DAVIS, CA -- After the first day's round-robin mini-bout action at The Big One tournament, it'll be the top four seeds Bay Area, Angel City, Sacred City and Central Coast advancing to Sunday's full-length semifinals. Sunday's action will kick off at 8:30am with a 60 minute bout between Angel City and Sacred City, followed by Bay Area vs. Central Coast; there will then be a consolation bout for the two losing teams before the championship match.
Highlights of the opening day's action included a thrilling last-jam comeback win by Angel City over Sac City -- Angel City's Estro Jen jammed to a full-length 9-1 win to lift her team to a 39-38 victory -- and a surprise upset from 7th seeded Bakersfield over 5th seeded Sac City, with Bakersfield winning 20-17. 1pm : Bay Area 89, Bakersfield 7
BADG shuts out Bako for the first 6 jams 52-0, before Tonka Toy finally puts Bako on the board in one of BADG's highest scoring jams with Pia Mess 14-3, making the score 66-3.
1:30pm: Angel City 52, Bakersfield 21
Bako grabs the early lead going in to the 3rd jam leading 6-0. But Duchess Van Damn and ACDG put together the largest jam of the bout, a 15-0 that puts ACDG into the lead for good. ACDG pulls away for the rest of the bout, going 20-0 over the last 3 jams.
2pm: Bay Area 57, Sac City 4
BADG this time shuts out Sac City for the first four jams and claims a 24-0 lead. Purdy Girl earned Sac City only points: first when BADG decided to jam Liza Machete, who normally blocks, against Purdy Girl in a jam that Liza won 4-2, and later when Purdy Girl won a jam against BADG's blocker Taxi Scab 2-1. Big jams by BADG were Pia Mess with a 10-0 and BADG rookie Grr Lee Burly getting a 12-0 in her debut competition.
2:30pm: Bakersfield 20, Sac City 17
In a close and hard fought match in which the largest lead was 3 points, 7th seeded Bako squeezed out a win against 5th seeded Sac City for the day's only upset. The bout consisted of 3 lead changes and 4 tie jams.
3pm: Bay Area 53, Angel City 12
BADG got off to a slow start against ACDG. On the second jam, ACDG took the lead 8-6 in a jam that Sassy Slayher started the jam for BADG in the box, and Sugar & Spike won the jam 4-1. BADG responded by shutting out Angel City for the next 7 jams, making the score 46-8. The last jam, Estro Jen versus Grr Lee Burly, ended with a 7-4 win for Burly.
3:30pm: Angel City 39, Sac City 38
Angel City jumped out to a big lead in the first jam with Estro Jen scoring 15-0 against Lil Punk. Estro Jen was back on jam 3 to win against Death Rae 9-4, bringing the score to 24-11 ACDG. Sac City turned the tables, though, shutting out ACDG for the next 5 jams making the score 30-24 Sac City with Lil' Punk getting a 10-0 jam against Sugar & Spike. Estro Jen broke the drought with a 6-7 jam which was won by Sac City's Rosie Rampage making the score 37-30 Sac City. In the tenth jam with about 2:39 left to play Estro Jen jammed again against Death Rae and, in an amazing jam, got a 9-1 win, putting Angel City in the lead by one point with 17 seconds left to play.
Group Two
5pm: Sacred City 38, Port City 10
8th seed Port City won the first jam against 2nd seed Sacred City 2-0. The score then went back and forth before Sacred City took the lead for good in the 4th jam -- Candy Crusher went over Sidney Vicious 4-0 to bring the score to 7-5. Sacred steadily pulled away in the rest of the bout, with the highest jam score going to Mugshot Mary's 12-0 jam against Jamin' Jewlz in the 8th jam.
5:30pm: Central Coast 33, Port City 27
4th seed Central Coast's Pow-Ow took a big lead in the first jam 9-0 over 8th seed Port City's Jamin' Jewlz, and continued to grow their lead to 31-6 until the last three jams when Port City started a furious comeback with with Jamin' Jewlz and 2 Quick scoring 21 points to Central's 2 points. But time ran out for Port City.
6pm: Sacred City 30, Orange County 12
Sacred took the lead from the first jam and steadily grew the lead until the end. But Orange County kept Sacred from running away with it, as the largest jam OCRG allowed was only 5-0.
6:30pm: Central Coast 35, Orange County 19
This bout was nearly a repeat of the previous Sacred City bout, just with Central Coast playing the role of Sacred City. OCRG goes down again, but slowly.
7pm: Sacred City 36, Central Coast 22
Sacred shuts out Central for the first two jams for a 6-0 lead. Sacred then builds a 35-12 lead over the next 8 jams. Wonder Roller of Central Coast would bust out the bout's largest jam with a 10-0 over Cash Money, but then only one point is scored in the last two jams, giving the win to Sacred.
7:30pm: Orange County 22, Port City 19
Another close bout with the largest lead being 7 points. The bout started with a tie 2-2, and then Port City took the lead 4-2. OCRG then took the lead 7-6, and the next 5 jams OCRG held the lead with a series of low scoring and 0-0 jams. The score was 14-11 OCRG, when Port City began another comeback -- in the next 3 jams 2 Quick scored two 4-0 jams to tie the score 19-19. Going into the last jam of the game Trixie Taboo of OCRG picked up a 3-0 jam over Jamin' Jewlz to secure to win for OCRG.
