CICERO, IL -- On Saturday night, the number eighteen-ranked Minnesota Roller girls visited Chicago for a friendly evening of the old skate-and-bump, but the proceedings quickly devolved to rout, with the WCR running away with the match and the MRG with an acute case of scoreboard fatigue.
In the first twenty minutes, Minnesota's offense completely failed to materalize, allowing for Chicago to build a nearly unprecedented 85-0 lead. Presumably, the Minnesota bench was already adding up the dismal minutes until they could limp back up the Northwest Toll way, but it was at this point that the MRG secured their first opportunity at lead jam. To the appreciation of all assembled, Harmony Killerbruise saved Minnesota face and scored a grand slam (with two of her blockers in the penalty box, no less). Hanna Belle Lector scored a few more before half-time, but Windy City had put three digits between the teams by the intermission at 112-7.
The second half opened with a series of scoreless jams, with Minnesota blockers double- and triple-teaming Megan Formor and opposing jammers battling down the stretch; however, Shocka Conduit then broke through for a monster 15-pointer and the rout was back on.
Minnesota jammers saw less daylight than vampires, with Megan and Malice w/ Chains consistently stranding them in the pack. On the occasions when they penetrated that gauntlet, Hoosier Mama, Blossom Bruiso and company buffeted them unmercifully, scattering them like skittles. With the bleachers filled with fans eager for their money’s worth of action, there was no stopping the game until it lurched toward its ordained conclusion.
Minnesota’s star player and 2008 MVP, Jawbreaker, showed why she's on the unofficially national all-star team, Team Awesome -- she earned a ton of cred with the Windy City fans from her monster blocks, stellar jamming and gutsy play. Team captain Suzie Smashbox also distinguished herself in picking up some late-game points while imitating a human Weeble; successive poundings from Megan, Malice and Ying spun and wobbled her but failed to bring her down.
While it is customary to dwell on Chicago’s dominance on defense, on this occasion Windy City also won hands down on speed. Varla Vendetta, Eva Dead, Shocka Conduit, Yvette Yourmaker and Ying O’Fire all fattened their stats with double-digit jams. Varla led the way with three 15-pointers. The “Varla Effect,” where the opposing blockers look back over their shoulders for her just as she blasts past them, was in full effect. Also, Eva Dead put on an exceptional show, ducking, weaving, jumping and even cracking her stoic visage with a spontaneous smile.
The biggest ovation came the second time the WCR turned the scoreboard over, an unprecedented event. For those wondering, the numerals went from 199 to 000, giving Minnesota a chance to sneak ahead on points. However, the scorekeepers proved too alert to allow such a subterfuge. Final score: Windy City Rollers 206 – Minnesota Roller Girls 18.
On September 6, Windy City leaves the friendly confines of Cicero for the high altitudes of Denver as they take on #12 Rocky Mountain. Oddly enough, Minnesota is in the same city against the other WFTDA league the very next weekend, battling #25 Denver on September 12.

I am so eager...
I am so eager to see how KCRW's world class jamming to squares up against WCR's monster defense on Sept. 20th. Unfortunately, I'll be in Fort Wayne checking out the annual Fall Brawl (which is still awesome).
In spite of the rankings, I think that going up against WCR at Cicero is going to be KCRW's toughest challenge yet, tougher than TXRG (where KC slid by only one single point last month), in my estimation.
I am not trying to steer the conversation away from this Minnesota bout (well, I am), but what more is there to discuss? They (MN) got smeared. I am looking at this behemoth of a Chicago All-Star Team that has swelled up since last season, and wondering when they will start slowing down!
So who thinks it will be Gotham or Windy City for the Eastern Division queens? Those seem to be the top two bids I am getting from most of the skaters I've talked to the last couple of months.
I wonder...

Heya Batwing- I too will be
Heya Batwing- I too will be at the Fall Brawl so I'll look for ya. I will definately be at the Naptown, Brew City and Hammer City bouts. And hopefully be able to catch Dixie.
As far as the East Division Queens will be...well, uhhhh some of those Queens may reside in Queens and the other Boroughs for that matter. I really really like those Windy City Girls but...ummmm...no. I think that this is the Year of the Goth. Those NYC Rollergirls are gonna prove that they are the class of the East.
East Domination??
So no one has mentioned CRG to be in the running for Queens of the East, only WCR and Gotham. What is the thought there?
You mean Cincy or Carolina?
You mean Cincinnati or Carolina by CRG?
(Confusing, I know.)

