WFTDA Preview: #17 Rocky Mountain @ Sacred City

On Saturday, July 11, Denver's Rocky Mountain Rollergirls travel to Sacramento to take on the Sacred City Derby Girls in the first matchup between these two WFTDA West Region teams.

Rocky Mountain is currently ranked #8 in the region by WFTDA, while Sacred holds down the #11 spot. In DNN's national Power Rankings, Rocky Mountain sits at #17; Sacred City is unranked.  A strong performance from Sacred City would help them make the case for a national ranking.

Last month, Rocky Mountain slaughtered the Omaha Rollergirls in a 187-14 victory. Prior to that routing, Rocky Mountain suffered losses to the Boston Derby Dames by 125-87 and Team Awesome by 93-60 this season. In February, they competed in the Four Corners Feud, a tournament held in Colorado, where they eventually took fourth place after losses to Duke City,179-93, and Pikes Peak, 120-113.

Sacred City has been keeping themselves busy this season with games against teams from all over California and beyond. They've notched wins against Slaughter County Roller Vixens 148-82, Central Coast Roller Derby 103-48, and OC RollerGirls 101-80. Last month they suffered their first real loss of the season against the #7 team in the West Division, Pikes Peak 167-70.

In May they competed in The Big One, an all-California flat-track derby tournament. They were able to scratch out a close win against the L.A. Derby Dolls but lost to both the San Diego Derby Dolls and the B.ay Area Derby Girls and were not able to advance to the second round.

In the upcoming months, Sacred will be hosting top West teams like the Denver Roller Dolls and Duke City Derby and the South Central region team the Dallas Derby Devils in preparation for the WFTDA Western Regionals. While the schedule may be strenuous on the league and the travel team, it will surely give them a lot of time to work out the kinks and develop different strategies for what they hope will be their first go-around at a WFTDA tournament.
