FORT WAYNE, IN -- Seven teams battled in out in the Fall Brawl’s non-WFTDA championship. Hammer City had a bye in the 1st round and ended up playing Team Unicorn twice and the Chicago Outfit twice while Team Unicorn played a total of five games on the day, the most of any team at the tournament. This was a double-elimination tournament and so teams in the non-WFTDA bracket were not eliminated until they had lost twice. The Chicago Outfit, who finished last in Fall Brawl 2007, captured the non-WFTDA crown in 2008 by defeating Hammer City 53-40.
Games 1-11 were each of two 10-minute halves while the championship game, Game 12, was of two 20-minute halves.
Read about the WFTDA tourney at Fall Brawl in a separate article.
Game 1: Mad Rollin’ Dolls Unicorns 49 vs. GRRG G-Rap Attack! 15
Hot New Girl gave the G-Rap Attack! a 3-0 lead in the game’s opening jam, then team Unicorn’s Rosetta Stoned came right back with a 9-0 jam 2 with a slam to give the Unicorns a lead they never lost. Team Unicorn led it 24-4 at the half and had their way with G-Rap in the 2nd half too en route to a 49-11 victory. Rosetta Stoned was the Unicorn’s leading scorer with 11 points, followed by Mel Ignant and Tango de Muerte with 9 each, Maverick and Rita Slayworth with 8 each, and Tammy Faye Undertaker with 4 points. G-Rap was led by Hot New Girl with 6 points, then came Shutter Speed with 5, Tamara Hurtsworse 3, and Foxy White 1.
Game 2: Ft. Wayne Flyin’ Squirrels 54 vs. Broward County Derby Girls 13
Jam 1 of this game went 3-3, then the Squirrels flew away from Broward County as the Florida gals couldn’t score again in the 1st half while the Squirrels were going nuts by scoring another 32 points to lead 35-3 at the half. At game’s end the Squirrels won it 54-13. Ice BreakHER led the nut-gathering, er, the scoring for the Squirrels with 21 nuts--no, make that points. Teammates Zippy D Doodah had 18, Victory’s Secret 11, and Bad Moon Rising had 4 points.
Game 3: Chicago Outfit 28 vs. OHRG Gang Green 17
It was a decidedly defensive struggle between the Chicago Outfit and the Ohio Roller Girls B-team, aka “Gang Green.” Chicago took a 3-0 lead behind Sweet Mary Pain in the opening jam, then Gang Green came right back with a 4-0 jam by Wendra Woman. But the Greensters could only muster 1 more point in the half and Chicago led it 18-5 at the break. Gang Green was able to outscore the Outfit 12-10 in the 2nd half, but Chicago held on to a 28-17 win. The Outfit’s Sweet Mary Pain led all scorers in the game with 15 points, followed by teammates Queefer Sutherland with 9 and Matza Ballbreaker with 4 points. Gang Green was led by Pippi RipYourStockings (formerly of Ohio’s “A” travel team) with 12 points. Wendra Woman had 5 points for GG.
Game 4: Hammer City Roller Girls 41 vs. Mad Rollin’ Dolls Unicorns 11
Team Unicorn took the lead 2-0 in the opening jam, then Hammer City’s Carla Coma came back with a 9-0 jam as Hammer City led it 17-3 at the half before winning 41-11. Hammer City totally stifled the Unicorns. Could it be that the Unicorn horns looked like nails waiting to be driven down? The highlight of the game for the Unicorns was Tango de Muerte scoring a grand slam in the 2nd half, although Hammer City scored a total of 4 slams in the game. Carla Coma scored 27 points for Hamilton, trailed by Cutoff with 8, and Cheese Grater and Vicadoom each with 3 points. Tango de Muerte led the Unicorns with 6 points, followed by Tammy Faye Undertaker with 3 and Rita Slayworth with 2 points.
