NORTH OLMSTEAD, OH -- The Burning River Roller Girls concluded their 2008 intraleague season with Derby 505: Stomp & Circumstance. Burning River runs all of their intraleague games as double-headers, although each game is of only two 20-minute periods, making each game only 40 minutes in length. In the first game of the evening on August 23, it was the 0-4 Rolling Pin-Ups going up against the 1-3 Cleveland Steamers in the game for 3rd place. Back on June 28 the Steamers had defeated the Pin-Ups 61-34, but this night was different as the Pin-Ups rolled out to a quick lead and won the game 78-53 to snatch 3rd place away from the Steamers.
The Pin-Ups built an early 14 point lead after 4 jams, gaining lead jammer in each of those jams. The Steamers were able to get back within 5 points after jam 6, then the Pin-Ups opened the lead again to double digits, leading by 18 at the half. The Pin-Ups had more lead jammers, 8-4, in the half, and they took advantage of that situation.
The Steamers hopes of sailing back into the game in the 2nd half went crashing on the rocks of despair as the Pin-Ups Eva Lucien opened the 2nd half with a 15-0 triple grand slam jam to extend the Pin-Ups lead to 33 points. Late in the period the Steamers cut the lead down to 23 points but time expired and the Pin-Ups had earned a hard skating victory.
Eva Lucien led all scorers in the game with 53 points, equaling her opponents’ total output. Eva also had 9 leads in her 10 jams while wearing the star, and also picked up 5 grand slams. Although Burning River does not announce MVPs of each game, it'd be hard to argue that Eva didn't deserve the honor here. In the 2nd half, the Pin-Ups continued to control lead jammer with an 8-2 edge.
1st Half
Rusty Wheeler interview with Pin-Up high scorer Eva Lucien (2:11)
The Rolling Pin-Ups started Soul Eater at pivot, Candy Snatcher, Dagney Taghurt, and Punk’d Pixie at blockers, and Eva Lucien at jammer. The Cleveland Steamers countered with pivot XRAYTED, blockers Stealth Bomber, Gonnolea, Professor Booty, and jammer Mata Hari. Eva Lucien quickly grabbed lead jammer with Mata Hari about 1/4 lap behind. After Eva scored her 4 points she called the jam, but Mata had scored 2 points of her own. The Pin-Ups led 4-2, and never trailed afterwards.
Hannah Bull jammed for the Pin-Ups in jam 2, and she rang up 3 more points to extend the lead to 7-2. Punk’d Pixie jammed next for the Pin-Ups and she scored an 8-0 grand slam jam win as the Pin-Ups blockers did an excellent job of bottling up the Steamers jammer Primp Daddy in the pack. After 3 jams the score was 15-2 in favor of the Pin-Ups.
Eva Lucien jammed again for the PUs in jam 4, and while she got lead again, her rival jammer Professor Booty was right on her heels, so Eva called off the jam after scoring only 1 point. The PUs Vix Smackey took a hard fall in the pack in this jam but was apparently none the worse for wear. It was then 16-2 for the Pin-Ups.
The Steamers mounted a comeback in the next two jams. In jam 5 Pain Austen got the Steamers 1st lead jammer of the 1st half and went on to score a 5-0 grand slam jam win over Angel N. Shadows. Then in jam 6 Primp Daddy netted a 4-0 jam win and the Steamers had cut the Pin-Ups lead to 16-11. But Eva Lucien got another lead jammer and a 4-0 win for the PUs in jam 7, followed by a 3-0 jam win for the Steamers Pain Austen in jam 8, followed by a 4-0 win for the PUs Punk’d Pixie in jam 9. It was still a 24-14 game for the Pin-Ups.
Jam 10 was easily the most exciting jam of the half. It opened with the Steamers Prof. Booty zooming around the outside of the pack to grab lead jammer. Then she came around to score 4 points but didn’t call the jam, so that allowed the PUs jammer Eva Lucien to also score 4 points. The next scoring lap Booty got another 3 points then got bottled up, so she passed the star to her pivot Mata Hari. Mata made it around for another scoring pass where she picked up 4 points. Of course when the Steamers passed the star they forfeited lead jammer and so couldn’t call off the jam. That meant that Eva Lucien scored a total of 11 points of her own on the jam which ended the jam as an 11-11 stalemate. In the jam Booty harpooned a total of 7 points and Mata 4.
The Pin-Ups extended their then 10 point lead (35-25) to 18 points by the end of the period by shutting out the Steamers in the last three jams of the half, although the very last jam was only 5 seconds long and so didn’t really count. The PUs managed to roll up a 3-0 win in jam 11 for Angel N. Shadows followed by a 5-0 slam win in jam 12 for Eva Lucien. So at the half the Rolling Pin-Ups, aka the “Homicidal Homemakers,” were leading 43-25.
In jam 11, the PUs Hannah Bull received a major penalty for drilling the Steamers jammer Pain Austen into the crowd. Shortly thereafter the PUs Candy Snatcher also belted Pain into the suicide seats and Candy went to join her teammate in the penalty box. Although the Pin-Ups were down a couple of blockers they had nullified any scoring potential by the Steamers jammer in that jam by putting her out of play. They obeyed the principal that it’s mighty hard for a jammer to score when she’s on the floor on her backside. When Hannah Bull came out of the penalty box in jam 12 she managed to get another major penalty and went right back to the box. In that jam 12 the pack got all spread out which made it easier for Eva to score her grand slam.
2nd Half
In their previous games in 2008, the Rolling Pin-Ups were usually in contention at halftime, sometimes even leading the score, only to suffer disastrous letdowns in the 2nd half and thus snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Several Pin-Ups and PU fans worried about that before the game began. Opening the 2nd half, the PUs sent out Eva Lucien against the Steamers Mata Hari in a rematch of the game’s opening jam. Mata was just about to net lead jammer when the PUs Candy Snatcher laid a hard shoulder into Mata. That allowed Eva to sneak through and grab lead jammer instead. Then Mata, in her haste to try to catch Eva, was whistled off to the penalty box for cutting the track.
That left Eva as an unopposed jammer and she made the most of the opportunity by racking up 3 grand slams en route to a huge 15-0 jam win that extended the Pin-Ups lead to 58-25. In that jam, the PUs Hannah Bull was trying to force an opening in the Steamers' leading blocking wall, then instead alertly switched strategy and slowed the rest of the pack to put the Steamers blockers too far in front to legally block and so Eva got an easy pass through them.
