Here's an item of interest for anyone with a derby alias: Arizona Roller Derby's Paige Burner, the driving force and registrar extraordinaire behind the International Rollegirls' Master Roster, posted a notice to roller_girls yesterday warning of the list's upcoming major purge of inactive names.

While names have been dropped from the list on a piecemeal basis over time since its inception, this is the first substantial cleanup. Coming off the 11,059 name list will be 516 names released by the registering leagues as "no longer active."

Here's the text of the notice:

The following names will be deleted from the roster this week.

1. If your name is on here and it should not be, you need to let me know ASAP (masterroster@gmail.com)

2. Remember, if you are a league hopper, it is not my responsibility to keep track of your ass. If you don't want to get deleted LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU MOVE!!!!

3. If there is a name on here that you want make sure your league wrangler grabs it before someone else does.

Paige has maintained the name registry almost singlehandedly since taking it over from its originator, Texas Rollergirls' Hydra. We checked in with Paige via email to catch up on the state of the registry. Derby News Network: How goes the name purge project? I can imagine the potential for wailing and gnashing of teeth.
 
Paige Burner: So far not too bad, but we will see over the next few days. (Editor's note - within a few more hours, Paige had received 107 emails about not deleting names).
 
DNN: Can you give me a little more detail about the work you and your team do?
 
PB: The roster is something that truly needs to be tended to daily, however I find that sometimes between my home league and my actual job, I cannot always tend to it, so it will pile up a little bit….kinda like my laundry does.
 
Basically, leagues are supposed to assign one person to wrangle names and send them to masterroster@gmail.com. This does not always happen, there are a lot of individuals that send names in as well. So the volume of emails can become quite large.
 
There really is not a "team" so to speak, but towards the end of last year, I was given the gift that is Jelly Ho Nut, she stepped up to relieve some daily stress and agreed to maintain the roster while I took a much needed break.
 
DNN: How much time do you tend to spend on registry stuff? I'm remembering it was on the order of 20 hours/week… is that still the case, or has it been distributed further?
 
PB: This tends to vary. For example, last night 3 emails took me an hour and a half to work on. There is usually about 120 emails a week and there can be anywhere from one update to sixty updates per email. I have spent up to nine hours in one day working on the roster. On average though I would say that 25 hours a week is spent dedicated to the master roster. Talk about putting a damper on my personal life haha.
 
DNN: Who assists you in managing the list, and roughly how much of their lives does it claim?
 
PB: Jelly had taken it over for several months while I recovered from some name list burnout and angry email fatigue. While Jelly prepared for her nuptuals I agreed that I would step back in so right now, it is just me doing all the grunt work.
 
After I have an update ready I send it to Soylent Mean and she updates the twoevils.org website. I am supposed to send it to her every Sunday, but the last few weeks have been sporadic because of being out of town. I would imagine it takes her several hours or so each time she has to update the website.
 
DNN: Are you interested in recruiting some minions to help carry the workload?
 
PB: Originally I would say, yes, I would love some minions, but what I find happens when there is more than one cook in this kitchen is the process of sticking to guidelines is a little different and names that would not normally get approved get put through and then I have to deal with the fallout later (sometimes much later).
 
It is actually less stress if just one person is taking care of it. If I have to fall on a sword for letting something slip through, at least it is my own. However I do take solice in knowing that any time I could call upon Jelly or Soylent to step in and get the job done, they are both amazing ladies that always follow through.
