WFTDA Preview: North Star @ #19 Madison

MADISON, WI -- Back in the very early history of the flat-track derby resurgence -- that is, before national tournaments, national rankings, or even the name "WFTDA" -- many newbies to roller derby could barely be faulted for wondering whether the game was a flash-in-the-pan guilty pleasure, or a legitimate beacon to the future. Most of today's fans can recall the bout they saw that solidified their impression as the second. For many of Madison's longtime fans, it was the Dairyland Dolls’ 2005 contest against the Minnesota Rollergirls at the Duckpond, Madison’s minor league baseball park, that cinched the deal.

This bout will be covered live on DNN in a combination text and audio boutcast.

A rain delayed, track-mopping – heck, track-lifting - flag-parachuting, giant inflatable duck of an extravaganza of a mess was just so, well . . . ballsy. Rollergirls representing every league in the Midwest came. Those who set up the track just groan at the memory, but in any terms, it was a night to remember. That night, the Dairyland Dolls literally broke the scoreboard in a rout of the Minnesota Rollergirls. This Saturday, August 22, The Twin Cities’ other team, the Northstar Rollergirls Supernovas, make their way to Madison for Duckpond II.

For both teams, the Duckpond bout is the final competition heading into Brawl of America in a month’s time. The Supernovas would like nothing better than to avenge the loss of four years ago on behalf of their home city, while Madison looks to assert their position in the rankings in search of a berth at WFTDA Nationals. Currently Madison is officially #3 in the North Central region behind Windy City and Detroit, and unofficially sits at #19 in the nation via the DNN rankings.

The Dairyland Dolls field a veteran team, led by the charge of jammers Jewels of Denile and the fleet-footed rookie Juke Boxx. Guilty of a loose pack in the past, the Dolls have demonstrated defense grit in all their bouts this season, most recently against Arch Rival in a 109-74 win.

The Northstar Supernovas are a bit of an unknown on the WFTDA interleague scene, but they were working on an impressive 7 game winning streak against area competition before being barely edged out by Brewcity 92-91 in June. 3 of those wins were sanctioned bouts against lowly-ranked WFTDA teams in Sioux Falls, Omaha and Ohio.

Last year, North Star managed to knock off their big sisters Minnesota in a non-regulation bout during the November 2008 Rolling On the River tournament hosted by Sioux City, though that story was somewhat buried by the WFTDA Nationals occurring the following weekend. This year, the Supernovas have managed to make their way into the North Central Regionals as the eight seed. Adding to the unknown is the addition of Minnesota Rollergirl and Team Awesome stalwart Jawbreaker, who transferred earlier this summer.

With Windy City idle this weekend, expect other leagues to be out in force. The night promises to be more than just derby. In the August dusk and under the ball park lights, it will be an event.

The Madison Mallards and Keva Sports Center are exclusive sponsors for this event. Current forecast calls for a clear night in the mid-60s, but if Saturday night is a rain-out, a sanctioned bout open to the public will be held at the Duckpond on Sunday morning. If that’s a no-go, the teams will meet in a closed sanctioned bout at Fast Forward Skate Center Sunday afternoon.

North Star WFTDA Bouts

Can I post one little correction? The North Star Supernovas have indeed had three consecutive wins in WFTDA sanctioned bouts, but the first one was against Sioux Falls, not Sioux City (Sioux City is not a WFTDA league, but we played them in the Rolling Along the River tournament in November 2008).

We're new to WFTDA and are very excited for this tournament season to prove we belong in the top 10 (hopefully top 5!) in our region.

Gonna be a great night!

I tell ya, I'm fired up for this. I'm excited to work the Webcast tomorrow night in an environment that is so cool. Let's hope for great weather! Madison did this once before and though we got the bout in, the rain and humidity made for horrible derby. I have it blogged (photos were beautiful) at www.myspace.com/derbybob if you want to know what the atmosphere is like. Dig through the blogs and it'll be down a few.

