ENFIELD, CT -- Baltimore and Massachusetts combine forces for a derby invasion of Connecticut on Saturday night in a male/female doubleheader. Pioneer Valley Roller Derby's female squad, Western Mass Destruction, takes on Female Trouble, the B team from Charm City, while the PVRD male contingent, the Dirty Dozen, faces off in a rematch with Charm City's brother league, the Harm City Homicide.
Final rosters for the female half were not available at press time, but Female Trouble looks to be sending up a short roster of 8 or 9 players. FT's lineup tends to dramatically change on every outing, so it's tough to tell the strength of this particular crew. In the past, Female Trouble has mostly played short expos - they lost to the DC all-stars in a 20 minute pregame bout in March and thumped the Mason-Dixon all-stars in August, but just two weeks ago, they were taken apart by Dutchland in their only full-length bout to date.
One all-star definitely making the trip is Frenzy Lohan, who is an original Charm City member from the league's April 2006 debut but has been making serious new strides this season with hugely effective positional blocking. She'll be joined by two teammates from her home team Night Terrors -- Minnie Piledriver, who has proven herself a resilient jammer, and Venus O. Killendorf, looking to expand her experience after debuting just last weekend in Charm City's playoff. Also making the trip are Essie Ecks, Flux Incapacitator, an extraordinarily feisty jammer in the indomitable Killer Kitten, and a guest from the DC Rollergirls in X-abitchinest.
For Western Mass Destruction, look for Nora Morse to be a major factor on the jam line, while Big Vinny's Kid, Piss n' Mona and Pittstop are imposing blockers that consistently find a way to take their opponents off their skates.
For the men of the Harm City Homicide, this matchup is a major milestone in their evolution, as it comes almost exactly a year since the original Dirty Dozen / Homicide bout that served as Harm City's debut. In that bout, Harm City held on to a narrow 30-26 lead going into the halftime, but endurance troubles and an explosive late-game performance from the Dirty Dozen's Dr. Spankenstein would consign the Homicide to a 100-67 loss in the end.
Harm City hopes to make this bout their first public win. They've only played as a team on two other occasions, both in lopsided losses to the current kings of the region's male derby scene, the New York Shock Exchange. In October 2007, they were steamrolled 97-14 in a 20 minute expo that took place during Charm City's championship bout; more recently, in June 2008, they challenged the Shock Exchange in the first 60 minute men's bout and lost again, 147-49.
Pioneer Valley has also lost in each of the three 40-minute bouts in which they have faced the Shock Exchange -- in May of 2007, they went down 109-51 and in May of 2008, they were dropped 125-44. Most recently, though, they gave the NYSE their toughest challenge yet in a heavily defensive bout that went 69-46 for the boys from the Big Apple. The Dirty Dozen has four public wins to its name, though -- in addition to their defeat of Homicide, they have two victories over the Diamond City Death Kings and one over the Connecticut Death Quads.
The Dirty Dozen is just short of a dozen this time, suiting up 11 players. The powerful Dr. Spankenstein and lightning-fast Jurasskick Park are sure to be important elements at the jammer line, while The Rev, Davy Jones and Crash Daily are all original PVRD members known for thunderous blocking.
Homicide has lost one of their most imposing blockers, Carpe Demon, to a move since their NYSE bout, but the rest of the crew remains intact. Baltimore's boys are a diverse posse that features the nightmarish hitting of Sex Ed and Sin Diesel, speedy, agile jamming from the angular Virginia Slim and Justice Feelgood Marshall, and, perhaps most demoralizing for opposing teams, the devastatingly good looks of ultra-dreamy Deustch Bag.

Dissed!
Justice writes "The Dirty Dozen does have one public win to its name, though,"
Allow me to nitpick in the name of the Dirty Dozen. We have 4 wins, all in public:
Once against HCH (9/8/07), twice against the Death Kings (4/19/08 and 7/20/08) and once against the CT Death quads (7/12/08). All were 40 minute bouts (2x20) save for the 7/20/08, which was 60 minutes.
Thank you,

Oops, sorry about that
It was a very long night of writing, which may or may not have included a significant amount of drinking. Fixed.

Hey, pal! Great to see you on the forum. We really missed you at the Ref Jam in Ft. Wayne last weekend. (Well, I didn't miss your vicious blocking - and I am sure they would have put us on opposite teams. LOl!) I captained Team White to a narrow victory in the 2 X 20 minute men's expo bout, skating against most of the monsters (who wore.... black - surprise!), I might add, BUT with some great help on the white team offense from a couple of the male refs from Grand Raggedy who could jam like pros. It was a lot of fun! Hopefully a decent video will surface at some point. There were a few cameras set-up around the track.
Hope this Harm-Pioneer bout went well, boys. Can't wait to read the recap! Glad to hear men's derby is going strong in the Northeast!

Thanks
Thank you for the kind words, Bat Wing. Congrats on the victory at Fall Brawl II! I look forward to seeing pictures and video.
No question that Harm City/Pioneer Valley was awesome.
Pioneer Valley
More details coming later, but Pioneer Valley won both bouts: 80 to 73 in Dirty Dozen vs. Homicide and 77 to 65 in Western Mass Destruction vs. Female Trouble. Both bouts were in question til the last jam, with Homicide down by 3 and Female Trouble down by 12 when they started; however, the PVRD jammer would get lead in both games to seal the win.
Having lost by nearly 100 points in June and having lost by 7 points last night, I'm here to tell you that losing by 7 stings WAAAAAAAY more :(
On the other hand, though it may be a derby cliche by now, I have to say that Harm City loves the hell out of Pioneer Valley, and if I HAVE to endure devastating disappointment in a heartbreaking last jam, it may as well be to them -- they are a great group of people and extraordinarily accommodating hosts, in addition to being pretty darn good at this whole roller skating thing. Cheers to all four teams on two extremely exciting bouts!

Much love to PVRD! I always
Much love to PVRD! I always prefer it when my team wins, but that bout was a blast nonetheless.

Great games!
I just about never get to watch a game anymore but Saturday was an excellent night to be able to! If I had been sitting on a seat, I would have been on edge all night!

It was quite possibly the
It was quite possibly the greatest game I have ever played. From the beginning of the first whistle there was nothing but handshakes and smiles the entire game as we all fought well and went above and beyond what Ive seen in Mens derby. The last jam was really the kicker though. It was a nailbiter and the crowd was on its feet for it and it was an amazing finish to our season. Thank you to all that came and a BIG thank you to Baltimore for making the trip and hopefully having as much fun as we did.
I love Charm City / Female Trouble / Harm City
Really, I do. There's no better feeling than playing a close, intense game then coming out of it with handshakes and hugs and without the awkwardness or hard feelings or any of those rotten side effects of competition. I can't wait to see you all again!
We Love you Baltimore!
Thank you so much for coming all the way here, 8hours for some of you! You were charming and fun to party with! Too fun!