The PUs Punk’d Pixie got lead jammer in jam 2, although when Mata Hari came out of the penalty box for the Steamers Mata was the beneficiary of a huge knockdown block of Punk’d by XRAYTED and so Mata was able to win the jam 4-2 for the Steamers in spite of not having the lead. The Pin-Ups added another 10 points to their lead in jams 3 & 4 when Hannah Bull and Eva Lucien rang up back-to-back 5-0 grand slam jam wins. Hannah had to work hard in jam 3 as she was knocked down by Halochic before grabbing the lead, then Hannah later had to absorb a hard shoulder from Halochic. Then Steamers jammer Primp Daddy threw an elbow at Hannah which only effect was to land Primp in the penalty box.
Eva also had to work hard for her slam in jam 4. With the Steamers jammer Primp Daddy starting jam 4 in the penalty box, Eva Lucien got blasted into the infield on her initial pass although she was able to recover and get lead jammer when blocker Prof. Booty was more than 20 feet in front of the pack and so had to let Eva by. When Primp came out of the penalty box she was put on her derriere by the PU’s Vanity Scare, with Vanity being banished to the sin bin. It was announced before the game that Vanity was retiring from derby after this game, and it was nice to see she was skating hard throughout the game. Perhaps she will reconsider her decision? It was then 70-29 for the Pin-Ups with about 12 minutes left to play in the game.
The Steamers decided to raise the pressure in their boilers and try to catch up rather then just sinking slowly into the sunset. Jam 5 saw the Steamers Pain Austen torpedo up the inside to lead jammer and win the jam 9-0 with a grand slam before she was sent to the penalty box which ended the jam because the PUs jammer was already in the box (and you can’t have a jammerless jam-- the rules say so).
In that jam, the PU’s Soul Eater basically tackled Pain, and the refs immediately ejected Soul -- who left the track, and the game, by skating through the crowd and disappearing behind the hockey-style boards that surrounded the rink. That brought the score back to 70-38, still a huge margin for the Pin-Ups. There was an officials’ time-out after that jam with 9:43 left on the clock as the penalty box situation, among other things, had to be sorted out.
The Steamers got another 4-0 jam win in jam 6 when Professor Booty bested Hannah Bull. Booty only had about a 1/3 lap lead over Hannah, but as soon as Booty scored her points she called off the jam. In jam 7, The PU’s Eva Lucien got another lead jammer, but before she could score she got sent to the penalty box. She was soon joined by teammate Dagney Taghurt who had knocked down the Steamers jammer Primp Daddy. Primp took advantage of the Pin-Ups skating short-handed by racking up a 5-0 grand slam jam win. That narrowed the score to 70-47, still a 23 point lead for the Pin-Ups with time running short. The Steamers could still pull it out if they could get a couple more big jams.
The Pin-Ups switched to a defensive mode in the last few jams of the game. Eva Lucien had come out of the penalty box at the end of jam 7, and she jammed again in jam 8, grabbing the lead. Rather than try to pull away from the Steamers jammer Mata Hari, the two jammers were dodging each other. Mata finally pulled away and started scoring, and Eva, instead of calling the jam, calmly threaded her way through the pack to also score before calling the jam off as a 4-4 tie.
In jam 9, it took 45 seconds of precious time for Punk’d Pixie to get lead for the Pin-Ups. Punk’d then spent most of her time trying to block the Steamers jammer Pain Austen. When the two jammers eventually came around to back of the pack, before either could score Punk’d called the jam. In jam 10, Eva Lucien got her 9th lead of her 10 times jamming, and she went on to an anti-climactic 4-2 jam win. The score was 78-53 for the Pin-Ups, and their fans were excited.
The final jam started with only 10 seconds on the game clock, with Punk’d Pixie going up against Primp Daddy. Burning River was not skating under WFTDA 3.1 rules, and so the game ended after the 10 seconds expired. The Rolling Pin-Ups had finally won a game in 2008! And while the Pin-Ups ended up with a 1-4 record as did the Steamers, the Pin-Ups are the 3rd place team due to winning this game.
Afterthoughts
The Rolling Pin-Ups were able to put two halves of good skating for the first time this season, and it showed on the scoreboard. They jumped out to an early lead, and they held it throughout the game. Eva Lucien was the star jammer of he game with 53 points, but the Pin-Ups relied on their defense. As noted above, the Pin-Ups had a 16-6 advantage in lead jammers which enabled the PU jammers to control the game. But it was the Pin-Ups blockers that enabled the PU jammers to get so many leads by containing the Steamers jammers in the pack long enough for the PU jammers to get the lead.
In their 16 jams with the lead, the Pin-Ups outscored the Steamers by 50 points. In the Steamers 6 lead jams, they outscored the Pin-Ups by 25 points. Right there was the 25 point margin of victory for the Pin-Ups, proving anew the importance of controlling the lead jammer battle.
Statistics
The Rolling Pin-Ups Eva Lucien led all scorers with 53 points (in a 40 minute game), jamming 10 times with a phenomenal 9 leads, also scoring 5 grand slams. other PU jammers: Punk’d Pixie (14 points, 7 jams, 4 leads, 1 slam); Hannah Bull (8 pts, 4 jams, 2 leads, 1 slam); Angel N. Shadows (3 pts, 2 jams, 1 lead); Soul Eater (0 pts, 1 jam).
The Cleveland Steamers were led by Pain Austen with 17 points while jamming 6 times with 3 leads and 1 grand slam. Other Steamers jammers: Mata Hari (14 points, 5 jams); Professor Booty (13 pts, 5 jams, 2 leads); Primp Daddy (9 pts, 8 jams, 1 lead, 1 slam).
Burning River does not record offensive or defensive stats, so we can’t tell positively who the top blockers were. I would put a vote in for Hannah Bull of the Pin-Ups and Professor Booty of the Steamers as the top blockers, just based on some of the bigger hits.
Future
Burning River next takes to the track with a travel team away game versus the Dairlyland Dolls in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, August 30.
The next Burning River home game has the travel team hosting the Fort Wayne Derby Girls on Saturday, September 13. This is, surprisingly, the first time the BRRG has had a home travel team game. The game is at their BRRG home rink in North Olmstead, Ohio.
Cleveland Steamers?
I may be mixing up my naughty slang, but that might be the funniest home team name evar. Wouldn't have been a bad travel team name either, as it's obscure enough to blow past the TV and newspaper censors*.

