East Coast Extravaganza Preview: Saturday

(u) Burning River v. (u) Connecticut (10:30am)

In a battle of two newer, Division III teams, Cleveland's Burning River will be looking for their first WFTDA win (they went down to unranked Naptown in February and lost by 100 points to #8 Detroit in March.) Connecticut has a 1-2 WFTDA record, having defeated unranked Long Island 106-61 in October but solidly lost their last two games to #15 Providence and unranked Maine -- although they did notch a non-sanctioned win over Boston's B team on May 15th, 85-44.

Skaters to watch: Connecticut brings a particularly dangerous pair of agile jammers in Black Cherry and captain Pearl Jammer; Burning River's highest scoring jammer against the tough Detroit defense was Eva Lucien.

(23) Grand Raggidy v. (26) Cincinnati (11:00am)

The outcome of this one is huge to both team's hopes for an invite to October's Eastern Regionals -- only the top 12 teams from the East get to go, and currently Grand Raggidy hovers at #13 in the East while Cincinnati holds #14. Grand Raggidy looks to be fairly strong right now -- they had a respectable 87-44 loss to #7 Windy City in April and then really turned some heads by falling just 12 points shy of shocking #8 Detroit on May 31. Cincinnati's been very busy thus far in 2008, with wins over unranked Naptown, #31 Fort Wayne and #35 Steel City, but they haven't had much luck against higher-ranked teams, losing solidly to #16 Boston (87-42 in May) and #9 Philly (102-32 just one week later.)

Cincinnati's Sadistic Sadie has quickly made a national reputation for herself as one of the game's speediest jammers, while Jackie Daniels and Dot Matrix of Grand Raggidy key a team increasingly known for an effective team defense.

(13) Charm City vs. (24) Houston (12:30pm)

Baltimore's Charm City rolls into this matchup enjoying a four-game win streak that has seen them rise from #22 to #13, but Houston recently gained loads of experience in California at May's Roll for the Cure tourney, where they lost three of four bouts but faced off against heavyweights #10 Bay Area, #11 Rose City and #12 Minnesota – giving the Minnesota girls a scare at 97-83. (Houston's one win in Cali was a 97-75 win over unranked OC.)

CCRG brings crowd-pleasing duo Joy Collision and Dolly Rocket to the party, but a question for Charm City will be whether oft-injured but very effective blocker Holly Go Hardly will be at 100 percent after sitting out Charm City's last home bout. For Houston, the agile Death By Chocolate and speedy The Prosecutor will be trying to lead the Texans to an upset win.

(17) Madison vs. (31) Fort Wayne (1:00pm)

Formerly dominant in the Eastern region, Madison has been trying to get back on track for the last twelve months, with only 1 WFTDA win in the past year (over #25 Denver on May 31.) Last week they went down to a tough 132-74 loss to #7 Windy City. Fort Wayne caused a stir last June when they came within 2 points of surprising Grand Raggidy, 84-82, but they haven't had a lot of success this year, getting a 100-35 schooling from Cincinnati and losing a close one to #36 Brew City (63-55) before finally getting their first WFTDA win with a 72-70 squeaker over St. Louis' Arch Rival Roller Girls.

Madison's crew is somewhat changed since last year, but still brings vets Darling Nikki, Jenny Knoxville and Back Doris to scenic Feasterville. The ladies of Fort Wayne haven't played too many bouts outside of the Midwest, so this stands as an excellent chance for East Coast derby fans to get to see what they can do.

(16) Boston vs. (14) Rocky Mountain (2:30pm)

Many scouting eyes will be on this clash between two tough mid-level teams, as both teams seem certain to be dangerous in their respective regional tournaments. After an extremely hard-fought 115-97 loss to #13 Charm City in March, Denver's Rocky Mountain is on a three-game winning streak, squashing #15 Providence at home by 128 points in May and then beating #19 Arizona and #27 Pikes Peak in away games by solid but not overwhelming margins (76-53 over AZRD, and 111-80 over PPDD.)

