Team SeXY Challenges Team Awesome in Banked Action

SAN DIEGO, CA -- With the tournament and championship seasons finally behind us, and everyone already having their share of discussions on whether or not new WFTDA champions Oly Rollers are changing the face of roller derby, it’s time to get back to some old-school loosely-organized roller derby to close out 2009's action.

This Saturday night Team Awesome, a national all-female all-star roller derby team, will battle Team SeXY, an international all-male all-star roller derby team, on the banked track, bringing the roller derby community the first all-female vs. all-male banked track game ever. The game will be a highlight of Team Awesome’s three-day training camp, benefiting the San Diego Derby Dolls and held in SDDD’s practice space, the Dollhouse, in downtown San Diego.

This bout is TENTATIVELY scheduled to be streamed live on DNN at 8pm Pacific (11pm Eastern) on Saturday, December 19. Check back for coverage updates!

The last time Team Awesome and Team SeXY played each other was in the heat of the streets of Las Vegas, on the flat track, during a Fremont Street challenge at RollerCon 2009. Team SeXY won the 20 minute exhibition 43-37. Justice Feelgood Marshall of Team SeXY recalls that it was Rinkworm and Quadzilla who scored most of Team SeXY’s points that day with 20 and 17 respectively.

Justice also recalls that going into the game Team SeXY “didn’t know whether it was going to be close, or whether they [Team Awesome] were going to destroy us.”

“The fact that it was close,” Justice continued, “doesn’t make us scared to play them again, but it’s a very different line up this time.”

In their usual fashion, Team Awesome played the RollerCon game with many substitute players. It was Wednesday, the opening day of RollerCon, and about half of Team Awesome’s usual players hadn’t arrived in Las Vegas yet, so subs from the Los Angeles Derby Dolls and San Diego Derby Dolls were given jerseys -- that roster included LADD's Krissy Krash and Iron Maiven, who had memorable cameos in Whip It as the Manson Sisters, among others.

Ivanna remembers, “We had a pretty good line up of subs for that Team Awesome vs. SeXY game…and that hurt losing to them, I have to admit.”

Team Awesome will be playing this Saturday with quite a different lineup than they played with at RollerCon. Ivanna S. Pankin, Trish the Dish and Dahmernatrix from San Diego, Medusa from North Star, and Annie Maul from Kansas City will be the only five holdovers. The rest will be experienced Team Awesome members, with only one debut for this game.

The Team Awesome roster for this Saturday also includes Demanda Riot and Velveteen Savage from Bay Area, Jackie Daniels from Windy City, Goodie Two Skates from Rose City, She Who Cannot Be Named from Rocky Mountain, and Muffin from Duke City. Kiki DiAzz of the San Diego Derby Dolls is the sole first-timer.

Huh?

What?!? We gotta play this weekend? Shit! I better go practice!

its 11 degrees

in Masachusetts and I should be on a place to Sunny California right now but again, my work schedule sucks. Good luck and keep us SeXY Guys!!

I thought Team Awesome's

I thought Team Awesome's first game was at Rollercon, against San Diego Derby Dolls in the form of Team Rad. Maybe I'm wrong about that.

Nope

The first ECE in March 2007 ... the year of the freak ice storm that nearly killed the Carolina Rollergirls and DID kill a fair amount of cars unfortunate enough to be parked directly under a falling ice shelf. The Awesome / Rad game happened in July 2007.

Team Awesome

I totally remember Team Awesome at that ECE, because one of the teams that faced them was Windy City's Double Crossers. At the time, the Crossers had been calling themselves "Team Awesome" internally, and we had no idea that there was an actual team called Team Awesome. So when we saw that we had the opportunity to play Team Awesome at ECE we jumped at the chance, because to us, it was Team Awesome vs. Team Awesome.
They stomped us and we quit referring to ourselves as Team Awesome (out loud, at least).

!! and NERD.

!! and NERD.

AAAHHHH

Oh God please don't remind me of that day! I was the one with the clipboard taking down insurance information and trying to calm down the owner of a vehicle whose back window was completely blown out. That was the worst day ever...

Maya King,

Super Fun and Burritos

To echo the Rev, San Diego seems really appealing right now, with the sub freezing temperatures and wind chill we have here (and the dearth of decent taquerias). I wish my budget would've allowed me to go and skate with Team SeXY. It looks like it's going to be a fun bout with some amazing skaters. Best of luck to both teams!

Jackie Daniels

Jackie Daniels is with Windy City now instead of Grand Raggidy? Wow, didn't know that. Thanks for the update!

Yes!

Windy City is excited to welcome our newest transfer skaters, Jackie Daniels of Grand Raggidy and Dinah Party of Gotham.

We now have both Donna Party and Dinah Party on the league. Yay Party Sisters! (they really are sisters!)

Unfortunately this bout will NOT be covered live

TA captain Ivanna S. Pankin requested that DNN not cover this bout live. Trust me, no one is more bummed than me :(

My dog was just laying on her bed chewing on a big stick and my husband came and took it away. I think she probably feels a lot like I do right now.

Why would she not want it covered?

You'd have to ask Ivanna

I don't want to speak for her, so hopefully she will drop in and answer that.

The Scores page says ...

Team Awesome prevailed, 132-102.

