MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- The North Star Supernovas (NSRG) of Minneapolis, MN hosted the Hammer City Roller Girls (HCRG) Eh! Team for a WFTDA sanctioned scrimmage at a local roller rink Sunday morning, November 22, 2009. This was the second WFTDA sanctioned bout for HCRG, who had just competed in their first WFTDA bout (versus the Minnesota RollerGirls in St. Paul, MN) the night before. The Supernovas won 140-18 after a very fast-paced bout.

The game got off to a sleepy start, with no lead jammers and the score at 0-0 until the third jam when the NSRG took lead and posted five points on the board. After that, the Supernovas woke up the game with a handful of high-scoring jams, including a 17-point power jam by MEDUSA that brought the score to 36-3.

By the ninth jam of the period, the Supernovas put their high scoring jams to bed and mostly opted to use their lead jammer status to call off the jams after only one scoring pass (or no scoring passes if the Hammer City jammer was on their tail). The Eh! Team’s impressive jammer speed was repeatedly shut down by a wall of green at the front of each pack, shutting HCRG out in 17 of the 20 jams and ending the first period with a score of 70-9.

The second period brought a slightly different game, thanks to packed penalty boxes on both sides. Both teams brought out a quicker pace and more aggressive hitting, which kept the skaters flying around – and occasionally outside of – the track. Hammer City came out swinging and scored 7 of their 9 remaining points on the first three jams. After that, the Supernovas shut them out for 13 consecutive jams. The game closed with a perfect doubling of each team’s halftime score: 140-18 in favor of the North Star Supernovas.

The Supernovas kept the pack racing the entire game. Even the strong four-jammer rotation of Jawbreaker, Katarina Hit, MEDUSA and Naughty Kitty had a hard time catching the lightening-fast pack. This was noticeably different than HCRG’s bout against the Minnesota RollerGirls the night before, where MNRG took advantage of the slow game, consistently trapping Hammer City in the back and allowing their jammers to fly by.

Hammer City appeared to be using the strategy that defeated them the night before, but were not successful. Vicadoom and Carla Coma took on the bulk of HCRG’s jamming, donning the star in 28 of their 40 jams combined. Hammer City was great at hitting continually, trying to get in the Supernovas’ heads. Dicey, Eduskating Rita and Bitchslap Barbie held a strong defense against the green jammers while Judge Jodie and Perky Set did all they could to help their jammers get through the pack. For the Supernovas, Jawbreaker, Black Sunshine and Tara Bichapart put the hurt on the Hammer City jammers, while the rest of their teammates held a solid wall at the front of the pack.

The Supernovas are hibernating for the winter but will be back in April to play their favorite annual opponents, the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz. Hammer City will be playing Fort Wayne’s Bomb Squad in February.

First bout?

"This was the second WFTDA sanctioned bout for HCRG, who had just competed in their first WFTDA bout (versus the Minnesota RollerGirls in St. Paul, MN) the night before."

Didn't Hammer City play Montreal earlier this year after they joined WFTDA, or was that not a sanctioned bout? Or am I just making stuff up?

Also, I love being in one of the international regions!

International = Way Cool

Me too. Here in the Twin Cities we've got Winnipeg to the north, a brand-new league in Thunder Bay to the Northeast, and now visits from Hammer City. I *love* that the North Central Region is mixing newses and bruises with Canada. :-)

MTLRD vs HCRG was not sanctioned

Unfortunately our game against MTLRD was not sanctioned. We also played a full roster of Steel Hurtin in the summer but that bout also was not sanctioned.

Ah, ok

Gotcha, thanks for clearing that up. Even still, Canada on Canada WFTDA action? Win!

Love that "perfect doubling" -- 70-9 times 2

What are the chances? Or was there some, uh, manipulation at bout end, hmmm ;)