Game 5: Chicago Outfit 52 vs. Ft. Wayne Flyin’ Squirrels 7
The Flyin’ Squirrels were brought down to earth and dropped into the loser’s bracket of the tourney by the Chicago Outfit, 52-7. Chicago led it 27-0 at the half with the Outfit scoring in all but one of the 1st half’s 8 jams. Sweet Mary Pain once again led the Outfit in scoring, this time with 30 points, including a 14 point jam to open the 2nd half. Other Outfit scorers were Queefer Sutherland with 12, Matza Ballbreaker with 7, and Lola Blow with 3 points. Team Unicorn’s scoring was by Victory’s Secret with 6 points and Dodger L Bows with 1 point.
Game 6: OHRG Gang Green 59 (58?) vs. GRRG G-Rap Attack! 20
Gang Green simultaneously avoided elimination while dealing the G-Rap Attack! a 2nd loss and a quick exit from the Fall Brawl, Gang Green winning 58-20. The scoreboard read 59-20, but the score sheets only tallied up 58 points for the Green. No matter. Gang Green took a 9-1 lead in the game’s premiere jam and led 30-2 at the half. Wendra Woman led GG with 32 points (not bad in a 20-minute game!), followed by Pippi RipYourStockings with 17 and Crash Test Bunny with 9 points. G-Rap got 10 points each from Costa Lotta Chaos and Hot New Girl.
Game 7: Ft. Wayne Flyin’ Squirrels 20 vs. Broward County Derby Girls 16
The Flyin’ Squirrels pounded Broward County 54-13 in a first-round game, but now with both teams facing elimination the Broward County girls were a changed team as they battled the Squirrels down to the wire before finally succumbing 20-16. The Squirrels were held to only 5 points in the 1st half before staging a rally in the 2nd half to pull out the game. Victory’s Secret led the scoring for the Squirrels with 13 points, followed by Dodger L Bows with 5 and Bad Moon Rising with 2 points. Unfortunately, I don’t have the scoring for Broward County.
Game 8: Mad Rollin’ Dolls Unicorns 37 vs. OHRG Gang Green 35
This was another very close game, and a seesaw battle too. Team Unicorn took the opening jam 4-3, then Gang Green bounced back with 6-0 jam win by Wendra Woman to lead 9-4. A 5-0 jam for the Unicorn’s Mel Ignant tied the game at 9-9. Jam 4 went to the Unicorns 4-3, then they also won jam 6 by 4-0 behind Mel to lead 17-12 (jam 5 was scoreless). But Gang Green’s Pippi RipYourStockings with a 4-0 jam pulled GG to within 17-16 at half-time.
Gang Green opened the 2nd half with 9-0 (with a slam) and 4-0 jams by Wendra Woman and Pippi to take a 29-17 lead. Jam 3 tied at 4-4, and the Unicorns won jam 4 by 2-0 to cut the GG lead to 10 points at 33-23. Tango de Muerte then pulled off a 9-2 jam 5 (with a slam) to cut the GG lead to 35-32. Then in the game’s final jam, Team Unicorn’s Mel Ignant skated to a 5-0 slam win to give the Unicorns a come from behind 35-32 victory, thus eliminating a scrappy Gang Green from the tourney.
In a losing cause, Pippi RipYourStockings was the leading scorer in the game with 16 points with teammates Wendra Woman with 15 and Harley Ryder with 4 points. Mel Ignant led the Unicorns with 14 points followed by Tango de Muerte with 9, Rita Slayworth with 6, and Maverick and Tammy Faye Undertaker each with 4 points.
Game 9: Chicago Outfit 31 vs. Hammer City Roller Girls 21
Both teams played a tough defensive style in the 1st half. Hammer City could only score 8 points in the half, scoring in only 2 of the period’s 7 jams. Chicago did marginally better, scoring 13 points, although they were shut out in 4 of the period’s jams. Play opened up a bit in the 2nd half. HC’s Vicadoom tied the score at 13-13 with a 5-0 slam to open the final half. Matza Ballbreaker put Chicago back on top 16-13 in the next jam, then Cheese Grater put Hammer City on top again 17-16 in jam 3. Then the Outfit’s Sweet Mary Pain pulled off the jam of the game, a 13-0 huge gem of a jam with two grand slams to put Chi-town on top to stay, 29-17. Neither team could score in the next two jams, and in the final jam of the game HC won it 4-2, but it was too little, too late, and the Chicago Outfit had outlasted Hammer City to win 31-21.
