller derby) and a new team just setting up in Swansea (Swansea City Slayers). There's interest for a team in Wrexham and Bangor but I've not heard much more than that recently - though there's a new team in Shrewsbury (which is pretty much next to Wrexham).
We do need more teams across the green green grass of home though :D

I was so excited when I sent Hurt the Minnesota scores...
...because I also sent along our attendance, which broke our month old record of 4723 with 4991.
Hurt responded almost immediately with "Rat City got 5118."
So close, and yet so far away. It will be difficult to get any more people into the Roy Wilkins Auditorium (we turned away a couple hundred each night), but we'll give it a shot for the finals. After that, Key Arena has got the definite space advantage, and we ain't moving.
Congrats, Rat City!
Refreshing Change
and we ain't moving.
Yet another reason to love MNRG. We're the only sports team in Minnesota that isn't begging the state to build us a new stadium.
Having said that, though, there are ways to increase the capacity at The Roy. Fortunately for me those kinds of decisions are way outside my responsibility.
