Since roller derby first hit the UK, two teams have been ever-present on the scene. The London Rollergirls were the first team formed in the country, and hot on their heels were the Birmingham Blitz Derby Dames.
In the following couple of years, London Brawling, the LRG’s all star travel team have picked up victories against the Glasgow Rollergirls and Team Canada, whilst the Blitz Dames have recorded wins against Glasgow and the London Rockin’ Rollers, and a loss to Team Canada.
What everyone wanted though, was to see these two longstanding members of the UK Derby community face each other on the track for the first time, and on October 25th it finally happened when the LRG made the short hop up the M40 to the midlands for Capital Punishment.
First half
Both teams put their most experienced jammers out first: Sky Rockit for the London Rollergirls and Violet Attack for BBDD. Things started well for Birmingham, as Violet became lead jammer but a strange tactical decision meant that despite scoring 5 points on her first pass, she didn’t call off the jam when bogged down in the pack on her second pass, letting the jam run the full two minutes and allowing Sky Rockit to pick up 17 points.
In the second jam, Kitty DeCapitate broke an LRG record by picking up 20 points in a single jam, beating Sky Rockit’s previous high of 18. In that jam, Hilda Blizzhard scored a single point for Birmingham -- the last point BBDD would score for 14 jams.
Two ten point jams and a 14 point jam for Sky Rockit, an 11 point jam for Kitty DeCapitiate and a 15 pointer for Missyle Elliot were among the LRG’s tallies in the first half. In the next to last jam of the period, Birmingham picked up 2 points courtesy of Marla Mayhem, a guest skater from the Glasgow Rollergirls, although Kamikaze Kitten still managed to pick up 3 for London.
The last jam of the period was the first one won by Birmingham as Violet Attack scored 5, whilst shutting out Sky Rockit. The score at the end of the first period was Birmingham 13, London 137.
London Brawling’s team work was shining through in the first half. Walls were being made at both the front and back of the pack, and Birmingham’s jammers were often held between the two for long periods. Both teams were working hard however, and it was great to see such a great mix of experience across the board.
Second half
The second period started with Sky Rockit picking up 5 points, but in the second jam, Birmigham had their most successful jam of the game, with Roisin Roulette scoring 7 and shutting out Grievous Bodily Charm. It appears that Birmingham used up all their luck in that jam, and didn’t score again until the final jam of the game. During the BBDD barren spell, Sky Rockit decided she wasn’t happy with Kitty taking her record earlier in the day, and in the 7th jam of the period scored herself a massive 22 points in one jam, reclaiming the record she had lost less than an hour earlier. Kitty did her best to get it back in the very next jam, but was held back to just 19 points. The last jam came around soon after, and Violet Attack scored herself another 3 points for Birmingham making her her team’s most successful jammer of the day, whilst Ninjette rounded off the LRG’s victory with another 14 points, which left us with a final score of Birmingham 23, London Rollergirls 274 -- a massive 251 point win!
Conclusion
Hula Gunn for London has been with the league since the beginning and was rewarded for a hard fought bout today with her teams MVP award, shared with Kamikaze Kitten, whilst Bee Sting of Birmingham, who skated with the LRG in the early days before leaving to found the Blitz Dames was captaining her team on the day.
Both teams also debuted some less experienced skaters on their all star teams, with Birmingham fielding a player who has only been with them since January, and London playing Ninjette, who has only been skating since April, but who justified her inclusion on the team with a 19 point total.
All eyes in the UK are now looking towards the first ever European Derby Tournament next summer, and both teams will be looking at their schedule leading up to that. LRG will be completing their first ever intraleague season, whilst BBDD have some very tough warm ups against the visiting Stuttgart Valley Rollergirlz,, and will hopefully be hosting a Birmingham vs. Birmingham showdown when a team visits from Birmigham, Alabama!
Perhaps most eagerly awaited however, is the return match for the Blitz Dames Vs LRG rivalry, as the two teams will meet again in London next May. LRG will be looking to go into the tournament with their unbeaten record intact, whilst BBDD will of course be on the lookout for a dish best served cold… Revenge.

