North Central Regionals Preview
ST. PAUL, MN -- The four weeks of WFTDA Regionals continue up North this Friday, September 18, as the Minnesota Rollergirls host the second event in the cycle, the North Central tournament -- a/k/a the Brawl of America.
After years of a binary East / West structure, WFTDA has split into four regions, meaning it'll take four tournaments to determine who goes to November's Nationals this year. 10 teams from each region will go to the tourneys this year, as opposed to the 12 from last year. In another change from previous years, only the top three will advance to Nationals -- in 2007 and 2008, the final four from each region went. This has the effect of making the third place bout much more meaningful, as only the winner will get a trip to the final showdown in Philly.
In this ten-team structure, the 7 through 10 seeds will have to play an extra bout at the beginning. The winners of those bouts proceed to the eight-team quarterfinals. Only the teams that win in the quarterfinals and advance to the final four remain alive for a possible Nationals slot -- the teams that advance to their regional championship bout are guaranteed to go, while the teams that lose in the final four get one more chance in the third-place game. While there are consolation games for all teams to determine a comprehensive 1-10 by the end of the tournament, any team that loses its first bout is definitely out of Nationals, and the 7-10 seeds must win their first two games to stay in the hunt.
For a visual bracket with start times and consolation games, see the official Brawl of America website. All start times in this preview are Central.
Tournament debuts for a significant number of rapidly improving teams and closely matched teams make the North Central picture particularly intriguing.

Let's do this!
Go Midwest!
Do we really need the word "central?"
Good point.
Go Midwest!
Do we really need the word "central?"
Though you should be saying "Go North?"
What always trips me up is when I'm typing out region names and I get hung up on whether to call it "East Region" or "Eastern Region" (or even eastern region as it's an adjective instead of a proper noun).
The only thing I hate worse than writing incorrectly is not knowing if I'm writing incorrectly. Maddening.
WCR Roster? Inquiring minds wanna know.
Does WCR have the most tenured roster in derby? I swear I've seen nearly that same line-up for years now! :) Impressive and dangerous, indeed.
Also, must make filling out paperwork a breeze.
i don't know about most
i don't know about most tenured, but...
3 skaters repped WCR since the 2006 Dust Devil
8 that will be playing in their 3rd regional tourney
4 that are skating in their 2nd
5 tourney noobs
new to our charter (and missing from the post) is Amy NoNamey - she will be making her debut for the All-Stars after an impressive rookie season with her home team.
Word!
Amy NoNamey.
Love the name.
Thanks for the fun stats! I knew you all looked familiar. ;)
Love it!
Amy NoNamey! Perfect name!
All the way
I will be cheering for WCR all the way through Nationals!!!!

Bench Coach
I've got it all memorized...
Also, must make filling out paperwork a breeze.
Yes.
For sure.
But the flip side of it is that I give Malice and Varla a bad case of the stink-eye whenever they think about changing it. "A new real name to learn? A new number? A new emergency contact?!?!? Another WFTDA patch? Fine, fine, fine!"
xo,
Loco
Yikes!
I wish I could make it to this tournament! Detroit and Madison are some of my favorite leagues, and I had a blast watching Brewcity and Burning River at ECE. Lots of dynamic play and fun times from those ladies!
Can't wait!!!! Thanks DNN
Can't wait!!!! Thanks DNN for bringing this to us! <3
Go Detroit!
That's all. :)
Ditto that. I wanna see
Ditto that. I wanna see those Detroit ladies skate at Nationals! :D
Video Feed?
Will we be getting video feed from DNN as well as the B2TV feed mentioned on the BoA website?
I'd like to know so I can have my 'puter set up for video before the morrow if the B2TV feed is where we're going.
I like the text boutcasts when I'm sitting down, but when I'm roaming I like to hear the announcers - it takes me back to my days of listening to Jack Buck. Derby announcers have personality!
I'm going crazy looking forward to the 2nd weekend of Derby awesomeness!
cheers
We're at the Roy right now...
... trying to get a final answer on those details, which we might not actually know until approximately 10:50am tomorrow. Derby is derby, after all. But rest assured that your coverage will be happening one way or the other!
B2TV
It's all over the B2TV site: http://www.b2tv.com/upcoming_events.asp
Check the website in the morning.
There's a link on the Brawl website re: the feed. Yes, we've a different contract with B2 that provides some great video with some restrictions. There are also instructions on how to set up your Mac to properly get the feed (including Snow Leopard workarounds.)

Linux
Thanks for the heads-up Mr. Killer.
For people who are running a Linux system and don't already know how to get their web video on they can use the mplayer plugin for mozilla which can be found at at:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayerplug-in/
You'll also need to install mplayer which, depending on your setup, can be found here:

Since there isn't any video up I haven't been able to check that there isn't more that needs to be done, but I'll shoot in a reply to this thread if anything comes up that I can do something about.
Oh sweet derby
only 3 hours away
lunch will see me through
until the end of the day.

Do we have to pay to view?
I'm guessing one of the restrictions is that you need to be on one of their cable modems IP addresses to watch video there for free?
Because when I tried getting on a local hockey game there, it asked me for $7. Hmmm... maybe for finals, but I'm kinda broke!
It's free. We paid the extra
It's free. We paid the extra dough to make it so for y'all. Enjoy.
local teams
I'm confused. It's playing a bout between 2 home teams and it took me like 10mnutes to realize it.
$9
It's telling me I have to pay $9.
(edit) Nevermind, b2cabletv.com or brawlofamerica.com if anyone sees the same thing I did.
Thanks!
I didn't know that at the time I posted that. I'd assumed there was some kind of thing where people on their cable system had to pay and everyone else didn't.
It was very cool of y'all to make it free for us!
oh snap!
I just realized there is derby to watch today! Hope the video situ gets worked out.
In addition...way to go DNN. Instead of asking the media to cover our tournaments this year....you have become the media. Can anyone say...the revolution WILL be televised?
Jawbreaker skating for North Star?
When did she transfer to North Star?
i'm getting the same thing...
i'm getting the same thing as holly gohardly, coverage from the garda belts vs. bombshells. at least this link isn't asking me for $9 though!
hopefully it'll come through soon because work is boring today! hahah. ;)
Wow! So frustrating to be
Wow! So frustrating to be reading one thing and seeing something else.
Direct Feed
If you prefer watching the video in a dedicated player and not in your browser, the direct feed link is:

I'm on a Mac and Quicktime with Flip4Mac is working brilliantly.
re: direct feed
This was working perfectly on my mac, but I lost sound. does it reload automatically?
re: sound
I left and returned and was without sound. I believe they are working on fixing it. To quote Justice Feelgood Marshall from the live boutcast, "Should be back up when somebody flips a doohickey on a thingamajig."
