Sunday
Jet City 329, Pacific 80 -- After an impressive though ultimately unsuccessful showing against Duke City on Saturday, Jet City proved that they're a team to watch by putting up the weekend's highest offensive total in a dismantling of Pacific. Endurance may have been an issue for Pacific, as it was their third bout in two days and their second of Sunday, while Jet had played just the one against Duke.
Regardless of that angle, Jet jumped all over them from the second jam, blasting Pacific with a 29-0 jam for Precious N. Metal -- notably, not a powerjam but still on the strength of a very slow pack brutalizing Pacific jammer Gunner's Daughter. It was a scenario that would play out over and over again, as Jet City proved themselves to be very adept at slowing the pack to a crawl with the opposing jammer still trapped inside while the Jet jammers used some phenomenal speed to race by distracted blockers.
From that point on, it was off to the races on the Jet City scoreboard, with their steadily increasing score getting a few spikes on more blowout jams like a 24-0 for Missus Unshine. The halftime lead was 121-41 for Jet City, and the second half would be a near mirror image at 118-39 (including another 29-0 Jet City jam, this one for Sierra Fist, immediately followed by a 23-0 for Precious N. Metal.)
#8 Rose City 118, #6 Philly 116 -- For the second time in the day, Philly played well enough to win but lost a thriller of a seesaw battle on the final jam. Rose City came out on fire in this one, up 36-4 after the opening ten minutes on the back of some deadly blocking from Smack Ya Sideways and jamming from Cadillac, and it was some time before Philly got their offense going. They were looking at a 47-16 deficit with most of the half gone before Philly jammer Elle Viento got to go against a sparse pack and pick up a much-needed 14-0. That got the score to 48-30 favoring Rose with about ten minutes to play, and Philly kept it even for the remainder of the half to end it behind by 16 points at 65-49.
Philly once again looked to be in danger of falling out of contention when the second half started with a 23-3 run for Rose City, but again stopped the damage just when it is was almost too serious to rectify. They narrowed that 88-52 gap down to 95-80 with about 15 minutes to play -- at which point they'd lose blocker Summer Assault, ejected for an egregious low block -- and finally took the lead for the first time with about nine minutes left on the clock at 110-102.
After the quick 2-0 for Persephone that followed, Philly had completed a 60-14 run over the middle of the half -- but unfortunately for them, the tide turned slowly but inexorably in Rose City's favor. The next jams were all very narrow margins -- 4-2 Rose, 2-0 Philly, 4-0 Rose, 4-0 Rose -- and the crowd was getting increasingly frantic with the score 116-114 favoring Philly and only about 2 minutes to play.
Philly got what looked like it was going to be a huge lead jam call for Shenita Stretcher at that point, but her opposing jammer Blood Clottia forced a quick 0-0 call-off by catching and passing her before she could reach the pack. On the next jam, Rose got the lead jam call they desperately needed as Licker 'n' Split took 2 points before a timely call -- leaving the game tied at 116.
There were 33 seconds left on the clock after a Philly timeout here, and the final jammer matchup was Elle Viento for Philly against Scratcher In the Eye for Rose City against 3-3 packs. That lead call went to Scratcher while Elle was solidly caught up in a Rose City wall of Smack Ya Sideways, Mick U Cry and Wreck Deckard. Period expired as Scratcher approached the pack, and she wasted little time after passing two, calling mid-pack to seal a 118-116 win for Rose City and set off a huge Portland dogpile in the middle of the track.
The loss leaves Philly on an extremely uncharacteristic 4-game losing streak, all to teams from the West -- Rocky Mountain, Oly, Rat City and Rose City.
Emerald City 141, Bellingham 133 -- This one was back and forth for the whole first half and seemed to have a considerably higher-than-average number of powerjams. Both teams opened up early leads of just over 10 points each before surrendering them not too much later, although it was Emerald with the advantage for most of the clock time. With 10 minutes left in the half, Emerald had the biggest lead of the game at a modest 15 points, 49-34 -- helped out a little by significantly more jammer penalties on Bellingham. Even with Bellingham having so much trouble keeping their jammers on the track, it was still a 10 point game at the half, 61-51 for Emerald.
Scoring was significantly higher for both teams in their second half, and although the lead changed a few more times, the final margin ended up being pretty close to the halftime margin. Bellingham grabbed a one-point lead about 5 minutes into the half at 69-68, following that up with a 15-0 for Bellingham jammer Gladeye Ater having some easy go-arounds with nearly all of Emerald stuck in or heading to the penalty box.
The 84-68 score was Bellingham's largest, but it was immediately reduced back to 1 point by a 15-0 answer from Emerald's Bullet Brains. That kicked off a 44-0 run for Emerald, again mostly on the backs of powerjams. By the 15 minute mark, Emerald had a 28 point lead at 112-84.
Bellingham didn't look like they were going to be able to close the gap to single digits, as the margin hovered around 20 for almost the rest of the bout -- but they came achingly close in the final moments. With 3 minutes to play and the score 132-117 for Emerald, Bellingham got a break when their jammer Dixy DethDir scored a 13-10 while Emerald suffered the ongoing jammer-penalty bug at the worst possible moment. The last jam started at Emerald 141, Bellingham 130 and Bellingham's jammer Gladeye Ater unopposed -- but she could only get 3 before deciding to call off the jam as Emerald jammer Rex Havoc was about to start a scoring pass.
Sacred City 141, Pikes Peak 121 -- Sacred City bounced back from a rough loss at the hands of Duke City on Saturday night to handle a Pikes Peak team that trailed for nearly the entire bout but never quite went away. Sacred took the lead on the third jam as Daddy's Girl jammed her way to a 13-zip win and make it 16-10. Sacred did not lose that lead in the first half, although it was often single digits and Pikes tied it at 35 with about 10 minutes left to play. When first-half time expired, Sacred had opened up a little bit of daylight with a 67-49 lead.