Poobah you got it right
Yes, you are thinking of something beyond naughty and beyond gross. It is smart, but does illustrate the problem with this wave getting mainstream acceptance. It will have its following but crossing over into a wider acceptance is tougher once you get into the names that border on the gross. Its a shame because Cleveland does have a strong industrial history with ties to Steam power, so the name does fit. I am sure there are people who attend the games and do so with their kids, but major advertisers will be tough to come by for some groups. By major of course, I refer to those big corporate sponsors that will be looked for as this grows.
I am still a huge fan of the BOSTON MASSACRE name. Must be my status as an honorary new Englander. The list of great names being used is actually quite large and something I like. No matter how many times I hear the names Bombers, Pioneers, Jolters, Chiefs and Thunderbirds I just can not see them as a continuation of the old derby as much as I see it as trying to exploit the old names. This new wave has a great variety of names that are marketable, distinctive and in so many cases witty.
Reservoir Dolls
I couldn't let this thread go on without mentioning Madison's Reservoir Dolls. If one thing is responsible for me becoming addicted to derby, it's this schtick. The Tarantino uniforms were, and still are, simply too culturally smart.
When I was in Austin last September, my ResDolls shirt was an instant ice-breaker. Hiding from the rain in Coyote Ugly (oh god!), one patron, a little lubed, looked at the shirt and laughed, "They're Reservoir Dogs, but they're Dolls." Yep. I knew it was a good thing.

