WFTDA Preview: Maine @ Providence

PROVIDENCE, RI – On Saturday, May 9, the Maine Port Authorities (officially ranked #9 in the East region by WFTDA) take to sea and head down the New England coastline to battle the Rhode Island Riveters (WFTDA East #7) at the RI Convention Center.

The Port Authorities started this season 0-2, losing to top-ten teams in the Boston Massacre (128-24) and Charm City All-Stars (157-52).  But as any derby veteran knows, big losses can be quick teachers, so Providence may see a strong defensive front wall and quick changes in pack speed during this Saturday’s bout.

Olive Spankins and Killer Quick have traditionally been the Port Authorities’ go-to jammers, with Jacked Rabbit having also been a primary point producer in the Charm City bout. All have significant speed and able to pass on the outside. Expect to see well-timed offensive hits from blockers Lois Blow (the MVP from the Boston-Maine bout), Breezy and The Mom Bomb, as well hard hits and positional blocking from Punchy O‘Guts and Miss Creant.

The last time Maine faced Providence, in April 2008 in Portland, Maine, the Port Authorities won by 11 points in what, at the time, was a major upset -- it was Maine's first bout as a member of WFTDA and Providence was then officially ranked #14 in the nation. But that proved to be the beginning of a rough patch for Providence, as they dropped 4 of their next 5 bouts in 2008.

The Rhode Island Riveters started this year with a tough opponent in Charm City, losing 171-76, although 18 minutes into the first half, the score was tied and the Riveters held on, going into halftime with only a 35 point deficit.  Alas, Charm City’s ability to fine-tune pack speed as if it were an LP on a disc-jockey’s table along with strong positional blocking proved too much for the Riveters.

Last month saw the Riveters take on HARD’s Nuclear Knockouts, a team that has been decisively knocking out (almost) every opponent since September 2008; their only loss in that strength was to the busy Charm City a month earlier (143-62).  It was a close bout, with the lead trading hands a few times before ending up with the Riveters, who won 102-82.

Both 2009 bouts have shown the Riveters to be a stronger and tighter team than the one that skated at Eastern Regionals, perhaps proving that 2008 was indeed a rebuilding year. The 2009 roster contains the same core as 2008, which no doubt, will only get stronger as we get closer to regionals.

Craisy Dukes and Hysterica! are two of the most experienced jammers in the northeast and will likely be getting more experience tonight. Trophy Knife is a fast and very pack-aware blocker who gets where she needs to be. Lotta Pain is back, joining a crew of hard hitters in Bleeding Rainbow, Hot Sauce and Shelby Brusin’. Jetta von Diesel is a small one, but her size doesn't make her any less difficult to get around as a blocker. And the powerful blocking of relatively recent addition Kid Ace was a bright spot in the rough Eastern Regionals for PRD.

This is one of the key bouts that will help determine their seeding for regionals -- particularly for Providence, as this is the last time they play before WFTDA voting for tournament seeding begins in July. Maine has two more outings before then, taking on Dutchland and #3 Philly.

Wish I could be so many places this weekend! But especially here! Go everybody!

Maine is a very interesting

Maine is a very interesting team and they instantly gained my respect with a few impressive victories before going down to Lovely Charm and the Beans this season. Thats nothing to hang yer head about Maine. Theres a whoooole lotta teams that would get kicked in the face by the Charms and Bean City. They gotta real nice squad there up in Maine for sure. But I'm gonna be a fanboy and say that I truly believe that the Prov is gonna be on the comeback tonite and ya know that they have something to PROVe. At one time they seemed the "Little Team that Could" and I have to admit that I fell for them. I still have faith in those Prov Girls and tonite is the night that they rise up and regain their spirit. I just feel it. Yeah...I still BELIEVE in that lil team that could. Its a new season, a fresh start, a time to begin their long trek back up the ranks! I'm bleeding rainbows and pouring hot sauce on some rhode kill with a lotta pain...ya feel me??!!
Come on PROV!!!

Maine gets served.

Well, last night was amazing. We beat Maine by 52 points!!! It was the most brutal grudge match I have seen. I will say Maine put up a good fight. The Riveters have gelled as a team and played tight, smart and calmly.
Trophy Knife and Hot Sauce DOMINATED, Craisy Dukes' jamming was STELLAR and everyone worked so well together it almost brought tears to my eyes. We deserved this win and it felt good to see my team mates get it! Also, it was great to see Lotta Pain back on the track.
Thanks Biker Dave for believing in us and supporting us even when we were down.
We had heard that this game was supposed to be Maine's "easy" win this season. Whatevs.
Final Score- Providence 111, Maine 59.

thank you

to address the last bit of helen's post, i'd like to add that providence is grateful to our captains and coach for their dedication to focusing our passion for this match with tones of respect and discipline. entertaining speculative negativity fuels the fire but distracts from the goal. let us all keep our eye on the prize.

olive spankins and lois blow were both injured last nite about halfway through the first period. we share the disappointment and concern connected to any player's injury. as helen alluded to, the rest of maine's roster is to be commended for stepping up to fill those roles unexpectedly in the heat of the contest last nite. a nod to you.

yours,
dukes

Well said!

Wish I coulda watched this game on Ustream last night, it woulda been epic.

I <3 this sport.

Rev Al Mighty.

It was an amazing bout. My heart goes out to Olive Spankins & Lois Blow. There is nothing more upsetting than an unjury taking an athlete out of a game. I hope to see you both again soon. Thank you to all the Maine ladies & support staff. My favorite thing about this sport is that we can all talk smack but once the games over, the party begins. Jakked Rabbit,Punchy O'Guts & Mom Bomb are one hell of an after party trio.

I love my Riveters!!!!!

What a weekend! We approach

What a weekend! We approach every single game with respect for the other team's skills and knowing it will be a serious competitive challenge, and we knew this would be a particularly competitive and hard bout. That it was. Both teams played really well, but the Riveters certainly earned a very solid win. Congrats to them again, thank you so much to PRD for hosting us, and thanks to Dukes for being so especially thoughtful. Cheers to all.

Amazing

This was one of the most intense, well-played games I've seen! High five to both teams for being so awesome.

Great times

Awesome bout, fun to watch. Congratulations to both teams for a night of highly entertaining derby. Also mad props to PRD for a kick-ass afterparty!

Spankins and Blow, get well soon.
