Flat-track roller derby game for the iPhone. Yes, really. It turns out none of your DNN editors actually own iPhones, so we're DYING for somebody to download this and review it in comments.
Pretty slickly edited highlight reel from Rocky Mountain's win over Detroit two weeks back, although I must admit the soundtrack makes me think of glowsticks and ketamine more than roller skating.
Possibly the most unique bout poster collection you will ever see, courtesy of Boston Derby Dames' Dreadnought.
Dolly Rocket fever has apparently hit the United Kingdom.
Here's a couple of good examples of mainstream-press articles we missed in our recovery from Nationals: The Olympian gives props to the new champs of WFTDA, and the Austin Chronicle's Richard Whittaker delivers one of the best derby articles we've ever seen, looking at the state of derby in 2009 through the experiences and quotes from Texecutioners Crackerjack, Bloody Mary, Lucille Brawl, Cat Tastrophe and bench coach Koolaid, among others.
Look out! Dahmernatrix's butt is COMING RIGHT AT YOU!
The city of Austin has declared today Texas Rollergirls Day.
UPDATE BONUS LINK: This highlight video from Carolina's recent doubleheader bout against Steel City and Dixie is so totally sweet that we're going to embed it right here so even the laziest amongst you have a chance to experience its greatness. Seriously, this is more than worth 4:01 of your time, so click play. Passed along by Evil Ed, shot and edited by Mr. Pink.
Got a funny, interesting, intriguing or just weird link for next Friday's Open Thread? Let us know.

"This is less fun than previously indicated."
Review of the roller derby game for the iPhone: it needs work. There are no instructions provided, the controls don't always seem to do what you think they're supposed to, and it doesn't represent any version of flat track derby you may be familiar with (unless all four of your jammer's teammates are warming up the penalty seats).
Also, the title graphic is squashed. It is free, though, so you get what you pay for. Hopefully they'll be able to polish it up.
(If iPhone/iPod Touch users haven't already, get the Penalty Timer app, even if you're not going to use it. ;p)
Roller Derby for iPhone
I'm not too savvy when it comes to the video games so don't expect too much from my review.
1) It's free - so that made my day! I like free things that have to do with Roller derby
2) You play a jammer and I don't really like playing jammer.
3) My team mates kept getting in my way so it's realistic at least (hehehe)
4) I lost, a lot.
Perhaps someone with more mad skillz would be better to review it but I'm sure I'll be playing it when I get bored. The main thing, it's free! You can't beat free.

iPhone App, ESPN Article
I have an iPhone so I'll check out that roller derby app as soon as I can get it on my phone. While searching for it I saw another beat app for penalty box officials for timing penalties, it has multiple timers, dedicated timers for jammers, and it vibrates at 10 seconds left. Not free ($2.99) but looks extremely handy!
Also, I don't think I've seen this on DNN yet: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=barry/091210
We saw the ESPN bit...
... but we steered clear of it because, upon further digging, it seems pretty clear that it's less about derby and more about leveraging derby to launch a reality-media career. Not really our beat.

That Dahmermatrix photo
That Dahmermatrix photo reminds me about this montage reel from Toby Dammit, "Carnage in Turn 1":

skate and destroy
Once upon a time hearing that song made me want to jump on my board and piss off my neighbors. Now it makes me want to lace up my boots and hit things with my hips. That clip made my whole week, even if I feel old since I've seen The Faction live. That Toby's a trooper!
So whats with BeVideo Roller derby girl app?
I see some carolina logos on the front of the skaters in the inage of the app, anyone know who is associated with it? I was even gonna pay the 99 cents to find out what it was but I am having a problem with my downloading right now, so I'll ask.
I hope the ladies used in the images used in the app are getting a cut of that 99 cents...
I downloaded that one, too.
I downloaded that one, too. From what I can tell it's just an aggregation of somewhat unrelated YouTube videos. Not recommended.
If someone is making money off it...
It better be the people who own the rights to the videos. I'd be calling someone who knows intellectual property laws if I made or was in one of those vids...
Thanks for the Carolina Video
Reminds me of how much I love them Carolina girls. Princess America, Kitty, DVS and Shirley Temper have all been skating for-evah and a day. Such a great league! xo
Hmm. . .
I was really excited to download it. It is free but, it's really not that great. Hopefully they do make it more fun to play in the future.
The Carolina Rollergirls video on this page is really great, thanks for sharing!
Well hello there
Ahhh... so THIS is why I'm suddenly getting hits to my little blog. Now I wish I'd uploaded better photos of my skate book!
Banked tracks in 2010
Where are we going to be this time next year? Any speculation or outright new prospects for new banked track venues in the 12 months ahead?
Just throwin' it out there.
Modern Banked Track Roller Derby in 2010
There are several more track builds going on right now so one would expect at least one or two more leagues to come to the forefront this year with new tracks, if not more. You can come to places like SD, LA and OK to play banked track even if you don't have one at your home venue. A new track is well on it's way in AZ with the Derby Dames too.
Bitchy Kitten has been involved in a lot of these track builds. San Diego Derby Dolls' new track is being built from his designs. We have an old school track that we use for training in our Doll House but does not get moved due to her old age. We are building a new one for bouting at our public venues that should be ready for the 2010 season. To find out more about Bitchy's banked tracks check out: www.kittentraxx.com

