DC Takes on Dutchland & Harrisburg
LANCASTER, PA -- One week after a tough loss to Montreal at home, the DC Rollergirls hope to make their early case for a tournament invite as they tackle two other teams also on the bubble -- Lancaster, PA's Dutchland Rollers on Saturday and the Harrisburg Area Roller Derby on Sunday.
Last year, DC backed into Eastern Regionals -- only the top ten teams from the region got an invite, but #11th-ranked DC was able to enter with a #9 seed when higher-ranked Harrisburg and Maine declined their invites. Dutchland would have been the other team entering due to the dropouts, but also had to decline their invite -- that left the #10 slot open for Dominion.
This year, though, Montreal has scrambled the lower rungs with a strong showing last weekend. Currently, DC is ranked #9, Harrisburg #10, Connecticut #11 and Dutchland #12 -- but #13 Montreal will likely take them all down a notch in the upcoming 2nd quarter rankings, as they solidly defeated Connecticut on Friday (151-93) and DC on Saturday (106-56). Harrisburg and Dutchland thus have the opportunity to muscle their way into the top 10 this weekend, while DC would seriously bolster their chances for remaining there if they can win both games.
DC will be looking for their first win of 2010 -- in addition to the bout against Montreal, they lost to Steel City 157-69 in February.
Dutchland is looking strong in WFTDA play, having won their last 4 games dating back to June 2009 -- although they were all against fairly lowly-ranked competition in Long Island, Dominion, River City and Suburbia.
DC and Dutchland have met twice before, and both were extremely narrow wins for DC -- 63-62 in November 2007 and 90-83 in March 2009. From a triangulation standpoint, however, it's worth noting that Dutchland and Montreal both easily handled shared opponent Suburbia recently -- Dutchland won by 94 last month, while a shorthanded Montreal crew playing their third game in three days won by 66 last weekend. On paper, that might trump DC's 2-0 record against Dutchland.
Harrisburg is a particularly interesting question mark at the moment. Based on their record last year, they might be expected to dominate -- they blasted both DC and Montreal by over 100 points each, and even defeated increasingly impressive Steel City in a 178-175 shootout in June 2009. However, they've suffered significant roster losses since then, with much of their top talent heading to nearby leagues -- Renegade Raven and Nash Villain went to Dutchland while Holden Grudges and Dosa Badazz went to Charm City. With Harrisburg not having played a public sanctioned bout since that June 2009 one against Steel City, it remains to be seen if they still have the firepower to stay top-10 in the East.
All four teams -- Montreal, DC, Harrisburg and Dutchland -- will still have the opportunity to further make their cases before the tournament rankings come out in July, with multiple bouts against closely-ranked Eastern opponents, but this weekend should provide a chance for one league to take the early inside line in the scramble for Regionals.

Dutchie Dutchie now!
Yes! Lapcat had a brief retirement but came back in January and has been working hard to make attendance for this roster. We're thrilled to have her back! We are also really excited for Mara Jaded who appeared in her first All-Star game 2 weeks ago against Suburbia and totally killed it. Go Mara!
Personally, I'm sitting out of this game with an injury and although I'm pretty bummed about it, I'm really looking forward to seeing my Dutchies break that 2 year losing streak against DC!!! GO TEAM MEAT LOAF!
Just because Im bored
The boutcast says 6:45 am on Saturday but livecast says 6pm. Im only guessing that its 645 pm saturday?
start time
The bout announcements, intros, anthem are slated to start 6pm. The first whistle will blow no later than 6:30pm, though we're shooting for a few minutes sooner :)
Dutchland beat Harrisburg in October
Good to see Dutchland featured here. However ...
The piece says:
> With Harrisburg not having played a public bout since that June 2009 one against Steel City, it remains to be seen if they still have the firepower to stay top-10 in the East.
Uh, the first women's flat-track bout I ever went to was 10/10/09 at Dutchland. In that bout Dutchland beat Harrisburg rather easily 179-125. It was indeed a public bout.
Does that not "count"? The DNN scores database says the teams in that bout were "Dutchland A/B" and "Harrisburg A/B". Is that bout not considered because of the "A/B" or is the piece in error?
Josie's correct below
The nature of the sanctioned vs. non-sanctioned games can often make it a bit confusing when we're talking about a team's win-loss records and games. Generally speaking, DNN doesn't take WFTDA sanctioning into account *unless* we're specifically talking about games that will be affecting WFTDA rankings, as we were in this case.
You're right though, it would have been less confusing to just say "With Harrisburg not having played a sanctioned bout since that June 2009 one ... "
It wasn't sanctioned
You are correct, Dutchland hosted Harrisburg in October and won. However, the game wasn't WFTDA sanctioned as it was a mix of both leagues' A and B teams. I'm sure it counts as a public bout, but not for their WFTDA chartered team.
Either way, glad you made it to that game and hope to see you tomorrow!
you's gonna play roller derby down 'nere?
Go Dutchland!
If you aint Dutch, then you shore aint much!
Correction
Go Dutchland!
If you aint Dutch, then you shore aint much!
If you ain't Deutsch, then you shore ain't uh... meutsch?
Pennsylvania has scant few Dutchmen/Hollanders. At least since the 1600s, anyways.
Pennsylvania being "Dutch" is a myth. It's a corruption of the Germans' name for themselves, "Deutsch." English-American Pennsylvanians (who even then were clinging to guns and religion) heard the German immigrants refer to themselves as "Deutsch" and assumed it meant that they were Dutch.
One might suppose that during WW1 some of the Germans living in the area decided that correcting this mistaken perception of their heritage wasn't the brightest thing to do? One ex of mine's family anglicized its name from "Stoddart" to "Stoddard" in those times.

'Dutch' is correct
From Wikipedia:
In this context, the word "Dutch" does not refer to the people of the Netherlands. "Dutch" in this case is likely left over from an archaic sense of the English word "Dutch" (compare German Deutsch, Dutch Duits), which once referred to all people speaking a non-peripheral continental West Germanic language on the European mainland. Alternatively, some sources give the origin of "Dutch" in this case as a corruption or a "folk-rendering" of the Pennsylvania German endonym "Deitsch".
But the people living in Lancaster County already know this.
(and, FYI, the people in Europe you like to call "Dutch" actually prefer "Nederlander")
Congratulations!
Congratulations girls on your win with D.C. I couldn't stay and watch Blitz but I hope they fared as well!
And Mara Jaded and Lapcat, as well as the rest of the girls were exceptional!