Sounds like a pretty competitive bout -- hope a recap is posted soon.

Bummed.

I was really, really looking forward to this. Lame.

I dare say your team isn't SeXY enough

without Jonathan R.

Yep

I have never skated banked track before Saturday.
I would like to make a list of the good and bad of this event.

First the Bad -
No photographer during the bout that I am aware of. (please tell me I'm wrong)
No video or text boutcast. (no excuse)
Stats may or may not exist. (non-sanctioned event so I may expect too much)

The Good -
SDDD - Excellent hosts!
Team Awesome! Talk major shit on the track and still pinch your ass at the after party.
Trish and Ivanna - <3
SoCal Refs - Had to step it up a bit for this bout and held their own.
Vendors - Showed up in force to support derby. How it should be.
Banked Track - Fuck-N-A!! I will be changing focus to making my league bi-trackual.

I would like to echo

Pitchit's good statements. The bad for me was having to come home and drag myself into work today!

I too was a banked track virgin until this weekend, but I couldn't have asked for a better "first" experience!

Thank you Team Awesome (esp Trish and Ivanna!), Team Sexy and SDDD!

Glad to see more banked track mojo!

As a big preacher of the Banked track Gospel, it was (yet again) uber-exciting to see so many skaters trying banked for the first time. The crazy smile everyone gets when building up amazing speeds dipping through the turns-- it never gets old, never.

It's also awesome to see established and phenomenal skaters like 'She Who' try the bank for the first time!

Seriously, LA also has a pretty open-door policy for visiting skaters (and have a bigger, more 'modern' banked track-- which the new SDDD will be based on)-- so you owe it to yourself to come out and give it a try-- it's a different thing, but a new dynamic to this ever growing sport!

And make sure to mark your calendar, as LADD is hosting a big Banked & Flat & More training camp in Los Angeles this Spring...

Who Won?

Sexy or Awesome? Or is there a whole write-up I just haven't seen yet?

TA won

It was on the scores page: Team Awesome 132, Team SeXY 102

Ivanna sucks. We should kill her.

I am so sorry I asked them not to stream the bout. I had NO IDEA in advance that it was getting streamed (I have to blame crossed wires, different interpretations of an email, and our hellacious christmas rush short one employee at work for that). But 20 minutes before the bout, with a super short man team and an exhausted group of coaches on the lady team... when Justice told me it was getting streamed, it came as a big surprise and everyone at RC knows when you surprise me my first answer is always NO... I truly feared for safety, and in that moment, immediately before the bout with half of both teams crashed on couches and thoroughly tired - that if the bout had to be called, we'd disregard safety and not want to call it if it was being streamed.

NOW of course in hindsight, I feel like an ass because NOW I realize all the dude teams wanted to see their homies play and there were people out there that would have watched, and I am so sorry. I get credit for a lot of shit and sometimes it seems I get blamed for even more shit, deserved and otherwise - but in this case, the blame is totally deserved. I am sorry.

The good news is that it was TAPED and so it is watchable (tho I don't know the status of it... I do know I have a version on my desktop but I am too retarded to know how to put it on youtube or whatever. But if someone wants to walk me through it, I'm down).

It was a great, super fast, super physical game - my take was that the dude team strengths were power and speed, and the girls played smarter and more together. But both teams played great and there was a ton of action. I think Justice said it might end up in archives somewhere?

And Kali is writing a review, too, I think.

Really really repentant,
Ivanna

Let's not kill her. Let's

Let's not kill her. Let's just S. Pank her!

And in fact, the taped

Though the first thing you see is part 2. I've tried to find a way to fix it, but it does what it does.

Edit: Maybe I did fix it. It seems to be coming up in the right order now.

Censorship on DNN

This may be the first case of outside censorship of DNN content.

If one looks back at the content aired on DNN this year, there were several bouts streamed that may not have been the best representation of the sport to the general public. No one, DNN included, stepped in and decided there was reason not to air a bout because of the perceived possible outcome of the game beforehand.

If we care about derby having thoughtful exposure in journalism, and fairness in that journalism that extends to all forms of the sport, we might not want to participate in censoring DNN content. Hopefully leagues and events managers will consider this issue very seriously in the future.

To be fair, there's an important consideration here

... that being that the Camp Awesome event was happening in a private space and closed to the public. Any video coverage of the event was totally at the discretion of the space owners (San Diego Derby Dolls) & event hosters (Team Awesome). They were totally within their rights to deny us the opportunity to livestream it, whether or not we agreed with the reasoning.

Had it been a public bout to start with, the issue would have been quite a bit greyer.

and there are photos!

But they're not in a gallery, just on the photographer's FTP site. So hopefully someone has time to upload them to flikr or somewhere, if the photog will let us. Again, I downloaded them from the FTP, but - well, still busy at work and haven't had time to check them out.

Bitchy kitten

I've had the pleasure of sitting within earshot of Bitchy at derby bouts for a year or so, and it is always a fun time. He's a man who is seldom at a loss for words!

Bitchy also hosts/moderates the chat room during live games on derbydolls.tv so pop in on Jan 23rd and say hi!!

Bitchy...

Told me after the game that he wanted to "hand his dick back to god" or something along those lines after the game.

One of the finest compliments I've ever received!