Meanwhile, Boston hasn't been quite as active in 2008, with their only ranked bout being a 87-42 victory over #26 Cincinnati on May 10 -- but they did get a win to be proud of when they thumped the Bronx Gridlock, Gotham's championship home team, by a final of 116-49 in March.

The balanced Boston squad brings both intimidating speed (jammers Sarah Doom, Claire D. Way) and intimidating strength (Shelby Shattered, Triple Deck-Her) to the track. They've also been buttressed by three skilled transfers since last season -- Harley Quinn (formerly of DC) and Anna Wrecks'Ya and Baby Fighterfly from Providence. Most of Rocky Mountain's offense comes from jammer duo Frida Beater and She Who Cannot Be Named, but they play a very effective defensive game, as Providence found out the hard way. Also notably, RMRG is bench-coached on this excursion by derby masterminds Trish the Dish and Ivanna S. Pankin.

(3) Carolina vs. (25) Denver (3:00pm)

Denver continues to show no fear of the best derby has to offer -- they've already played #1 Kansas City and the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers home team from #4 Texas this year. They test themselves again in this matchup with the East's #1 team before getting it on with the East's #2 team, Gotham, on Sunday.

This bout features multiple notable changes to the Carolina roster -- Denise Lightning, who came to Carolina from Arizona and was a big part of Carolina's 2007-ending upset of #1 Kansas City, has gone back to Phoenix, but original Carolina phenom Roxy Rockett, who left early in 2007 to join Philly, has returned to Raleigh. This is also Penelope Bruz's first bout back on the all-star team after a lengthy absence for injury. For Denver, spectators will want to keep an eye on Angela Death and Sheila Tack, both exciting and resilient jammers -- but they'll need all their skills and a lot of blocking help from Boo Boo Radley, Disco-A-Go-Go, Fiona Grapple and others to navigate the notoriously effective Carolina defense.

(15) Providence vs. (22) Atlanta (4:30pm)

Providence is one of the oldest leagues in this relatively new sport, so it was particularly surprising when they suffered a 75-64 April loss to unranked Maine in Maine's very first WFTDA-ranked bout. Just one month later, they traveled to #14 Rocky Mountain, where they were presented with an even more surprising pasting, held to single digits by the home team in a 137-9 loss.

Providence would surely like nothing more than to erase the memory of those losses with a win over Atlanta -- but Atlanta's got plenty of incentive of their own to win, as ATL currently holds the crucial #12 seed in the Eastern Region and could potentially fall out of tournament contention with a loss. However, they've only got one all-star bout under their belts in the last 10 months -- a 91-58 victory over unranked Tampa Bay.

Providence has a solid group of jammers in Hysterica, Jailbird Jenny, DaSilva Bullet and Craisy Dukes, while Burnin' Helen, Shelby Bruisin' and Sass E. McNasty will be crucial elements of the Providence pack. Atlanta veterans Demi Gore, Wheelin' Jennings and captain Queen Loseyateefa will be helping their team rep for the Dirty South.

(4) Texas vs. (5) Gotham (5:00pm)

See feature preview here.

(8) Detroit vs. (20) Dominion (6:30pm)

Dominion has been making a lot of noise in the past half-year. They've got four straight WFTDA wins, with the last three being big blowouts -- a 169-44 rout of #29 Sin City, a 150-80 rout of #35 Steel City, and the capper -- the biggest blowout in WFTDA history, a 307-6 dismantling of Long Island. However, all of those wins have been against fairly lowly-ranked teams, and this bout will go a long way towards showing if they're ready to compete at the tournament level. Detroit, while also on a four-game win streak, had a tough time putting away #23 Grand Raggidy on May 31, hanging on for a 94-82 victory. As the #4th ranked team in the East region, Detroit currently holds a crucial first-round bye for the regional tourney -- an upset win for Dominion here would really scramble the tournament picture in the East.