Through the opening ten minutes of the second half, it looked as if Sacred was going to put PPDD away, rattling off a 27-5 run that created a 94-54 Sacred lead. Pikes appeared to be mostly conceding the front to Sacred to focus on catching the opposing jammer in the back, but it didn't seem to be working out for them so well in that stretch. Regardless, PPDD got handed a break when their jammer Kamilla Bloodspilla took a 4-0 and the next jam started with a 5-2 advantage for Pikes.
The resultant 14-0 for Count Smacula got Pikes back in a game that had almost gotten away from them, 94-72 with 18:40 left to play.
But that was fairly shortlived. Sacred slowly added 11 points to their total, bringing the score to what was still an manageable 105-73 with 14 minutes to play, but then very quickly added the knockout punch. A 4-2 pack advantage and powerjam for Sacred let Cash Money roll up an 18-4 jam over Smacula. This left Pikes looking up from a 50 point hole at 123-77 with 11:47 left to play -- and though Pikes did finish the bout with 28 unanswered points in the final two jams, Sacred was never again in serious danger of losing the lead.
#5 Rocky Mountain 195, #15 Bay Area 17 -- A Bay Area team clearly sorely missing some of their primary jammers went down to their second blowout loss of the weekend, only able to muster single digit totals in each half against the overwhelming force of Rocky Mountain. Bay was without the services of jammers Burly Bot, Jane Hammer and Brawllen Angel, along with those of blocker Velveteen Savage Chantilly Mace, Nock Nock, Astronaughty and Ivy Prophane picked up most of the jam duties, but it was only 9 points in the first half and 8 in the second for Bay Area. RMRG denied scoring again and again both with effective defense and well-timed deployment of jam calls, often ending the action just an instant before a Bay jammer was about to steal her first point.
#9 Rat City 128, #6 Philly 123 -- Rat City took this win from Philly in the final jam, getting revenge for Philly's whomping them by a final of 123-35 last June. While Rat City leapt out to a surprising 25-2 lead after a huge 19-0 for Juliet Bravo over Mo Pain, Philly responded to that with a demoralizing 50-1 run that gave them a 52-26 lead about halfway through the opening 30. A wise timeout for Rat City here turned the tide a little, and at the half Rat City had closed the gap to 66-51.
For the first 15 minutes of the second half, Rat City was hovering about 10 to 20 points behind Philly, but an enormous 25 point powerjam for Carmen Getsome behind a fully dominant Rat pack finally gave Rat City back the lead at 100-89 with 14:11 left to play.
That started a series of lead changes to close the bout. Rat's lead at 14:11 only lasted a couple of jams. Once again, a jammer penalty was the critical element in a big swing -- this time it was Philly's Persephone rushing to a 14-0 that gave Philly a 104-102 lead with about ten minutes left to play. Two jams after that, ubiquitous Carmen Getsome was back to take an 11-2 that moved the score to 113-109 Rat City with 7 to play.
The 113-109 score stood through three scoreless jams and inched a bit forward to 117-109 Rat City with 2:56 to play -- and that led to a frantic last two jams. Teflon Donna took advantage of a controversial box trip for Carmen Getsome to drop a 14-0, making it 123-119 Philly with 33 seconds on the period clock. Unfortunately for Philly, they'd lose their jammer Gloria Grindem to the box on that final jam, making it much easier for Rat City to erase that 4 point gap. Juliet Bravo took 9-0 there for insurance, and Rat won a thriller by 5.
Pacific 134, Sin City 116 -- This bout between the fairly new Pacific crew and the more experienced but recently less active Las Vegas girls proved to be fairly equally matched nearly all the way through. Pacific held the lead for most of the first half, but it never got more than a jam's worth of points, and Sin City took over the lead for the first time at 38-36 at about the ten-minute mark.
Two big second half powerjams resulted in two lead changes over the remainder of the half -- Pacific's Mercy jammed her way to a 14-0 over an extremely sparse Sin City pack to give Pacific a 60-47 lead with 7:06 left, but the the situation was mirrored on the half's last jam when Pacific's box was filled to entirety and Sin City's Shirley Demise pulled a 15-0. At the half, Sin City was holding a tenuous 75-68 lead.
A 79-79 tie early in the second half lasted through a few jams and lengthy official timeout, but Pacific couldn't break back in front ... yet. Sin City could not make their lead any more than 10 points before Pacific tied it up yet again at 97-97 with just under 12 minutes to play. They had their best run of the bout just in time there, as a 25-5 total over the next series of jams put Pacific up by the largest margin of the bout at 122-108 with just under five minutes to play.
Sin tried to make a final run, scoring 8 unanswered points to make it 128-116 with a minute left on the clock and give them a solid shot at a last-jam win. But a lead jammer call for Pacific's Collideascope sealed the first WFTDA-sanctioned victory for the Hawaii team, and she'd add 6 more points before the call.
Arizona 138, Lava City 137 -- Arizona led all through the first half in this one, but Lava City stayed right on their tail for the duration of the opening 30, helped particularly by some smart and effective jamming from their apparent ace Joyride. The AZRD lead didn't get any bigger than 25-12 with about 17:30 left in the half, and most of the rest of the half was Lava crawling back towards them with narrow-margin wins.
Arizona had a 42-31 lead with 11 minutes to go in the half, but Lava made it 42-40 with 7:30 to play. Arizona got a big jam just in time, as Rayna Rage pulled a 13-0. The daylight she'd given her team lasted till halftime, and AZRD held a 68-56 lead at the break.
Lava City almost fell out of contention as the second half started, falling behind 82-58 after three jams and down by 32 points at 130-98 with 13 left to play.
They made the end a thriller, though, nearly erasing a 30 point lead with 4:31 left with the help of a unfortunate penalty avalanche for Arizona. Screamin' Meanie picked up 14-0 on a powerjam, literally scoring the last 4 at the last possible second. On the following jam, Arizona jammer Gratuitous Violet got boxed and Lava City's Joyride scooped up a 5-0. With a timeout and Violet still in the box, Lava had a shot with the score 135-124 and just under a minute on the period clock. Screamin' Meanie picked up lead and 13 points in her jam, but Violet got 3 points out of the box ... exactly how many Arizona needed to hang on the lead, and AZRD escaped with a dramatic 1 point win.

