2009 was the best year for roller derby since 2008. We saw some truly epic bouts, new faces, massive leaps forward in athleticism and strategy, and a bigger-than-ever tournament season that brought 40 teams to the table in 5 cities -- a pretty impressive display of how far the sport has come since the very first modern interleague bouts were played just 5 years ago.
Trying to narrow down all this action into a handful of categories and nominees was a tough -- but fun -- chore, and today we're happy to present the first of what we hope will be many annual DNN Best Of The Year polls.
The categories this year are Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, Most Underrated Player, Bout of the Year, Best Rivalry, Most Improved Team, Best Venue, Best Announcer, and Best Photographer. Voting is open for a week and closes on Monday, December 21 at 8pm EST. Check DNN on Wednesday, December 23 for the results!
A few notes:
For purposes of the "Rookie of the Year" category, we're defining a rookie as somebody who played her first game for her league's primary travel team in 2009.
For the Best Photographer section, we've included two shots from each nominee in the gallery. You can also find most of their shots at the following links:

Craig Lammes: Flickr
Derek Lang (Bagelhot): Website
Joe Schwartz (Joe Rollerfan): Facebook | Flickr
Jules Doyle (Axle Adams): Facebook | Flickr
Stalkerazzi: Flickr
Phil Peterson (Phil Da Pain): Website | Flickr
And before you say it: Yes, we know we left your favorite player / bout / rivalry / team / venue / announcer / photographer off the nominee list. That's because we are jerks, and have a personal vendetta against you and/or your favorite player / bout / rivalry / team / venue / announcer / photographer. We have, though, provided a write-in box for every category, so feel free to make your case in the comments for anybody you feel has been overlooked!
This poll is now closed.

Best Announcers... plural
Since it isn't a category I wanted to voice my opinion that the combination of Val Capone + Dirty Marty is the best announcer pair.
Gotta give my public shout out
to my personal favorite announcer duo:
Da Jewce & Queer & Present Danger
And I will fully admit that I am hugely biased.
Thank you for all of the hard work that you've done announcing for RMRG all of these years sweetie!
Muah!
Winona Fighter
P.S. Da Jewce/Dumptruck combo is also not too shabby!
No Favorite Derby Truism?
IT'S AN OUTRAGE.
HUH
Whats an outrage is RMRG picked Whipity Pow as there Rookie of the Year in 2008 not 2009....Give it to a ROOKIE!!
just to reiterate
For purposes of the "Rookie of the Year" category, we're defining a rookie as somebody who played her first game for her league's primary travel team in 2009.
Many, many skaters who meet this definition were also standout skaters in previous seasons of intraleague skating. We didn't poll for rookies at that level because very few of our readers will have had the opportunity to see rookie skating at the intraleague level.
word definition
the word 'outrage' might be a little much...but like hurt said, rating rookies on their first year with travel teams makes sense.
Rookie
Whipity did get "rookie of the year" within the league in 2008, but she didn't play a game with Fight Club until 2009. She also broke her ankle and was out for a large chunk of last season. So she pretty much won RMRG's rookie of the year on her sheer awesomeness in practice and maybe a small handful of intraleague or expo bouts, if that. She is already a badass derby machine, but when you really think about how little overall experience she has compared to other skaters, she is pretty amazing.
Rookie
She did Play with RMRG's Fight Club in 2008...That is why she got "ROOKIE OF THE YEAR" All I did was look on your website!! I am just trying to make a point Not trying to be Rude but she has 2 Years of Bouting Experiance "INTERLEAGUE" at that!! She did a Great Job.... But not Exactly a Rookie, I mean some of the other girls THIS was there First Year!! That is Amazing.....
Totally Feeling You On This
This is just like how the Grammys said that Lady Gaga wasn't a new artist this year because her "Just Dance" single was nominated for an award last year.
OUTRAGE
rook
In an effort to get to the bottom of this deeply troubling mystery I went back through my detailed photographic archives of RMRG games and found no visual evidence to support a pre-2009 Travel Team Whippity Pow Theory.
By my unofficial and drunken records Whip's first travel team game was against Team Awesome in March of this year and that wasn't a sanctioned game.
-Professor Dandruff
yep
I'm pretty sure the professor is right. Where exactly on the site does it say she played in 2008 on Fight Club?
And you are an expert on RMRG because?
EDITORS' NOTE: This post has been removed because it violated the DNN Code of Conduct, as it discouraged what we here strive to encourage: discussion that is thoughtful, vigorous, and above all, courteous.
WHIPITY POW'S OFFICIAL STATUS FROM RMRG
I just checked our archives and as of Jan. 1, 2009, Whipity was on RMRG's B-squad, the Contenders and on one of our home teams.
She played her first bout with our A-squad, the 5280 Fight Club, in March as an alternate. Fight Club chooses its game alternates from the Contenders lineup.
She made Fight Club as a full member in the next evaluation period. This is how RMRG is structured.
RMRG's "Rookie of the Year" is *not* a designation reserved only for our primary travel team members. Any new player on our league from a calendar year qualifies as a rookie candidate. Whip joined RMRG in 2008 and was a standout on our league, but did not play with FC in 2008. Like everyone else new in 2008, she was eligible as our *league* rookie of the year, *not* as Fight Club's Rookie of the Year. By the DNN definition, this is her Rookie Year for Fight Club and, as such, qualifies as a candidate in this poll.
I hope this helps. I apologize I did not say this earlier. I figured DNN had the records somewhere and would clear it up.