Detroit's tireless workhorse Racer McChaser, the MVP of 2007's Eastern Regionals, gets a lot of deserved credit for Detroit's strength, but they've got a deep cast that includes two more excellent jammers in Honey Suckit and recent all-star addition Effin' Money, along with the nationally renowned bone-crunching blocking of Killbox -- who's known to don the star herself every now and again. Dominion comes into the bout with a reputation for standout speed, especially from Tsunami Tsue and Sweet N. Lowdown.

(9) Philly vs. (7) Windy City (7:00pm)

The day's action comes to a close with event hosts Philly grappling for the first time with Chicago's Windy City. Going into last year's Eastern Regionals, many expected Philly to have a much better shot at getting into the final four and qualifying for Nationals -- but Philly's first-round bye wasn't enough to get them past eventual tourney champs Gotham, and Windy City's epic upset of Madison gave Windy the Nationals berth.

Philly's been up and down since Regionals, winning a squeaker over the tough Bay Area in November, 62-56, but losing badly in an April rematch with Gotham, 145-47. They did get back on track on May 18th, shutting down Cincinnati 102-35 in an away game. Windy City has won all three of their 2008 events over unranked Arch Rival, #23 Grand Raggidy, and #17 Madison by over 40 points each.

Both all-star teams are comprised of longtime veterans who have a lot of experience playing with each other, so expect particular effective teamwork on both sides. Philly captain Teflon Donna is effective in almost all positions, but is nursing some nagging injuries that may affect her play. Windy City, on the other hand, is without imposing blocker Megan Formor.

My ECE Picks...I Could Get Burned

The glorious East Coast Exravaganza will be going on in Philly and I figured that I would make my picks for those of you who have Derby Bookies and need to really know who to bet yer house on. For entertainment purposes only yaddayadda. This is WFTDA heaven what with 21 East Coast ranked teams participating. This tournament is SURE to shake up the rankings and I cant wait to see what happens.

Day 1-Rink #2
* Connecticut wins over Burning River in a close bout. MILFinator is offered a deal w/Maxim. Sadly, she nails the guy from Maxim making the offer right in the eye. Well...she IS a Rollergirl.

* Charm City wins convincingly over Houston who have been really faltering lately. I like Charm City. Thats a real nice name...Charm City.

* Rocky Mountain continues to take out their anger on the opposition and beat Boston in a very physical game. Did I say that Rocky Mtn kix ass?? No?? Well they do. Bostons gonna see.

* My 'lil team that could is Providence, a team that I have a real soft spot for. I realy like Prov, and theyre gonna sneak up and pull this game out of their hat against a talented Atlanta team. Rumor has it that if Prov does win this game Dixie is gonna make the drive all they way out to Philly to buy Prov a keg of beer and give them all a big kiss on the cheek. Hey maybe its a groundless rumor okay?? I cant be held responsible for every random thought that pops in my mind right??

* Those Bad Girls from the Bad City, known as Deeeetroit to the rest of ya, are gonna dominate Dominion. I'm sorry Dom, they just ARE. I honestly cant even give ya a realistic chance at all in this bout Dom. Now THERE! Ya got some "bulletin board" material-now RUN with it Dom. Wont do any good. Detroit is just too damn mean for the Dom skaters.

-Day 1-Rink 3
* Grand Raggidy pulls out a VERY close bout against Cincy. Grand Raggidy are really getting strong and even in their losses theyve grown. I like 'em. Sadistic Sadie doesnt like 'em so much. She'll like 'em even less when they go down to GRRG by a point or 2.

* Mad Rollin Dolls take down Ft Wayne in a rspectable showing for FW. Mad Rollin is probably just too much for FW at this point. If Madison wins this bout tho they have to promise me that they'll never wear those "milk maid" outfits again. Is it a deal Maddy?? It was okay as a lark for one season but...uuhhh...no.

* Carolina will prove too much for those Denver Rollergirls and will win in a performance that will show whay they are always ranked so high. Denvers gonna be sore after this bout and then theyre REALLY gonna feel miserable after they go up against the mighty Gotham City the next day. Poor poor Denver. They had to drive so far to be so beat up. Dont hate me Denver.

