8am: #8w Pikes Peak vs #9w Duke City
The Pikes Peak team that comes into this bout is probably looking forward to erasing all memories of their last Western Regionals appearance way back in February 2007 -- then, they were dominated by Bay Area in a 198-15 blowout.
This year, though, looks to be different. After losing the first six WFTDA games of their existence, the league from Colorado Springs has met with considerably more success in 2008, going 8-1 with their only blemish being a respectable 31 point loss to tough Rocky Mountain. After a surprising upset over Tucson in June, they shot from #27 to #16 in the last ranking period -- tying them for the biggest single-quarter leap in rankings history with Detroit.
Albuquerque's Duke City has had a relatively sedate bouting schedule in 2008, having played three WFTDA bouts and putting their local-team schedule on a year-long hiatus while seeking a new venue. On the other hand, they're 3-0 on the year, with two of those wins over fellow tourney teams Denver and Dallas.
Duke City and Pikes Peak have faced off once before, with Duke City claiming a 137-78 win -- but that match was in March 2007, ancient history by derby standards. As a possible point of more recent reference, both teams recently had blowout wins over Salt City -- Duke City thumped them 224-29 in a neutral-ground bout in Las Vegas at August's Rollercon, while Pikes Peak sent them away with a 194-41 loss just two weeks ago on September 20.
While Duke City certainly has its share of speedsters (notably Muffin, Tronsexual and Kamikaze Kim) their success relies greatly on some of the most vexing defense in the sport, known to occasionally make normally placid jammers show clear frustration after too long trapped inside DCD's best pack work.
With these two teams apparently fairly evenly matched, this early-morning bout may come down to which team adjusts to the unfamiliar location and start time first. Duke City may have an advantage here, in that they're quite familiar with the road -- they've never played a ranked WFTDA bout at home.
The winner here goes on to face Kansas City at 6:15pm Friday night.

9:45am: #7w Tucson vs. #10w Dallas
Tucson entered the 2007 Western Regional as the #2 ranked team in the nation and very nearly claimed that tourney's championship, advancing to the final bout but losing to Rat City in a narrow one.
However, Tucson has had something of a rough road since then, losing often and sometimes by epic margins -- though, in their defense, they've consistently gone up against the best of the best, battling six of the top ten teams in their 2008 season (many of them arguably the most-rapidly improving teams in the sport today.)
Hard-hitting Dallas is looking to make the next step as a league with this match. Their 2008 has been a series of threatening to knock off top-20 competition but falling just a bit short -- they played Boston tight for the opening 30 before Boston took over in the second half, they hung with very tough Charm City back in January to lose by a respectable 28 points, and, in the biggest heartbreaker, came within a mere point of defeating Duke City in May.
While they are 3-3 on the year, all of their wins have been blowouts of unranked or lowly ranked teams (75 points over Northwest Arkansas, 96 points over Angel City, and, just two weeks ago, 128 points over West Texas.) A victory over Tucson on this stage would certainly be Dallas' biggest win to date.
The winner here goes on to face Rat City at 7:45pm Friday night.

11:15am: #5w Rose City vs. #12w Denver
Denver is the only team in this year's Western Regionals that wasn't among the original 30 founding WFTDA leagues. Their low seed gives them the toughest test of the opening round, but they're not new to facing down high-level opponents. While they lost 5 straight to kick off 2008, their strength of schedule -- taking on top-fives #1 Kansas, #2 Gotham and #4 Carolina, along with strong mid-level teams in Duke City and Madison -- managed to get them just under the rankings cutoff for the tourney.
It wasn't until late August that Denver got their first win of the year -- 86-53 over No Coast, but then they finally got their long-attempted upset win of a tournament-level team when they defeated Minnesota 89-57 in September.
Rose City did not start their travel season until May, but in the amount of time this all-star has been going around they've made some impressive waves -- hanging close in games with top-ten talent like Philly and Bay Area and dominating tournament level Minnesota.
Of course, for close observers of derby, their most noteworthy act of the summer was utterly dismantling a mixed team from #3 Rat City in an unsanctioned expo bout. With Rat City not sending a significant amount of their experienced tournament players to that match, the outcome led to some controversy among fans as to whether it was an accurate gauge of Rose City's strength -- but Rose City's performance this weekend should go a long way towards answering those questions.
The winner here plays again at 8am Saturday morning against Bay Area.

