Oly Upsets #12 Rose City, 157-151

OLYMPIA, WA -- The Oly Rollers, currently unranked by either WFTDA or DNN but long viewed as one of the most potentially dangerous young teams in the sport, finally made good on their promise in a big way, taking down #12 Rose City in a high-scoring, high-penalty shootout, 157-151.

Though Rose City jumped out to a 14-0 lead on the bout's first jam as Oly's jammer Atomatrix was boxed while Rose City's D. Konstructor ran wild, it was mostly Oly for the first half of the bout. They took the lead over on the bout's 4th jam, 24-23, and opened up a 30 point late in the first half. However, Rose City was able to pull it together to close the opening 30 minutes, winning the last four jams of the half 16-1 and putting the halftime score at Oly 85, Rose City 68.

High jam scores continued in the opening two jams of the second half, with both teams pulling 14 points to increase the score to Oly 98, Rose City 82. But penalty trouble began to severely retard Oly's play here, leaving them often jammerless and/or dealing with packs lopsided in Rose City's favor.

Oly was hence shut out on the following four jams, and the Portland crew took the lead back on the 6th jam of the half, as Rhea DeRange made the most of her first turn with the jammer cap, dropping a 14-0 on Oly that put Rose City back in the lead, 106-98. And after another big Rose City frame -- 11-4 on another power jam -- Rose City had their biggest lead of the bout and all the momentum at 117-102.

That advantage vanished on the next two jams, though. Oly's Atomatrix rang up a 14-2 over D. Konstructor, and then a 5-0 grand slam for Oly's Heffer got the lead back for the home team at Oly 121, Rose City 119. The following series of jams were all shutouts, but Rose City only got on the right end of one of them -- 4-0 Oly, 6-0 Oly, 6-0 Rose, 11-0 Oly and 11-0 Oly  -- and with only about five minutes left to play, Oly was enjoying a 150-125 advantage.

The penalty situation once again exploded in Oly's face here, nearly fatally. In the final three jams, 5 different Oly skaters would be ejected, and in the penultimate jam, a jammer penalty on Oly's Heffer not only opened the door for RCR's Licker N Split to get an 8-0, it also allowed Rose City to start the final jam of the night with their jammer Rhea DeRange unopposed on the jam line as Heffer waited to return.

Rose City was 17 points down going into this jam, and Rhea picked up two grand slams for 10 points and looked like she had a chance to create the last-second comeback win. But Heffer was able to play effective jammer defense upon getting released from the box, sucking crucial time off the clock before getting 4 points of her own. Rhea's 15 points were not enough to close the gap, and Oly skated away with a hard-fought, high-intensity win that immediately proved them to be a serious national contender.

Stats

[update: the following stats are official]

Atomatrix was Oly's most-used and most-effective jammer with 63 points on 14 jams. Tannibal Lector (33 points on 6 jams) and B Tease N (27 points on 4 jams) were also primary point scorers. Oly's stable was rounded out by Heffer (17 points on 9 jams), Blonde N Bitchin (13 points on 4 jams) and Sassy (4 points on 1 jam.)

Rose City's jammer attack was somewhat more balanced -- Rhea DeRange led with 35 points on just 3 big jams, while D. Konstructor was right behind with 34 points on 11 jams. Scratcher in the Eye had 23 points on 5 jams, while both Cadillac and Licker N Split contributed with 20 points on 5. Blood Clottia kicked in 16 points over 7 jams, and Sump Pump (3 points) and Axl Blows (0 points) each took the star once.

Oly spent a full half-hour longer in the penalty box than Rose City, committing 49 majors to 19 for Rose City; the minor count was somewhat less lopsided, with 79 minors for Oly against 64 for Rose City.

Rose City gets little time to rest, as this weekend they have another battle against a Washington-state team, as they take on the storied Rat City Rollergirls, currently ranked #6 by DNN. Oly has another potential statement game ahead of them, as they take on rapidly-rising #10 Denver on April 11.

What the hell are those?

Is that jammer wearing knee pads? They have to be the teeniest knee pads I have ever seen. Does anyone know the brand name?

Glad I wasn't the only one

looking at those tiny knee pads!

Nope, your not alone

I'm always distracted by what kind of gear everyone is using :)

those kneepads

I think that's one of the sisters formerly of Rat City. The sisters usually wore small kneepads. I'm not sure those pads are all that protective though.

Judging by the number on her arm

that's non-sister Tannibal Lector. (D-Bomb and Blonde 'n' Bitchin made the move from Rat City. To the best of my knowledge, Femme Fatale is not currently playing.)

JFM

I agree

I would be too chicken to bout in those. I might wear them at adult night public skate at the rink though.