I love that this became an
I love that this became an investigation worthy of the underage Chinese gymnasts from the last summer Olympics.
DNN is doing something awesome in recognizing some truly deserving skaters and volunteers. Sure, there are 1,001 other skaters and volunteers who deserve equal recognition but aren't going to get it. I would also like a giant cookie right now but that's not happening. You can recognize those other folks in your own way (pats on the ass are always nice unless you're creepy) rather than choosing to bring honorees down or demanding proof of eligibility, which is just plain hilarious. I'm sure DNN did their homework and if they didn't, will the earth fall off its axis?
Anyway, I voted for Whipity Pow but I play banked track so what the hell do I know?
Word
Was hoping I wouldn't have to go archive snooping. It was a pain.
Thanks to DangerousLeigh for clearing that up
The massive irony in all of this is that we were right about Whipity but wrong about KCRW's Eclipse; Bruz-Her recently brought it to my attention that Eclipse was on the roster for three 2008 bouts, thus making her ineligible under our criteria. I was sure that she had debuted at ECE 2009, but I was just flat wrong, and that was my fault for not double-checking with KCRW before publishing the poll.
As you point out, though, the Earth did not fall off its axis due to this journalism fail.
And you are an expert on RMRG because?

this is a stupid argument
Regardless of how long Whippety Pow has been skating at home this was her WFTDA tournament season debut. And not only was she a rookie in the sense that she may have been skating for a season or two at home but was new to the nationally competitive scene, but she competed at nationals against girls who have been nationally known for years and have been to nationals one or more times. so yes, as far as WFTDA is concerned, she is a rookie.
BTW how did the WFTDA decide their MVPs? was it an arbitrary choice someone made, was it based on stats, or what? Just wondering...
Teams voted

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the teams who were in the final four voted.
That is correct
DRD was asked to pick an MVP for RMRG and we picked Whipity. Go Whipity!
Right
So yea ......the Mile High Club skaters were asked who they thought was the MVP for RMRG during the 3rd/4th place game at nationals. We pretty much all agreed that Whipity was the MVP because she did awesome in that game. Just to reiterate what Double Easy had said above.

Douchey?
Asking someone who joined DNN just to post lies about Whipity under an anonymous name to mind her own business is rude?
oook.
By removing my post it looks like I wrote some kind of crazy offensive foul-mouthed thing.
I have seen much worse on this board.
Just sayin',
Frida
yeah you're a real potty mouth
now go skate a 5 minute jam, alright?
Douchey.....WOW!!!
Thanks Dangerous for having some info. That was helpful but...... And to who ever said Douchey that was very immature. Just not what I saw on the RMRG website. Not Cool to call names to a Skater who is NOT under an anoymous Derby Name just Asking Questions. I mean I can see sticking up for a Player but come on we are Adults so let's show some class..
Let's call it good.
What you saw on the RMRG site is WP's league award, nothing more. As mentioned above, she was not on RMRG's A-squad until this calendar year. We truly hope she wins the DNN honor, but will congratulate anyone who does.
I respect that it was unclear to you and that we can't know how every league is structured and that it likely appeared to you, because of her league rookie award, that she did not qualify. I don't believe anyone used the word to describe your questioning of WP's status. When DNN deletes a comment, the replacement text refers to DNN's code of conduct, which reads simply enough "Don't be a douchebag," thus the "Douchey" subject line that followed. It was *not* directed to you.
Now that things are clarified, I think we can let it drop. (Please?)
I am concerned at this point that posters are deliberately misunderstanding one another or not clearly communicating intent.
Be well, themama. Take care.

