BOSTON, MA -- The Ohio Roller Girls will travel to Boston this Saturday looking for their second win of the season as the home team seeks to regain their winning streak. Both teams went 1-1 at the East Coast Extravaganza in June. Ohio, playing both of their games on Sunday, ended up on the winning end of a 86-85 nail-biter with Cleveland's unranked Burning River, but later took a scathing loss to Grand Raggidy, 115-39.
Conversely, the Boston Massacre, in a Saturday game that was deadlocked at the half, succumbed to the 14th-ranked Rocky Mountain Rollergirls (111-93) in their first loss this season. Loss doesn’t sit well with the Boston ladies, who came back with a fury the next day to shut down #24 Houston (114-38). With both teams hungry for a win, the stage has been set for Saturday’s bout, which will likely be a fight to the bitter end.
The 28th-ranked Ohio Roller Girls have had a tough 2007-2008 season, with a record of just 1-6. But they’ve set their sights high, and some of those losses were against top WFTDA teams, including 8th-ranked Detroit (to whom the Massacre lost in overtime at the 2007 Eastern Regionals) and 13th-ranked Charm City (whom the Massacre narrowly beat 112-110 in May 2007).
This will be the Boston Massacre’s sixth all-star game of the season. Aside from their day-one loss at ECE, the Massacre has prevailed with recent wins over 20th-ranked Dominion (119-69), the Bronx Gridlock (116-49)—in an exhibition both against Gotham Girls’ reigning local champions, and 26th-ranked Cincinnati (85-44). With several pack weapons, the Boston Massacre is firing in good rhythm and their blocking teamwork and pack communication are on par to make this a strong match up.
Ohio will be skating with a full 14-player roster while the Boston Massacre will be missing steadfast jammer Sarah Doom. However, with explosive jammers such as co-captain Claire D. Way, Maura Buse, and the high-scoring rookie and new team co-captain Krush Puppy, Ohio is going to have to work really hard to contain the Massacre’s offense. Equally daunting, Massacre will need to maintain strong teamwork and a tough defense to fend off Ohio’s Barracuda, Foxy Force, and HellionBOI who have proven to be major threats at the jammer line.