12:45pm: #6w Rocky Mountain vs. #11w Houston
Houston will have their work cut out for them in this matchup. Rocky Mountain, a team known primarily for impressive endurance of their jammers and their very physical yet still savvy pack play, had another impressive moment by losing to Windy City by 39 points in early September. Normally, a 39 point loss is not something that would be a cause for celebration, but they managed to be the only team not utterly dominated by WCR in their last four outings -- #1 Kansas City, #13 Tucson and #18 Minnesota all went down by +100 points against Windy City.
Rocky Mountain went 5-2 in 2008, with their season bookended by losses to Charm City and the aforementioned Windy City. Their run of 5 wins in a row featured a standout defensive performance against Providence, when they shut them down 137-9, and a very hard-fought 111-93 victory over Boston at June's ECE. The Boston win was truly a testament to RMRG's Colorado-bred endurance -- it was very close in the first half, but the difference seemed to be that the Boston jammers ran out of the energy to take advantage of their opportunities in the final 15 minutes, while Rocky Mountain was still operating at near peak capacity.
Houston's bout history seems somewhat unpredictable -- at May's Roll for the Cure tournament, they had a very respectable 99-54 performance against top-ten Bay Area, but were then crushed by Rose City, 154-44. Likewise, they lost by surprisingly large margins in both their ECE bouts, getting steamrolled by Charm City (214-62) and Boston (114-38) -- but then turned around the following month to pound #35 Northwest Arkansas 176-79.
The most highly ranked team Houston has ever taken down was a (then) #21-ranked Dallas back in September 2007; this year, their biggest victim was Northwest Arkansas at #35, so they'll be looking for a huge upset against Rocky Mountain here.
The winner of this bout takes on Texas at 9:45am on Saturday.

Predictions for Round 1 of Western Regionals
Predictions for Western Regionals ’08
Yes, its a great time of year for all of us Derby fanatics! The Western Regionals are the first up and the cream of the crop of the "non-bye" teams in my opinion are Rocky Mtn, Rose City and Pikes Peak. Rose City in particular have really impressed me in '08 and I have a feeling about this team. Call it a gut instinct hunch if ya wanna. Or call me wack if ya wanna (PPDD and Rocky fans will!). So lets get down to the particulars:
Game 1- Duke City v Pikes Peak
FTS ranks the Dukies at 17 and Pikes at 11. I used to live in Albucrackie so you would think that maybe I would have a soft spot for them. You would be wrong, but thats cool. PPDD are gonna win this bout and in the 2nd half they will pull away from the Dukes. I actually like the season that Duke has had and with wins over Dallas and Denver they have shown that they have what it takes to be a winner but I wouldnt want to pick 'em over the incredible PPDD skaters. Nope. And its not anything to lose to TX but they did get kicked 158-36 so lets not get too carried away with Duke. The Pikes on the other hand have killed it this year going 8-1 for '08! I personally saw the fight and determination in this squad and they have a nice corps of Jammers, the "twins" Psycho Babble and Deranged in particular. The one loss for Pikes?? Uuuhhh...that would be those butt-kickers known as Rocky freakin' Mtn. Yep-PPDD will win.
Game 2- Dallas v Tuscon
I never know what to expect outta Dallas. They have been fairly inconsistent but they have played some tuff teams. They are 3-4 in '08 and are ranked by FTS at 25. They got nailed by Bean City 113-48. The Beans never wavered and dominated Dallas throughout. FTS 15 Tuscon have also been something of a mystery and suffered thru a long and painful losing streak against some killer teams before finally finding a win against Dom. I have no doubt that Tuscon is feeling a little better about themselves right now and they are gonna find a way to win against Dallas in what should be a close hard-fought bout. Tuscon is gonna feel even better about themselves after this bout. Well...until the next round.
Game 3-Denver v Rose City
Denver has a record of 2-5 in '08 and its not for lack of trying. Denver has some pieces but ya need a lot more than pieces when ya go up against the might of NYC's Gothic Queens. The Goths showed why they are the class of Derby and crushed Denver by a score 221-37. Ouch! Denver also went down to Carolina, the Maddie and KC. Rose City on the other hand have been VERY impressive even with losses to the Pikes and those badass B.A.D. rollergirls in '08. They beat AZ, Minnie and Houston and are ranked by FTS at 14. The Rosies will win in impressive fashion and are poised to upset in the next round. Rose City is tuffer than their 3-2 '08 record shows. Ya heard it here.
Game 4- Houston v Rocky Mtn
Houston...we have a problem. And that problem will be front and center. It is called Rocky Mtn and the Rocks are for real. There's no doubt that HOU have gone up against some excellent teams in recent memory. Such as PPDD, Rosies, B.A.D., the Beans, lovely Charm City and TX. Woah!! Thats a ridiculous stretch for any team to try to live thru. Houston are 3-7 in '08 and have to be somewhat spent. The Rocks by way of comparison are 5-2 and only lost to Windy and Lovely Charm. AND they defeated the Pikes 111-80 in a great bout. Rocky Mtn are sooooo on their way up the ranks of Derby. They will control this one from the start and move to the next round brimming with confidence and will. I would be a tad worried if my team were to face this squad in round 2.
In the end I would have to say that Rocky would be my odds on favorites to do serious damage in this first day of Western Regionals play but my sympathetic pick would have to be the Rosies. There just something about Rose City...something thats been building and building and may be ready to explode in this Western Regionals Tournament. For damn sure they shouldnt be taken for granted in the next round. Not that any team thats been paying attention WOULD. Love those Roses.
Very nice!
Excellent, thoughtful write-up, Biker Dave! You have just gone up in the rankings of my respected derby commentators. Haheh!
I must confess to having been an eastern division socialite this past year (as derby has gradually consumed my life like a parasite that blows instead of sucks), so I must admit that many of these western division teams are quite abstract to me. (i.e. I have NEVER seen any of them play, except KC.)
This is why I really appreciate the great write-ups, on DNN and elsewhere, leading up to this tournament; all of this information has really given me a sense of what is really going on, and I am very excited to see how it all plays out this weekend!
Thanks again, for a great read, Biker Dave! I am sure that there are plenty of people who disagree with your projections (sure!), and all I would say to them is "Fine, then write a better analysis and post it somewhere! I'll read it."
But in the end...
The skaters will have the final word...
And that's the way it should be.