Best Bout
I know there were a couple of last second, 1 point wins this season, but I just want to say that there was only one game where a team made back a 30 point deficit to tie the game in the last 3:30 of the bout, and then executed a perfect two jammer strategy in the over time jam with a star pass to win.
Vote Brewcity v Burning River for best bout of 2009!
Oh yeah, I'm outraged I tell you!
That WAS a great bout
That WAS a great bout although i wrote in Madison v. Detroit from the same day at regionals. I think the real outrage was that my regionals roommate Gloria kept getting these great bouts to call ((like Brewcity v. Burning River)) and our down the hall neighbor Val kept getting all these great bouts to call ((like Madison v. Detroit)) and my bouts to call always wound up being, uh, comparatively un-classic. It was sort of like on the Peanuts Halloween special... "I got a cupcake!" "I got an apple!" "I got a rock." Of course, it's an honor just to get a rock!
I really want to vote for a North Central Regional bout...
...because I'm affiliated with the host league, and we had several great bouts. -But I gotta say that the Gotham-Philly Eastern Regional Championship was the single best bout in the history of WFTDA. It was back and forth the whole way with a heart-stopping, 2-minute final jam that saw 4 lead changes. Unbelievable.
Very cool! Thanks for
Very cool! Thanks for recognizing the brilliance of Charlie Chu and Stalkerazzi. We at LADD are very lucky to have them and hopefully, Rose City will get a taste of Charlie when he moves out to Portland soon (and by taste, we do mean that he likes to be licked. Repeatedly.).
Ballot box stuffing
Yes, we can tell when you do that. *wags finger*
Please look inside your heart to guide you on whether that's OK or not. In the event there is no answer in your heart, please refer to the site code of conduct.
Hey I think I just voted twice.
Is there a way for you to nix that on your end?
Voting twice
We're already up to 700 unique votes, which is pretty awesome. You'll note I said "unique" though.
Accidentally voting twice = fine
Letting somebody else vote on your computer = fine
Telling your friends / fans to go vote for you = fine
Repeatedly casting the same vote for only one category over and over and over and over again = not so fine. We can tell when it's all coming from the same computer, so don't do that, please.
Thanks!

i didn't see the write in for underated player, so my two ballots are incomplete and nothing voted for twice. you can trust a ref not to cheat, right?
Jason Bechtel & Jeff Sevier
I gotta say that I CAN NOT BELIEVE that you overlooked Jason Bechtel and Jeff Sevier in your nominees for best photographers. Honestly. I can't begin to count the number of their photos you guys have used on this site alone--not to mention their photos in FiveOnFive, and about a zillion flyers, websites, Facebook pages, etc.
These are two of the best and most prolific photogs in derby and it saddens me to no end that they were missed. I realize some things will be innocently overlooked (I've done it, too) but these two should be near the top of any photog list.
Hopefully, the good people of derby will remember them for a write-in.

Jeff Sevier: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffsevier/collections/
i agree, both jason & jeff are very talented.
so it was really hard to pick just 8 photographers from the pool of the many talented photographers we are fortunate to have shooting derby. i had both jeff and jason on my initial list along with about 5 others, so i assure you they were not overlooked.

Thank you DNN for the nomination! I can't say how absolutely unexpected this is, this is stiff competition and the bar just keeps rising. Thanks for letting me be on the ballot next to such derby superstars!

That is so great! Does your mom live here in NC or in the frozen tundra? I look forward to seeing her here in April! CRG loves their fans! Glad that we can bring an event that all ages appreciate.