city based team names
I'm a fan of city/area based travel team names. As the fan-base grows with the sport, it gives an identity to the team and fans can relate to it. Denver's got the Mile High Club, Madison the Dairyland Dolls, Gotham is Gotham--name says it all, and Philly's got the Liberty Belles. My favorite bout "theme/name" was when Philly played in Boston and they flyers read "slaughters of the revolution".
Baltimore
I always thought it would be hilarious if Charm City's travel team was the "Baltimore Heroines" (get it? get it?) but I think it was deemed a bit TOO flip.

Goetta Fabulous?
There's this stuff they eat in Cincinnati called goetta, (pron. "getta") and Suzi Shinspintski was telling me that one of their home teams was trying to use the name 'Goetta Fabulous', but I guess it got voted down for P.C. reasons.
Personally, I think the Farm Fatales from Bloomington, IN. have a great concept going. Check out their logo.
I also really liked it that Grand Raggedy was calling their B travel team the 'B-sides', but they changed it to the G-Rap attack (or something), right? Meh.
I loves me a good team name. Yeah, the 'Cleveland Steamers' is a great name!

Boston scores again
If you like the "B" in the b-team name, Boston's B team is the Boston B Party.
B-girls?
Haha. Yeah, I remember hearing that name; in addition to the historical reference, that is awesome!
If a team wanted to integrate some jam skating and a little hip-hop flava into their presence, I suppose they could call themselves the 'B-girls' -- but if there was a team of derby girls who was good enough to bust some freestyle moves on skates AND play derby, then they probably wouldn't be listed as a B-team.

I think playing on goetta might not be very useful as a tongue-in-cheek team name outside of Cincy.
I can think of a number of dreadful mispronunciations and confusion.
And the Farm Fatales logo is brilliantly done.

The way the thread is set up...
Professor Murder:
There's a few different ways to structure thread replies -- personally I prefer one with instert-quote buttons to quote whoever you are actually replying to into the body of your text, but with this (DNN) system, you have to use HTML to create quote brackets (I think).
It's kind of confusing when you have a lot of people talking within a single forum, no matter how you slice it.
I personally really like my league(CoMO)'s Proboards thread, and I actually despise using those Yahoo groups that so many derby folk insist on -- but the Yahoo groups seem to be the standard, so I have just learned to adapt. The DNN forum architecture is not bad, as far as I am concerned, but JUSTICE F.M., can we get some quotation quick-buttons set up, please?
(It also never hurts to type the name of the person you are replying to at the beginning of the text body, like I just did.)