I love the Northstars. I have coached against one team, called a bout at Stateline where one travel team was the visitor, have run into skaters at various events, and they are a class act. Terrific bunch of women. I'm happy for their success and entrance into WFTDA. This will be my first look at their tournament lineup, which is exciting.

Granted, we've seen high profile players move to different leagues and the impact has varied, but adding the athleticism of Jaw Breaker to an already legitimate Northstars squad is something I'm excited to see. No team competes on the basis of one player. Nobody will ever convince me of that. But JB is a true athlete that is dangerous in numerous roles. I love to watch her play. If the chemistry fits, she has the talent to raise them above their rank.

Saucer's recap nails the "new look" Dolls. Solid, solid pack play. A trait that MRD was built upon but struggled with, at times, in the last two seasons. I won't argue that they aren't a veteran team, however I think many are in for a surprise when a few newer names hit the floor. The depth of the squad may be at its finest, this is the best lineup, on paper, I've seen them field this year, the chemistry is there, and, for the first time, you will see a coach on the sidelines. James Blond, Wildberry Punch, and their staff have done a nice job. I'm sure both teams are giving us a strong look into our upcoming trip to St. Paul next month and it looks like it should be one helluva night.

Thank you Madison!

Thank you to the Madison crew for having us and a huge thanks to Grace Killy from Brewcity and Gnosis for textcasting the bout. The track was ummm....interesting in its waterbed-like qualities but I still had a great time and the after party was a blast. Who knew Mouse was such a great aerobics instructor? Thanks again. We'll see you all at the Brawl!

Actually..

I have to give credit where its due- the aerobics routine was a tribute to Princess America, my dance party hero.

Thank you Mickey, Medusa, JB, and all the North Star skaters, crew, and fans, for rolling with the punches and bringing a super fun bout to Madison! Also thanks to the folks from MNRG, Brew City, Windy City, and all over to show their support or help out in some way!

True, it was a bumpy road to travel (see in Papa Razzi's pics)

-but both teams took to the challenge, and the fans got their admission's worth and some!
Our amazing crew worked tirelessly all day to fix the situation as much as could be fixed, and we can't thank them enough!!!

See you in September!

Floor?

Was that Sportcourt laid down directly on turf or lane? I can bet that was crazy to skate on!

The only worse one I've seen is one venue that laid out a brand new Sportcourt directly on top of carpet. UGH.

There was a layer of

There was a layer of particle board underneath, but it seemed pretty warped. Dunno if the sheets were that way to begin with or if it was the ground moisture. I can't think of a flatter, more manicured lawn than a pro baseball field, but a field of grass is quite wet even when it's dry. And water-proof plywood is $#@! expensive.

Particle Board

There's a few leagues around here who use soccer centers for their bouts, so they lay down a layer of good particle board on the turf before putting the sport court down. That works very well!

I agree the ky is to get good quality particle board. One of the leagues actually has a deal with a local construction company to always have quality board, so it might be a good option for the Sponsorship committee of the league to look in to if they're going to continue using that venue.

OSB

We use OSB board at our arena in Baltimore. The field is a 10 year old astro turf that is pretty padded. We lay down the (I think) 6'x9' sheets of OSB, hammer them together for a tight fit, and then put down the sport court on top. We are so lucky to have our venue which allows us to store all of the flooring right in the building.

We did look at the possibility of setting up our sport court at Virgin Fest last year. The only way we could see it happening to assure no moisture would get on the board was to lay down a layer of tarps to create a barrier between the OSB and the field. We also would have needed a tent to cover the whole thing because if it had rained......oh boy.

That's exactly what happened

That's exactly what happened the first time MRD did this - and MNRG was game to play on! See Bob's photo blog link above to see what derby in the rain looks like.

Bob's Blog

Wow, so glad I hunted that post down - every time I asked one of the veterans about it in the days leading up to this year's Duck Pond bout, their eyes would just glaze over & their voices would trail off.

Well worth the read.