Game 10: Mad Rollin’ Dolls Unicorns 54 vs. Ft. Wayne Flyin’ Squirrels 26
Team Unicorn from Madison, WI, blew open a tight game in the 2nd half to win going away, 54-26, but they only led 19-16 at the half. The Unicorns got 6 grand slams in the 2nd half to go with their 3 slams in the 1st half while they held the Flyin’ Squirrels to only 10 points in the final frame. Team Unicorn was led by Maverick and Tammy Faye Undertaker with 15 points and 3 slams each. Allie Gator had 9 points and a slam, Mel Ignant and Rita Slayworth contributed 5 points and 1 slam each, Rosetta Stoned had 4, and Tango de Muerte scored 1 point. Victory’s Secret paced the Flyin’ Squirrels with 12 points (and a slam), followed by Dodger L Bows with 8, and Bad Moon Rising and Chola Pistola with 3 points each.
Game 11: Hammer City Roller Girls 37 vs. Mad Rollin’ Dolls Unicorns 7
In a quirk of the non-WFTDA bracket, Team Unicorn had to play Hammer City again. This game was deja vu as Hammer City once again won easily, this time by 37-7. Team Unicorn went from scoring 54 points versus the Flyin’ Squirrels to getting shut out at halftime 26-0 in this game. The Unicorns did put up a good fight in the 2nd half as Hammer City only outscored them by an 11-7 count in that half. Cheese Grater led the Canadian attack with 13 points, Carla Coma had 12, Cutoff 9, and Vicadoom 3 points. The Unicorn scoring was by Dee Toure with 4 and Mel Ignant with 3 points.
Ref Jam: White 43, Black 36
Due to popular demand, the highly entertaining “Ref Jam” from Fall Brawl 2007 was back in 2008. Most, but not all, of the male referees in attendance, as well as some of the male coaches from some of the teams participated in the Ref Jam. Since referees generally wear black and white stripes, the teams were divided into the Black (shirted) and White (shirted) teams. When the dust settled, the White team had defeated the Black team 43-36 in a game that was played in two 10-minute halves, just like the preliminary-round games at the Fall Brawl tournament. The White team led 17-14 at the half, and were helped to the victory by a 10 point jam early from Iggy Slop and an 11 point jam midway through the final half by Bilbo T. Baggins. I’m proud to say both of those skaters are regular referees from the Detroit Derby Girls, so they did some fine representin’.
The Black team held the White team scoreless in 5 of the 1st period’s 8 jams, also 4 of the 2nd half’s 9 jams. But the two large jams noted above were the difference in the game. Subtract those 21 points by Iggy and Bilbo and the score would have been 36-22 for the Black team. Ah, but that’s the beauty of derby, one must count all of the points in all of the jams, n’est-pas?
It was interesting keeping track of the jams at the announcer’s table, as there didn’t seem to be any one announcer or stats person, myself included, who knew all of the Ref Jam participants by sight as not all skaters had their names on their shirts; however, between us we pretty much figured out who they all were and so the announcers mostly got the names right.
