WFTDA Sanctioned
#1 Oly 170, #11 Madison 119 -- On Saturday night, Madison was able to stay in the game longer against defending WFTDA champs Oly than they had against Rat City on Friday, but they'd still go down to their second loss of the weekend, dropping this one by 51 points. For Oly, it was their 14th WFTDA-sanctioned victory in a row, inching them ever closer to Gotham's 2007-2009 record of 18 sanctioned wins in a row.
About 10 minutes into the bout, Madison narrowed a 27-14 deficit to just 3 points at 27-24 on the back of a 9-0 powerjam from Jewels of Denile followed by a 1-0 for Vicious Van Gogo, but Oly started opening up some daylight just as Madison was about to catch them. The Oly defense stepped up and held Madison to 13 more points to the end of the half while Oly's Atomatrix, Heffer, Femme Fatale and Tannibal Lector combined for 70, giving Oly a comfortable 94-37 lead at the half.
Comfortable though that lead may have been, though, Madison still outplayed Oly on the scoreboard throughout the second half, with Madison taking it 82-76 -- although all of that margin and more came on an enormous final jam for Madison, where Jewels of Denile used a powerjam to roll to a 20-0 that closed the bout. -- Justice Feelgood Marshall

#13 Detroit 189, #16 Steel City 144 -- Detroit wasted no time establishing a big lead in this high-scoring contest, as the second jam went by a huge margin of 25-0 to Detroit's Racer McChaser over Steel's The Crippler. Although Steel City answered with an 11-5 run over the next few jams, Detroit hit them with another huge jam at about the 20:00 mark, springing Cookie Rumble for a 20-0 and giving Detroit a considerable 50-11 advantage after just ten minutes.
For the third time in a row, Steel City strung together a series of small-margin wins, and then Detroit nailed them with a demoralizing big one that erased the inroads SCDD had made. After the 50-11 score, Steel City battled their way to within 30 at 63-33 with 12 minutes to play, but Cookie Rumble rolled for 18-0 to put Detroit up 81-33.
Steel didn't let it get out of control, though, going on a 33-16 run over the remainder of the half and leaving them in a tough but doable hole at 97-66 going into the half.
A second-half-opening 9-0 from Steel City's Snot Rocket Science got Steel City to their closest margin of the bout at 97-75, but Detroit struck back to open up daylight again with a 4-0 followed by a 16-0. With 19 minutes to play in the bout, Detroit was up 127-83 and then got Steel City with a 15-0 for Cookie Rumble that spelled the beginning of the end for visiting Steel City.
Detroit's lead grew as large as 75 points with about 8:30 to go at 181-106; while the last eight minutes of the bout went 38-8 for Steel City, the outcome was a foregone conclusion by that point. -- Justice Feelgood Marshall

#7 Rat City 175, #11 Madison 100 -- Madison took a big pounding in the first half of their first WFTDA-sanctioned action of 2010, falling into a 95-37 hole by the time the first 30 minutes were over, but played a somewhat more effective second half that ended 80-63 for Rat. Still, Rat City was never in serious danger as they rolled to their third straight victory in 2010 by a final of 75 points.
Madison could only stay within shouting distance for about the first ten minutes. They were still nominally in it at 36-9 Rat City with about 20 minutes to play in the first, but they got stuck at those 9 points for a lengthy stretch of deadly penalties on their jammers. That allowed Rat City to push the lead all the way to Rat City 71, Madison 9 before MRD got offense moving again. They did get a late-half explosion from jammer Jewels of Denile, who used a powerjam over Rat's Juliet Bravo to go 12-0 in a jam that nearly equalled MRD's total offense to that point -- it moved the score from 77-13 to 77-25.
From that point of the bout, things were quite a bit more even -- though Rat City was up by 64 points late in the first half, their final margin wasn't too much bigger at 75 points. -- Justice Feelgood Marshall