inaccurate
I was out the bout as my best friend skate with birmingham - and i know that after a league split there was 3 veteran skaters left so it was more like *everyone* was new starting in january 08 along with injuries that's the reason they had guest skaters, which makes it difficult for a team to gel on the track, which it seems was the problem with the Dames onthe day. also wasn't Bee the captain as not reflected in your rosters and Liv or Die Pirate City Rollergirls? (according to my programme!) despite the score it was a lively entertaining bout to watch - with the Dames fighting it out to the end - despite most of the Dame skaters inexperience - they were hungry for a-team action. think it would be good if london would have sent a more mixed set of skaters instead of their most experienced.
corrections and my opinion
Not that I think it’s really an important point that needs to go tit for tat, but technically both teams had a healthy mix of “veteran pre-2008” skaters and newer skaters.
Bee was indeed the captain of the Brummie Bombshells, and I suspect Big Cat just forget to check his roster carefully.
Also, Liv or Die has become a new member of London Rollergirls as of November 1st, which Big Cat is aware of, so I suspect that is why he listed her as such.
As to the question of whether LRG should have sent a “more mixed set of skaters”...
• The game was always intended to be a bout between each league’s travel teams...that was the stated intention from the minute both leagues discussed it, to the point we signed the contract.
• Inclusion in the London Brawling all-star team is a reward for our best skaters – and part of that reward is getting to play travel games.
• This is a competitive sport, and that’s how we intend to play it. If the point was to field evenly matched teams so scores were similar, then I don’t think we could call this a sport. We are gearing up for an EU tournament in July, so it is in EVERY leagues interest to gain experience playing at the level that will be present in the tournament. This is the point of calling it a sport, instead of modelling ourselves after the scripted days of the past. We dont intend to script our game play any more than we intend to, in effect, script our rosters.

travel teams
Travel teams are always subject to changes due to injury, retirement, holidays, etc. As Captain of London Brawling, I can tell you we also had veterans not in the team. Correctional Felicity, arguably one of our most feared blockers and jammers injured herself a week before the game, throwing all our lineups out the window, and we had to re-jig how we play as a team. Also Drolma and Mouchete, who have been on the travel teams and intra-league teams from the beginning, had both retired only 2 months ago. My point being that teams will always change for various reasons, in fact Belle De Brawl from our team is moving back to Australia soon, and I am going back myself next year. Teams never remain the same for long, so you're always going to have to learn how to play together. That's the nature of roller derby!
Roller derby in the UK is still so new, with only a handful of travel team games played so far, we are still all working out where we all stand ability-wise. London Brawling did not know they would win this game(as Captain, I never once took it as a given), let alone by such a high margin---it was the first time we'd played BBDD. We know some of the Dames skaters, having skated with them at Rollercon and at boot camps, and they are really strong skaters. So sending a less experienced team when we really had no major benchmark to compare abilities, would have been presumptuous.
As Bette has said, the contract was made between the 2 travel teams....BBDD knew our skaters having watched many of our inter-league games, so they knew the standard of our skaters when they asked to play us.
We have a good relationship with the BBDD girls and we're looking forward to the rematch in May!
:)
Wow. Thanks for writing up
Wow. Thanks for writing up our bout recap - didn't realise you were going to do this! Also, hadn't realised you were the correspondent / voice for the UK as you've never written about any of our other bouts or other leagues besides LRG. Cheers! After reading it, it's pretty fair write up, but crazyjane is right the majority of our skaters did start after January 08, but feel they did a great job considering! Well done LRG! Win or lose we love to play --- we think we hosted a great bout and are happy to have given London their first ever away game. Humble in victory and gracious in defeat! We really look forward to May for the rematch.

"Chief Over-There Correspondent"
is, like most DNN titles, somewhat informal (see: Hurt Reynolds, Primary Cat Herder.)
That being said, Merv also did provide us with a preview of the June Team Canada tour of the UK, which discussed Glasgow & Birmingham in addition to LRG, and sends us most of the scores we get from UK derby.

Cool didn't know that
Cool didn't know that either! We normally report our scores directly to Phil Arnold, but will start to do that with DNN as well.
huh
Guess those posts I put on your forum about it - which you responded to thanking me for letting you know - must have slipped your mind then. Or maybe the emails with Big Cat about it?

Never take us too seriously
Oh yeah, making up titles is half the fun of prepping submissions.
We would be most grateful for your score submissions, either through the Submit form on this site or by email to scores@derbynewsnetwork.com. That applies to all y'all. Without community help, the score and bout listings on the site would be mission impossible.
In fact..
I couldn't have written the Canada Preview without your help! I've still got the emails in my inbox titled "DNN Stuff" with the details of your roster and your skaters to watch!
Thanks
BCM.