1st Half
Black started Cincinnati coach Quad Almighty at jammer, and he won a narrow 4-3 jam victory over Grand Raggidy coach Wheels McGee. Jam 2 is where Iggy Slop, Detroit ref skating for White, ripped off his 10-0 double grand slam jam to put White up to stay, 13-4. Black then went on a run in jams 3-5, shutting out White while Black’s Roller Dex (Naptown), Magnum p.i.m.p. (Arch Rival ref), and Roller Dex (again) won the jams by 3-0, 3-0, and 2-0 scores, respectively. That left White leading by only 13-12. Bodies were flying and falling all over the track, and a highlight was when Bat Wing (CoMo Derby Dames ref), jamming for White in jam 5, tried to high-jump around the inside of the pack on the inside of a turn. Unfortunately for Bat Wing, he ended up like a bat that had been swatted with a tennis racket as he went sprawling into the infield with the crowd-pleasing move.
Whippin’ Boy from Grand Raggidy then gave White a 4-1 jam win in jam 6 to up the White lead to 17-13. Jam 7 was scoreless, and Black eked out a 1-0 win by Roller Dex in the final jam of the half to arrive at the White 17, Black 14 score. In that final jam of the half, both jammers were abused severely. Roller Dex was shouldered down to the concrete by Ref Raf (Windy City ref), and White’s Iggy Slop was nailed by Magnum p.i.m.p.
2nd Half
Quad Almighty started off the 2nd half the way he started the 1st, with a 4-3 jam win for Black, this time over Bat Wing. Whippin’ Boy got the point back for White with a 3-2 win in jam 2 over Roller Dex. Jam 3 was scoreless, although full of hitting. Wheels McGee then won jam 4 by 4-0, making the score 27-20 for White.
Jam 5 was a full ride of two minutes as neither jammer could get lead. When it was over, Bilbo T. Baggins (Detroit ref) had bested Magnum p.i.m.p. by an 11-5 count, upping the score to 38-25 for White. Bat Wing helped pile on the score for White with a 5-0 win in the next jam to make it look like White was putting the game out of reach at 43-25.
But Black wasn’t through. Jam 7 was without result (scoreboard-wise, there were at least a few fresh bruises earned in the jam), and then in jam 8 Roller Dex put up a very quick 4-0 jam to pull the score back to 43-29. That jam started with only 48.5 seconds on the clock, and when it ended Black called time-out with still 3.1 seconds left, meaning under the WFTDA 3.1 rules they would get another jam in.
Quad Almighty gave it the old college try for Black, scoring a grand slam and 2 more points en route to a 7-0 jam win in that final jam, but still fell a little short as White held on for a 43-36 win.
Scoring
Quad Almighty of Black led all scorers with 15 points, followed by teammate Roller Dex with 12. Magnum p.i.m.p. had 9 tallies in the game. James Blond (Mad Rollin’ Dolls) jammed once for no score, as did a couple of other refs whose names I did not catch.
White was led by Bilbo T. Baggins with 11 points, then came Iggy Slop with 10, Bat Wing 8, Wheels McGee 7, and Whippin’ Boy 3.
There were numerous other refs and coaches who played in this game, I’m sorry in the confusion I didn’t record all of their names. Chalk it up to the fatigue factor of watching so many games in a single day, I guess, but I promise it won’t happen again!
The guys were bangin’ away at each other, and while the packs were not well-organized, as might be expected in a “pick-up” game, some of the individual play was very good. I was impressed by Paul Bearer, coach of Hammer City, who was throwing his weight around like an old-time hockey defenseman (or defenceman, as they would spell it in Canada, eh?).
Quad Almighty also asked me to give a shameless plug for Midwest Men’s Roller Derby (MMRD), so if you’re interested in playing or watching, check them out at http://www.myspace.com/midwestmensrollerderby.
The non-WFTDA championship game was played with two 20-minute halves.
Game 12: Chicago Outfit 53 vs. Hammer City Roller Girls 40 (non-WFTDA championship)
Hammer City got to play two games against Team Unicorn, both of which resulted in easy victories. Now Hammer City got to play the Chicago Outfit for the second time. In the first match up, it was close all the way until Chicago pulled it out with a huge 13 point jam by Sweet Mary Pain. This time Chicago didn’t get the one big put-away jam in the 2nd half, although they did balance allowing a couple of 9-point Hammer City jams with shutting down and shutting out the HC offense in 8 of the 2nd half’s 12 jams. Chicago also shut out HC in the last 8 jams of the 1st half. Chicago did lead 21-16 at halftime before finally winning 53-40, giving them the Fall Brawl non-WFTDA bracket tourney title. It was quite an accomplishment for the relatively new Outfit, and somewhat erased their memory of finishing last in the 2007 Fall Brawl.