I was at the Cincy VS. Carolina bout
I was at the Cincy VS. Carolina bout on July 19th (we did us a little man-on-man scrimmage during half-time), and I honestly don't know if either of those teams are playing quite at the level, defensively, that Gotham or WCR are this season. Of course, Carolina did beat Champion KCRW (by only one point) in the off-season, and Cincinnati beat Carolina by only five points at this bout last July -- though apparently Carolina had to leave two of their ace jammers at home, which probably explains the defeat.
Hey, Cincy is probably my favorite league in WFTDA right now; I just love them as people, and love watching them skate. I think Sadistic Sadie is one of the best jammers in the country, but that can only go so far against this monster defense that has been causing these upset victories against the high-ranking teams of yesteryear (perfect example: WCR VS. Minnesota).
Just my two cents.

Ha ha
I'd highly recommend you go to a game sometime with one of these top teams when it matters. Watch them on neutral ground at ECE or a tournament. Some good derby there ...
Remember all home/away games have flux - that's the nature of the beast. Windy City / Carolina at ECE was one of the better games I've seen in a while.
(although I hear there was a absolute back and forth nail biter on rink 2 while Gotham was playing Texas)
Right on,
Yeah, home-court advantage definitely does carry some weight. I am reading over the scores from the ECE article back in June.

I saw the Windy City vs
I saw the Windy City vs Carolina bout at ECE this year and without a doubt, that was some great derby. I swear the pack was skating at jammer speed. And you could really see lots of teamwork. That's what I got out of going and watching at ECE this year. A big part of the difference between great teams like Carolina and the newcommers like the Dutchland Derby Rollers was teamwork.
East Domination??
I meant Carolina. Anyone else have an opinion? Does anyone else think Carolina is a contender for East Dominiation? They are ranked 4th in the nation and haven't actually played Gotham. They beat Windy and Philly very recently. I'm not sure what to think. Who out there really tracks the details and strategies of this stuff? Whatcha think? Or is Carolina not worth thinking about anymore?
They're in the hunt
Carolina has a shot at it....
I think the East goes pretty deep. The top eight are all pretty good. No one could have picked last year's eastern final four. Upsets are probably going to happen again.
correction
Actually Carolina did play (and did decisively beat) Gotham in March of 2007, at ECE.
Both squads came in with big handicaps - Carolina arrived exhausted due to the horrible drive from hell in the snow, and was short a handful of players due to the infamous van accident the night before. Gotham, in turn, arrived fresh off a nowhere-to-skate no-skating off-season with only a couple of on-skate practices under its belt since November 2006.
A Gotham/Carolina re-match would be a long-anticipated don't-you-dare-miss-it bout.
No mention of penalties, so
No mention of penalties, so I'm assuming it was a clean game for both parties. WCR continues to amaze me. While I previously thought GGRD had it in the bag for Eastern Champs, I definitely think WCR will pose quite a challenge.

The East
It is not a stretch to say Gotham is probably the best team in the country not just the East. However, as derby goes—you never know... we plan to give ‘em a run for their money. They are an inspiration. :)
By the way, the chicks from Minnesota.... awesome!
Windy City Rollers: MeganFormor
Megan - you're way too kind.
Megan - you're way too kind. Obviously we plan to bring our best but as last year showed, all kinds of crazy and unexpected stuff can happen... we look forward to seeing/playing youse guys!

Heavy emphasis on *may*!
Trust me, Windy City is not taking any of our potential opponents at Eastern Regionals lightly!
The whole pool in the Eastern Region is so ridiculously deep-- any team is capable of a shattering upset at any point in the tournament-- and our All-Stars are training for this! I hope to see them take it all the way!
xo,

Try and make it ... will be exciting
Remember the way rankings, placement, standings and seeding work when you look at that schedule. Heck, when you look at ANY game after ECE this year.
There are some VERY interesting stories bubbling around that.
Exciting yes; Surprises no
I think Easterns will go down pretty much the way the rankings have it laid out. Detroit will get a shot at Philly, but basically the top four are going to nationals, in what order who's to say. I think there's probably been more inter-league games played to date than were played all of last year. There are no real surprises coming, everybody's seen everybody else play.