Comments
Wow!
Sounds like a more intense bout than many would have imagined between Oly and Rose. Wish I could have seen it! Nice job to both teams!
Oly and Rose was indeed a hell of a bout
It's a bit puzzling that people are surprised by this, though, given that last March the Oly/Rose score was a very similar 157 - 151, and Rose approached this bout with unparalleled determination.
Best to all. Can't wait for more WWS action today.
Why people might be surprised.

A lot has happened since last March.
Rose City was eliminated at the western regional by a team that Oly went on to beat there by almost a 2-1 margin.
Femme Fatale Expulsion
Couldn't help but notice that it wasn't mentioned that Femme Fatale was expelled just before the half for intentional tripping. The move she pulled to earn this was very blatant and obviously well practiced. It's a shame that some of the Oly players feel the need to pull things like that when its clear that those girls don't NEED to do those things to win. They are great skaters and deserve their title. I look forward to next time these teams meet!
femme fatale intentional tripping
that's not the first or the last time she'll be expelled for that. this is a favorite move of hers and has been for the last4 or so years. teams beware.
Another Great Skater and how the West is kicking BUTT!
I am not going to defend what happen. It was the right call. But Femme just had a beautiful child recently and she was out there, out-skating most. Old habits were still evident, but she is hands down one of the very best skaters who just came back from a 10 month working vacation from derby to kick ass with Oly.
Way to go girl.
Oh by the way Oly is still UNDEFEATED. And the Rose, Rat, Oly, Rocky Mt of the West just put a whooping down to start 2010.
Power Rankings are going to be interesting.
it was great
such a well played game by all....got to see SC vs. CC and Oly vs. Rose...what a treat....sad i missed the rat game though....
thank you Blaze streaming...DNN.....and fastgirlskates.com

Amazing rivalry. Amazing bout! Wow wow wow.
archived footage
Sorry if this has already been covered, but will there be archived footage from this tourney?
yes, i'd also love to know.