One thing that stood out in this game were numerous non-calls on blockers who were clearly out of play by virtue of being considerably more than 20 feet in front of the pack. Although both teams benefited and were hurt by the non-calls, it seemed that Chicago was just a little bigger, a little faster, and their blockers just ever so slightly more tenacious and that’s why Chicago was able to gain the victory.
1st Half
Chicago started Smashley Distructo at pivot, Lola Blow, Althea N Hell, and Matza Ballbreaker at blocker, and Sweet Mary Pain at jammer. Hammer City countered with a lineup of Perky Set at pivot, Miss Carriage, Cutoff, and Tori Nado at blocker, and jammer Cheese Grater. Sweet Mary got lead jammer, came around to score 2 points, then got held up in the pack and had to call it when Cheese caught up to the back of the pack. Carla Coma then put the gals from the Great White North into the lead with a 4-1 jam 2 victory. HC’s blockers performed well in pinching Chicago’s blockers to the inside to enable Carla an easy pass to score on the outside. The Outfit’s Matza Ballbreaker jammed against Cheese Grater in jam 3, neither jammer earning the lead. Both jammers scored 4 points, then Matza was tossed into the sin bin along with one of her blockers. Cheese took advantage and scored another 4 points, winning the jam 8-4 and giving HC a 12-7 lead.
Carla Coma extended the HC lead to 16-7 with a 4-0 jam win in jam 4. The Outfit’s jammer Matza was still in the box at the start of the jam, and by the time she got back on the track Carla had scored and called the jam. Jam 5 was scoreless. Queefer Sutherland got through the pack first but was waved off for the lead. When Vicadoom got lead for HC she quickly called the jam off.
Sweet Mary Pain got lead jammer for Chicago in jam 6 by simply powering her way past the Hammer City blockers. HC’s jammer, Cheese Grater, got trapped in the pack and so dropped back behind the pack to try to block Mary. Cheese did get passed, but Mary only got credited for four points on the jam which tightened the score to 16-11, favor HC. Jam 7 featured more hard hitting. HC’s Ivy Rupted got a major penalty for depositing Queefer Sutherland into the infield, then HC’s jammer Carla Coma also got dumped. Shortly thereafter Carla was sent to the box for cutting the track around Althea N Hell, then Queefer was also sent to the box and so the jammerless jam was stopped by the officials.
Each team then gave a non-jammer a chance to wear the star with Chicago’s Maul E Hatchet going against Dicey for HC. Maul got through the pack first but was not lead jammer, and Dicey was sent to the box. Maul got 2 points then was knocked down by Ivy Rupted. Then Dicey came out of the box, got lead jammer, and called the jam. HC still led, 16-13. Evidently the refs missed Dicey going to and coming out of the penalty box, for WFTDA 3.1 rule #3.4.5 states “A Jammer sent to the penalty box while making her initial pass through the pack is not eligible to become Lead Jammer upon re-entering the jam.”
Jam 9 was another scoreless jam. Both jammers had difficulty getting through the pack, then when Cheese Grater emerged from the pack with the lead she immediately called the jam. Sweet Mary Pain propelled Chicago into a 17-16 lead with a 4-0 jam win in jam 10. HC’s Carla Coma shrewdly bumped Mary into the infield right off the jammer start line, which forfeited any chance Mary had to become lead jammer. HC’s Judge Jodie got sent to the box for a takedown of Maul E Hatchet, then things happened fast. Mary got a nice whip from a teammate, but that teammate had been containing Carla in the pack, and that allowed Carla to get by and grab lead jammer, although when Carla called the jam Mary had already scored her 4 points.