I would love to see it. Everybody who logs on here has been really cool and open, by the way. Thank you! Say, in the name of keeping readership -> conversation going strong, is there any kind of DNN HTML banner available?? I would be happy to post it on my myspace homepage and include it at the feet of the many derby related bulletins I send out each week. This matter is probably a discussion for a different thread altogether, but feel free to get a hold of me at the contact below, if I can help. I really like the DNN layout and the sense of ambivalence I get from everyone on the threads. Thank you!

Ask and you shall recieve! I've added a quote option as well as code that creates thread-based subject lines automatically (you can still change the subject if you want).
My personal philosophy on the forum/comment issue is that the site IS the forum. Your comments on these articles are what make DNN such a thriving site. So each article is not just an informative, entertaining derby nugget, it's also the first post in the thread.

City-Based Team Names
Cincinnati had an intraleague team called "The Riots" during their first season.
I always had (have, really) a soft spot in my heart for the name "The Cincinnati Riots" as a travel team name.
That said, I recognize that great care was to emphasize "The Riots" and not including the city name in there. I didn't think, this being the case, that my favored name had a shot at being the WFTDA team name.
The problem is that the league would really shun a great deal of the fanbase and public support it has were it to adopt that name. It's too close of an issue for many residents, and too recent of an incident to play upon (as opposed to, say, The Boston Massacre).
So smarts won out over my penchant for crassness. That and, being a ref, I had no vote. ;)