A few personal, less formal observations...
1. This was a great event, quite well presented by Slaughter County. It stayed almost perfectly on schedule the entire time, and the venue was almost perfect for the size (I say "almost" because of the pretty common problem of overlapping whistles from one track being audible on the other. Definitely saw a few jams where half the skaters in the pack thought a jam was over while the other half kept going full blast.) But that aside, the layout worked pretty well...
2. ... except for the fact that sitting in a location where you're trying to follow action on both tracks, while attempting to write a recap of a game you previously watched, while looking at the archived boutcast from a FOURTH bout earlier in the day, is not something the human brain was designed to do. Next time I think I will probably try and not do 21 overlapping recaps by myself. That being said, I will take this moment to thank our awesome DNN boutcasters, whose detailed commentary made it possible to reconstruct the action I just couldn't physically see or fully focus on.
3. Seeing a jammer matchup of Kamikaze Kim for Rat City vs. Miss Fortune for Philly was extraordinarily weird on many levels.
4. I tried to do it in the recap, but I really have no words to describe how much fun it is to watch Slaughter County's On 'Da Sligh skate. Her balance and speed control are literally unbelievable -- one of my favorite games of the weekend was a 138-point blowout (Tucson over Slaughter County) just because of some of the crazy moves she was pulling. A couple of other Western skaters that'd I never seen play that really jumped out at me were Joyride (Lava City) and Shadow Soldier (Sacred). A few skaters I've seen before who were even more impressive than I recall them previously being -- Amanda Jamitinya (Duke), Tannibal Lector (Oly) and Carmen Getsome (Rat City) ... all of them had genuinely phenomenal weekends.
5. Speaking of great skating -- it was hugely awesome to get to play in the three co-ed challenge bouts that happened on Track 3 on Sunday. Blocking for Angela Death! Blocking with Anya Heels! Jamming against Quadzilla! Missing a block on the aforementioned On 'Da Sligh by a mile and subsequently flying 20 feet off the track like a chump! There is NOTHING more fun than getting to play against the best. Nothing. No, not even that.

We're so proud!! Thanks Justice! We had an amazing weekend and felt the love from all over. Thank you to everyone who's been so supportive of the 'Rad (DNN, WTFDA, Vagine Regime, WICKED)! We made some epic new friends in Val Capone, Angela Death, Carson B Demented and the Hawaii Pacific Derby ladies (quite possibly the huggiest girls in all of derby). We heart all your faces and can't wait 'till ECE!

...I detect a story.
Thursday winners?
That's right. Some of us started partying Thursday night. I think you should have to pick a winner from that party. My vote goes to the neon-painted duo of B-Train and Amanda Jamitinya.
afterparty
No doubt Shenita was the winner on Sunday night after a stunning pole dance-off with Justice. It seems these afterparties bring out a natural rivalry between Justice and Shenita (I am remembering the punching bag contest in Chicago). It is quite a beautiful thing to watch. Big props to my girl Shenita...

Props to Philly
I said it in the boutcast comments, and I'll say it again -- Philly deserves huge credit for traveling across the country right into the lion's den. They played three tough teams in a row, and two of the bouts went right down to the final jam. (Seriously, what is it with Philly and nailbiters?)
the east region made a secret
the east region made a secret pact to give the spectators heart attacks every game.
jk.
always give good bout
Philly may not always win, but they never fail to bring it. After all the cancelled practices in the past month and crazy travel issues all due to snow, the Belles were great to watch.
Nailbiters
More nailbiters, more nailbiters! They are great for the sport. I went to the Philly-Rocky Mountain game at nationals and even though I was disappointed by the outcome, I found the experience to be exhilarating -- Philly's sustained second half comeback, the chase in the final jam in regulation, the OT jam -- awesome! The hometown crowd was really into it, fans feeding off each other's enthusiasm.
picture number 10
The Philly Pivot is Elle Viento (22), not Gloria Grindem, who is blocking Cadillac from Rose City. But, as usual, excellent shots Axle!
thanks slaughter county!
philly had a great time this weekend - so much fun to be at a derby-filled weekend without being the hosts. =)
anyway, i've been trying to process all that we learned this weekend + i know that i've returned to the east with a renewed sense of excitement + an eagerness to get to work. we came to this tourney knowing that it was very early in the season for us (we normally start our travel season officially at the ECDX) so we could learn these lessons NOW to apply them for tourney season.
the west has a lot of great derby + the fast, exciting, hard-hitting, SMART play was great to be part of.
so, thanks again!! we're happy to provide the nailbiters as these close games are what we love to play + the fans seem to enjoy watching.