Bring more of it!
Isabelle rocks the banked track and SDDD, after all these years, has been one of my most favorite stops. Great people. I've called a lot of bouts. I don't count them, but there can't be many who have seen more. I have three moments in all of that which I will never forget - being part of the first Dust Devil, calling a wild-ending bout for B.A.D. at a magnificient Nationals in Portland, and working the National Banked Championship last year. No, it didn't have the drama of the previous year, nor all the glamour, but flat-trackers, it's a great game. Granted, and rumor has it this is being done, it needs standardized rules. House rules do hurt legitimacy in any sport. Good vs. bad matchups will come into play as in any bout. But last year's Battle of the Bank II in Austin gave us two bouts worth seeing again. Most would be surprised to know many of the rules written for that event were adapted from WFTDA 3.1.
Yeah, it's a bitch to load a freight truck with tons of piping, plywood and laminate flooring, it takes a good day to set up, but the final four that weekend was as much fun as it gets. You think one-minute jams aren't long enough...blah...blah...blah, well, realistically, how many full two-minute jams do we run? And the beauty of the one-minute jam is it is total balls out from the whistle. Others will complain about the lead jammer changing. In banked track, the jammer in the lead IS the lead jammer. Balls out jams and fights to get out front make for nothing short of thrilling derby. To me, anything that makes derby slow, sucks. Banked track will never disappoint. The penalites are WELL COMMUNICATED ("white board girl" would hold up a board to the announcer booth with player numbers and abbreviations for penalties after every jam - can we adapt this please?), penalties are much easier to understand - fans actually get them - and, at least that weekend, the officiating was spot on (not a dig on flat track officiating which, I thought, had a stellar year). Hand signals are nice, our refs are much better at using them, but unless we're raised, you can't see every spot on the track and you just plain miss signals. Not in that tourney. The SDDD victory over LADD was potentially one of the greatest bouts I've had the pleasure of calling.
Hey, I have plenty of friends skating at Playland. I love them and won't stick myself in the middle of what was and the feelings that remain. But I can say the ladies at TXRD were no less hospitable. All of us who travel a lot during the year know the pressure of the schedule, empty pockets once we get there, and feel the change as the sport grows in its professionalism. But TXRD treated me as well as anyone and I hope I'll have the honor of doing it again.

Hug a ref today
I propose that today, December 26, should be recognized as the official derby referees' day -- (Penalty) Boxing Day!
Banked Track Standardized Rules
We're on the official 2nd version, but its really the 3rd iteration. They are based on the flat track standardized rules (with permission from the WFTDA) and have most of the same pack and penalty rules. There are differences - one minute jams and banked track lead jammer rules are part of the flavor of banked track - and pulling skaters from a jam that's moving so fast has been deemed unsafe by the refs. But there are a lot more similarities than those relatively minor differences.
San Diego is also extremely open to visiting skaters. If you make your way to Southern California, check it out for yourself. Its like having chocolate be your favorite ice cream... choosing strawberry once in awhile just makes the chocolate taste better. Mmmm, ice cream... its all yummy!
Updates to recent comments!
Just noticed a suggestion that Brad Example made back when the new site launched has been made: you can now see who left a comment on the recent comments page!
thanks!
Yep!
I mentioned it to Gnosis at Nationals, and he's followed through! Should save a decent amount of clicking.
IPhone derby Apps
I was far too excited when I downloaded the game and was a lil bummed. You can control the jammer to go left, right, and forward(which looks like a cross over) and thats it. My blockers are always in the way and dont do much, I couldnt even get a whip or anything from my team. My personal blocking skills gave me the idea to just block out the other jammer, and that wasnt an option when I tried. I have yet to win :0( The game needs a lil work, I'm glad it was free!
As for the pentaly timer app.... Wow! One person can control all SIX penalties! I paid for this app, now I just need to find someone to use it, cause I'm usually skating.