* Gotham will beat those OG's from Austin known as the Texas Rollergirls and you heard it here first. Its only a mild upset but for my money Gotham is the very best team in this Tournament. Gotham is scary-good. Gotham can be fairly mean-spirited too. I know how gentle and laid back most Girls from the Bronx and Brooklyn are but I'm just SAYIN" ya know? Watch for the wicked skaters of scary Gotham-they will kill.

* Windy City will beat the host Philly Rollergirls and it will be a better baut than some might think. Pilly really really wants to win this game. But its just not gonna be enuff going up against such a powerful team. WC is one of those "for real" teams.

-Ya wanna know whats great about makin picks in a tournament like this? Well I'll tell ya...NO "JV" teams are gonna sneak up on me and screw up my picks!! This is an "All Star" lineup top to bottom. So these picks are gauranteed!! I'm tellin ya, cash in yer stocks n bonds and bankroll these picks. Theyre gonna be gold. And if not then perhaps I can attempt to weasel and wriggle and tell ya how there was just NO WAY that I could have known that Snot Rocket would be debuting for Dominion and how was I to know that they flew out and didnt drive?? How did I know that Rocky Mtn had to ride their bicycles all the way to Philly because their funds fell through? Huh??

Alrighty then...

Day 2-Rink #2
* Burning River, a sentimental favorite, will defeat Ohio RG and I'm not sure why. Really, theres a good chance that Ohio will win this game but I've just got a feeling about BRRG. I guess thats where the sentimental favorite part comes in. I HOPE that BRRG wins this bout, okay? Good news is: No one dares to ask MILFinator to be in any Mens magazines and so no one gets their eye "dotted". Damn it.

* Boston will beat Houston in a solid bout. Houston just hasnt impressed me much lately and Boston will be in a pissy mood from getting beat by Rocky Mtn. Boston has a very good team and so this wont be an upset in anyones eyes. Personally I'm gettin a little sick of Boston winning in every sport. Patriots, Celtics, Red Sox...BRG!

* Providence will upset Charm City in an excellent bout. Theres no real good reason to pick Prov in this bout but I BELIEVE in this team...theyre ready to make a move up to the next level I tell ya! They will find a way to
scratch and fight and do what they need to do to win this game. And if they dont?? Well at least they will have been beaten by Charm City. I really like that name...Chaaaaarm City. Cool.

* Grand Raggidy will pound Ohio in what will be, I guess, Ohio's second bout this day. They dont have enuff to come close to GRRG in this bout. They just dont.

* Detroit convincingly defeat Atlanta in another bout that probably wont be very competitve. Atlanta's got a nice team, dont get me wrong, but theyre not one of those "for real" teams. Unfortunately for The ATL Deeeeetroit IS one of those elite teams. Sorry ATL. And one more thing ATL-couldja find it in yer heart to just lay down a little in that upcoming bout against Dixie? I really liked those Rollergirls from Dixie.

Day 2-Rink #3
* Ft Wayne nails Connecticut in this competitive bout. If I dont at least pick FW in one game in this Tournament Kitty Kiljoy will pop me in the eye next time she see's me. I dont wanna get popped in the eye. Hey, I'm gonna SEE her in September okay?? Really tho, FW wins this game and plays their heart out in a close one.

* Cincy is rightfully irritated when they go down to Texas and come away from this Tournament empty handed. Sorry Sadie. Its not my fault that yer squad had to go up against Grand Raggidy AND Texas in successive days. Cincy has a team that has done some impressive things in recent memory but not this weekend they wont.

* Gothic Gotham crushes Denver. Just that simple. Denver will be bummed.

* Windy City has been excellent this year and they will continue to roll when they upset Caroline in what will certainly be one of the most intense, charged bouts of the Tournament. I'd LOVE to be at this bout. Since the Ohio vs Grand Raggidy bout should be going on in Rink 2 at the same time as this bout then I really really really would LOVE to be at this bout.

