WFTDA Nationals: The Opening Bouts

DNN coverage of the Northwest Knockdown 2008 WFTDA National Championship Tournament is made possible through generous financial support from Broken Cherry rock 'n' roll boutique, custom apparel & design studio.

6:30pm Friday -- (W1) Texas vs. (E4) Carolina

The tournament kicks off with the third tournament confrontation between Texas and Carolina, two teams on very different trajectories coming into Portland.

Texas captain Bloody Mary is hoisted by teammates after they win Westerns. Photo: Kerry McClain.Last month, Carolina barely escaped from their Eastern Regional quarterfinal battle with Boston, staging a literally last-minute comeback to edge the Massacre out 77-75. They had no luck in the semifinals, though, getting thumped 106-66 by the eventual 2nd place Windy City, and then dropped the third-place bout against Philly 112-48.

Most recently, Carolina sent a crew to Chicago to take on Windy City in a non-sanctioned game -- although all of Carolina's roster in that bout were all-stars, they brought a short roster that didn't include critical jammers Roxy Rockett, Shirley Temper or Zella Lugosi. WCR ended up eating Carolina's lunch in that one, 191-16.

Texas had a much different experience at their Western Regionals. With two dominating wins over Rocky Mountain (173-50) and Bay Area (135-59), along with a doubtless cathartic victory over longtime rivals Rat City (108-97), Texas rolled to the Western championship with a 3-0 record that extended their current winning streak to five bouts. They also finished the tournament with about as strong a statement as one could hope for, holding the explosive Bay Area girls to only 18 points in the second half of the final while piling on 80 of their own.

It's worth noting that while Texas has won all three of their previous meetings with Carolina, they've done a lot better against Carolina when meeting deep into a tournament. At Dust Devil 2006, Texas dismissed Carolina 177-65 in the single-elimination rounds that took place after a day of round-robin action, and at the 2007 Nationals, Texas controlled a clearly exhausted Carolina team in the third-place bout, 110-46. However, when both teams went in fresh in a September 2007 battle in Raleigh, Carolina nearly managed to topple Texas in a 64-59 nailbiter.

Both teams come into this bout missing a player that was a significant factor at their respective regionals: for Carolina, veteran Shirley Temper is not rostered, while Texas will be without Lady X. Rostered players that weren't on the Regionals lineup include Kali Debutante, Maddat U and Pink Slip for Carolina, and Babe Ruthless and Curvette for Texas.

The winner of this bout takes on the survivor of Windy City / Rat City in a semifinal bout at 6pm on Saturday night.

8:30pm Friday -- (E1) Gotham vs. (W4) Duke City

Duke City was the biggest surprise from either Regional tournament this year, shocking 2007 champs Kansas City on the opening night of Westerns to become the only non-bye team to advance to Nationals. (To underline their feat: the other teams advancing to Nationals were ranked #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7 and #8 going into Regionals -- Duke was ranked #17.) They'll have another chance to break brackets across the nation when they clash with the demolition machine from New York on Friday night. It's the first time these two teams have met in regulation play, though Gotham did take a win in a 10-minute mini bout at Dust Devil 2006, 30 to 6.

Duke City captain Kamikaze Kim. Photo: Kerry McClain. On paper, Gotham would have to be considered the tournament favorites. They haven't dropped a game in 14 months, and currently hold the longest win streak in WFTDA history, having won 9 in a row since then. Going all the way back to their dominant run through the 2007 Eastern Regionals, Gotham is a jaw-dropping 13-1 with an average victory margin of 80 points in their wins. Duke probably won't even be able to count on overconfidence from the New York squad, as Gotham's only loss in that run was in the opening round of last year's Nationals ... to that year's 4th seed from the West, Kansas City. Gotham likely has no interest in reliving that early exit.

In addition to their lengthy run of big wins, they also convincingly handled the only other team to have been as dominant in their victories this year, Windy City, defeating them 133-92 in the Eastern Regional championship. This year, the only team to give them significant trouble was regional rival Philly, who very nearly scored a major upset in the semifinals of Easterns but fell just short at 96-91.