Jam 11 was the 4th scoreless jam in the 1st half. There was a major pileup on the track, and two Hammer City skaters took a little too long to get back on their skates, and so the referees stopped the jam in interest of skater safety, although there appeared to be some confusion as some players evidently didn’t hear the whistle the first time. Sweet Mary Pain then did it again, putting up another 4-0 jam win to end the half, taking advantage of a split pack situation. The Chicago outfit led at the half, 21-16.
2nd Half
Cheese Grater started the 2nd half by getting lead jammer for Hammer City; however, on her scoring try she got hung up on the back of the pack and totally forgot about the Outfit’s jammer, Lola Blow, who caught up and passed Cheese and the rest of the pack for a surprise 5-0 grand slam win in spite of Cheese having the lead. That put Chicago up by 10 points at 26-16.
Jam 2 was a wild one. Neither jammer could get the lead. At one point HC’s jammer Carla Coma was being held up by an obviously out of play blocker who was at least 30 or 40 feet in front of the pack, yet none of the refs made a penalty call on the blocker. Hammer City’s coach, Paul Bearer, was so incensed he slammed down his clipboard on the floor, and the crowd was getting vocal, too. When the jam was said and done, Carla had tallied 9 points with a slam, but the Chicago jammer, Queefer Sutherland, got 8 points so that only cut the Chicago lead to 9 points at 34-25. Initially the refs were only going to give Queefer 4 points, but then they changed their minds and gave her 8.
Hammer City was fortunate that jam 3 was scoreless, as they started with two blockers in the penalty box. Smashley Distructo blocked Perky Set to give Chi-town jammer Lola Blow the lead just ahead of Cheese Grater, but then Lola quickly called the jam. Queefer Sutherland got a 2-0 jam 4 win for Chicago. She got lead, was almost a lap ahead of Carla Coma, but was held up by two obviously out of play Hammer City blockers, so called the jam when Carla caught up.
Vicadoom got the lead for Hammer City in jam 5, then on the scoring pass the pack became totally disorganized and in the confusion Lola Blow snuck through to win the jam 3-2 for Chicago. Sweet Mary Pain put up her 4th 4-0 jam of the game in jam 6. Mary called the jam after she finally passed two out of play Hammer City blockers. There wasn’t any call on those blockers this time, either. It could be both teams figured if the refs weren’t calling the out of play blockers, then you might as well do it. It was 43-27 for Chicago, and Hammer City took a time out.
Carla Coma got through the pack first in jam 7, but as she came around and was about to score, Queefer Sutherland got lead and quickly called the jam with no score. Matza Ballbreaker was heading to the jammer line for jam 8, but the officials decided she had committed a 4th minor penalty in the previous jam and so she was sent to sit for a minute in the place where bad girls go to sit. Lola Blow took her place wearing the star. No matter, as Cheese Grater was on fire, scoring a 9-0 jam victory with a grand slam in spite of Lola trying to drop back to block. Smashley Distructo at one point was well out of play (too far in front of the pack) and then had to let Cheese by as the Hammer City bench were all yelling to attract the refs attention. That made the game very interesting as suddenly the Outfit were only leading 43-36, and the officials called a time out with 5:04 showing on the clock.
Carla Coma got another lead jammer for HC in jam 9, having to work her way around Matza Ballbreaker to do so. Carla was so intent on scoring that she didn’t call the jam when Sweet Mary Pain came around to catch her and also score. Mary had skated hard to catch Carla, and the jam ended in a 4-4 deadlock. The Outfit still led by 7 points, 47-40. Queefer Sutherland then put up a 2-0 jam win for Chicago to make it 49-40 with only 1:50 left on the clock. Queefer appeared to get away with a punch at a HC blocker who was trying to haul her down to the track--yes, the game was still quite physical.
