East Coast Derby Extravaganza team lottery
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Philly Roller Girls yesterday conducted a lottery to determine which teams would get the chance to skate in WFTDA Sanctioned bouts at the East Coast Derby Extravaganza. Watch the adjoining video to see who got in.
The annual three-rink circus at the Sportsplex in suburban Feasterville, Pennsylvania, remains the largest bouting event on the modern roller derby calendar for the fourth year running, featuring at least 21 WFTDA Sanctioned bouts on two tracks over three days, as well as a third track of non-sanctioned action. This year's Extravaganza again takes place on the final weekend of June.
Asked about the switch from first-come first-in to lottery for selecting WFTDA bout participants, PRG's The Cycrone replied, "We decided to go with the lottery system to make it more fair, and less dependent on people's ability to stay up late or access to computers in various time zones. As long as we had everyone's complete information, we wanted to give all interested teams an equal shot."
Skaters whose leagues weren't selected for WFTDA sanctioned bouting still have the opportunity to participate in more casual "Challenge Bouts" on the event's third track. Individual skater registration opens on Monday, February 8th.
ECE's immense popularity, and the success past participants have seen in later tournaments, have led other leagues to organize similar events. Later this month, the Slaughter County Roller Vixens will host the Wild West Showdown in Bremerton, WA, featuring 19 WFTDA Sanctioned bouts. In May, Milwaukee's Brewcity Bruisers host 12 WFTDA bouts over the two-day Midwest BrewHaHa.
DNN coverage of the East Coast Derby Extravaganza and the Wild West Showdown are presented by Fast Girl Skates. With support from our sponsors, and direct contributions from DNN readers and viewers like you, we'll bring you full live whistle-to-whistle coverage from every major derby event (and more than a couple minor ones) this year!

YAY!
So Excited!
Rampant speculation on matchups...
Boston vs Carolina, no duh.
Philly vs Windy City and Philly vs B.A.D. Girls they've already announced. That leaves one more bout a piece for both WCR and BADG. I gotta think that BAD Girls want another shot at Boston...
I'm looking forward to seeing Rose City against the levels of teams they missed playing at Nationals this year.
As easy as Montreal vs Hammer City would be to do at one of their homes, it'd be hella cool to have them play each other HERE. Likewise with Minnesota and North Star. I'm weird like that. I'm glad to see both Canuck teams get in.
Gotham vs Windy City? Gotham vs Rose City?
Go Canadaland
I'm so stoked to see both of our WFTDA teams make it! I think i smell a Canuck roadtrip!!

Wow, coming home from a record-setting* MNRG bout, I get to see this....we're the last ones pulled. Wow. This should be a lot of fun, I'm excited!
* 4,723 tickets. That doesn't count kids 9 and under, who get in free. I had no idea we could hold that many folks.

One heckuva record. Congratulations.

We are so excited!!! We are hoping we can keep it as close as we have with Philly in the past (5pts and 4pts). Either way we plan on having a good time!

There's NEON on the Flat Track!

Maybe both during the day at some point at the parking lot or swimming pool park, and also at the afterparty.

It's Harrisburg (HARD from PA) not Harrison.
That's OK, I can top that error
It's Harrisburg (HARD from PA) not Harrison.
For a half a second I was sitting there going, "Hurricane Alley Roller Derby is in WFTDA? Oh wait, that's Harrisburg. Wrong H.A.R.D."
When I set up bouts I see SOOOOO many league names that whenever I see a common league acronym like SCDG I have to sit and think about which one it is.
Yeah, y'know I think we could
Yeah, y'know I think we could use a list of call letters/initializations and the leagues they represent as a secret decoder ring somewhere. And sorted call letter/initialization alphabetical order, rather than by league.
That way, if we couldn't figure out by context, we could ask "Which one are you talking about?" with a list for them to chose from :)
They call it 'conflation'
Before Harrisburg, Houston was known as "HARD Knocks" so when I see "H.A.R.D." I think of them.
Harrisburg + Houston = Harrison
As if y'all wanted to know more about how my brain works.

Houston's travel team is still known as HaRD Knocks. HRD=Houston Roller Derby.
I wanna say that Knoxville has a similarly named travel team.
And yeah Busta, that would be something neat to have. Acronyms (as DNN calls them) are stored in Derbymatic, but someone would probably have to cook up a custom query to list them all. A bit beyond my abilities. I just works here.