Their opponents from Albuquerque had a start-to-finish spectacular performance against Kansas City, but the rest of their trip through the Western Regionals was marked by inconsistency. They played a tremendous first half against Pikes Peak to go up 101-45 at halftime but then nearly imploded in the second half, allowing Pikes Peak to outscore them 54-13 through the first 20 minutes before finally getting it together again.

They faced similar dry spells in their bouts against Bay Area and Rat City, but without the cushion of a big lead, it sank their chances in both games. They stumbled out of the gate against Bay Area, falling behind 40-4 in the first twenty minutes -- but tightened up afterwards, staying with them 77-69 (in BAD's favor) for the remainder of the bout. Against Rat City, they came out strong and kept the bout close at 22-20 halfway through the first 30, but then got dismantled as the half ended on a 49-8 run for Seattle.

For Duke City to score another colossal upset, they'll need to avoid any cold streaks like those, and will need all their weapons firing. Jammers Muffin and Kamikaze Kim were responsible for the great majority of Duke's points at Westerns, supported by Meep Meep and Tronsexual, but they also gave the jammer star to the tough Amanda Jamitinya in the Rat City bout to good effect. In the pack, Duke's Miss E. Vil, Death Ro, Killer Queen and Dahmernatrix were the major factors in a number of critical penalty-kills that lifted Duke to Nationals.

Gotham's Beyonslay. Photo credit: Colin J.Star jammer Beatrix Slaughter, while on Gotham's 20-skater roster, is still a question mark for this weekend's action -- she hasn't played since suffering a broken collarbone in a August home bout, but Gotham did prove more than capable of compensating for her absence at Easterns, with a jammer stable of Suzy Hotrod, Bonnie Thunders and Cheap Skate being occasionally augmented by Fisti Cuffs. Fisti also excels in the pack and was especially effective in the Easterns championship, frustrating WCR jammers in tough one-on-one blocking. She works with a very tough Gotham D that features Beyonslay, Sweet Sherry Pie, Ginger Snap and Kandy Kakes.

This bout promises to be particularly interesting from a pack-play angle: Gotham is known for running one of the fastest packs in derby while Duke City consistently confounded KCRW with their ability to trap stragglers to create slow packs. Whichever team manages to impose their desired speed on the pack will likely have a more significant advantage than usual in this bout.

The victor here takes on the winner of Bay Area / Philly at 8pm on Saturday.

1pm Saturday -- (E2) Windy City vs. (W3) Rat City

The Saturday action starts with what's likely to be the fastest bout of the opening round, with both teams sporting lineups built to exploit their extremely high average speed.

Windy City's Yvette Yourmaker. Photo: JonU235Windy City has been absolutely untouchable at home this year, putting up an unbelievable 690-92 point differential in four bouts against Tucson, Minnesota, Kansas City and Carolina (though the Carolina bout was not WFTDA sanctioned.)

Through Eastern Regionals, their wins were somewhat more modest, though still convincing -- a 137-76 quarterfinal win over Charm City followed by a semifinal 106-60 handling of Carolina. They suffered a huge setback in the championship bout against Gotham when they lost key jammer Shocka Conduit to a late first-half ejection, which forced them to move critical blocker Malice With Chains to the jam line multiple times in the second. They did manage to keep themselves in the game until fairly late, but couldn't catch the girls from New York, losing 133-92.

Tremendous speed from Yvette Yourmaker, Eva Dead, Athena DeCrime, Kola Loka and Shocka Conduit on the jam line makes WCR a huge threat for explosive jams and high scores. In the bout against Charm City, Shocka nearly grabbed a piece of the tournament single-jam points record with a 24-pointer (the current record of 25 is shared by Duke City's Kamikaze Kim and Kansas City's retired Snot Rocket.)

Rat City very rarely plays outside of the tournament structure -- in fact, they have only one non-tournament sanctioned bout in their history, a 93-88 June win over Bay Area -- but it has apparently not hurt them. They had no problem with Tucson in their first bout at this year's Westerns,  rolling over them 170-81, and had yet another of their classic back-and-forth contests with eventual tourney champs Texas, staying in the game to the very last jam but coming up 11 points short, 108-97.

RCRG's Carmen Getsome has emerged as a primary part of the Rat City jammer attack, joining fellow speedsters Blonde n' Bitchin, Femme Fatale, Miss Fortune and Wile E. Peyote as part of one of the deepest and fastest jammer lineups in the sport. The Rat City defense has a diverse mix of style and size, featuring the long-legged Burnett Down and Summer Assault alongside compact hitting machines like Ann R. Kissed and D-Bomb.

