WFTDA Bout Preview: #15 Madison Takes On #22 Dominion

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- #15 Madison looks to continue their recent upswing as they come down from the cold upper Midwest to get it on with the young Dominion posse from Virginia Beach.

After a tough 2007 campaign for Madison in which they were unable to notch a single WFTDA win, the Dairyland Dolls have been showing considerably more fire this year. The first sign that they were on their way back was a convincing 159-74 home win over #25 Denver, but they made the definitive statement at June's ECE in Philly. There, they walloped Fort Wayne by a jaw-dropping final of 250-38, and very nearly upset highly-ranked tournament hosts #8 Philly, staying in the 106-93 bout until the closing minutes.

They did capitalize on their next opportunity for an upset, though, beating #11 Charm City at home in July in an extremely close 108-101 contest that also came down to the last few minutes. They've also got a big win over Milwaukee's neighboring Brew City, giving them a 4-2 WFTDA record for 2008.

Dominion has built up a gaudy 5-1 record going back to November of last year, but the majority of their wins have come against lowly ranked or unranked teams -- #39 Sin City, #50 Long Island, #32 Ohio, #41 Steel City and, most recently, new WFTDA addition DC. Their one test against a tournament-level team went poorly for them, as #9 Detroit easily handled them at ECE.

Dominion was short-handed for that contest with Detroit, though, only fielding 11 players and missing significant components like Turbovision, Asian Chowdown and Pretty Sk8 Machine. However, even though they're playing at home for this bout, they'll only be suiting up 12 players with none of the aforementioned players back on the roster, against a full 14 for Madison -- so the home team will have its hands full.

With Dominion holding the lowest seed in the upcoming Eastern Regionals, they'll be hoping to demonstrate that they can hang with more highly-ranked teams. Madison, on the other hand, is poised to regain their intimidating prestige from pre-Heartland Havoc, and a solid win here could only help that cause.

Guarenteed - "the Maddy" will win!

Bet yer paycheck! In the upcoming battle between Dominion and "the Maddy" those Rollin' Dolls will emerge victorious. "The Maddy" have lost twice this year: they fell to Windy City (understandable) and SHOULD have beaten Philly... but did not. Dominion on the other hand have only lost once this year...to badass Deeetroit. Their wins?? Well, they defeated 2nd tier teams such as DC, Long Island, Steel City and Sin City. Dont get me wrong, I LIKE Dominion. I think they have a bright future. But there is no damn way they get past "the Maddy". Those killer Mad Rollin' Dolls are top-notch and will show once again why they are always a top-ranked team. I'm a Brew City fan but I know who rules the Cheese-head state..."the Maddy" baby!!

dude...

with all due respect, literally every time you mention philly it's to say we should have lost. where's the love? considering we've only lost to two teams ever in WFTDA sanctioned play (titans gotham and carolina), i'd like to know what your standards of judgment are.

to clarify: not trying to start sh*t, i'm legitimately curious.

anyway - best of luck to both teams this weekend!

Correction

You also lost to our travel team back in November '06. 128-103

whoops...

you're right. i had blocked that game from my memory. =)

That was not a WFTDA

That was not a WFTDA sanctioned match...so I think the original statement is correct.

-Judge Knot, PRG

Yes it was

inasmuch as anything was sanctioned back then, that bout was sanctioned.

Yeah

By the strictest definition, no bouts at all were sanctioned until June 2008 -- they were just "regulation" or "non-regulation."

Ya know...you may be right

Ya know...you may be right Violet. I have under estimated Philly at times and certainly they are among the "elite" teams in Derby. I have often under estimated Carolina also, so I'm not just picking on Philly. I have to say that I dont remember dissing Philly in other comments/predictions but hell, I've slept since then so I may have. Let me be clear...I think Philly is an excellent team and the number of victories that they have amassed speak for themselves. Maybe I should re-examine Philly, God knows that I've had to re-examine Carolina. And my standards of judgement??? Gut instinct. I really did believe that the Maddy would defeat Philly and they seemed poised to do just that but the scoreboard doesn't lie...the Maddy went down. Didnt mean to strike a nerve. I watch ALOT of footage, I study the stats, I examine recent history and then go w/my gut instinct when I make a prediction. Usually my instinct is right, still I have been known to slip up occasionally.

it's all good...

i realize none of your opinions were negatively spirited, i was just curious as to why you always think we should have lost. =) i recall seeing you say the same about the windy city game, rose city and now madison.

anyway, it's no issue. derby skill level is growing so exponentially that nothing can be assumed anymore!

I love it!

"Derby skill level is growing so exponentially that nothing can be assumed anymore!"

Yes, Violet, it creates this really exciting dynamic where no team is ever quite 'the best', but every team in the top tier has a significant threat factor -- what the final result boils down to is who has the best night when it REALLY counts.

Just a simple illustration of the kind of dynamic I am referring to:

Team 1 > Team 2
Team 2 > Team 3
BUT...
Team 3 > Team 1

Ya dig?

It's just a whole lot different this season, I think, since the best 12 teams in the nation are probably playing as well as the final four were at nationals last year. (Just my speculation.)

I am so excited to watch how it all plays out in '08!

i LOVE when Justice puts a good write up out there to bring up conversation regarding the ever changing status of leagues and questioning the possibilities of what could happen in a bout!