This is great news!
I'm proud and excited to have our Hammer City friends along with us at ECE this year.
Dance off?For sure!
My nails are down to nubs
Cuz I'm feeling really revved up about this year's ECDX. I had a lot of fun with Annie doing the drawing, but I felt so bummed for the 7 applicants that didn't get drawn, including my former (and kick-ass) league, Dutchland. Big sad face, guys. I've got big hopes for next year, though! May you slaughter a challenge opponent in the most wicked of ways!
Anyway, congrats to all that will play this year. There will surely be some fantastic games. Can't wait!

Yay, more Montreal play and wackiness this June! :D
Yep bummer.
Yes it is a major bummer to not have SCDD picked. That's how it goes though. Congrats to the teams who did make it. I can't wait to see the match ups.
Its the most wonderful time of the year....
ECDX always reminds me of the Bowl Season in NCAA football with many intriguing games that reach far and wide across the WFTDA spectrum . Unlike the regional tournaments which are more miss then hit for quality games, you get a full palate of great games that span the entire weekend. The bouts are interesting, as the teams that play each other are generally close in skill level, not to mention the match ups such as Rat City v. Charm City from last year that rarely happens outside of Nationals. ECDX weekend also acts as a litmus test before regionals to gauge where teams are at each season. Couple all this with challenge bouts, warm weather, pool parties, Yuengling beer, and a WAWA within 5 miles of your hotel no matter where you stay and you got one of the best weekends of the year. See you in Feasterville!
Couldn't agree more.

Lemme go a bit further. It's really a shame that attempts to shoot WFTDA derby for TV have been focused on tournament play. There's better match-ups when someone can smartly pick which teams to play rather than get assigned someone by way of seeding. An ECDX-type event gives you the best of both worlds. A whole bunch of leagues in one place (which makes it more affordable to shoot) and better bouts on average.
Of course, that assumes that the picks get made smartly... sometimes they don't. I do have to say that overall ECDX bout picks tend to be done quite well.
Nice shirt Tank!
Hellbombers Repruhzent!
Woo-Hoo! ECE!
So exciting! Great video! I'm so thrilled to see BAD skate in the ECDX!!!
oh - and DC - of course ;) !
there has to be a better way
I understand that not everyone can get in, but its a little rough being a WFTDA team in PA that has tried to get into ECE every year and still has never made it. I play for steel city and we just never have been able to get in while some teams make it every year and some years teams play multiple bouts. I appreciate the lottery this year, it made it more fair. It's just such a bummer we still didn't make it. Congrats to those that did.
Steel City and ECE
I saw Steel City play their first WFTDA game at the first ECE in 2007, against Long Island :)
my bad
I'm sorry, I forgot about that first year. I wasn't counting it because we didn't even have a travel team at that point. It was our first season, we had never played another city. We had a home team bout the night before and threw whoever could go in a van right after words and drove. It wasn't until a whole season later that we formed a travel team and actually played real bouts. The last 3 ECE tournys we tried to get in and didn't make it.
so I'm sorry, I suppose we did make it the first year, I just totally forgot about it.
nevermind then
Correct
You're right Mr. Marshall, SCDD sent a team to the first ECE. This isn't outrage, I just think a lot of skaters out here in Pittsburgh were looking forward to playing a sanctioned game. We love ECE and every year at least a couple dozen of our league members attend to participate in challenges or to enjoy the great games and atmosphere. Big ups to the people at philly for providing such a great event.
"I find your lack of outrage disturbing."
This isn't outrage
WHAT??? IT'S AN OUTRAGE I TELL YOU!!!
Thats....
what I was looking for!
Warning: Eyeballing it
By the looks of it only six teams have been at every ECE: Windy City, Ohio, Charm City, Detroit, Carolina, and Grand Raggidy. Most of those aren't going to be in Feasterville this year with Carolina and Windy City being the only two teams who will have been at all four ECEs.
(gotta love a post that ends with the future perfect tense)
one more
the CT Rollergirls had also been at the first 3 ECEs. This will be the first year we are not playing a WFTDA sanctioned game. I know lottery system blah blah, I can't say we're weren't all super bummed to hear we weren't in this year (especially as an Eastern team.) Good thing we were all drunk at our afterparty when we heard. ;)
cheers