With Windy City also sporting a mix -- tall, agile and wickedly fast bruisers in Malice With Chains and Megan Formor and smaller but extremely effective pack elements like Belle Diablo and Hoosier Mama, this bout promises to provide fascinating one-on-one matchups on both the jammer line and in the pack as both teams try to determine the most effective ways to deal with players they've not seen before -- this is the first meeting between Rat City and Windy City since a barely-there, 26-6 10-minute victory for Rat City during the Dust Devil 2006 round-robin rounds ever (oops).

The survivor of this battle goes up against the winner of Carolina / Texas at 6pm Saturday.

Athena DeCrime 30 // Belle Diablo 666 // Beth Amphetamine 98 // Blossom Bruiso 5  // Donna Party 1847 // Eva Dead 0 // Helsa Wayton 86 // Hoosier Mama 219 // Karmageddon 42 // Kola Loka 911 // Malice With Chains 6 // Megan Formor 1980 // Nina Millimeter 9 // Peg Legs 2 // Shocka Conduit 15 // Tori Adore 19 // Varla Vendetta 25 // Wreck N' Shrew 24 // Ying O' Fire 777 // Yvette YourMaker 999

3pm Saturday -- (W2) Bay Area vs. (E3) Philly

Almost exactly a year ago, Bay Area and Philly faced off in one of the closest and lowest-scoring games in WFTDA history when Philly squeaked by for a 62-56 win in a game hosted by Carolina on November 18, 2007. These two teams join Duke City as crews making their first appearance at Nationals.

Philly's Teflon Donna. Photo credit: Colin J.While Philly finished third at Eastern Regionals, they're likely coming into this tourney feeling good about their chances, as they almost delivered what would have been a total shocker of an upset over Gotham in the semifinals -- Philly charged back from an 86-63 deficit with 11 minutes to play to take a 91-89 lead with 1:35 on the clock, but last-jam heroics from Gotham's Suzy Hotrod gave Gotham the win in the end. Still, that bout made Philly the only team this year to give Gotham a serious scare; the 5 point win was Gotham's narrowest margin of victory ever. Philly went on to easily handle Carolina in the third place bout, getting revenge for a 107-86 loss at home in August and building confidence for this clash with BAD.

Shenita Stretcher stepped up impressively as a jammer at Regionals, and took her place alongside the tireless Mo Pain and extraordinarily crafty tactician Teflon Donna as one of the linchpins of a jammer crew that also includes Violet Temper and Persephone. Teflon is also particularly difficult to deal with in the pack, with a positional blocking style that looks casually lackadaisical but consistently leaves opponents with no escape while Robin Drugstores, Nina Knockout and Ivana Rock bring the hard hits.

Bay Area gets a piece of the pie. Photo: Kerry McClain.Bay Area had a rough, penalty-heavy battle with Rose City to eject them from Western Regionals quarterfinal, and jumped all over upstart Duke City in the beginning of their semifinal match, going up 40-4 in the first 20 minutes and then maintaining that lead for the remainder of the bout. While their championship clash with Texas started out looking great for the girls from San Francisco -- they opened up a 27-12 lead after 13 minutes -- they seemingly got severely rattled when a 14-0 jam erased their lead, and Texas put the hammer down from that point on, outscoring BAD by a remarkable 108-22.

What the shiniest team in derby lacks in subtlety, they more than make up for in talent. The distinctive arm-swinging jammer style of speed demons Kitt Turbo and Grr Lee Burly and the unmistakable game face of Demanda Riot might be the most eye-catching elements of their play, but Westerns revealed BAD to be a particularly deep team, with Killer Vee, Taxi Scab and Sassy Slayher joining Demanda Riot in laying out major hits left and right and Pia Mess excelling both in the pack and with the jam star.

For Bay Area, the goal will be to stay clear of the penalty box that bedeviled them so much against Rose City, remain focused and avoid getting rattled as they were against Texas; a early second-half ejection for Taxi Scab hampered their comeback attempt. For Philly, the goal will be to duplicate their level of play in the Gotham bout. If both teams succeed, this one's got the potential to be every bit as close as their first meeting.

