Battle Royale Day Two: What's on tap from DNN

DNN coverage of the 2008 WFTDA Tournaments is made possible through the generous support of Broken Cherry Boutique, Design Studio & Custom Apparel.  Additional support for coverage of each tournament's Final Four bouts comes from Sin City Skates: buy skates from a skater!

Here's what DNN has on tap for you today in our continuing coverage of the Battle Royale 2008 WFTDA West Regional Tournament, live from the Verizon Wireless Theater in Houston, TX

Four boutcasts (all times CDT):

  • Quarterfinal 3:  (5w) Rose City Rollers vs (4w) Bay Area Derby Girls, 8 am
  • Quarterfinal 4:  (6w) Rocky Mountain Rollergirls vs (3w) Texas Rollergirls 9:45 am
  • Semifinal 1:  Winner of Quarterfinal 3 vs (9w) Duke City Derby, 6:15 pm
  • Semifinal 2:  Winner of Quarterfinal 4 vs (2w) Rat City Rollergirls, 7:45 pm

Quarterfinal Recaps:

Pending Justice's output level -- bear with us, it's been a lot of typing this weekend. I myself am looking forward to what he has to say about the tournament's 9th seed knocking off the reigning national champions last night.

Interviews:

Moose Ondaluce has been capturing many, many skater interviews with a lot of help from the announcer crew here.  We have to go buy a widget to hook up the whatsit to the thingamajigger, but if we get that done during the consolation rounds today, we ought to be able to start putting those up today.  Good stuff there! -- UPDATE: We picked up the widget, but the thingamajigger still couldn't see the whatsit.  Moosecasts will have to wait until the weekdays.  Lots and lots of great stuff, I can't wait to see it all myself!

Commentary:
I'm gonna have a whole bunch of nice things to say about the job Houston Roller Derby has done putting on this tournament, and what other leagues can learn from it.  Watch the Staff Blog for more.

Streaming Video:

It's not a DNN production, but we'd be remiss if we didn't direct you to Houston Roller Derby's live video stream of all the action!

the other games

Is there a list of the consolation games being played somewhere?

For example, who is playing right now?

FYI: you guys are truly truly amazing! Thank You.

UPDATE: never mind... it's on the side like it always is.

consolation for the nation

Hopefully I have this correct:

Currently Tucson is playing Pikes Peak (in a close one) to be followed by
Kansas City v. Denver
Houston v. Dallas
Rose City v. Rocky Mountain

and some other teams will face each other after that in some sort of semi-final type of action. That might be pretty good too.

Pikes Peak beats Tucson, 107-79

Next up, as Slack says, is Kansas City vs. Denver.

even more altitude and heart

Pikes Peak has momentum again! Even though they came into this tournament still sore from facing the not-so-gentle giants of Salt City two weeks ago, and took a heavy blow from the Muñecas Muertas, they are playing with a lot of heart!

Looking at the consolation bracket, PPDD has the honor and opportunity of facing Kansas City on Sunday. Good luck to both, and Denver versus Tucson should be interesting, too!

Semifinal Predictions

Well it looks like I broke even at 2-2 for the day and got kicked for throwing logic out the window on behalf of my hunches (Rose City). I have to say that as an x-Albucrackian that I am shocked to see the Dukes upset both the Pikes and (especially) KC. Humble congrats to Duke City for an amazing run thus far and I would have to say that they are without any question the "Cinderella" of the Western Regionals. And while it may be premature to say this I'm going to anyway...are we witnessing the decline of KC? I stated earlier that if they played tight and trying "not to lose" that they would be in serious trouble and without having seen the bout or any footage of it yet it seems that KC may have fallen victim to their own minds. KC fans have cause to be concerned about their team right now. I am sure that KC is quite good enough to be a top 10 team but at this rate their days of being a top 3 team may be over.Especially with TX coming back strong. Like I said its still a little early yet to make such a statement but I really have to wonder what has happened to this once great team. I mean, its not like KC ever blew away top-ranked teams or anything but they always seemed to just find a way to win. I look forward to watching some footage of their bout against the Dukes to see what I can discern. At any rate KC is stumbling and it kinda pains me because I have always really liked them.

And as regards Rose City...well, I did throw out my "common sense" and went with my hunch and it didnt pay off but I'm still proud of those Rosies for keeping it competitive and showing heart. Nothing whatsoever against BAD but I was really, really pulling for those Rose City Rollergirls. The Roses have an exceptional team and they have the spirit that its gonna take to reach the next level. And they WILL reach the next level. BAD are just sooooo tuff. Absolute killers.

On to my predictions...

Duke v BAD
Well Dukies I'll tell ya what. I'll pick against ya one more time and then you'll be certain to win, right? Hey, I'm doin' ya a favor! BAD will win in a fairly close one and they'll move on to the Finals. Viva Munecas??

TX v Rat City
TX are on their way to reclaiming their elite, "Mother of this all" status. They will beat Rat-C in an entertaining and intense bout. Hey, TX are on a roll now...sort of like an express train and I wouldnt wanna be in their way. They have rediscovered their will and found their magical Derby powers and they're gonna have a few extra shots of Jager at the afterparty in celebration of their conquering selves. The Muthas are back. Believe that!

Thus far I stand at 5-3. It could be worse. At least I'm still on the upside. And Duke? Here's yer chance to laugh at me one more time...can ya rise above the BADasses? We'll see.

MercyLess's picture

I'll do my part here...

...and object to your Duke prediction *again* in the proud tradition of sports superstition! I'm telling you, BAD has the skills, but heart could win the night again. I wouldn't expect the Munecas to back down in the face of the awesomeness that is the BAD girls - they're hungry! And the Cinderella analogy is all too appropriate for the league Dahmer has always referred to as "WFTDA's booty call". Look out, little birdies and woodland creatures are suiting them up in the locker room for an exciting game! - love, Mercy Less

The "Muthas" are back!!

Hell yes Texas! Unbelievable win...a remarkable comeback. And I stand at 7-3. There's no stopping that TX Express, no way, no how. Next up: the win against those BADasses. Its gonna happen.

That was one hell of a bout... edge o' the seat.
