WFTDA Preview: Montreal @ Tucson & Arizona

TUCSON, AZ -- A week after hosting Charm City at home, the ladies of Montreal take a trip deep into the American southwest to take on two of the oldest teams in modern derby, Tucson and Arizona. While both bouts will be WFTDA sanctioned, Saturday night's Tucson / Montreal game is open to the public while Sunday's Arizona / Montreal clash is not.

For Montreal, it's the second leg of a very busy start to their season, following their 159-57 loss to Charm City last weekend. Two weeks after this trip, they'll be taking an East Coast swing that'll put them up against Suburbia, DC and Connecticut on consecutive nights.

The Montreal roster is slightly altered from the 14 they put up against Charm City. They'll be without zippy, slippery jammer Iron Wench, who tied with Georgia W. Tush for the points lead against CCRG, and also without tough blocker Trash 'n' Smash, deemed by border authorities to be too dangerous to enter the country. Smack Daddy is another travel team mainstay who won't be making the trip. In their places, though, Montreal gets back jammer / blockers No Holds Bard and Wrath Poutine, along with Beals on Wheels.

As the second and third modern derby leagues to form in the wake of the Texas Rollergirls, both Arizona and Tucson have a lot of derby history behind them, but both teams have experienced a lot of turnover since their early days and aren't quite the national forces they were in the early days of the sport.

Tucson hosted and finished second in both 2006 and 2007's Dust Devil tournaments, but was knocked out early in the 2008 and 2009 Western Regional tournaments. In 2009, they went 2-4 on the year with wins over Arizona and Pikes Peak.

This year, they've got one game under their belts, narrowly defeating Pikes Peak again 135-127 on January 30th -- a much closer bout than their 185-91 spanking of PPDD at Regionals. Tucson still has a few extremely experienced players on their roster, notably Deadlock Doe Holliday and Helen Wheels, and they've got a considerable all-around threat in Sami Automatic.

Arizona finished third in the 2006 Dust Devil and barely missed the 2007 Nationals when they were surprised in the 2007 Western Regional by eventual 2007 champs Kansas City, but they haven't had much success since then. They've had no WFTDA sanctioned action in the last 10 months -- their last WFTDA bout was a 95-82 defeat of Sin City in April 2009. Previous to that, they'd dropped 8 in a row going all the way back to May 2008, and have missed the Western Regionals in both 2008 and 2009. (They did, however, pick up a non-WFTDA win against OC, 112-64, in June 2009.)

Given Arizona's relative quiet in the last year, this roster is something of a question mark, split about evenly between established vets and relatively new additions. Deez Nutz and Rayna Rage are experienced tough blockers, and Gratuitous Violet, little sister of Gotham star Fisti Cuffs, has proven herself to be a resilient jammer in previous action.

Cheese Grater 289 // Lady J 86 // Georgia W. Tush 40oz // No Holds Bard 2x4 // Karla Shnikov AK47 // Jess Bandit 8 // Beals on Wheels 89 // Wrath Poutine 30 // Ewan Wotarmy 7734 // Rae Volver 38 // Lyn-dah Kicks 75 // Lil Mama 1/2 // Beater Pan-Tease 1-976

Bianka Trohl 11 // Deadlock Doe Holliday 333 // Helen Wheels 67 // Kamanda 242 // Metal Maiden 1980 // Myna N. Possession 18 // Nokka Ho Down 187 // Pinky McLovin 3 / Pixie Axe 33 // Polly Graf 7 // Sami Automatic 22 // Sassy Sue 62 // Sunni Sideup 217 // Venus Dynamite 29

Give them Hell ladies!

Good Luck Skids!

Actually

Actually Justice, Venus Dynamite has never been a jammer for TRD??

Hmm

I thought I remembered her as a jammer from Four Corner Feud ... I guess that in the intervening year I got her mixed up with another derby Venus or Dynamite. Sorry about that!

Rum Bunctious?

For my beloved Tent City Terrors, you forgot to mention Rum Bunctious, #R (sister of Rum Noxious).

Yeah, things have been a bit slow for the TCT's lately, but the roster is strong now, and with some Terrors in Training waiting in the wings it's only going to get better. In the next year or so, get used to seeing black, white, and pink at nationals...and perhaps one loud, fat guy dressed in an inmate costume and pink feather boa!

Oh, PS, couple other minor corrections...Hack's number is 2PCS, Jules' number is 010, and Luna's number is 10/6

Not any more.