This bout's winner takes on the winner of Gotham / Duke City at 8pm on Saturday.

omg

soooooooo excited!!!

Why do we have to work this week?

Don't our day jobs know how big this weekend is??

Also, minor correction, I don't think WCR played Rat City in Dust Devil '06. Though I've certainly repressed many memories from that tourney, I believe we had our clocks cleaned by Madison, AZRD, BAD, and Dallas. We did play Rat City home team Grave Danger last spring, though.

We're Playing "Pretend the Economy is Good"

So we're working like things are humming along smoothly. When we know, with few exceptions, they aren't.

Which makes a long weekend of derby oh-so precious.

There's something about that picture of B.A.D. above that has put the theme song from "Fame" in my head. I'm pretty nonplussed about the whole situation, to be honest.

Justice Feelgood Marshall's picture

As I remember it

Bay Area was doing an interpretive dance to the end of the Jeffersons theme in that shot. As it happens, both Gotham and Bay Area have used that song as their intro for interleague bouts ... so if they should meet in the semifinals, it's totally THEME SONG DEATHMATCH.

I'm trying to wrap my head around why a west coast team would be dancing so gleefully about movin' on up to th' east si-i-ide.

Perhaps I'm better off not knowing, as I might inadvertently violate my "don't care about which region is superior" thing.

could it be an east bay thing?

We had to do some serious digging

... to find the Dust Devil 2006 results, but finally turned 'em up on the wayback machine. And even then, oops. 26-6 was actually Bay Area over Windy City.

Bay Area had a hell of a weekend at the first Dust Devil, coming in second in their pool after having played only ONE bout in their history to that point!

And a member of the faculty where I work, this seemed to nicely get at how I feel about this tournament. The first six lines get at my disdain for air trvael, and the last four lines seem, to me, to summarize a good bit of the vicariousness of being an official and never a skater:

http://www.poems.com/poem.php?date=14149

As I lugged my luggage past the airport bar
I angled my neck to peer between drinkers
to see whether the field goal was good
in whatever game it was
because those people cared apparently
and I wanted for a second not to be too different.

Okay but also wanted to reap the benefit for a few seconds
of an image of successful performance in a ritualized activity
where skill earns unerasable points
and the swarming helmeted deniers can't quite reach you.

Waiting is the hardest part...

I'm so excited to go to Portland this weekend to see the BEST derby in the country!!!

I have a few favorites I'm rooting for but really it's anyone's tournament. You should always be afraid of the underdog! You just don't know what team is really getting it together right now. I can tell you though it's going to be awesome!

Muffin, I'm sorry I will not be there for your game on Friday. :( I'm not flying in until Friday night. BUT I will be cheering for you in my heart!! Dahmer and Kim too!

To all the skaters: kick some ass and remember when it really hurts and you don't want to get up, skater harder or feel like you can't make the play happen, a champion is someone who does even though it seems impossible. Pain is temporary, glory is forever!!! Good luck.

Nationals Prediction Time! Hellyeah!

Well its finally here...the Nationals live from Coffee City. My hard drive on my laptop left this mortal coil a week ago but after $75 I am back and I am PUMPED. Damn right! Are ya in a Gothic mood?? Hmmmm??? Hope so. Right from the outset I will tell ya that I'm only seeing one upset in the first round...sorry but I call 'em like I see 'em. And after all there are too many Derby gamblers out there and they have families to feed ya know. They rely on these predits so I cant lead 'em astray with any trendy, errant picks. Trendy meaning the Dukies beating the Mighty Goths. I will not go down like that. Soooo...with the Plasmatics "Priestess" blasting in the background here ya go:

TX v Carolina
My head is still spinning at the outright beat-down that Chi-town delivered on Carol a scant few weeks ago. Are you serious??! How did that even happen? Hell, I would expect Carolinas JV squad to do better than that. And before any Carol-backers get too excitable know this...I have the utmost respect for that Carolina squad. Certainly they have proven themselves to be a consistent contender every year and perhaps that dreadful bout against the Chicago Crushers was a mere abberation. Maybe we all had a group hallucination and it never really happened. After all it wasnt a WFTDA-sanctioned bout so maybe that bout happened in some twisted, acid-soaked alternate reality. BUT I cant forget it. Nope. And TX?? Uuuhhh the Original Muthas are BACK people. TX will rise and conquer. The Muthas all over Carol.