Respectfully disagree...
Admire your points of view Dave, but not every league has the luxury of a 9 game travel season. Duke City has far less data that's recent to base a call on, but a far longer, consistent rank history since rankings began. Don't count them out so quickly. I think you're going to be surprised by what the Munecas bring to the track tomorrow. Of course, I love our girls above all others, but I love them for good reason. Our team has heart the size of which far outweighs any stats you can point to. Look at last year's East Regionals upsets - heart won the day in almost every game. Besides, Pikes Peak probably eats *food* or some fancy, nutritious shit like that... VIVA MUNECAS INDEED, MY ZEBRA!!! -love, Mercy Less

Houston had an amazing day with close games between us and PPDD. No one should underestimate them.
They have come a long way from the ECE.
And mad props to a great effort by Duke City. Wow.

I had exactly the same reaction
I was really sad that Houston couldn't quite eke out a win today, because their level of play has really evolved in a short period of time. I really get the sense that they made the most of their time at ECE, not just by playing a couple of good bouts, but by watching all the other derby on display and really studying it. Pay attention to Houston, this feels like a team on the rise!
Thanks!
Thank you Hurt!
Even though my girls didn't bring home a win today- I've got to say and nobody can deny it- we did really well today.
The point differentials for the first 3 bouts were wider than ours, and I have to say- we played our asses off.
And during the PPDD bout, which I was there to witness the first one in Colorado Springs in Feb- I almost fainted.
It was so back and forth- I'm so proud of HRD.
nobody can deny that we are doing well so far this weekend.
I'm so pleased and so proud to see my league this weekend- and I hope everyone is enjoying themselves so far.
So far, so many of my "predictions" were off- i'm really amazed!
VERY exciting weekend! SO glad DNN is here!
GO HRD!

This is somewhat random but does anyone know about the Denver girl that apparently broke her collarbone in 3 places and went into surgery today?
At least that was what I was told.
Denver also blew me away today.
Let alone Duke City. That was just.... I mean..... I know some people saw it but let's be honest- that was an upset late in the evening and I was really blown away.
Death Ro is incredible, let alone Miss E.Vil, who I knew would be whoopin' ass left and right.
Abbey Rogue
Abbey from Denver was back on the sidelines watching the incredible KC v. Duke City bout--she's scheduled to have surgery next week sometime. I'm sure she'd thank you for your concern; she's so tough and she'll be back to skating form soon, I hope.
Duke City is one of DRD's faves; they're amazing skaters and great people. I'm constantly blown away by Muffin and Kamikaze Kim... And their pack? Unbelievable. Best bout of the tourney so far.
All of the Colorado teams
All of the Colorado teams have done well. Each team has a loss under their belt but a win too and theirs more derby to play. Go CO!

My take...
I had a feeling there'd be some unexpected outcomes at Western Regionals. This year's Western Regionals are more like last year's Easterns. There's leagues out here that are kind of question marks.
I suspect that next week's Eastern Regionals are going to be a bit more predictable.
Consolation bouts for both may get all kinds of interesting, particularly in the West where KCRW is there unexpectedly, and some high elevation teams may go in there a bit more ready for more skating than their competition are.
