Weekly Rollup and Open Thread, 2/12/2010
If you've been putting off taking the WFTDA survey (not that anybody in roller derby has ever been known to procrastinate or anything), hit it up this weekend ... the survey closes on Monday has been extended through the end of February.
Some of you might remember a story from a few months ago about LeBrawl James, a player from Burning River Roller Girls who chose to retire from derby in order to donate her kidney to her boyfriend. Here's an update on the story ... just in time for Valentine's Day.
This in from Rogzilla: "In the latest episode (#105) of Kevin Smith's podcast, Smith declares Whip It to be his favorite movie of 2009, and his producer Scott Mosier talks about a trip to see the L.A. Derby Dolls (he dug it). The conversation quickly devolves into a discussion about whether or not the 80s sci-fi movie Enemy Mine would make a good porno, but the first five or ten minutes are worth checking out."
Speaking of Whip It, although it turned out to underperform at the box office, screenwriter and ex-LADD skater Shauna Cross is apparently now a hot Hollywood property.
Rejoice! The most entertaining sportscaster in the nation is BACK with coverage of last weekend's Nashville vs. Atlanta bout!
Finally, here's a video highlight reel from Hawaii Pacific vs. members of LADD skating as the Haolewoods. This is from awhile back (November, to be exact -- Hawaii won 142-45), but for those of us who have been on the East Coast during the last week, it's a cheering reminder that being outdoors can actually be pleasant.

DNN will get you drunk
LA Derby Dolls league game with the Fight Crew vs. the Tough Cookies. Video webcast on DNN: http://www.derbynewsnetwork.com/live/bouts/2010/02/la_derby_dolls_fight_...
This is a league game.
The following are the banked track modifications for the DNN Drinking Game:
1.2.1 A lead jammer change
1.4.1 Two power jams in a row (penalties are the length of the jam)
2.4 A jammer scores more than 15 points in a single jam (jams are only one minute)
The Derby Dolls rules are actually on line. Sort of: http://sd.derbydolls.com/battleonthebank/images/WORD-Rules-v1-3web.pdf
The only difference I've seen in the rules between WORD and Derby Dolls league games is: WORD interleague rules bench players for 5 trips to the penalty box in the first half, eject for 5 in the second half, and penalties are reset at the half. Similar to WFTDA. Derby Dolls league ejection rules are stricter, and have no reset at the half. Players are ejected for 6 trips to the box for the entire game.
Which means, according to DNN Drinking Game rule 2.1, pay attention to the announcer during the 4th quarter.
DNN's hit the big time