Gotham v Duke City
Are there any among us that are not incredibly impressed with the run that the Dukies put together in the Easterns? From the "Land of Entrapment" they came, saw and conquered. Yeah, that was mighty impressive and respect was earned throughout the tournament and heads were turned as minds were blown away by Albucrackee. Dukies? Ya got so much to be proud of. However ya drew the long straw and I dont think that a repeat performance is gonna happen this time. In fact I KNOW its not gonna happen but thats cool anyway because you Rollergirls are major up 'n comers so let the doubters beware.Next year the Dukes arent gonna sneak up on anyone and they wont need to. The Mighty Gothic Queens of the Big Apple arent going to let up for one second now that their goal of world domination is so close tho. And dominate the world they will. Goths to the max.

Windy City v Rat City
Here's where you could perhaps pick an upset. As if any "underdog" winning in the Nationals is actually an "upset". Lets be real...this is the cream of the Derby crop in this Tournament and nothing is an upset okay? Well, except for Dukies getting by NYC that is. BUT I could see the Rats getting a win here. But I"M not gonna go that rout. Hell no. The Crushers are so strong, so willful, so full of team chemistry and heart that I just cant see them going down to RC. This is the year of the Crushers and they are gonna will themselves to a win in this one someway, somehow. Oh it'll be a close one alright but in the end Chi-town will energe victorious through superior team bonding.

BAD v Philly
Now this is where things get very interesting. Cant wait to see this one on day one. And here is where I pick the one (mild) upset in Round 1. Philly is killer. BAD will give it their all as usual and will be ahead at the end of the first half more than likely but as this bout unfolds in the second half I see Liberty City gaining ground and then clawing their way to a win. Any team with Shenita Stretcher on the roster is gonna find a way. I just like the sound of that name...Shenita Stretcher...yeahhh...Sheniiiita Stretcherrrrr. Beeyootiful. Robin Drugstores is gonna hook it up ya know? She's got "connections". As in her shoulder connecting with the oppositions Jammers. Philly...I'm a BELIEVER. Love Philly in this one. Violet will be wearing that award winning smile at the afterparty.

And for the curious, here's how FTS currently ranks these teams:
1-the Goths
2-The Muthas
3-the Crushers
4-the Rats
6-Carol
7-Liberty City
17-the Dukies

while i appreciate the prediction...

we play on day 2. =)

also, FTS rankings are (through duke):

1 Gotham Girls Roller ... 163.02
2 Texas Rollergirls 139.9
3 Windy City Rollers 125.27
4 Rat City Roller Girl... 120.65

No idea how Duke got ranked as low as they have considering how well they play when they can put it together (yes I know how the rankings work, that's not how I meant it). I'd love to see an upset there, and if they can avoid beating themselves before the bout starts they'll have a good chance. TX are my girls tho, Texas Texas Kill Kill Kill! That guy is just some poster. I mean the real deal. The ruler of the underworld. One third of the Liberty Belles roster is made up of (PRG home team) Heavy Metal Hookers who dedicated their winning season last year to Lucifer himself.

:-)

and let's be honest, zombie...can anyone really lose with a Fire Unicorn on their side? i think not.

it's on Mother Truckers!

its exactly 11 hours until my flight from Austin to P-Land! I'm taking a break from packing because I can't settle on a proper DERBY T-SHIRT to KISS T-SHIRT ratio! My heart is already pounding and I haven't even broken the seal on the 5 HOUR ENERGY SHOT six-pack I got tonight.

Blood will be shed this weekend, blood on the track, victory blood!

Im peeing on the floor

Seriously, I am so excited to go to Nationals that I just peed a little. My heart belongs to BAD and I want my girls to come out on top, however, after reading over regionals I am thinking Gotham may take this. But, there is one thing I have learned about BAD. They adapt quickly, learn fast and never give up. This girls are quick to take a few months and turn it into a championship. Look for me, I will either be in pink and burgundy or black and gold!

Can't have "bodily functions" without "fun"!

I'm taking the edge off my nerves by drinking.