Thanks!
Thanks for coming to the bout and writing these fantastic recaps! Getting bear hug tackled by Soul Eater is even more fun when I get to read about it later.
When we do stuff on family oriented TV or radio, we usually refer to the team as "The Steamers."
My aunt came to see this game and bought a shirt to support the team... However, as a school principal and Catholic nun, I doubt she'll wear the shirt outside of derby events : ).
topic shift?
A friend of mine came up with a good name for a somewhat remote city with their share of meth users; "Speed Freaks". I found the name to be quite funny and would love to see it rise somewhere. Meth sucks but I can get into the double entendre.
This brings me to the topic of public sensitivity and I’ve often wondered what you fine folks in the derby world think in regard to becoming more attractive to mainstream audiences and how various leagues have adjusted their policies when considering perhaps more conservative fans. When those rowdy ladies of Austin got the world’s attention by bringing roller derby back to life, they brought with them style and attitude that some (me) find refreshing while others sit back and scratch their heads with wonder. This recipe alone should be reason enough for derby to grow as it is and not bow down to conservative pressure should the sport catch on heavy with the mainstream population.
From what I’ve seen so far, leagues have adopted certain policies with regard to public perception based upon their respective league-wide principles, the city in which they call home and/or just doing what they can to survive while they grow and learn to function as a league. Sometimes while trying to secure a venue you have to tone things down whether it means not serving alcohol or abstaining from profane jeering to the fans/other skaters, etc.
I'd like to see derby continue to grow as it is, warts and all. Let the refinement be in the quality of play, the evolution of rules and not in making things cuddly for mainstream. There's enough of that crap anyway. I think it's just plain fantastic that a few leagues around the country are starting up junior programs, it goes a long way in keeping the sport strong into the future. Some leagues are big on getting entire families to come to bouts while other leagues are age 21 and older and let the public know that things can get rude, lewd and there will be beer! How do the two balance together when the two fictitious leagues known as the “Twat Boxers” of The Bronx visit “Team Tabernacle” of Provo UT? Assuming the ladies from the Bronx bring a little more flavor than the quaint residents of Provo is used to? Is something like this simply settled between leagues? “Hey could you not flip off the daycare section when you skate by? Thanks”. I’ve seen a name edit or two in my time with inter league play. No big deal.
Personally I think the fringe aspect to roller derby is one of its most endearing. I also think society in general is abnormally oversensitive with offending just about anyone. I’m all for letting parents decide what they want their kids exposed to. I mean seriously, if your kid has internet then derby ain’t nothin’ but a thang.
I’m curious to hear thoughts from others on whether or not anyone cares for derby to go mainstream?
Naptown (Indy) has a very
Naptown (Indy) has a very family friendly approach. They desire that everyone feel welcome regardless of age. "Naughty" names are discouraged and the uni's are conservative (and perhaps the most unique in Derby). This reflects the basic atittude of our City and its a good fit. It must be a good fit because Naptown regularly drew 4000 fans for home games last season! Ask any visiting team that played Naptown last year...they'll tell ya. Having said that-I personally have no problem at all w/the "racier" aspects of Roller Derby and get a kick out of some of the naughtier names, double entendres and risque uni's. Its cool by me because it simply reflects the punk rock/heavy metal attitude that spurred this new wave of Derby. It's all in fun anyway. In the end Derby will probably become a little less fringe but will also retain some of its edge because it is after all ROLLER DERBY!
Panty check
I experienced my first "panty check" in Naptown. I guess my shorts were on the short side, but they were definitely full coverage. The refs exchanged these looks like, "Can we let her skate like this?" In the end I got to skate, but I always bring an extra pair of shorts to away games now.
The Future 'genre' of derby
Rollerderby seems to be on the cusp of a new era and a whole new generation of skaters who didn't grow up hanging out at the local rink in the 80's. Who knows what the future 'genre' of this sport will be but its going to be interesting no matter what because the passion and unique-ness of the skaters (crazy women!) will always be there.
Personally I have mixed feelings about 'dirty derby' vs. 'nike derby' because I love aspects of both. As a Mom, I want my daughter growing up learning about my world with a healthy dose of free-spirited attitude, self expression, and open minded tolerance. But I also want her to have good base morals and respect for the sport as well as the fans. Skaters come from all walks of life and all professions so its a very cool mix of styles and attitude. While I sometimes like throwing on a pair of ripped fishnets - I often do so paired with a Nike skort!
I think the point I'm trying to make is that there's room for conservative focused athleticism mixed with the saucy suggestive entertainment derby is notorious for. Balancing the skaters -and- the fans preference is the key!
~Envie~
'Burning River' is a great league name!
I just want to say that "Burning River" is a great name for a derby league that hails from the Cuyahoga River region and its (past?) penchant for catching fire! I also love their "Hazard" logo. I'll bet the city government types aren't too keen on the name, though.
I also love the "Bleeding Heartland" league name.
I tried to get my hometown Detroit Derby Girls to call their travel team the "Motor City Kitties" but they didn't like the name, so they're just the DDG All-Stars. DDG does have a "B-team" named the Motor City Disassembly Line so at least there's some tie to the auto industry which is what made Detroit famous. (Reminds one of the Brewcity Bruisers from Milwaukee, as everyone knows that beer made Milwaukee famous!) And when skaters from Detroit and Grand Raggidy (and probably Killamazoo in the future) get together to skate at places like ECE they call themselves the Mitten Kittens (since Michigan's lower peninsula is shaped like a mitten [for those who don't know geography]).

We are "family friendly" and the refs even give minors for swearing (although I have yet to see them do it at a bout). We don't serve alcohol at our bouts either.
However, we are the derby DEMONS and one of our teams are the BITCH doctors.
Conflicted image much? We don't seem to have much problems with sponsors but we have trouble flyering certain areas, Squirrel Hill a predominantly orthodox jewish neighborhood and some businesses won't hang out flyers.
I wonder how many people are turned off from either side. The I have a family but you are bitches and demons so I won't be coming vs the I'm over 21 and wanna drink and have a good time w/o any 3 yr olds running around.
Any other leagues experiencing this?
I had a nightmare
last night and my favorite team, the Boston Massacre, had a new lineup of jammers. Sarah Doom had earned her Doctorate, Jack Kevorkian had a sex change operation and tried out for the Massacre as a jammer and Bloodbath Bettie changed her name to just Bloodbath. The skated a 3 jammer rotation of Bloodbath, Dr. Doom and Dr. Death but no one would schedule them because they were afraid. ESPN which was owned by Rudolph Murdoch, refused to televise any bouts with skaters with
such violent anti-American names. The debate began about changing the names and then I woke up.
Conservitive Town
ICT (Wichita, KS) is very Christian Conservative. Our entire state (usually) votes Red except for one college town. Our rink will not allow us to serve alcohol (after nuuuummmmerrrous attepts) and one former skater had to Change her name from "Full Metal Jackoff" to "Moose Knuckle". We can't wear anything that has cusswords on it to practice and parents have complained to the owner that some of our skirts are "WAY to short and show WAY too much". We have to take into consideration the family friendly aspects at our bouts, which includes half time shows/ crowd envolvement, music we play, names of the bouts, etc... I would like a little more raunch, but I like to flaunt my great derby butt! I know that some think to be a serious sport you have to look "professional" but think about all the crazy tennis shoes basketball players hustle and the touchdown celebrations in football, a little spice adds interest.

