Dallas Hosts Clover Cup SC Tournament
DALLAS, TX -- Hot on the heels of the West's Wild West Showdown last week comes a smaller but more structured South Central tournament, as SC teams Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, No Coast and Tampa Bay get it on in double-elimination action.
The five-team structure will lead to a somewhat non-standard tournament, as the 2 seed Dallas takes on 4 seed Tampa Bay in a play-in round. That's followed by 3 seed Atlanta up against 5 seed No Coast. The winner of Dallas / Tampa Bay continues on to face top seed Houston. Teams that lose in these matches will drop down to a loser's bracket but will still have a chance to advance to the championship bout if they do not lose again.
Based on the events of the Governor's Cup two weekends ago, though, it would seem that Houston's 1 seed might not reflect the current reality. While Houston was narrowly victorious in their third-place bout of the SC Regional last year, Dallas schooled them twice at the Governor's Cup by significant finals of 174-64 (on Saturday) and 163-91 (on Sunday).
Atlanta, for their part, will be eager to erase the disappointing memory of the WFTDA South Central Regional they hosted last September; there, they hung with Dallas for most of their first-round matchup but were eliminated in the end, sending them to the consolation brackets early. However, like Houston, they also may have lost a step since that time -- they beat Nashville 118-66 then, but lost to the same team in Feburary, 108-73. They do, though, also have a blowout victory to their name this year in a 282-5 demolition of Derby City.
No Coast and Tampa Bay have both come up significantly short in all previous meetings with the Houston / Dallas / Atlanta clump, but if they should meet along the course of this tournament, it could be a particularly good one. Their meeting at 2009's SC Regional was a hot one, ending in an exciting 126-110 victory for Tampa Bay.
Clover Cup action on Saturday will have 5 games, with 3 bouts scheduled for Sunday.

Is DNN going to provide any coverage of this? It sounds awesome!
You're not the first to ask...
...unfortunately, with the amount of time and money we put into the WWS coverage, our budget for upcoming events, and the fact that we actually have to physically be elsewhere in the nation, we're just not able to hit this one as well. The time very well may come where we can provide or at least facilitate live coverage from every derby tournament, but we're just not there quite yet!
If anybody at the tournament has Internet access, please feel free to drop updates into the comments of this post over the course of the weekend.
A little elaboration
Covering events on back to back weekends in widely separated locations, while challenging, is certainly not beyond our capacity (as we demonstrated during last year's WFTDA Regionals grinder).
However, in order to cover an event, we have to actually be aware it exists. In the Clover Cup's case, we first learned of the event barely three weeks ago. Had we heard about it weeks or months earlier, we might well have arranged for the full DNN treatment -- it certainly seems likely that there are going to be some good bouts in Dallas this weekend! Somehow we just never got word.
We informally use this Google Calendar to keep track of what's when. If you have a major competitive event schedule that's not here, please let us know.

Game 1
Dallas derby devils vs Tampa tantrums
Tampa led for the first 15
Tampa led for the first 15 min of the 1st half but Dallas just took the lead with a 14 pt jam. D-22, T-14.
End of the 1st half
Dallas' defense shut down the Tampa jammer time and again allowing them to increase their lead. But a power jam for Tampa in the last jam of the half resulted in 14 pts for Tampa decreasing the deficit to only 3 points. D-53, T-50.
End of bout 1
After a penalty heavy 2nd half for Tampa and some great teamwork from Dallas, Dallas seals the win 144-74.
Did Dallas Beat Tampa?
Did the score get flipped on the DNN homepage? and some of the numbers changed? I'm confused.
I just did some digging
... and learned that the result I was sent was flopped. Fixing the status now. Dallas did win.

End of first half
Atlanta ends the first half with the lead 90-39.
Final score bout 2
Atlanta took advantage of numerous power jams to increase their lead and end the game 225-58.
Game 3 - Dallas vs. Houston
Was 125 - 8 Dallas at 19:25 in the 2nd. According to the ARD board posted above.

Game 4 Tampa vs No Coast
End of first half no coast leads 66-45.
Tampa chipping away at no
Tampa chipping away at no coast lead 81-72 with 7 min left in the game.
Final score
Tampa turned it on in the second half to claim a win. T-99, NC-87.
Amazing comeback.
Because if I passed 3rd grade math, they took the second half 53-20.
Game 5 Atlanta vs Dallas
The two teams played a tight game the first half with neither team pulling far ahead until an amazing last jam of the half by atlanta's merchant of menace. Score at the end of the half A-68, T-39.
Final score
Atlanta maintained their lead to beat Dallas 134-70.
Game 6 Tampa vs Houston
The first game of sun found Tampa taking a commanding 30 pt lead in the first part of the first half. However a couple of power plays for Houston allowed them to narrow the gap. The first half ended with a tie 78-78.
Final score
Crazy tight second half but Tampa prevailed to win the game 150-143. Next they will meet Dallas to decide who will meet DSDG in the champ bout.
Game 7 Dallas vs Tampa
Close game throughout the first half. Dallas leads Tampa with a 1 pt lead 45-44.
Final score
Dallas pulled away in the second half to take the game 137-79. They move on to play atlanta's dsdg for the title of clover cup champion.
Game 8 Atlanta vs Dallas
These two teams are bringing their a game forcing a low scoring tight game. Dallas leads the first half 57-50.

123-96 Atlanta wins