Mom
She lives in Carrboro, moved down from the semi-thawed NY tundra about 9 years ago. She's all about CRG now - in fact, she stole my damn poster from the canned food drive.
You guys should come up here to bout sometime; just make sure it's between May and September for maximum weather enjoyment.
Cheers,

Bout of the year: Oly 157, Rose 151
You should have been there. Didn't work out how everyone (including me) might have wanted, but it was incredible to experience. Good afterparty, too.
I don't get how Rat/Oly constitutes a "rivalry." Maybe I'm missing inside info. Their A-squads didn't even play one another until Western Regionals, did they? Where's the rivalry? You mean migrations from one league city to another?
Nice year to be a roller derby fan. Thanks to all for working harder, looking sweller, and skating better than I ever would. Best to all for 2010.
Bouts that would have never occured in the wild...
I think that both the Oly v Rat and the Denver v Rocky are bouts that would have never occurred on their own in the wild... Both cases had transfer skaters who were significant members of their former teams.
I think the rivalry here is partly that they didnt; play each other, despite being so relatively close geographically.
Others in the category are North Star v Minnesota (they first met at the tournaments as well as RMRG and Denver)
Also in the potential Rivalry category, WCR v the Outfit.
ohhh, yeah.
Also in the potential Rivalry category, WCR v the Outfit.
I would LOVE to see that game!
HELL YEAH!!!
I would drive back home to the Chi for that one...no WAY would I miss that!!!
Rat/Oly
I think they're referring to the migrations. More of a personal rivalry than professional. I also think the rivalry hatchet was more or less buried (please) at regionals. It was a clean, fair, dramaless (well, as drama free as any bout can be) bout and it seems everyone's cool. I'm with you that there are bigger rivalries out there.
Oly V. Rose
Swag, you're right! That Oly v. Rose game was FANTASTIC. Layla Smackdown became one of my ultimate derby heroes cuz well, she laid the smack down! Tight bout, very physical, close score to the end!!!
*I quoted Swag. Why did my comment go under Randy's?*
Rookie of the Year
Couldn't Atomatrix fall here too? Her first derby game ever was held in 2009.
Same!
Same with Anya Heels, really. Both players have been nominated for MVPs, yet are rookies this year. :)
Agreed.
Leaving Atomatrix out as Rookie of the Year is a tad insane.
WFTDA MVP's
Just noticed that WFTDA posted Tournament MVP's. Congratulations to Heffer (my write in vote in DNN's poll) who got it for Oly. Great choice, as Heffer is an incredibly important member of the team, both as a jammer and a blocker. She's got to be one of the smartest jammers out there: she always seems to know where everyone one is, the best line to take and the best moment to call the jam. Maybe her glasses have a built in Heads Up Display.
I agree that Atomatrix really should be in the Rookie of the Year category, as her first ever derby bout was 1/18/09 as a Prima, and first sanctioned bout was 3/21/09 as a Cosa.
Congrats also to Rice Rocket, Gaby “Fonda Pain” Begeman and Wipity Pow.
Kandy Kates for most underrated
please please please vote Kandy Kates from Gotham for most underrated! I have seen soooo many gotham videos and its difficult to see just how awesome that she is because she is so consistently good and she plays for Gotham, a team that has sooooo many incredible blockers that I think she is very overlooked. She is definetly one of the best offensive/defensive(at the same time) players that I have ever seen. Kandy Kates GGRD!
Thank you so much!
for thinking of me! And thank you for the compliments. :)
I'm honored to be seen as a useful player by others, as well as by my teammates.
A player is only as good as the strength of the whole. Teamwork is key.
Thank you again,
Kakes
kandy kates is my hero
no problem! I meant every word of it, I would be honored to have you on my team. I totally agree, teamwork is so important. The teams that win big are the ones that stick together and don't let the team that they are bouting seperate them, you seriously are my hero!
derby love
adderoller:)
photographers
I would love to add Kerry McClain. I love his images.
Kerry McClain
Yes, I believe he is my favourite derby photographer that consistently shoots great photos with the trademarked blue tinge. Another photographer worth mentioning is Nicolas Charest from B.C. Heck Gil from windy city, Colin from Detroit... They're all great photographers in their own right...
aaaah..... too many... can't choose!
Thank you for the nomination,
Thank you for the nomination, and congrats to my fellow nominees.
I can't wait for next year.
Best Refs?
I think that there should be a category for best refs! They deserve a shout out. Us skaters get the glory, we should share a little with them.
Also, It is hard to decide on an MVP because there are so many awesome skaters nominated.
best ref
I totally agree! I think they should get some credit, this game would not be possible without them. My vote would definetly have to be Mr. Rauk, he has quite the hawkeye.
Another Ref Catergory
The most annoying ref on a yahoo group/message board.
That'd be a tough category...
The most annoying ref on a yahoo group/message board.
I can't imagine who the second nominee might be.
Worst Ref?
Worst ref would be more fun, but cruel and unusual. Nah, the refs are a unit that wears black and white for a reason. They're not supposed to get the recognition. They're getting more professional, more anonymous. Besides it wouldn't be best ref, it would be favorite ref in reality.
Don't worry...
HELLARAD will be indulging all your "worst ref" fantasies soon enough...