I remember playing you guys when I was with DC, but it was a challenge bout.
Regional Events
There's only so many teams you can put into a weekend without it being a scheduling nightmare. I think the trick is to increase the number of regional events, like the BrewHaHa in Milwaukee, and Rolling Along the River in Sioux City.
Yeah, it always sucks that some leagues miss out, but...
that's how it happens.
We've been working really hard this year at accommodating all of the people that attend, skate, and participate at ECDX. We host an event for scores of leagues and over a thousand skaters, so doing it fairly is very difficult. Developing the lottery system for WFTDA games was (I think) the best way this could happen. Random. We all get a shot. I say this knowing the feeling of being left out, as my former league missed the cut last year by something like 10 minutes. I really hated that Dutchland missed the mark last year and didn't get their wheel picked this year, but them's the cards. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them in 2011.
To address the difficulty of managing so many teams and skaters, I can only encourage leagues out there to put something together. We've had Commotion by the Ocean and Four Corners Feud, so where's the PA Showdown or Hurricanes on Wheels? Seriously...why not? I am excited to see the initiative of the West with Slaughter County hosting the Wild West Showdown next weekend, though tournaments need not be that big. A day, 4 leagues, and a rink could do the trick.
No matter what, skaters pay $30 to get in to see a ridiculous amount of games (and some really kick-ass games at that!), play in the pick-up scrimmage, (hopefully) skate on a challenge team, and keep in touch with our cross-country derby friends. Thanks to Tank for a wonderful assessment of the event, for all of the things I haven't listed. And beyond that...shit! I geek out over my derby heroes, hone my NSO skills, and be part of something huge and amazing. I am a little crazier than many about derby, but $30 for all of this seems like a steal.
I know you were not really making a big deal of this, Mel, but I've written this to remind everyone that even if your team didn't make the WFTDA lottery, you're going to have a blast that weekend. Your enjoyment might only be limited to your attitude, friends, because the last weekend of June is when derby rules the world.

(be forewarned, I've had all day to think of these)
There are plenty of good names for a Pennsylvania-only tournament, much like how Texas has their Governor's Cup. Here's some ideas for names:
Harrisburg: Keystone Throwdown
Dutchland: The Fight for Gelassenheit
Steel City: The Whiskate Rebellion (bonus if you get a sponsorship deal with PLCB and Rittenhouse Rye)
Philly: Members Only Extravaganza, aka, MOE.
And I yearn for a WFTDA league in southwest Pennsylvania, for they would have the best tournament name possible: The Pennsyltucky Family Reunion.

Win. Not even any room for debate on that. Just. Pure. Win.

sorry
I didn't mean to come off as mad or anything, I was just wondering if there was any better way to pick teams. its just such a bummer is all
Team Selection
The lottery structure this year was developed using feedback that we heard over the course of the 5 months prior to and 6 months following the 2009 ECE. We are happy to consider new ideas for the selection process: if you brainstorm and come up with something, feel free to let us know.
cross-state rivalry
i, for one, was super excited to see the pa cross-state bout at easterns.
hey but at least
...you get to say you are going to be the first league to play a TT vs TT international game! It's all about the first right. ;)
The British are coming!!!

ECE2010 WFTDA Team Update
Here's an update: Cincinnati has decided not to participate in Sanctioned action at the ECE this year. Dutchland, first on the waitinglist, has accepted the slot.
Dutchland
...and we couldn't be more thrilled to be a part of this event. We have had our entire league at each ECE so far and played in challenge bouts (DC in 2007, PRG's Broad Street Butchers in 2008, and Cape Fear in 2009). Last year was our first shot at the sanctioned games since joining the WFTDA in December 2008, but we missed out by a few minutes. We were definitely bummed to miss the cut for 2010 (especially with the news being delivered by our awesome former All-Star Captain!). Cinci will be missed, but we are happy to step into place and rock some ECE action!
But Huzzah!
Things have turned your way! This little devil is dancing!

Thiere is nothing in derby like ECDX. I was there in the snow & I will be there in the sun. I constantly praise the Philly Roller Girls for creating the MOST amazing & well organized tournament of the year. It is not regionally exclusive & has provided some of the best derby match ups over the past 3yrs. The lottery system works well & is the most fair. Everyone on the east coast want to skate at ECDX. There will be teams that will not get in. If you want to see a Philly only or east coast only tournament, creat one. My hats off to the Philly Roller Girls for putting Feasterville on the map......
I love me some Philly Girls!!!
