WFTDA Preview: Providence @ #10 Boston

BOSTON, MA -- For their 2010 season opener, the Boston Derby Dames will host long time sister league Providence Roller Derby when the Massacre takes on the Riveters at Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington on Saturday, February 27th. With the exception of the return of the the ever-speedy Bunnicula, back from a long hiatus from skating, Providence’s 2010 roster is virtually identical to last year’s team.

"We retained more skaters from last season on our current roster than ever before, which is very exciting for a team that would basically start from scratch from year to year,” said Riveters captain Sass E. McNasty.

The Massacre is coming back from an amazing and challenging 2009 season, including a punishing 19-game season and the team’s first trip to Nationals in November. Though the team retained pack forces such as Shelby Shattered, Lois Carmen Dominator and Maura Buse, they enter the 2010 season without the blocking services of Etta Maims and Pussy Venom. They’re also down Krush Puppy, a top Massacre jammer, who is currently on hiatus.

Expect the majority of the jamming slack to be picked up by long-time Massacre vets Claire D. Way and Sugar Hits.  Mrs, Dash and new additions Killary Clinton and Lil’ Paine are sure to pick up some jamming duties too.

Craisy Dukes will most likely be seen on the track a lot this bout as she is incredibly valuable to the Riveters as both a jammer and a blocker. Also to be seen on the jammer line is long-time PRD vet Baby Fighterfly and the long-legged Rhode Kill, while Shelby Bruisin’, captain Sass E. McNasty and Trophy Knife are sure to cause trouble in the pack for the Massacre jammers throughout the bout.

The Riveters went 5-4 last year while the Massacre saw a 10-9 season. The last bout the Riveters played was at Eastern Regionals, when they beat Connecticut by a solid 57 points. The Massacre’s last bout was against the Texecutioners at Nationals. Texas beat the Massacre by 39 points and went on to earn 2nd place in the tournament after losing to the Oly Rollers in the finals.

The Boston Derby Dames were created in 2005 with help from Sarah Doom, who helped in founding Providence Roller Derby a year prior. In the first year of BDD’s inception, the two teams shared practice space and Boston’s first bout was against Providence in 2006 (Providence won). Several skaters from both teams have even taken the track together as New England Roller Derby (NERD). Although the two teams scrimmage a handful of times every year, this bout will mark the first time they have formally bouted against one another since 2006. If you are a fan of Roller Derby in New England, chances are you’re a bit torn about who to root for.

The Massacre’s next bout will be against the Carolina Rollergirls on March 20th at the Shriners Auditorium. The Riveters next bout will be April 18th against the visiting London Rollergirls at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence.

This is going to be a love fest. I'm so excited for this bout as well as the home team season opener. I'm pretty sure we'll all be doing our bout day jobs after our game and secretly reading the Philly/Oly boutcast at the same time. Holy crap Saturday is going to be good.

2006?

Definitely looking forward to this game. Should be a lot of fun.

I could be wrong, but my recollection of the previous Providence/Boston bout puts it in September of 2005. I'll have to dig through my pile of old bout programs...

Thank you