* Philly ends the day with the victory they seek and those Mad Rolling Dolls will go down. It should still be a very entertaining bout nonetheless and a fine one to end the East Coast Extravaganza.

-Check back Monday to see how my picks went. But if I were you I'd get that Derby bookie on yer celly reeeeal quick like and get rich.

I won't make a prediction...

But I suspect you've never seen Dominion play. Their current #22 ranking really doesn't do them justice. Fast jammers, and a very strong defense.

Well, in order to save some

Well, in order to save some time tomorrow I'm gonna get a head start on the results from Philly. Let me just jump to the fact that I'm 8-2 as of now. Not bad. No one lost too much money on my picks yesterday.

* Burning River saved MILFinator for Sunday and fell to Connecticut 103-94. I predicted that this would be a close bout and so it was. Burning Rivers Jammer Stroker Ace ended up in the penalty box at the wrong time and that was enuff to lose it for BRRG. BR had their chances in this one. I'm 1-0.

* Charm City showed Houston just how charming they can be and lit up HOU by a score of 214-62. Yikes! Charm City's defense was just too much for Houston. That puts me at 2-0.

* The mighty force of nature that is the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls defeat Boston 111-93 in a tight bout. The PPDD girls know how Boston feels. I would really hate to play Rocky Mtn right now-they are an exceptional squad with the potential to be even better. Its about time a team from Bean City lost! I'm 3-0.

* My 'lil team that could DID! Providence doesnt let me down and they beat The ATL by a score of 94-91. Love the Prov!! One more bout to win Girls! I cant believe that my '"'lil team that could" was down by 30 points at the half! Love the Prov!! This lovely bout puts me at 4-0.

* Ummm Dom? Are ya there? I know yer hurtin' but dont take it personally. Deeeeetroit does that to everyone. Really. Theyre just mean like that by nature.Deeeeetroit-165, Dominion-53. Makes me 5-0.

* Cincy proves me wrong and really I should say that Sadistic Sadie proves me wrong since it was really her determination that pulls this one out for Cincy. Grand Raggidy just doesnt have enuff of an answer for Sadie and as a result they lose 110-73. Dammit...I'm 5-1.

* Maddy blows away the deeply dissapointing Ft Wayne skaters 250-38! Holy sh*t. Yes thats right, FW loses by 212 points. How in the hell is that possible F Dubb??! There is no damn way that FW is that bad. I cant explain it. Those"milk maid dress wearin'" Rollin Dolls are strong no doubt, but 212 points?? Kitty's gotta be hackin' up a hairball! Anyway I am now 6-1.

* Carolina, as expected, dismantled those Rollergirls from Denver 129-49. No one, as expected, is surprised. Sunday, as expected, the Goths from Zoo Yawk will kill DEN. And, as expected, I'm 7-1.

* Those aforementioned Wicked Goths CRUSHED Texas by the unreal score of 125-64. What did I say about those Goths?? Yeah...they kick ass. Seriously, kick ass. I would absolutely love to see Gotham taking on KC right now. I really think that Goth could take 'em. Still, I just love Snot Rocket ya know?? I look good at 8-1.

* Philly takes out Chi-town 92-76. Windy City comes out too flat for the host Philly team and thats my second loss of what has been a good day. I finish at 8-2 for the day.Damn right skippy!

In non-ECE action those lovely Bruisers from Brew City beat Tampa Bay 103-79!! Great win BC!! If Seoul is happy-I"M happy!!

Biker_Dave's picture

What a great weekend of

What a great weekend of Derby action in Philly! On to the results of my picks...

* Ooooohhhh! SOOOO close Burning River! Sooooo damn close. Burning River loses a heartbreaker to Ohio and I have to say that I feel for 'em. I was so certain that BRRG would take this bout but, dissapointingly, they lose another bout that they SHOULD have won. BRRG comes away from this game confused and bit depressed. Or maybe that was me. Because now I stand at 8-3.