Matza Ballbreaker got lead jammer when HC’s Perky Set was finally called for an out of play block, Perky being sent to the box. Matza went around to win jam 11 by 4-0, but she called the jam too soon and there was still enough time for another jam. She could have salted the game away by just letting the clock run down.
That meant that the final jam got under way with Chicago leading by 13 points, a not perfectly safe lead in derby. Both teams sent out their best to jam, Sweet Mary Pain for Chicago versus Carla Coma for Hammer City. Carla did her part by out dragging Mary to get lead jammer, but to everyone’s surprise there was only 1 Hammer City blocker on the track with Carla. There was no way to contain the Chicago pack and so the Outfit’s blockers pulled the old-school derby trick of a breakaway--they all skated as fast as they could, not caring if there was a split pack call or not as there was no way Carla would have been able to lap and pass the pack enough times to make up the 13 points.
Time expired, and Chicago held on to win the non-WFTDA title at Fall Brawl 2008 by 53-40 over a never-say-die Hammer City club in a very entertaining game.
Statistics
Sweet Mary Pain was the leading scorer for Chicago, and also clearly the game MVP. She scored 22 points in 7 jams, grabbing 4 leads. She also outscored Hammer City by 18 points, only allowing HC jammers to score 4 points against her. Other Chicago scorers were: Queefer Sutherland (13 points, 8 jams, 4 leads); Lola Blow (8 pts, 4 jams, 1 lead, 1 slam); Matza Ballbreaker (8 pts, 4 jams, 1 lead); Maul E Hatchet (2 pts, 1 jam).
Hammer City was led by Carla Coma with 21 points while jamming 9 times with 4 leads and 1 slam. Other HC jammers were: Cheese Grater (17 points, 10 jams, 3 leads, 1 slam); Vicadoom (2 pts, 4 jams, 2 leads); Dicey (0 pts, 1 jam, 1 lead).
Afterthoughts
Although it was non-WFTDA, this was still a very good game. Both teams showed a lot of heart, and played strong defense. The jammers only managed to get 3 grand slams in the game between the two teams, and there were many jams where either one or both teams failed to score at all.
Perhaps the biggest factor in the game was the Outfit slamming the door after jam 4 in the 1st half and not allowing Hammer City to score in jams 5-12. That was quite an impressive feat. It seemed Hammer City could have benefited by using another jammer at times, and was surprised that Perky Set never donned the star as she scored 14 points in a game versus Killamazoo.
In any event, these two teams will meet for a third time, on Chicago’s turf, on Saturday, October 11. It should be even more of a grinding game as it will be for a full 60 minutes.
A couple of corrections on
A couple of corrections on the ref jam info pertaining to the skaters league affiliations (probably not even worth worrying about) --
Magnum is the COACH (not a ref) for Arch Rival as far as Fall Brawl is concerned (though he refs their intraleague bouts).
Ref Raf... is he still affiliated with WCR? I thought not.
As of this coming weekend I will be a card-carrying member of the Northwest Arkansas Roller Girls (AWESOME!!!), but I guess I'll be a CoMo guy for now. LOl.
Thanks a lot for doing this writeup, Rusty!

Thanks for the corrections!
I don't know everyone's affiliations, so thanks for the corrections (which are always welcomed). I thought putting Ref Raf as being from Chicago sounded better than "parts unknown" as I thought "parts unknown" was the town where all of the masked pro wrestlers came from.

Parts Unknown
Don't forget the facepainted wrestlers too, Rusty.
They feel politically marginalized by the hegemony of the luchadors as is.
Don't forget...
The Moondogs were also from "Parts Unknown." Rex, King and on occasion when one of the other two peroxide whites couldn't make it, Spot. Though I don't think the belt could be won from them when Spot was in the squared circle. I don't know how they thought we could tell them apart.
OK, now I've completely embarrassed myself. I was really only watching them because Capt. Lou Albano was there. I'm still contemplating putting rubber bands in my goatee at some point. With that, the silly hat, and a golf club I could basically embody the holy trinity.

