MDC Kicks Off First Official Men's Season

NORTHHAMPTON, MA -- Two years after forming as a loose partnership between Northeast-area men's teams, the Men's Derby Coalition kicks off its first official season this Saturday with two bouts at the Men's Derby Conference III, hosted by the first co-ed league in the modern revival, Pioneer Valley Roller Derby. In a morning bout, Baltimore's Harm City Homicide takes on the Pioneer Valley Dirty Dozen in the fourth chapter in a long rivalry, while the evening bout finds the New York Shock Exchange -- still undefeated after three years of bouting -- taking on the first expansion team of the MDC, the Connecticut Death Quads.

Current MDC 2010 Season

March 27 - Harm City @ Pioneer Valley
March 27 - New York vs Connecticut
April 17 - Pioneer Valley @ New York
May 1 - Connecticut @ Pioneer Valley
June 12 - New York @ Harm City
July 17 - Connecticut @ Harm City
July 24 - New York @ Pioneer Valley
August 7 - Harm City @ Connecticut
August 14 - Pioneer Valley @ Harm City
Late October - MDC Championship @ Harm City
more dates still TBA

The upcoming MDC regular season stretches from March to September and is structured to have each of the four teams play one home bout and one away bout against each of the other three teams. The season will culminate in late October at a championship doubleheader hosted by Harm City Homicide in Hagerstown, MD, with the winner laying claim to the Athletic Cup trophy. All MDC bouts are played by the existing WFTDA ruleset.

For the MDC member leagues, the season represents a large organizational step forward; previously, all men's bouts had been essentially exhibitions, but for the first time, each of 2010's MDC bouts will count towards standings that will determine the championship-bout participants.

While logistical travel constraints have so far held MDC membership to the Northeast region, more and more men's teams are bouting publicly across the nation, raising the possibility of a wider MDC season expansion in 2011. Just in the last weekend, three men's teams have had public debuts -- Denver's Rollin' Bones defeated the Tucson Dry Heat Militia 136-134 in what was Denver's first bout, while St. Louis' Gatekeepers steamrolled Indianapolis' Race City Rebels by a final of 125-17. (Race City had technically debuted the previous weekend in a rare boys-against-girls bout against Flint City, where Race City brought on some members of their sister league Circle City in a 148-44 romp over women's league Flint City.)

A quickly-approaching event hosted by the Fort Wayne Derby Girls on May 8, the Spring Roll tournament, will soon provide the largest national meeting of men's teams to date. As the spiritual successor to the 2007 and 2008 FWDG Fall Brawl tournaments, the 2010 Spring Roll will again feature two tracks of tournament action, with a men's track bringing together six teams: Harm City Homicide, Dallas Deception, Race City Rebels, Twin City Terrors (St. Paul/Minneapolis), St. Louis Gatekeepers, and Puget Sound Derby Outcasts. The women's side brings in Detroit, Steel City, Fort Wayne, Naptown and Bleeding Heartland.

This weekend in Massachusetts, though, it's about the oldest and most experienced men's leagues gunning for position out of the gate in a short 6-game season.

MDC???

What's the over/under on the number of punk kids who'll stray into any bout that has "MDC" on the flyer because they thought they were going to see the band "Millions of Dead Cops?"

Too bad Roman numerals are now verboten as jersey numbers, as skaters could adopt the number "MDC" and force announcers to pronuonce it "sixteen hundred."

Swimmin' > Dead Cops

I don't know, growing up half a punk kid myself, MDC always meant "Metropoitan District Commission" - the big sign on the building next to the public pool in town. If the kids were going to the MDC, they were going swimming.

Oh, and Men's Derby Conference is good too. It's going to be a great weekend. Looking forward to meeting and skating with old friends and new teams.

Thank you

What MDC actually stands for...

Where I grew up, MDC meant Monroe Developmental Center. Some kind of state resource for the developmentally disabled. When my friend wore his MDC shirt to school, at least one teenage boy from outside the scene predictably teased him that the shirt must have meant that he was "special." Though I don't believe that was the exact word that was used.

As everyone from the 80s punk scene who bought the Mystic Records "The Sound of Hollywood #3: COPulation" knows, whenever a police officer notices your MDC shirt, you should inform him that MDC stands for "Millions of Defeated Communists."

Also

Also growing up a punk in the 80's, MDC indeed meant Millions of Dead Cops, and that's the first thing that came to mind when I read this haha. I even had the half cop half clan painted on my apartment bedroom wall.

Any chance of a video stream on this?

MDC video = maybe

Due to Internet considerations, this is one of those situations where I'm just not going to know until we're actually at the venue and testing. So ... check back Friday night, I hope to be able to confirm one way or another then.

Maybe for WFTDA leagues, but

Maybe for WFTDA leagues, but man derby is still renegade. There's no governing body, so they can pretty much number whatever they want...

Right?

