Weekly Rollup and Open Thread, 1/8/2010

WFTDA.com has posted their second monthly Featured Skater and Featured League: Hydra, and the current holders of the Hydra.

Carolina Roller Girls Best Hits of 2009 highlight reel. Especially painful watching for anybody who has had the misfortune of personally bouncing off the Dorton Arena floor.

Speaking of Carolina: Have you been pining for another derby-related Yahoo group to join? You're in luck! Carolina video guru $3 Bill has launched a derby video group to help get more leagues started on DIY livestreaming their action. For obvious reasons, we have high hopes for great success from that group.

The Jersey Shore Roller Girls demonstrate a new drill where the pack has to navigate around a stationary obstacle who is, like, totally shredding on his sweet axe.

Last week we linked to The Sports Circuit for their mention of DNN as "not the worst sports site we've seen" in the course of talking about derby. TSC producer Josh contacted us to let us know that both modern derby and DNN are discussed at greater length in this podcast episode from a couple weeks back. It's ... an interesting listen.

And finally ... aw jeez. Demanda Riot and Miss E. Vil's dad has chewed through his restraints, evaded the security perimeter and located a keyboard.

Got a funny, interesting, intriguing or just weird link for next Friday's Open Thread? Let us know.

"Dicks"

I'd like the minute back I invested in reading that piece of crap. Sadly, I don't think I'll ever recoup it.

Ugh...

For real. Gotta love the opinion pages!

Do I want to see women's derby eclipsed by Dangle derby? Um no, but seriously, there is room for everyone here man... And the breakdown of women v men, how much more classically "the interpretation of women as made by men" can that get...

Dang!

Sorry Demanda, I'm sure Daddy Demanda is cool in general.

Sports Circuit

One of the dudes sounded pretty cool, even if some of his facts were slightly off.

The other one needs to be bodyslammed, and not in the way he'd like.

This is pretty typical in the

This is pretty typical in the sports writer/fan community. Someone discovers it, gets it, and then their peers are skeptical and don't vet their negative opinions with facts. Most of the time, you won't even know this is going on, because the conversation occurs out of view.

Contrary to popular mythology, if you build a better mousetrap, the world never beats a path to your door. It takes a long time to propagate the information that a better mousetrap has been invented, a bunch of people will say the old one was just fine and the world doesn't need better mousetraps, the people who don't have mouse infestations will question why people need mousetraps in the first place, and a bunch of other people will say that mice should be free to roam and the whole concept of mousetraps is wrong headed.

The corollary here is that the sports press and sports writers and fans don't think that roller derby is necessary as a sport, many think the world was better off that roller derby was dead, many don't think women's sports are necessary or that women athletes deserve *any* respect, many think that any iteration of roller derby is inherently corrupt and staged and that women's roller derby as the dominant form right now exists mainly for the jiggle factor. This should hardly be surprising. You go to a sports bar on a game day, and the place is packed with douchebags.

Wasn't "Sports Circuit" the

Wasn't "Sports Circuit" the name of that band on the Electric Company? Oh, wait, that was the SHORT CIRCUS. I regret the error.

Yawn

Dudes are bad. That's so 2008.

Maybe

that's because this article has been on hellarad for over a year or so?

almost.

We put up Papa Riot's article in July, just before RollerCon. But yeah...old newz.

Just wait 'till issue #5...WILD WEST SHOWDOWN, anyone???

Ok...

LOL... I now know why Demanda wanted to completely destroy me during the Awesome v SeXY bout last month. Easily, one of the top-five blockers I never want to jam against again.
edit: that is "blockers" of both genders

Thank you, Carolina

I am currently down with a broken leg and for anyone who's ever been out, you know how it feels when you can't get on the track. This group of clips evokes that beautiful, overwhelming urge to play this sport. It's enough to bring a tear to your eye. Anyway, thanks for bringing me this tasty treat to hold me over until I'm back in the game and thanks to DNN for posting the link!

Derby love to all of you,
Uma
Demolition City Roller Derby

Papa Riot-Vil's writing is Dicktastic

yeah, I said Dicktastic

Comprehension fail

I initially read that as 'Dickensian'. Ooops.

Bruce Dickenson loves Halestorm

"The Jersey Shore Roller Girls demonstrate a new drill where the pack has to navigate around a stationary obstacle who is, like, totally shredding on his sweet axe."

Not to mention using the cowbell to explore the studio space!

Thanks DNN...

...for including Jersey Shore Roller Girls on your Weekly Rollup. We LOVE that Halestorm chose to use us and our venue for their video. While we have not hit the national derby stage yet, we do hope that you all will see more of Convention Hall in the future.

uses proper dicktion...

...in the dicktation... it sounds kinda ridickulous, unfortunately... go overboard on the man hatin', much? Seriously, I have met only respectful and derby-qualified men that are in some capacity involved with the sport, not a single exception yet and I hope that streak continues forever... have met a few 'dicks' in the stands though, unfortunately, usually dragging knuckles and grab-assin' each other as they publicly demonstrate why they will never qualify for or obtain the amorous attention of the very women they are ogling... I find them more sad then offensive as do most of the women of derby I know, who, btw, are more than capable of taking care of themselves... right, Papa Riot?

Whoosh

Did you note which site that commentary was on?

Yes.

Noted. And moving on with a goofy look on my face.
Whooosh!!!
