Rat City’s Sockit Wenches in Double Header Challenge at Gotham

  • Gotham Girls Battle With Seattle

NEW YORK, NY -- Two local teams from the #2 Gotham Girls Roller Derby wrap up their 2009 season with a unique doubleheader on Saturday night October 24 as both take on the visiting Sockit Wenches from Seattle’s #10 Rat City Rollergirls.

While GGRD’s Manhattan Mayhem and Bronx Gridlock cool their wheels and wait to compete in Gotham’s November finals, the Brooklyn Bombshells and Queens of Pain have invited the Rat City girls across the country for the back-to-back challenge.

Queens and Brooklyn are suiting up twelve players each, while the Sockit Wenches will be choosing rosters for each 40-minute matchup from a larger traveling pool of 20.

This bout will be presented on DNN in a live video and text boutcast. Join Bone Crawford and Li'l Red Terror for coverage starting at 8:30pm Eastern on Saturday, October 24.

Big derby names will be everywhere on the track. The Sockit Wenches feature some of the most experienced names in flat track roller derby, including Rat City All-Stars Juliet Bravo, Wile E. Peyote, Rebel Belle, Anya Heels, and X-Khan. The bouts will also feature a special farewell performance in a Rat City uniform from longtime Sockit Wench and legendary jammer Fortune (formerly known as Miss Fortune), who’s recently moved to Philadelphia from the Seattle area.

The Sockit Wenches finished the Rat City 2009 local season in May in second place with a record of 2-2. They’ll get to use the Gotham bouts to test drive some of their latest additions, including transfer skaters Jalapeño Business and Clara Plegic and newcomer Penni Vidi Vici. Unable to make the trip was Sarah Impalin’, who started 2009 as a rookie on Gotham’s Queens of Pain before relocating to Seattle and becoming a Sockit Wench in September.

This will be the final ’09 bout for both Gotham squads. The Bombshells (1-2 in 2009) are fresh off a September victory over the Queens of Pain (0-3).

Brooklyn features six rookies and transfers, including the irrepressible Montreal transplant OMG WTF and the experienced Boston transfer Evilicious. The Queens of Pain (0-3 in 2009) failed to score a victory in the GGRD home season, but feature some of the league’s most exciting All-Stars as well as a promising posse of rookies: Steel Magnolia, Knockturn Ali, and Anaïs Ninja. Queens also gained some interleague experience in ’09, losing a May challenge from Philly’s Broad Street Butchers.

Those tuning in to the live DNN video cast will spy many of GGRD’s All Star weapons as they tune up their skills prior to November’s Nationals. Suzy Hotrod, Ana Bollocks, Donna Matrix, and Hyper Lynx all hone their All-Star games with the Queens skaters in black, while Brooklyn boasts All-Stars Papierschnitt, Barbara Ambush, Hard Anya, Hela Skelter, and Raggedy Animal.

The internet videocast will be the first live derby video streamed from Hunter College, Gotham’s raucous home venue. At this writing, only a handful of tickets are left; those shut out should be able to enjoy one of the most ambitious four-camera productions of live broadcast roller derby to date.

Brooklyn Bombshells!

You forgot All-Star skater Hela Skelter for the Brooklyn Bombshells! BOOOH-YAH! Everyone at Gotham is really excited for the showdown! But tonight we welcome the sockit wenches with mechanical bulls!

xo, OMG

fixed.

I'm told that Sock Puppet feels just awful about it.

Go Gotham

We're super excited to host you Rat City!

IS this the first ever home team bout televised on DNN?

Happy to see DNN showcase great home teams. Go Wenches!

Go Skater Sister!

I'll rooting for the Bombshells and my Original Skater Sister, miss Evilicious! RUINATION.

FFEEEEEEEEEV'S

And all of Baltimore...

...better be in front of a glowy screen shouting for Nasty Trick! SO excited!!!

yep yep

Fer shure.

video archive of Gotham/Rat?

I'd really like to watch this double header. Is there a way to access the video on Justin.tv or elsewhere?

Viewing Video

Go to justin.tv and search for "derby news network." Click on any video that pops up. Under the video screen on the next page there is a link to "archives." Watch video from October 24. There were some problems with the streaming, so you get the 2nd half of the Wench v Brooklyn game and most of the Queens v Wench game.

Thank you DNN and Gotham Girls. We had an awesome time! Ladies and gents, Gotham has an amazing crowd--powerful, knowledgable, intimidating. Just like the skaters! You ladies are awesome. It was a great experience!

more/better to come

We understand that Steel Magnolia (Gotham's video ace) is uploading full recordings of both bouts. We'll point y'all to 'em as soon as they're up!

Thanks to everyone for your patience with the very frustrating it's-up-now-it's-down-again video stream experience this weekend. We're continuing to build out our capabilities from location to location in a very organic manner, which means that sometimes it's gonna be a bumpy ride -- we could've made this a private test, but we'd rather put up an attempt even if we're not sure it's going to work perfectly.

The good news - we've got proof of concept on streaming from Hunter College, and we have a pretty good idea which problems need solving. We feel really good about the prospect of streaming video for future Gotham bouts!

Some video better than no video!

I agree with your thinking on that. It was nice to read through the textcast too and see who was watching/commenting from home! Thanks again for recording and broadcasting. -Jalapeno Business

i agree!

some video is much better than none.
so thank you both DNN & Gotham for that FANNNNNTASTIC bout!