Montreal 208, Hammer City 26 -- The battle for Canadian supremacy was on at The Hangar in Toronto, Ontario, as the Hammer City Eh! Team hosted the New Skids on the Block from Montreal in their first WFTDA sanctioned bout against one another. These two teams do have some history together, enjoying a friendly rivalry and most recently having played each other in an unofficial bout on August 15th, 2009, which Montreal won 84-80.
Montreal and Hammer City were both anxious to have their rivalry settled and were pumped up. The New Skids jumped out to an early lead as jammers Iron Wench and Georgia W Tush went 4-0 against their Eh! Team counterparts Vicadoom and Carla Coma, and did not lose the lead for the rest of the bout. Montreal defense was led by Lil Mama and team captain Jess Bandit, and was very strong early on. Hammer City was kept off the scoreboard until the 9th jam, when HCRG’s Vicadoom shut out Smack Daddy 3-0 to make the score 44-3.
Penalties were a factor for Hammer City, especially evident in the 10th jam where Carla Coma was sent to the box -- giving Iron Wench a powerjam on which she capitalized to rack up 25 unanswered points and move the score to 69-3, aided by her pack effectively playing an isolation strategy. Montreal led 113-9 at the half.
Montreal did not let up in the second half, as all four jammers -- Wench, Tush, Smack Daddy and Lyn-Dah Kicks -- excelled, claiming lead jammer 14 times out of 18 second-half jams. Strong pack play by all of the Skids blockers, including Ewan Wotarmy, Trash n Smash, and Romeo were able to frustrate the Eh! Team.
Hammer City was never able to get any momentum going, and Montreal never took their foot off the gas, winning with a final score of 208-26. Georgia W Tush led Montreal jammers with 78 points; Vicadoom scored 17 for Hammer City. Both leagues will be sending teams to compete in the Beast of the East tournament in Montreal April 24-25 2010. -- Single Malt Scott
Fort Wayne 149, Bleeding Heartland 48 -- BHRG’s Flatliners and FWDG’s Bomb Squad closed the evening in a hard-hitting bout, with both teams fighting for their next big win. This bout featured jammer heavyweights: Kaka Kaliente and Terror d’Bits for BHRG’s Flatliners up against FWDG’s Bomb Squad jammers Pushycat and Majestic. The Bomb Squad established an early lead, with Bomb Squad jammers Pushycat and Majestic each scoring two grand slams in the first half. With 9 minutes left in the first half, the Bomb Squad led 58-12 and were up 74-23 by halftime.
During the second half, the Flatliners shook things up in the BHRG rotation, with Zero Dark and Unicoroner stepping onto the jammer line. The Bomb Squad brought out Dodger L. Bows to jam, who proved to be a force to be reckoned with, as she scored a grand slam for FWDG. The Flatliner packs, featuring the FWDG recognized MVP blocker Shock’n Roll and pivot Bombshell Shock, fought hard to get their jammers through; however the Bomb Squad remained in the lead and finished victorious, with a final score of 149-48 in favor of the Bomb Squad. -- Kung Furious

WHO LOVES DOUBLE-Ds???
I'll tell you what - they may have lost both bouts, but everyone back in Madison is still beaming with pride. A 51-point differential against Oly is pretty danged small, especially considering that three teams ranked higher than us lost by bigger margins. Add to that, the fact that we're in the middle of our home season & half of the DDs are new to the team this year...
In a word, MOO.
With much derby love for everyone & a strong personal bias for Madison,
MJJ
Nice work Madison
Agreed! When I saw the scores post up on DNN, I thought it was super rad. I was talking about it with some teammates earlier this week and we were all really proud of our neighbors. Nice work Madtown!
Photo galleries swapped
Regarding the photo links to Madison's bouts, Axel was at the Rat City bout, Bedykev (and Joe Rollerfan) was at Oly.
Montreal's on a roll
That's 5 sanctioned wins in a row for Montreal now. That's a decent winning streak.
Did this bout happen in Bizzarro World?
"Although Paper Valley Roller Girls Flyin’ Squirrels trailed host Rockford for a full 61 minutes,"
Or was it in Soviet Russia?
weird timing
I'm guessing whoever did the write-up was counting half time and times out for some reason.
The bout ends on the jam clock...
... not the period clock. Saucer was pointing out that Rockford held the lead until the last jam, and even through most of the last jam, which started with only a few seconds left on the period clock.
which of course makes perfect
which of course makes perfect sense
Montreal's 3 wins that weekend
Just want to point out - that while we only played one sanctioned bout that weekend, The New Skids on the Block actually won 3 in a row at the tournament. It was an exciting weekend in Canadian derby all-in-all.
There is a good recap right here: http://derbynerd.wordpress.com/2010/03/31/quad-city-chaos-recap/#comments