Or am I drinking because it's a Thursday... maybe both reasons.

I recall Mercy Less saying that they'd have MavTV's 7 cameras there for a live stream. I don't believe this is going to be streamed from MavTV's site though, as there's nothing on there now that even lets you watch the network live.

My best guess is that the tournament will be aired here.

I'm such a nerdling that I was on http://www.ustream.tv/ (okay, admittedly I was watching the Shiba Inu livestream that will ruin your life!) and DNN is NOT listed in Today's Events. Justice, Hurt, Gnosis, should I be worried?

Knockdown Live

Should I email Ustream and bother them to add it under Today's (and Tomorrow's and Sunday's) Events?

I'd just be some random person -- should this go through someone who has a relationship with them already? Will it crash any system if a zillion of us are streaming there?

Philly wins! Philly wins!!

Philly wins! Philly wins!! YES!

TX v WCR TX will emerge as

TX v WCR
TX will emerge as victors in this tightly contested bout. WCR is awesome and have fought incredibly hard but the rest that TX has (having played FRI) will probably help them out. The Original Muthas people!!

Gotham v Philly
OH how I am rooting for those Liberty City girls in this one. And even tho it would blow my picks up I have to say that I would LOOOOOVE to see Philly take this tournament. They are my "sentimental" pick in this tournament. But I believe that at the end of the night the Mighty Goths will prove too much. Yep...The Goths. They will cntinue their world domination tour.

TX vs WCR

Sorry, ladies, but WCR is blowin' up a storm this year.

What was the Gotham vs. Duke score?

Biker_Dave's picture

National Championship Prediction-this is it!

Well I went 1 for 2 last night. Gotham destroyed my sentimental faves Philly. Philly just seemed overwhelmed early on, dug themselves one helluva deep hole and were never able to get their bearings at all. Really, they seemed fairly drained from their earlier dominant victory over the B.A.D.asses. The Mighty Gothic Queens punched Liberty City in the mouth right away then put their foot on Phillys throat and showed no mercy. It was brutal. I have a great deal of affection for those Philly skaters and I felt bad for them really. They have had an amazing season and tho they were down by a large margin they kept their sense of humor and had a good time. I love that. Robin, Violet, Shenita and the Philly gang are some incredible Rollergirls and I wish them the best. They go up against TX in the "consolation" bout/"grudge" match this afternoon.

Which brings me to my only wrong pick. And after seeing the unbelievable bout of the ages between TX and WCR I dont even care! This had to be one of the all-time greatest WFTDA bouts. Back and forth these two teams went. WCR was affected somewhat by the loss of Varla who went out with a seperated shoulder, but still they battled like valiant warriors against the Original Muthas. They handled TX's physicality and refused to be intimidated by them. I could go on and on but when time ran out the score was tied and and overtime was required to decide the victor. Really, these were two teams so evenly matched it could have gone either way at any given point. And Rice Rocket?? You freaking rule Rollergirl. If it werent for Rice's amazing ability as Jammer TX wouldnt have hung on like they did. The Muthas have nothing to hang their heads over thats for sure. Personally, this was the single greatest bout I have ever seen. AMAZING.
Which brings me to tonights National Championship:

Windy City v Gotham

I hope that Chi-town didnt spend themselves yesterday in that TX bout because theyre gonna have to bring everything theyve got to hang with the Goths. Frankly...this has been the Year of the Goth and I just dont see 'em falling one game short of their plans for world domination. No way. With the powerful Jammer tandem of Bonnie Thunders and Suzy Hotrod they are brutal. And having Cheapskate as their other killer Jammer they are tuff to contend with. Windy City has one serious intangible on their side tho, and I mentioned this Friday: Superior team bonding. There is a lot to be said for that and team chemistry will take a team far beyond their skill level. Team chemistry is such an elusive ghost. Its hard to explain, difficult to understand and impossible to force. And those Chicago Crushers have it. The Goths have a chemistry too but not like those Crushers. However sometimes brute power wins the day and the brute power, intelligent play and speed of the Gothic Queens will be enough to pull out a victory tonite in what should be another "instant classic". Watch this match!! I promise it will be what Roller Derby is all about: Power, speed, comeraderie, humor, flash, sexiness, excitement and elation. Dont miss this one.
