Baltimore and Tucson Men's Teams Battle In Denver

DENVER, CO -- Three-year-old Baltimore men's team Harm City Homicide ends its busiest season yet with its longest trip to date, traveling out to Denver to take on first-year Tucson Dry Heat Militia in a full-length bout. It's the opener of a doubleheader hosted by the Denver Roller Dolls; in the second bout, local teams Bad Apples and Shotgun Betties face off for the hometown championship. The bout takes place at the Fillmore Auditorium at 7pm on Saturday, October 24.

In terms of men's national play, this bout is particularly notable for the distance between the two home teams -- with the exception of Washington State's Puget Sound Derby Outcasts coming out to New England to play Pioneer Valley and Connecticut in August of this year, almost all men's bouts thus far have been between teams within driving distance of each other.

After going winless for almost the entirety of 2007 and 2008, the Homicide has experienced much more success in 2009. They kicked things off in January by dominating the Connecticut Death Quads 145-29 in 40 minutes, eked out a 90-86 win over the Diamond City Death Kings in April, and finally knocked off longtime rivals Pioneer Valley Dirty Dozen 77-60 in August. Homicide has only lost this year to the still-undefeated New York Shock Exchange -- 106-64 in June and just last weekend in a 20-minute exhibition bout at Charm City's local championship, where they jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold on and fell 56-35.

Most of the Homicide's members also played in a full-length bout at the WFTDA Eastern Regionals, where they teamed up with members of Pioneer Valley as the Dirty Homicide to take on the New York Shock Exchange and Connecticut Death Quads playing as the Death Shock -- the Death Shock won a tight one there, 94-83.

Tucson's Dry Heat Militia is fairly new to the men's derby scene, and has only one public bout to their name, a big 178-19 pounding at the hands of the Dallas Deception in March of this year. Three Homicide members -- Justice Feelgood Marshall, Sin Diesel and Gearhead -- helped fill out the Militia roster in that bout.

While Harm City comes into this bout with a great deal more bouting experience, they also will be fielding an extremely short roster in a city known for wreaking havoc on endurance. Homicide brings only 7 players to the party, including a new addition in Quad Almighty, the current bench coach of the Cincinnati Rollergirls and a transfer from the now-inactive Midwest Men's Roller Derby. The Dry Heat Militia, for their part, will have 12 skaters on their roster, giving them a potential endurance advantage as the bout goes on.

I'm really glad that Quad is skating for Harm in this one, he's a great coach and skater. Had a blast working with him and Hannah Barbaric at the Quad Skate/Terminal Sickness bout.

Good luck to all, more man derby!

Looking forward to it!

I haven't had a chance to see men's derby yet, so I'm really glad both teams were willing and able to make the trip up here to Denver. We'll put on a good show for you!

7 dudes, 60 min, and high altitude.

Have fun with that! Good luck to the Homicide. Wish I could be there to hold your hair back while you're puking! ;)

you left out

*sea level* dudes. Well, and Quad, but Cincinnati's not a whole lot higher.

WHAT??!?

We have a game this weekend?
Shit!
We better start practicing.

Go Homicide!!!

I'll be rooting for you from Portland! Will this bout be available live on DNN?

~Demon

Signs point to yes on coverage...

No video unfortunately, but it is looking very likely that there will be a liveblog happening. Stay tuned...

Go Homicide!!

7 SEXY dudes, 60 AWESOME min, and high altitude SCHMALTITUDE.

First of all 7 is my lucky number. Second of all, I fear no one, including Father Time and Mother Nature. Pfft. Death by Derby! :P Our Kung Fu is mighty!

Holy Dry-Harm-Heat-icide, this is gonna be GREAT! Woo-Hoo!

Little Help here

It would seem that we Dry Heat Boys are short a few fans........?

little help!

go fred nutz!

Hey!

Denver is where we make our fans, Mr. Awesome. I think an important goal to that end would be "not losing by 160 points." I think we will accomplish at least that much.

Ha, I see your expectations-lowering...

...and I raise you a "Homicide hopes to leave Denver with 3 or more of its members still alive."

I'll see your death wish ...

... and raise you a "Spill the water cooler all over the floor again."

"Still alive"

That's more about the after party than the bout, right?

Cool stuff!

Mens derby exploring uncharted regions!! I like it!!
Quad on Harm City...!!?? I guess thats cool if he wants to make the commute!! j/k Wishing everyone the best and will be waiting on the boutcast/score!! Oh and once again, Mr Almighty rocks!! soo, seXY it hurts...

Have Quad, will travel

Quad's becoming nearly as much of a derby-man-whore as you, Rink!

