WFTDA Bout Recap: (22) Dominion 150, (u) Steel City 80

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- On Sunday night, the #22 ranked Dominion Derby Girls of Virginia Beach extended their winning streak to three in a row by defeating the unranked Steel City Derby Demons from Pittsburgh, 150-80.

The first period started off a little hesitantly, with Steel City’s Snot Rocket Science teaching T.Rex Ya Face a lesson with a 3-point jam, and holding the leggy dinosaur to 1 point. Steel City’s blockers Athena and Betty Bonecrusher kept Dominion at bay. Tsunami Tsue got things moving for Dominion on the second jam, though, racking up 5 points while blockers Spontaneous Combustya and Dominion captain Grand Master Crash held Steel City’s jammer in the pack. By the end of the 6th jam, Dominion had tallied up 23 points to Steel City’s 7. The Derby Demons suffered a heavy blow when they lost The Crippler; she'd go out with a shoulder injury in the 8th jam.

By the 10th jam, the Dominion jammers had fully stretched out their legs with Sweet N Lowdown scoring an 8-point jam over Snot Rocket Science’s 1 point. Of note was Turbovision, playing in her first home bout and racking up 9 points in the 12th jam. The Dominion blockers were also making their presence felt, with Spontaneous Combustya and The Ruffian keeping Steel City’s jammers stuck in the pack and following Asian Chow Down’s effective leadership as pivot.

Dominion came out swinging in the second period as Jammer T.Rex Ya Face whipped out a 14-point jam, effectively setting the scoring pace for the rest of the bout. Both sides were plagued by penalties, some keeping jammers in the box for parts of the jam, allowing the other side to take advantage of power play situations. Steel City’s Damage Dahl and La Diabla were forces to be reckoned with while the Dominion blockers, often down to only two in the pack, held on to keep the Steel City jammer from breaking the pack.

Veterans Pretty Skate Machine, Frankendoll and Bam Bam McCha-Cha did their duties with ease, while the help of Duchess America and bRat Out of Hell held Steel City to only 38-points in the entire second period. When the final whistle blew, Dominion was far ahead, the final score reading 150 – 80.

Stats

T.Rex Ya Face had the highest lead jammer percentage of the game, earning LJ in every jam she was in, while Sweet N. Lowdown had an average of 4.56 points per jam. Jammer Sweet N. Lowdown often made it look easy, sometimes knifing through the pack untouched in racking up 23 points for Dominion in the first period alone. But Steel City had an effective jamming weapon of their own -- jammer Snot Rocket Science led all scorers with an impressive 54 points for the Derby Demons.

The Dominion Derby Girls square off against non-WFTDA River City Rollergirls on March 9th in Richmond. The Steel City Derby Demons open up their home season with an intraleague bout on March 22nd.
