DNN Thanks YOU, Part 5: Live Video

2009 brought many exciting new developments for us here at DNN, but probably the most surprising (even for us) was the emergence of frequent live video boutcasting with dedicated sportscaster commentary. Like just about anything that happens on this site -- and in derby as a whole, for that matter -- a haphazard experiment developed quickly into an entrenched part of the overall offering.

We first featured live streaming video just over one year ago, when an intrepid Houston Roller Derby staffer pointed a laptop webcam at the track during West Regionals in 2008. The very next week, Hinckley Productions offered a feed from their board while they shot video for East Regionals DVDs, and MavTV allowed us to stream their gorgeous HD raw feed while shooting Nationals for later packaging and cable broadcast. By February 2009, another wild hair emerged... instead of just taking the house PA audio, we thought, what would happen if we handed microphones to Bob Noxious and Dumptruck and let them call the action at the Four Corner Feud straight to the video stream? Well, naturally, what happened was awesome.

Since then, not a single major event has passed without live streaming video and a dedicated sportscaster call. As with everything else we do, this was possible only because a veritable army of talent volunteered their capabilities to make it possible. In this edition of DNN Thanks YOU, we acknowledge the Video Crew who made it all happen - who operated the cameras, strung the cables, operated the scoreboard overlays, and worked the video switchers; likewise, we thank the Voices who brought their insights, experience, and passion for roller derby to make those video presentations really come alive as a true sports showcase.