Blank white page
Unfortunately, the way the embed works, when you finish the poll it actually does show you a confirmation and thank you image ... BUT you have to scroll up to the top of the embed to see it, which is not at all intuitive. Sorry about that! This Google form was really easy to throw together, but we might look into something a little more integrated with DNN the next time we do a huge poll like this.
Oly/Gotham
Geographical distance may keep these two teams from bouting regularly, however, their nationals bout appeared to be the most fiercely contested, particularly in the blocking pack play. Gotham hung with Oly more closely in play on the track than other teams this year (with the possible exception of Oly's bouts with Rose and Denver earlier in the year-but Oly has improved leaps and bounds since those bouts.) If the nucleus of each team remains relatively intact for the next couple of years, any future bouts could become a very intriguing rivalry.
Wow weewow wow
Thanks, Derby Nation, for the nomination! I can honestly say I've been smiling with pure joy all day today after hearing the news! This, to me, is the perfect way to round out my year...the nomination alone, as cheeseball as it may sound, is something I am very proud of. To be on the same list as the rest of those guys? Mad props and PBR
In any Best Of list, there's always going to be someone or something that people strongly feel should be included and this list is no different. HOWEVER...the staff of DNN should be given mad props and PBR for not playing it safe and trying something new.

Juke Boxx
DNN has been terrific - thanks for all you've done!
Pat yourselves on the back. Oh, and get some sleep! What you've done this season surpasses anything I could have imagined.
As one of handful of announcers on that list that's been traveling with the sport since it moved outta the Southwest, I'm honored we, as a group, have been recognized. Everyone on that list is top-notch and others are just as deserving. The core has pushed it up a notch and I really feel, overall, announcing has taken leaps the last two years.
Years of observation, studying stats, watching strategy in prep for bouts took me right into coaching last year (I taught Juke Boxx everything she knows). Kool-Aid, another old school and fantastic announcer, took Texas to the National Championship bout, and the chatter only indicates more will do the same. Many of us are more entrenched than would be expected. In Madison, I've not been on mic for 18 months. Well, except for being interviewed on behalf of the the league-winning Vaudeville Vixens! Great moment.
Purely as a fan, casting aside comebacks, under-dogs winning, OT, standout performances, etc., the Philly/Gotham bout was the only 60 minute nail-biter I've seen at that level. Hurt and Justice are two of maybe four who have seen more bouts than I have, and I'll never forget that one. Madison/Boston has now built a nice rivalry. Last year's bout in the East we had to wait for the official score, the Nationals this year (with what may remain the sport's weirdest final jam), and are slated to play in Boston this summer.
OK, I didn't teach Juke Boxx much. I believe I said, put that helmet panty with the star on your head and just pass people. Seeing her up close all year, she's the best all-around player and teammate I've ever seen as a rookie, though I'm obviously biased. We love her to death.
Sorry Corndog, you are one of Denise Lightning's favorite announcers, but I know who the favorite is! Miss ya DL.

Poll results delayed a day...
...ok, we've now realized it was WAY too optimistic to post the poll results the day after the poll closed. With just shy of 4,000 votes recorded, we have to do a surprisingly large amount of poring through the final spreadsheet to get this right, especially because we totally failed to take into account that having a write-in box for every category means a whole lot of manual counting.
Also, boo to the couple of jokers who voted 300+ times in a row for the same person in the same category. This isn't Florida, you know. We're going to throw out the incredibly obvious ballot box stuffing, but in every case where there's even in the slightest possibility that a vote was not an intentional mass duplicate, we'll count it.
Anyway, we're hoping to have this project completed by Wednesday at noon. Sorry for the delay. We are very much aware that this is an outrage.
Dammit, Feelgood!
You just stomped on our best and/or only line.
It's like you know us.

I'm checking in here like every half hour. Bored at work. Oh well.
Good use of those Twitter feeds
Maybe the boys could send out a tweet to the most appropriate Twitter feed to let everyone know when the results are up.
Wouldn't hurt, right?
Methinks
Is this just a reeeeeeally clever way of getting us all to donate more money? "Oh, if only we could afford to hire a bean-counter, you would have gotten your poll results by now..."