Sept 13th Bout will be different
I'll be up to call the "Jam the Vote" bout at the Cotillion. Full Bar will be interesting!
Watch the TV commercial here:
Jam the Vote
Gee? who's doin' the V/O?
Someone Needs to Buy a New Dirty Dictionary
Full Metal Jackoff = Bad?
Moose Knuckle = Good?
Yowza.
I've always been of the opinion that names should try to ride the line of "family friendly" without stomping it dead. I have friends in derby, and other I simply respect as participants in this great sport, who have names that give me the chills.
Let me simply say that something like "Moose Knuckle" is one of those.
It's not my place to say what is or is not appropriate, but if "derby names" are here to stay instead of using legal names, there should be some degree of tact in selecting them.
Again, only my opinion.
Biker Dave, isn't there a Naptown skater whose vanity number is "f%&k you"?
Actually yes...that would be
Actually yes...that would be one Touretta Lynn. We love her! But that is her "number". Somehow she wriggled free of the "family friendly" constraints. Personally I think her "number" is hilarious.
The ironic thing is, most of
The ironic thing is, most of those "concerned parents" have no problem with swimsuits, gymnastics leotards, and figure skating dresses, all of which are skin-tight, and most of which which show more skin than even the most revealing derby uniforms. It's not the clothes in themselves that so offend these people. Most of their beef is with the attitude or perception thereof. No matter what you do, people are going to get offended. Play rock music at bouts, and they get offended. Have piercings, tattoos, or whatever, and they get offended. Have an alternative lifestyle or accept that others do, and they get offended. Work outside the house and wear pants, and they get offended. My opinion of that falls somewhere within the realm of "tough s**t."
Re: The ironic thing is, most of
Amen Sister!! I personally would hate to see too much of the "edge" sanded off of the great sport of Roller Derby. And in the immortal words of Lemmy from Motorhead, "Who are you not to be offended??". Heehee!
Hey Moose!
Moose, we're super excited that you are going to be there!
On the subject of names, the reason "Moose Knuckle" was more acceptable is because most people have to think about it before they realize what it means. "Jackoff" is just out there. Granted that skater is no longer with our league so it's not much of an issue now. It was only an example of what our "family friendly" rink made us do.
I agree that everyone has their "comfort" zone as far as what will or will not offend them. I'm one to hold a personal belief that it doesn't matter what people think, but to increase revenue for our league, we have to think about these things when planning, advertising and producing a bout. It sucks sometimes, but we want as many people to be exposed to derby not just our open minded bros and sis. It takes all kinds, and that's what we want to promote. Just one view.

come on...look at the beach volleyball "uniforms" and you know they had to pick a wedgie after every point.

This is an excellent point. All these folks getting 'offended' by short shorts in derby should have watched some of the beach volleyball at the Olympics! Photographers love to snap shots of those super secret hand signals they use behind their backs, but methinks its more about the butt behind the signals! ;)
Case in point: Beach Volleyball Ass-entials

hand signals
That whole hand signals thing cracked me up during the olympics. Every media outlet (including CNN) ran a "story" just like that, about the "secrets of the hand signals". Except neither the copy nor the photo captions ever said anything about what the hand signals meant. It was just an ass-fest.

New Strategerie?
Maybe we can say our outfits are "secret signals" to team members. Like if I wear a certain color or shortness of pantie to a bout it means I am going to play a certain postition (even though we like to be well rounded players)? Or we could just give the nay-sayers razzes and tell them POO ON YOU (no-offence Grand Poobah)!
Don't we all love double standards! And what was with that shoulder strap thing?