Another incredibly detailed recap Rusty!! Nice work man. Do I need to say how much I love Hammer City? Yeah...I thought not. Carla Coma rocks. But after what I've seen from that "other" team in Windy City, the Chicago Outfit, I think I may have to add them to the fave list. Up n comers!! Excellent effort from those Outfit skaters!
A dear friend of mine...
Hey Biker Dave, did you ever see the great Roger Corman flick from the 1970s, "Death Race 2000"? You sort of remind me of one of the race announcers in that flick, Grace Pander. Grace was always dropping names of famous folks, and she would say about each and every one, "... a dear friend of mine..."! It seems like *every* league is your favorite! :-) You either gotta pick ONE to the THE favorite, or else do like I do and don't play favorites at all. :-)

Yeah yeah yeah...I'm such a hopeless Derby addict. I HAVE seen Deathrace 2000 BTW. I may have several teams that I just love to watch and enjoy hanging out with at the after party but I have only one "true love". Naptown baby! (I have been known to flirt excessively with Brew City tho. Sssshhhh! Dont tell on me Rusty).
Neigh
I'm so proud of our team - it really is about having fun for us, and Team Unicorn had a fantastic time. Thanks to Ft Wayne for allowing us the opportunity to play so many great teams, and congrats to the Chicago Outfit.
We've been told we need a horn on our helmet cover to play next year, so keep an eye out for that!
Hit her with the glitter,
Billie
By 'keep an eye out' I hope you don't mean 'POKE an eye out'!

Just make sure is is a fabric/sponge horn that will not poke anyone and hurt them.
That would be hilarious though. Silly Wisconsin girls!

Great write up!
Thanks for the great write up! HCRG really needs someone like yourself to do write ups for us! Sorry for dissapointing you in not donning the star cap. I'm not normally a jammer (we were down in Kallamazoo so I had to step up to the position).
Cheers,
Perky
Oct 11 in Chicago
Well, Perky, it appears I will not be able to attend the WDTDA east regionals in October, so that means I'm planning on attending the Hammer City game vs. the Chicago Outfit on October 11 in Chicago. So it looks like you'll get at least one more write-up out of me. :-) If you have any aspiring derby-journalists, bring them with you to that game so I can show them my "system" for gathering notes during a game.

Beg to Differ
One point on which to contend your review.
"Queefer appeared to get away with a punch at a HC blocker who was trying to haul her down to the track--yes, the game was still quite physical."
No way were punches thrown. Absolutely not.
You missed it!
You must have missed it. It wasn't a real serious punch, it was sort of a punch-slap you do to a dog who is trying to attach itself to your leg. But it did happen. Ask Queefer!
I also had a couple of audio interviews with two Chicago Outfit skaters, Althea N Hell and Sweet Mary Pain, from Fall Brawl. Justice/Hurt, is there any way to get those interviews up on DNN?

I did ask Queefs! Or
I did ask Queefs! Or actually I heard about the comment from her, I missed it on the first pass but then she said something about it and I had to see for myself.
She wouldn't hurt a fly! :)
Outfit, Outfit! Kill! Kill! Kill!
Ref Jam...
I've never seen a Ref Jam in person, but they sound awesome! Atlanta's planning one this fall and I cannot wait to witness it!
Outfit is a team to watch
The Chicago Outfit have built a team of talent and great defensive skills. Toss in some amazing jammers and watch out.
They have my support both on and off the track!!!
I'd just like to point out
I'd just like to point out that i told Bob Noxious before the tourney that the Outfit were gonna win the non-WFTDA bracket...my new career as a high-stakes riverboat gambler is now certainly assured.
The visual of Master Baker
The visual of Master Baker in a GRRG All-Stars jersey is both adorable and something I may never recover from.
I'd like to add that the Chicago Outfit were winning that title at the same time that WCR was upsetting Kansas City. I like to call it The Night Chicago Derby Ruled the World. So proud of everyone!
