Hambone from Gotham Girls draws our attention to a blog I'd never heard of before called Uniwatch -- which is a sports blog specifically about sports attire (sample post opening line: "Florida State was eliminated from the College World Series on Monday night, robbing a national television audience of the chance to see an all-yellow uniform.") It's funny and well-written stuff, but honestly, I didn't know blogs *got* that nichey.
Anyway, though, it looks like a writer over there has an interest in classic roller derby, and has an interesting little overview of the evolution of the derby uniform over the years, but the new wave gets sadly short shrift. Why not go over to Uniwatch's comments and leave a link to pictures of your league's most totally awesome uniform? Educate the unwashed masses!
Yikes.
A blog devoted solely to sports uniforms? That might possibly outgeek this site.
Actually, that particular
Actually, that particular column was written by a guest columnist. The blog's regular writer, Paul Lukas, is a friend of mine, with two significant character flaws: 1) He hates purple, my favorite color; 2) He doesn't like derby! I told him quite a while ago that he needed to start covering derby unis ((i mean, who else would have been qualified to give us in-depth analysis of the deep sigificance of the Dairyland Dolls' switch from the blue-stripe dresses to the light-blue trim type dresses?)), and he retorted by saying that derby uniforms were COSTUMES, not uniforms, thus unworthy of his attention. I highly disagree with that, i think the highly customizable derby unis are rendering 20th century sports uniforms aesthetically inert, but, then again, i'm kind of weird, so whatever.
uniform? costume?
The Atlanta Rollergirls introduced me to the term "boutfit," which has a certain charm and descriptiveness to it.