I don't want to overstep my

I don't want to overstep my bounds here, but my belief is that MDC games are played by the latest WFTDA rules set (with feminine pronouns changed to masculine) so that means that the rule about the numbers is the same. So at MDC 3, at least, it doesn't seem as though someone could skate as "MDC."

Also, to say I'm pumped about this weekend would be a vast understatement.

However...

... it WOULD be totally legal to skate as MDC3. Yay loopholes!

Mens Derby

We play under WFTDA current rules. Always have and always will. Most of us ref under WFTDA rules for our female counterparts and will continue.
OSDA however has their own ruleset that they follow which is similar to the rules that the MDC plays by
Mens Derby isnt renegade at all it is just spread out all over the world so that we dont have a regular season ( until this year) for the members of the MDC to play underso the conference will help teams to gain members as well as teach them how to organize, run and schedule a bouting season for Mens Derby under the current WFTDA rules.

Death Quads!

And just because I like to share, Kenny Kamikaze and BenJammin will be making their derby debuts Saturday!

Ballz Out

Emotions couldn't be more at odds for Quad Almighty. I'll be missing Cincinnati Rollergirls' home-opener at the Gardens against San Diego this weekend. I'm guessing the refs won't miss me too much, but it will be hugely difficult for me to be away from the bench and away from my players during a big game. Give 'em hell, CRG! Eat the baby! KILL! KILL! KILL!

On the upside, I'll be gearing up for my first official Men's Derby Coalition rumble, side-by-side with my new Harm City brethren; and playing against a righteous gang of awesome PVRD fellas. Proud as f@#k to be skating with HCH, and I want to be a player my teammates can always count on. I'm so excited and nervous about it my stomach hurts and I can't concentrate on ANYTHING except skating laps.

Not too mention kickin' it with some old farts and Sith Lords on Sunday. Get off my lawn! We have cookies!

Man, I can't wait. But, damn, I'm gonna miss those women in Cincy. Derby do or die. Quad abides.

EAT THE BABY!!!

On behalf of the Manic Attackers, I say thank you for carrying on the tradition of working baby eatin' into your playbooks in Cincy. Now if only I could get some Skyline Chili for that baby...

Best of luck this weekend, boy-o's.

Sounds like fun!

Wish I could be there.

I wish we could be there...

I think one topic that needs to be addressed at Spring Roll is the prospect of MDC regions. Should we just mimic the WFTDA regions, or do something different? I'd really like it if we could have a short round-table on this matter at some point during the tournament, Justice. Speaking for my fellow GateKeepers, we would be all in for something like this.

you just never know...

... I may show up.

Dr. Johnny Capote

Not sure how people started calling us all singular

But the Terrors preface their name with Twin Cities, not Twin City. Minneapolis and St. Paul - kinda of a plural thing.

This might have something to do with it

Your Myspace page title. /jerk

Myspace?

Does anyone still use that? (Why did anyone in the first place?)

CONGRATULATIONS!

MDC, I love you for your season!!! I will be following every game, and hope to somehow make it out to your champs - this is so exciting! Please, derby gods, let there be broadcast! It will be amazing to see how you all develop in a regular season of games.

I'm hoping next year you'll be able to expand into a WMDC/EMDC (though I'm sure you'll find a more clever solution than that old horse) or that some Western teams will be able to afford to play in an MDC season! Or form their own DC and play MDC like the American League and National League?

No pun intended, srsly, but thanks for pioneering this exciting new model! Here's hoping derby is paying attention! -All my derby love, 4ever, Mercy Less, superfan

MDC3 Video

With or without coverage from DNN, there will be video available of most of MDC so long as the derby gods and goddesses continue to look favorably upon us.

Archives?

Do the derby gods and goddesses have plans to archive this video, so we mere mortals who have other derb-ligations tomorrow can watch?

but connecticut

Am I reading the schedule wrong? Why does Connecticut only play two games?

At the bottom of the schedule

At the bottom of the schedule it says "More dates still TBA."
It's still being worked out.

yup!

we'll get there! I think we actually have like 3 pending, so almost there!

HCH vs. PVRD

Word on the street is that there is more than pride and rankings at stake in the Harm City Homicide versus PVRD's Dirty Dozen bout. Can DNN confirm or refute any of these rumors?

The winner

of the bout between the Homicide and Dirty Dozen gets to shave the beard of of the loser. The 2 people involved in this are myself and Virginia Slim. We were trying to think of a way to make it a charity event to raise money but couldnt come up with anything on time. There is a possibility that it will be on DNN though.

It has to go, regardless of Bandit's opinion, at least for a while. :-)

Always happy to hook you up

I'm Going To Bed

Great weekend everyone. Time for rest.

Thank you

Amazing weekend...

(And now that Joe and Panzer are asleep, I'm going to rip all of the labels off of their canned goods. Shhh...)

Thanks much to PVRD for hosting and all the refs and staff and all the support shown for Mens Derby through out the weekend