That is Tannibal and those

That is Tannibal and those are inline pads. These girls don't fall much. lol World class hockey and speed skaters what do you expect?

Great write up! And when Oly does reduces it time in the box it is going to be SCARY!

I can't wait for the ROSE vs RAT bout this weekend! I will so be there.

I don't buy it.

Being an experienced skater does not mean you are incapable of getting injured. I do not wear knee pads because I fall frequently. I wear them because I can fall, period. Women are 8 times more likely to tear their ACL than men, so we need to be that much more protective of our knees. It only takes *one* bad fall or awkward landing to set you on a surgery, pt, rehab track.

Good knee pads are definitely something you have to adjust your crossovers for b/c of their bulkiness, but the trade off is worth it. blah blah blah IMO.

Lets talk about these quad hockey boots. I want a pair to practice in for a day or two!

Seconded.

I completely agree with you about safety equipment. Derby's a contact sport, and no one is immune from serious injuries. Why anyone would want to increase that risk (or aggravate pre-existing problems) by wearing inadequate gear is beyond me.

Hockey Boots

They are nice. And most are wearing meneghinis, but unless you have been wearing them since 5 and playing quad hockey, you may think they are a bit cumbersome. But you also noticed the narrowed Atom Strokers too ;) Again like hockey. They know what they like and what works for them.

missing the pac nw

Wish I was. Two of my favorite cities.

I dunno?

I think D-Bomb and Blonde and Bitchin both have had a lot of knee injuries while sportin those tiny pads.

Daddy's Girl
The Chicago Outfit

I think...

Bryce and Devon probably had knee injuries long before they started playing derby! the inline pads work fine from my perspective- we've had skaters get injuries with the big ole knee pads from pryme and triple 8 too...

This doesn't feel like...

Justice nor does it feel good. What's wrong with just reprinting the original recap? You give credit and then bone the guys recap???

Mr. Bruise is the eyes, ears and voice of the scene out here and since the mighty DNN wasn't here, technically isn't this a "reimagining"? Is this how FOX does it? I guess I should focus more on knee pads and less on how this story came to market...

No.........

No, more like the Beeb, CBC, MSNBC and CNN.

mea culpa

When this article was originally posted, we noted at the top that it had been adapted with permission from Elwood Bruise's All Bout Derby blog. We didn't repost his writing, but instead, we created a new article in DNN's "voice" using his detailed blog as a data reference.

Much to our horror, a number of people interpreted this as a criticism of Elwood's writing style -- as though we'd totally rewritten it because we thought it sucked and needed to be redone.

On behalf of everyone at DNN, let me state this in the clearest possible terms: we LOVE Elwood's writing. He writes with great passion, sharing his insights and impressions in a very clear and personal way that serves his readership extremely well. We don't think he's doing something wrong -- in fact, we'd be a little bummed if he changed a thing!

Here at DNN we're coming from a slightly different angle. Outside of the Staff Blog, we strive for a more dispassionate "reporter's voice." In particular, we try to steer our news posts clear of hot-button topics, because we feel they'd interfere with our goals. Fortunately, a number of other writers, most notably including Elwood, don't hesitate to go where we prefer not to tread, in their own venues.

What I failed to do, when I contacted Elwood for permission to rely on his writing, was to express clearly what we had in mind, determine precisely how he wanted to be credited in the article, and communicate all those things to Justice for his writing. Dumbass newbie "journalist" moves, check. As soon as I realized the error I'd made, I pulled the story down until I could speak with Elwood.

With his blessing, we've restored the story with the more appropriate "additional reporting" credit, which in retrospect is what we should've used from the beginning. We looove other writers and we would never, ever do anything that might come across as an insult or slight to anyone's creative work -- I'm still a little sick about the fact that my mistake came across that way to anyone. I humbly apologize.

Can't wait to see what Elwood writes next, and we sure look forward to working with him again in the future. He's truly the voice of northwest derby!

a note in the margins from your editor ;)

No disrepect intended, but if you're striving for a dispassionate reporter's voice, you should probably avoid speculative hype in the article's opening sentence. Oly Rollers are "long viewed" (by whom?) as "one of the most potentially dangerous young teams in the sport"? Even if it's true, without attributing such claims to specific sources, it comes off as sensationalism.

busted.

Yeah. We do feel guilty about that sometimes when we do it. Sometimes we find ourselves choosing between writing a little bit of doubletalk, or not writing at all, because we're trying to avoid stirring up a hornet's nest... and to be honest, sometimes we get too comfortable with that bad habit.

In any case, I do think Oly's success in this bout speaks for itself, and happily we've just made arrangements to cover their next bout against Denver Roller Dolls in person. We will endeavor to meet our reader's expectations, if not exceed them!

Sigh...

Let's stick to the on-skates drama.