Skipping B-day for Men's bout

So this weekend is my 30th birthday kinda of a hard realization. BUT I am totally skipping out on Birthday plans to attend the Harm vs. Heat bout this weekend here in Denver. Not to mention it is also my home team the Shotgun Betties playing. =)

Can't wait to see Quad in action!

Quad in Action...

Seriously, I'm an arrogant bastard and totally full of myself, but I'm mostly a blocker and really not all that exciting to watch. Now JFM and Slim and Pitchit and Smoke: those dudes are the bomb. You should pay attention to those guys. Nothing to see here. Move along. These are not the droids you're looking for...

Of Course

I am just very excited in general to see you all skate! Should be a very good time. There is no place like skating at the Fillmore, great atomsphere!

Good luck boys. :-)

Good luck boys. :-) Try not to pass out Mr. Awesome

Good Luck

Good Luck Militia!
Wish I was there!

Mr Awesome Im excited to hear about a possible mens derby team in Denver!

Question on Quad Almighty...

Is he the one who used to skate with or against Quadzilla a few years before any of these leagues (or Puget Sound) formed? Just a hunch, based upon who you've already said about him.

I think you're thinking of...

I think you're thinking of Mark Weber aka Maximus, who skated against Quadzilla on Rollerjam a while back. He might be one of the scariest guys I have ever skated against. Quad Almighty is a good bit smaller but every bit as mighty - a super classy guy in addition to being a grade A player. We're all super stoked about the transfer to Homicide.

Thank you!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to the Denver Roller Dolls for giving us the opportunity to skate, to Tucson for making the trek out here, and to Angela Death and Friction VixXxen for being awesome bench coaches!

Seconded on all of that

I echo everything Slim said there, but I also want to take the opportunity to especially underline how awesome it was to have players as experienced as Angela and Friction on the bench. They were a huge part of reminding us what we were doing wrong, reinforcing what we were doing right, and calming and refocusing us if we got too heated. Definitely a major factor in our success that night, and we are extremely grateful to them for their help!

Ditto

THANK YOUS and Mad Love and Oodles of Respect to Angela Death, Friction Vixxxen, the Denver Roller Dolls and, of course, the Dry Heat Giant Mammoth Militia Men of Making Quad's Teeth and Bones Hurt! Ouch.

Congratulations to the SHOTGUN BETTIES!

Big ups to Sin Diesel who skated EVERY SINGLE JAM for sixty minutes in high altitude! (Yeah. Wow.)

And, to the Homicide: you guys stink, but you're damn fun to skate with... LOL. Thanks for making me a part of your team.

I'M AT THE PIZZA HUT! I'M AT THE TACO BELL!

Denver is Amazing!

I want to fourth the thanks to Angela Death who basically devoted five solid days to entertaining and taking care of the Homicide team - and to the rest of the Denver Roller Dolls who really gave men’s derby a great welcome. Denver is amazing! Can't want to see the mile high club at Nationals.

And seriously....Dry Heat, what gives with the multitude of 6 foot 5 250 pound guys who hit like fricken trucks?

I'M AT THE COMBINATION PIZZA HUT AND TACO BELL!

Harm City Rocked it!

Thanks guys but really it was my pleasure! You made me so proud!
Everybody is so grateful that both teams made the trek all the way to Denver, for the love of derby and completely at your own expense and we were happy to be able to spread the good word of men's derby to our fans!

Pleasure

Was so much fun to watch and such a pleasure to boutcast for you all. Hope you all enjoyed skating at the Fillmore.

Thanks!

I would like to thank everyone involved with making it possible to expose the Denver Roller Doll fans to mens roller derby. We had a GREAT time!
Pretty impressive display by the Harm City Ironmen.

I forgot to mention...

Having your team line-up announced by Dump Truck borders on orgasmic!

Just sayin'

Congrats Homocide!

Are we going to see a recap?

homocide

lol - that never gets old.

Not sure if there's video...

because Justice leapt, nay flew, about 7 feet on turn 3 on the inside to cut (legally) a few of the Dry Heat blockers. It was awesome sauce. Lots of oohs and ahhs from the crowd and a few shocked looks on the faces of Homicide and Heat players alike.

The jump video

Much to the pleasure of my inner narcissist, it so happened that the Militia had somebody shooting video from their bench and got pretty much the perfect angle on that jump:

aww

I love Sin's little gun show after you land!

Legality.

Man, that was super rad. I do have to question the legality of engaging another player while airborne. Still, super rad.

So I said to myself.

Self, It looks to be clean.