* Boston shellac Houston by a score of 114-38. Ya know, I KNOW that HOU isnt really at Bostons level yet but this is a team that is definately going in the wrong direction. Houston...come in? Houston?? What the hell is up in HOU right now? Its not the losses its how they're losin'. I am 9-3.

* Prov...how could ya let me down?? I BELIEVED in you Rollergirls! Whyowhyowhy??? Ya wanna know why? Ummmm...Charm City is waaaay better. Better than I gave 'em credit for okay? Still, I have great hopes for Providence, I really do.This was a fairly ridiculous bout for penalties tho with a total of 55 majors!! These teams must really LOVE each other! Chaaaaarm City might be comin' on strong. Chaaaarm city are becomimg quite charming indeed. I slip up and am 9-4.

* Grand Raggidy, to no ones surprise, kill Ohio 115-39. Ohio were likely spent after their nail-biting bout w/BRRG. Or lets hope. Grand Raggidy have so impressed me. I'm really starting to fall for them. They are so beautiful. I am not so beautiful as they, but I am 10-4. Thats kinda pretty.

* Detroit wallop The ATL 168-71.Big, bad, tough-ass Deeeetroit. You better not mess with Deeeetroit. They'll nail ya. HARD. Hey. I wouldnt mess with 'em! I am 11-4 at this point.

* Well wadda ya know?? F Dubb shows up in this bout angry as hell and it really showed. Kitty has ceased coughing up any hairballs. But Ft Wayne still goes down to Connecticut 81-79. At least FW fought hard and showed some heart in this one. I still dont know quite what to think of this team. Hats off to CONN Tho...they looked good. Unfortunately, Tina Colada from CONN broke her collarbone and was hauled off on a stretcher. Hope ya heal up good and strong Tina-we're thinkin' of ya. I take a hit and fall to 11-5.

* I knew TX would come into this bout in a major pissy mood from Saturdays NYC-sponsered butt-kickin' and so they did. They took out their frustrations on Cincy big time Sunday and came away with a 135-48 victory. Texas dominated in this bout and the Sadistic Sadie that we saw Saturday was MIA against the TX defense. Sorry Sadie, but Cincy's loss righted my ship a bit and I am 12-5.

* The Gothic Queens of the 5 Boroughs never left their thrones Sunday. Not even for a minute. Gotham destroys Denver 221-37 in a bout that was never in doubt. All hail the Mighty Goth Rollergirls from The NYC! Taking on all comers! Kill-Destroy-Dominate-Annihilate! Damn-Gotham fires me up! And I'm 13-5! Hellyeah!!

* What is going on in the Windy City?? I am absolutely clueless apparently. I thought WCR was a "for real" team. Who didnt?? What the hell? Carolina, who I consistently under-rate, have won again. Ya know what tho? If Windy City took on Carolina next Saturday I would STILL put my $$$ on Chi-town. This team is so much better than they looked at the ECE. They will come back, you can believe that. Oops! I guess I'm still under-rating Carolina. Hmmmm. I am still a believer at 13-6.

* The awesome East Coast Extravaganza ends on exactly the bang we all knew it would (did that come out right?). Philly comes out fired up and emotional and won a great bout with Madison 106-93. Way to go Philly, ya showed determination and heart. Mad Rollin', ya showed that competitive spirit that we've all come to expect outta ya. We still loves ya Maddy!
* I end up with a record of 14-6. Not bad.Not bad at all. If ya laid out yer greenbacks on my picks ya came out ahead. Not that anyone places actual wagers on Roller Derby. Well, not yet. But I know a guy who knows a guy from Vegas and well from what I heard he says...

And of course we Charm City

And of course we Charm City fans were thinking "Providence? That's the land that Dolly Rocket came from. Be afraid, be very afraid." But I loved both Burning River games. Down to the last full jam*.

*I think that the WFTDA should go to the rule that Charm City used to use in intraleague bouts. Any jam that STARTS before the period is over can run the whole two minutes, 'cause these 18 second jams at the end of a period are just silly.
