WFTDA Bout Preview: #17 Madison Hosts #13 Charm City

MADISON, WI -- Two rising teams with their eyes on solidifying their reputations will clash in Madison on Saturday night, as the resurgent, #17th-ranked Mad Rollin' Dolls of Madison host the red-hot, #13th-ranked Charm City Roller Girls of Baltimore. It is the first meeting between the two teams.

DNN's Gnosis will be boutcasting the action as it happens on the Leadjammer liveblog, Saturday night at 8pm EDT / 7PM CDT / 6PM MDT / 5PM PDT.

Charm City hasn't dropped a bout since they were defeated 126-37 by #11 Rose City in November 2007, and their 6-0 record since December ties them with #8 Detroit and #5 Gotham for the longest active winning streak in ranked WFTDA play. The Baltimore girls had serious trouble against #12 Minnesota in December but managed a nailbiting 73-69 victory, and also played a back-and-forth classic against #14 Rocky Mountain in March, taking control very late in the bout to come out on top 115-97.

The other four bouts of the run were somewhat more lopsided, as they won a tough but decisive victory over #21 Dallas in January (117-89), controlled #28 Ohio in February (132-64), and walloped their opponents on both days of June's East Coast Extravaganza event (214-62 over #24 Houston and 131-62 over #15 Providence) in two performances that ably demonstrated their increasingly effective defense.

While the Providence and Houston bouts were on neutral ground, Charm City hasn't played on an opponent's home turf since the Minnesota bout in December.

The more established Madison team was once considered the best in the East, sitting as high as #4 in the national ranks and entering the 2007 Eastern Regionals as the top seed, but a winless 2007 dropped them from their lofty perch -- they lost big at home to #6 Tucson (120-64), got bumped off in the first round of Regionals by #7 Windy City (94-63), and then got surprised again at home by #14 Rocky Mountain (131-98).

In the last couple of months, though, Madison has had some shining performances that would seem to suggest they're on their way back up. While they did lose a June rematch to Windy City 132-74, they also got a sizable May victory over #25 Denver, 159-74. It was their performance at the East Coast Extravaganza that really served notice that they were back, though -- they smashed #31 Fort Wayne in the biggest rout of the weekend, 250 to 38, and then came awfully close to delivering an upset to host #9 Philly before succumbing 106-93.

Both teams will be suiting up rosters fairly similar to the ECE crews, though Madison is without two steady jammers in Back Doris and Carrie A. HackSAW. Charm City comes with 13, missing a rough-and-tumble blocker in the fiery Coach Ballbricker, but retaining the savvy pack play of the lanky Reckless Ndangerment, who returned to the active all-star roster at ECE after being absent for the Ohio and Rocky Mountain contests.

With both teams all but certain to make an appearance at this year's Eastern Regionals in October -- which will also be hosted by Madison -- this one could very well end up being a preview of a first-round match.

roster

Reckless N'Dangerment is on the regular TT roster, she played in both games at ECDX. She was not on the roster for Rocky Mountain or Ohio due to work conflicts with TT tryouts.

The only thing that will not

The only thing that will not be GREAT about this bout is that they charge $3.50 for a can of Rolling Rock at the Madison venue. Which, of course, seems like a wondrous bargain when compared to the five bucks one pays for a cup of Budweiser at a Windy City Rollers bout. GIVE ME TWO DOLLAR CANS OF PABST OR GIVE ME DEATH!!!

True. But RR is a sponsor,

True. But RR is a sponsor, so you'll drink it and you'll like it! Hey...maybe you can get some product placement in the game...Nintendo would have love that.

Another fantastic bout for

Another fantastic bout for this weekend features 2 very likeable teams. Those lovely skaters of the Mad Rollin Dolls vs the equally lovely Rollergirls of Chaaaaarm City. Charm City have been charming me with their heart and determination recently and I would SO love to pick them in this bout. My heart is lovingly trying to convince me that indeed the Charm City Girls will emerge victorious. However...my brain is screaming at me. And my brain is saying, "Biker Dave. Hello-this is yer brain! Mad Rollin has the experience and tuffness you FOOL. Listen to me... I am, after all, yer BRAIN". So, after much debate between my heart and my brain I have to go with the cerebellum and pick those crazy Mad Rollin Dolls to win this bout. My heart still loves Charm City tho. How could it not?? I have this infatuation with Chaaaaarm City that cant quite be explained. Its not yet to the level of my fascination with Providence but still...

FRICKING AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

FRICKING AMAZING!!!!!!!!! Bodies were flying everywhere, the skaters were traveling at warp speed, it was nuts!!! As predicted, the only thing NOT great about this bout was that i had to drink Rolling Rock! My grand poobah hat is off to both the Dolls and Charm City, that was pretty much the best bout i've ever seen in person.

Does anyone know why Flo Shizzle got sent off in the final jam? That was like the game right there and i can't understand a word Bob and Baam say at that place...

No one seems to know

No one seems to know. JFM, who was reffing Mouse at the time, asked me after the bout. I asked several people at the after-party too. Rev Riot or Shamrock reading this? I think Shamrock made the call.

I believe it was a cutting track major, the 3.0 version

ya know, the kind where she takes a block that sends her out of bounds to the inside and does everything she can to not skate back in bounds (including hitting the deck hard) but the rules say if any part of her crosses back in, it's a no-discretion-gotta-call-it penalty. and, sadly for us, a wayward limb/skate fell in bounds ahead of 2 skaters. bam. major. same thing happened two jams in a row to a skater from another team at ECDX. and with back-to-back trips to the box a tied bout became a convincing lead for her opponents. beware.

not a ref, but it happened 2 ft. from me in turns 3-4.

great bout

hats off to both teams skatin hard and making adjustments to the other teams' strategies. how many lead changes were there?
don't know why flo got sent off (4 minors? cutting?) as it happened on the opposite turn from where i was sitting. what i do know about that last jam is that the DD blockers really stepped it up and did whatever they could to make sure (mighty) mouse could fly around as many times as possible - and she didn't disappoint!
great match-up with these two physical and thletic teams...just a preview of what we'll see this October in Madison