Not any more, check the 12/1/09 WFTDA rules revision.

"3.7.4.4 A player’s number must be alphanumeric with at least one numerical digit.
For example: L5 is an acceptable number, but LV is not. Numbers cannot
contain symbols."

So Rum Bunctious has likely had to change her number as well. At least if she's skating on the travel team.

yeah I found that out, too.

yeah I found that out, too. Wow, what a bad rule. I love roller derby, but that doesn't mean I love everything about it. Put this new numbering rule toward the top of the list of things I don't like about the derby. (Irrelevant side tirade, the fact that so many rules are added and changed from year-to-year is also on my list of things I dislike about derby, but that's beside the point)

Anyway...Blah.

Oh, FYI yes Rum did indeed skate, with the number of "pir8"

Justice, thanks for the

Justice, thanks for the preview! We are really excited to host the New Skids....Whiskey Mick called it "Saguaros versus Maple leaves" on our website.

GOOD LUCK SKIDDOS!

Paint the track neon my lovlies :D

THAT would be cool! :)

THAT would be cool! :)

* Sigh *

I can't help but call attention to the fact that, had this MTLRD vs AZRD bout taken place 6 months ago, it would have pit identical twins against one another in the ultimate battle for zygote victory!

But, alas, I have left my beloved New Skids for a piece of hipster pie in Portland, OR, while my twinny sis and former Tent City Terror Diana Saurus Wrexx has gone to the Southern Hemisphere and is probably engaged in some wacky New Zealand sport on a terrifyingly huge mountain at the moment.

Someday, though, I know it will happen. And it will be just... like... this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XY3dxb5OpIw

Best of luck, you wonderful Skids! Have a blast, everyone!

Make me proud

Go Skids! Hang Tough! xo

is this

game going to be On DNN tonight?

I was starting to wonder

I was starting to wonder myself. I thought it was supposed to start about a half hour ago?

no news.

We were contacted a few days ago by Tucson about streaming video from this bout, and the last I heard they thought they were gonna make it happen, but we haven't heard anything since (including where the stream might be found).

Ok

Thanks Hurt! Im getting tweets from Pitchit for updates. GO SKIDS!!

AZRD NSOTB

I will update todays bout on Twitter, Facebook et al.

Congrats TRD

Congrats TRD on your win!

Good luck to AZRD today. They really need this one. It did rain overnight and Casey's is an outdoor venue. Hopefully things will stay dry. As of 8:31 AM here in Downtown Phoenix, I am seeing some clear skies break through but it's still still pretty black skies over northeast Phoenix where Casey's is. But the day is still young and as long as it does not rain anymore today, the track should be dry in time for this one.

with derby love...

Raining in Downtown Phoenix

A fresh rain has just dropped over Downtown Phoenix area where I am at. I am not sure about the venue, which is about 15 miles from here. Hopefully they can get the track dry so they can get this one in. Good luck ladies.. SKATE HARD ~ SKATE SAFE ~ DERBY LOVE!!!

=m

11:12 - skies are breaking to the west - may go off after all!!! hope so!!!!

Montreal / Arizona final

Looks like the game did indeed happen -- Pitchit reports a Montreal 187, Arizona 83 final. Details on Monday.

YAY

Wooooooooooooohooooo!

SKIDS, SKIDS, SKIDS, SKIDS!

Unless there were post-bout

Unless there were post-bout adjustments to the score which I'm not aware of (which often happens in our sport) the final was 188-83. But, whatever it was, suffice to say that Montreal won convincingly.

Yeah, both the time and the venue were moved last-minute, but it did indeed happen. The weather forced us inside. Never heard why the time was moved up two hours.

I ad the honor and privilege of working as the clock monkey for Montreal's penalty box. I was privy to some bench chatter. Montreal is very intense, yet still has a lot of fun playing the game.

Even though my beloved TCT's lost, I still had a blast.

Thanks to Montreal for coming down and bouting with us!

I would agree

that Montreal seems to strike a great balance between taking the game seriously and still remembering to have fun no matter what.

Enemy territory fans in both Tucson and Phoenix seemed to fall in love with them like they were their own.

Aww shucks

Thanks azrd and trd for hosting us!! We had such a blast! No thanks to Arizona weather for raining the whole time. We wanted sun damnit!!!!!

I blame NSOTB...

...for the weather! It was sunny before you ladies showed up, and it is again sunny after you left. I think the NSOTB brought the rain with them.

:)