DDG has come a long way in rankings in the past 9 months. January marked a great opportunity for us playing Sin City (prior to new rankings before that bout) they were actually still ranked 11 or so at that time, not down at a current #39 when we played them.
Long Island was another oddity for us as that bout was supposed to take place LAST YEAR! it was like a blind date that kept getting pushed back...we had no idea what to expect from LIRR when we went. DDG doesn't break a promise just to suit the needs of rankings. Our word is our bond! we just love to skate. :)
PRIOR to even playing Sin City and LIRR or OHIO, we were given an awesome opportunity to play Boston back in September of last year which presented a large impact for us. we seem to travel light, bringing a small roster of 12 to that bout as well. (moms have to go to work! cant always travel!)
Ohio was also ranked above us when we played them!!! and that was a great home bout!
Detroit was also a great step for us. I took it personal with that bout against myself, not feeling positive with my play, but as it turns out, that bout was probably the most educational for me. everything happens for a reason!
Madison was another under dog opportunity for the DDG as we geared up with a roster of 12; 1 skater NEVER bouting before, Van Hellion!!!!! we having just lost another Jammer to Law School, who is now skating with Brew City (post their bout against Madison). IT WAS GREAT!!!! that bout was awesome and so were their ladies!
No matter who won that bout.... i think the Dutchland Derby Girls won the after party with some rigorous Arm Wrestling!!!
I am also still very green with the ranking structure, but since we played these other leagues when they were above us and we won those games, didnt that assist us to make it to the 20's in the rankings?
I dont know if many WFTDA league realize how SMALL the DDG is! we have prospered with a league of under 20 skaters! I am proud!

Current vs past rankings

I totally feel you on the fact that those teams were ranked differently at the time you played them, but in the interest of reducing confusion, DNN usually only refers to teams by their current ranking when listing bout history (otherwise we'd get a lot of very unwieldy sentences by including both rankings, or potentially mislead readers to a team's current strength by only mentioning the ranking at the time of the bout.)

DNN is slowly but surely building up a pretty solid archive of WFTDA bout recaps, and we try to link to those when they're available, though, so you can click and see where the two teams were ranked at the time of the bout.

JFM

full disclosure

I'm actually gonna totally contradict my partner-in-DNN here, and say that what we intend to do with bout listings is to list the rankings at the time the bout occurred, but we have a little work to do yet in making the Derbymatic database spit that data out in a meaningful way. Or maybe that's just what I want to do, and Justice has another opinion entirely. Stay tuned for the resolution there.

Works for me

Hurt's official title is Managing Editor In Charge Of Knowing What the Fuck Is Going On With the Technology and I'm Managing Editor In Charge Of Writing Shit, so I defer to him on anything having to do with database integration :)

Just my 2cents...

I think it's an easier read if y'all put the rankings that were in place at the time the bout occurred vs. the current--especially with so much movement!

I don't think that saying "a win against AnyCity Rollergirls, then ranked #XXX" makes for a difficult read.

And to Tsunami Tsue-- I know that I consider the rank at the time of the game super relevant when my league works on our rankings! Y'all have worked really hard to move up so much-- it's super impressive!

xo,
Loco Chanel/ Windy City Rollers

Thank you again Justice!

Now i understand where your vision was with the bout preview regarding how those leagues were listed.

we greatly appreciate your work!!

Maybe off-topic and definitely cheesy but whatever...

I just wanted to first congratulate Madison on a bout that was not only well-played but SO much fun for everyone. Their sportswomanship was impeccable, they were gracious guests, and they really were a pleasure to host.

My husband often affectionately compares Dominion to the Bad News Bears. We currently have 13 active skaters, and after more than 3 years of establishing ourselves as a league, our skaters still sometimes seem to swirl through like a revolving door. (Thanks, Military and universities!) And yet, we keep on truckin, always with a smile, win or lose (and we've certainly done both, sometimes to an extreme). We are a small group, but we really, truly LOVE this sport and do everything we can to help it prosper, from WFTDA participation to hosting events for non-WFTDA leagues. I am so damn proud of how far we’ve come, even on teensy resources. We are that little engine.

I nearly sobbed at the end of this last bout because I’m going to miss this tight group of women so very much. (Moving to the UAE after Regionals - read my myspace blog if you want the details.) From the first day I moved to Virginia more than 2 years ago, they’ve welcomed me and so many others with that signature southern hospitality. We've clung together through wins, losses, births, marriages, divorces, even deaths. Looking around at the afterparty, it really hit me that these ladies will forever be my sisters, no matter what.

No doubt that winning is fun, but losing can be just as satisfying when you’re with such good company.

Unashamedly Gloating,

Sweet N. Lowdown

Abu Derby!!!

That's what they'll call it when Sweets brings the game to the desert of Abu Dabi! (sp?)
Thank you Sweets, and Thank You Dominion Derby Girls for an overwhelmingly fun derby filled weekend! The Commotion by the Ocean was so packed full of workshops, scimmages, and funtimes, and all in a single day! How is a pasty WI derby girl supposed to get her beachtime on? You all were marvelous hostesses, friends, and sports. Its times like these that remind me, in the midst of a very busy season, to appreciate how kickass it is to be a part of the ever-growing derby family.
To all of DDG, and all who helped out with and attended the Commotion,
Thank you.
